Starting today, these facilities will implement a 12-hour operational pattern.
“Normally, each facility operates on its own in terms of where staff is assigned,” explained Dir. Frakes. “In order to keep activities as normal as possible, there will be situations where staff members will be asked to work in the opposite facility. In essence, the facilities will coordinate together.”
Dir. Frakes said the decision to move to extended shifts is spurred largely by a slowdown in hiring.
“We are feeling the effects that many other industries and businesses are experiencing currently, nationally and across Nebraska. This is a very tight job market, especially in Lincoln and it is having an impact on our two largest facilities – the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) and LCC/DEC.”

With a shortage of tank-truck drivers, coupled with the recent travel surge, the gas industry is experiencing supply-chain bottlenecks and shortages.
Several areas, including the Pacific Northwest and Northern California, are already reporting shortages.
The trade group National Tank Truck Carriers report somewhere between 20-25% of tank trucks are sitting idle across the country.
Industry insiders say there were driver shortages before the pandemic, but lockdowns forced even more drivers to retire or change jobs.
This has also inflated prices at the pump, which are the highest they’ve been since 2014. The current national average is $3.10 per gallon.
