Blue Jays birthdays: Rick Cerone

Blue Jays birthdays: Rick Cerone Share this story Rick Cerone turns 67 today. Cerone was an original John Lowenstein, four months and one day before their first game, sending Rico Carty to Cleveland for him. We had taken Carty from Cleveland in the expansion draft and would get him back in March of 1978. Cerone played in our first ever game, going 2 for 4 with a double in our win over the White Sox (in the snow). He played four games in that first week before being sent down to AAA. He came back for a game in May and then was up for good in mid-August. He hit .200/.245/.270 in 31 games.

Casali catches 5th straight shutout, Giants beat Marlins 3-0

Casali catches 5th straight shutout, Giants beat Marlins 3-0 April 24, 2021 It means so much to Curt Casali that he can provide Buster Posey a much-needed break behind the plate and Giants pitchers don’t miss a beat with the backup. Casali caught his fifth consecutive shutout, guiding Aaron Sanchez and four relievers in San Francisco’s 3-0 win over the Miami Marlins on Thursday night. “Five in a row, it´s pretty sweet,” a grinning Casali said. Casali – in for a resting Posey – is the fifth catcher since at least 1900 to backstop a shutout in five straight starts. He joins Francisco Cervelli (2015), Chris Hoiles (1995), Alan Ashby (1986) and Ed Phelps (six straight in 1903), per Elias Sports. Casali is the first to do it with five different starting pitchers. The 32-year-old said the amount of pride he takes in that feat “is probably more than I can describe.”
