New Opportunity to View Bears at McNeil River
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) and the Outdoor Heritage Foundation of Alaska (OHFA), the department’s official non-profit partner organization, announce a special raffle for anyone wishing to visit the McNeil River State Game Sanctuary this summer.
The McNeil River sanctuary is located approximately 100 miles west of Homer on the Alaska Peninsula. Upwards of 144 individual brown bears have been documented feeding on the sanctuary’s tide flats and salmon streams during summer with as many as 74 bears observed at one time. The Alaska State Legislature set this area aside in 1968 to protect these valuable resources. The ADF&G working with the Alaska Board of Game manages public access to the sanctuary to assure these wildlife resources are protected in perpetuity and to assure a quality experience for those that are able to visit. ....

SitNews: Alaska Legislature Rejects Pebble Leadership from serving on State Board of Fish

Alaska Legislature Rejects Pebble Leadership from serving on State Board of Fish

Tuesday PM
(SitNews) - In an overwhelming majority, the Alaska Legislature today voted against allowing a member of Pebble’s leadership team to serve on the state fisheries management board, reflecting Alaskans’ widespread and bipartisan support for protecting salmon habitat in Bristol Bay.
Members of the Alaska State House and Senate voted 41-18 to reject Pebble Limited Partnership Director of Regional Affairs Abe Williams’ appointment to Alaska s Board of Fisheries, sending a clear message that Alaskans are not willing to trade Bristol Bay’s sustainable, world-class fishery for the permanent destruction of our rivers and streams that would result from the proposed Pebble mine. ....

It’s time for the Alaska Legislature to recognize that the makeup of, and the broad authority granted to, the Alaska Board of Game, allows the board to make decisions that are contrary to our state constitution in terms of allocations and favorability to nonresident hunters.
A prime example revolves around a case making its way through the courts Cassell v. State of Alaska, Board of Game
regarding the board’s regulations governing the Kodiak brown bear draw hunt system.
For many Alaskans, and certainly many nonresidents as well, a Kodiak brown bear hunt is the one coveted hunt they would like to go on in their lifetime. But the board has made it extremely difficult for a resident to draw a permit, while at the same time making it exceedingly easy for a nonresident guided hunter to participate in the hunt. ....
