Local nonprofits receive contributions from Youth Philanthropy in Action middle school students
The Community Foundation for Ocala/Marion County and NonProfit Business Council awarded $2,500 as part of the Youth Philanthropy in Action program, according to a press release from the foundation.
In spring 2021, Belleview Middle School and Osceola Middle School participated in YPIA. Osceola did so in spring 2020, as well, but COVID-19 abruptly altered the program delivery.
The
U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division last week announced an education and enforcement initiative designed to help the agricultural industry in the Southeast to increase compliance with federal labor laws. In addition to enforcement activity, the initiative provides compliance assistance to employers and educates workers and other stakeholders, the agency said in a news release. AIM marks a research milestone
Ocala-based AIM ImmunoTech Inc. announced last week that it has dosed the first healthy subjects in its Phase 1 clinical study on the safety of its drug Ampligen.

Charlie Horse raises more than $12k in toys and cash for Marion County Toys for Tots
The Charlie Horse restaurant held a fundraiser for Marion County Toys for Tots Dec. 6 and raised more than $12,814 in cash and toy donations, according to a press release from Jem Chapman, general manager of the Charlie Horse Ocala restaurant.

VFW honors local students and teachers
Veterans of Foreign Wars McCullough-Mixson Post 4209 in Ocala recently hosted a gathering to recognize the local winners of two VFW-sponsored patriotic essay competitions.
The contests have local, state and national eliminations, and top national level prizes in the contests include a $30,000 scholarship.
Three area teachers were also recognized at the gathering.
The Patriot s Pen contest is open to students in grades 6 to 8. They are required to write an essay from 300 to 400 words on a patriotic theme, which this year was What is patriotism to me?
