Plan International, a non-governmental organisation working on girls’ rights has expressed the view that the Nigerian government has not learnt from previous incidents of kidnap of students in boarding schools in the country.
According to the Country Director of Plan International Nigeria, Dr. Hussaini Abdu, “the abduction of students of Government Boys Science Secondary School in the Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State by unknown individuals is an indication that the nation and government has not learnt from the unfortunate incidents of abduction of 276 girls from the Chibok Secondary School in Borno State in 2014 and another set of 110 girls at the Government Girls Science and Technical College. Dapchi, Yobe State in 2018.”

Making references to the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls from Chibok in 2014, and a similar incident in Dapchi Secondary School in 2018, the organisation said government should have put in place adequate security to prevent the attack that occurred in Katsina over the weekend.
Gunmen had, on Friday, attacked Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina, with over 300 students still missing as of Sunday afternoon.
Hussaini Abdu, Plan International’s country director in Nigeria, said the government should have learnt from previous incidents and put in place security measures to ensure safety in schools.

The organisation described the action of the bandits against innocent school children as unacceptable, tasking security agencies to immediately swing into action to not only rescue the missing students but also apprehend the perpetrators and make them face the consequences of their action.
They warned that immediate action and not rhetoric should be taken to prevent another Chibok or Dapchi schools’ unresolved abductions scenarios.
The organisation said the development was a sad reminder of the terrorists’ attacks on Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State on the night of 14 April 2014, where 276 girls writing West African Examination Council (WAEC), were abducted and another attack on 19 February 2018 at Government Girls’ Science and Technical College (GGSTC) Dapchi, Yobe State that left some students dead and others missing.
