Pistoleros Frontman Lawerence Zubia Dies At 56

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) A local rock legend, Lawrence Zubia, died Saturday morning.Â
Zubia, who was the lead singer of the Pistoleros, died after months of battling chronic pancreatitis. Zubia and the Pistoleros are members of the Arizona Music Hall of Fame after decades of playing rock n roll across the Valley. The band was inducted in July of 2019.
After the group had formed, originally called The Chimeras, the band signed with Hollywood Records in 1996 and had to change their name because another band had previously claimed it. So after three years into their band life, they became known as the Pistoleros.Â

Lawrence Zubia, the charismatic frontman whose voice and presence helped make Pistoleros major players on the Mill Avenue scene that made Tempe a musical hotbed in the 90s, died the morning of Saturday, Dec. 19.
Zubia, 56, was taken to the hospital Friday afternoon with pneumonia.
As Mark Zubia, the brother with whom he d written songs since they were teens, explained, He d been recovering from surgery on his pancreas. He got the surgery in I believe April. And it just took too much out of him. Since April, he s been convalescing. Then, he got pneumonia. He should have been around at least another 20 years.
