I have a confession. All of us have our snobberies. If you love cars, you’ll judge someone who drives one kind of car over another, if you play golf you’ll have opinions about balls, if yoga’s your thing, it’s entirely possible that you are a mat fetishist. For me, a kitchen obsessive, it was the microwave. For my first 25 years as a homeowner I didn’t have one. If we rented a cottage, the first thing I did after unpacking the wine was to move the offending appliance from the counter into a cupboard as it took up too much space and I wouldn’t use it anyway.
