ZooTampa helps efforts to restore Puerto Rican crested toad population Catherine Hawley reports TAMPA, Fla. - Thousands of tadpoles got a one-way ticket from Tampa to the Caribbean last week. It is an effort by ZooTampa at Lowery Park to help save a species nearly 1,200 miles away. Inside an isolated building at ZooTampa a team is helping Puerto Rico’s only native toad bounce back from the edge of extinction. "These guys are a threatened or endangered species in Puerto Rico due to habitat loss, climate change, and invasive species," explained ZooTampa associate curator of reptiles and aquatics, Dan Costell.
