thousands took to the streets in the middle east to protest the u.s.'s decision to recognize jerusalem at the capital of israel, but today the police are preparing for a so-called day of rage. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning in california, tens of thousands of homes remain in jeopardy from a string of wind-driven destructive wildfires. two new fires have ignited. one burning through a retirement community near san diego. fire crews are now battling six major fires, making progress with some and not with others. the largest fire around ventura destroyed at least 130i buildins and covers thods kenneth craig has the story. >> this single-family home reduced no nothing but rubble, all that's left, the shell of their minivan. hundreds of thoroughbred horses ran for their lives as the southern california wildfire spread even further south. this new blaze dubbed the lilac fire is in northern san diego county. volunteers trying to save them said several of the horses were killed. several were badly injured. >> i caught a couple that were actually burned. >> reporter: the lilac fire 35 north of san diego grew six square miles in just a few hours. further north, the biggest of the blazes around ventura has grown to nearly 200 miles. that fire has accounted for the bulk of at least 500 buildings destroyed so far. officials say even though the, hurricane-force winds predicted for thursday didn't quite materialize they're still fanning the embers. >> that santa ana weakening is going to cause the fire to be much less predictable. it's going to move in different directions. >> reporter: here where the fire passed through, people are being allowed back home. sadly, there's not much to see. >> all of my little brother's stuff, that's where they've been growing up. >> reporter: every day the fire continues, air quality becomes more of an issue. so much so, more schools have been closed today. this is one of the hardest hit neighbors in develop tur rah county. i think it's safe to say half is no longer standing. one described it as a war zone. >> thank you, kenneth. this morn t snowstorm of the season is making its way from the southeast up to new england. winter storm warnings and advisories are posted from southern texas to south carolina. up to three inches of snow expected this morning in corpus christi. schools in austin are canceled today. paul deanno of kpix has more on this significant outbreak. >> there's a significant kink in the jet stream in the u.s. in alaska, an overnight low of 56 degree. that will by far overshadow a record. on the other side we have snow steadily falling in houston, texas, this morning, a jd that snow is going to be on the move as soon as 9:00 friday morning. atlanta and new orleans dealing with light to moderate snowfall. by this afternoon, washington, d.c., norfolk, virginia. charlotte, north carolina, dealing with snowfall, and by tomorrow morning it works its way up the eastern seaboard. philadelphia, and d.c. this snowstorm started as snow in texas. i'm paul tee a noe for cbs news. the snow in texas is a rarity, but not so in buffalo, new york. some areas of western new york got over a foot and a half. today israeli forces are bracing for more violence in the wake of president trump's decision to recognize jerusalem as israel's capital. on the gaza strip they burned a picture of the president. vice president mike pence would not be welcome in the west bank during his visit to the region next month. minnesota governor mark dayton says he hasn't decided on a replacement for al franken. after serving more than eight years, franken has announced he's stepping d allegations of sexual misconduct. he took a parting shot at president trump. >> some of the allegations against me simply are not true. others i remember very differently. >> if anything franken suggested he is the victim of a double standard. i am leaving while a man who has bragged on tape about his history of sexual assaults sits in the oval office. >> reporter: like president trump franken is accused of groping multiple women before he came to washington. >> i would have liked to have seen him take some responsibility, but the end result is the same. >> reporter: senator amy klobuchar is franken's colleague. i would have more. you were calling for members asking you to step down. it was going to be really difficult for him to do his job. >> reporter: the pair of resignation this week puts even more pressure on the gop and its alabama senate candidate roy moore. many senate republicans disavowed moore again. >> i wish it were another nominee. >> nancy cordes, cbs news, capitol hill. and republican congressman trent franks says he's resigning next month. he said he never physically or intentionally contacted them. frank and his wife have children through sur olgacy. he said he would be u get a fair hearing. congress passed a stopgap bill. they passed the measure yesterday that keeps the government financially afloat until december 22nd. also yesterday president trump held budget talks with top congressional leaders. democrats say there won't be a deal unless there are protections for d.r.e.a.m.ers. and ahead on "cbs this morning," we will discuss the budget negotiations with republican south dakota senator john thune. it's still unclear why a gunman opened fire at a new mexico high school, killing two students. the shooter is also dead, but it's not known if he took his own life or was kill bed the police. barry petersen reports. >> reporter: it's a scene that's become all too familiar, students barricading the opens fire. as tech high school was the school in the cross hairs. and they knew what to do. this is a student at the high school. >> i could feel it vibrating and then it stopped and we -- we -- when we evacuated out of our room, there was a dead body outside our room, and we were told that it was probably the shooter that shot himself outside our door. >> reporter: some parents reported hearing from their children via text messages that they could hear the shooter approaching. >> you feel like anymore you're not safe anywhere. >> reporter: the high school was cordoned off as police cleared the campus and teens were reunited with their parents. chief mike shield runs the police department. chief kneel wneil was one of th heroes. he and his men busted through the glass to get in and resolve the situation. barry peterson, cbs news, as tech, new mexico. michael pfleger, the former south carolina police officer who fatally shot walter scott an unarmed black man get 20s years behind bars. in exchange prosecutors dropped state murder headlines on the morning newsstand. mississippi's clarion-ledger reports john lewis is skipping tomorrow's opening of the civil rights museum because president trump will be there. he said it's intolerable that the president will attend. he said he should cancel his visit because of his stand on civil rights issues. "the tampa bay times" reports that parents are refusing to answer investigator's question. he's accused of killing four people in apparently random attacks. his parents' attorney said they're not going to answer questions that could lead to their son's execution. they're going to be brought back in next month to see if they should be held in contempt of court. they're casting uncertainty about the u.s. competing in the south korea winter olympics. yesterday white house press secretary sarah huckabee sanders said no official decision has been made. later she tweeted the u.s. looks forward to participating. later u.n. ambassador nikki haley said it was an open question whether they would compete. and ed sheeran high honor from prince charles of the buckingham palace. prince charles them. they've already had one of the worst flooding events ever and now they're getting some snow which is very rare for that area. we're seeing it in parts of louisiana and parts of georgia, texas, all getting in on this action and we my friends will not be left out. this is futurecast tomorrow morning at 6:30 a.m.. we're going to see some light to moderate snow falling across the area at that time. and in terms of accumulations we're looking at most of it sticking to the grass, sticking to your roof to your flower beds. those types of pl out there. and then later on in the evening, you still get that round of snow and we're looking at a round of rain and snow by saturday at 8:30 p.m.. saturday is going to be snow day around here. little accumulation because the. s will get above -- temperatures will get above freezing and ground will also stay above freezing out there for most of the day. all right miri thank you so much. your time right now 4:27. we're keeping a close eye on how things have shaping up this -- are shaping up on the roads this morning. and it looks leek we have an issue on prince george's county. that's going to affect commuters this morning particularly on the bw parkway. let me step out and kind of show what you we're talking about. it's the red there on 295 on the southbound side. we're told that all lanes are closed and this is going to be close to powder mill road. at that intersection there. so it's going to have a huge impact for our commuters out in prince george's county. we're not exactly sure when this is going to clear up but our understanding is that we expect to see this closure throughout much of thern more information and then send that over to you. jan? all right larry thank you. right now federal workers and contractors across our area can breathe a sigh of relief with no government shutdown at least for tonight. two weeks to work out a deal and here's what to watch. democrats will push to include a deal for daca immigrants and republicans want extra money for the military. we're going to see how this goes between now and december 22nd. also protestors stood on the steps of the supreme court last night to demonstrate against president trump's travel ban. organizers from the civil rights groups are upset over a ruling -- to let the ban stand while it's contested in the courts. the news at 4:30 starts tonight and then snowing most of the day tomorrow. but with temperatures the above freezing -- temperatures above freezing we're looking at most of that sticking to the grass so i know there have been some road treatment out there which is not a bad idea when you have this coming your way. we've seen that snow from texas all the way up through georgia and even the carolinas are getting in on the sac. early -- action. early tomorrow. morning runs to do run into some pockets of moderate snow falling out there. and then throughout the day we'll continue to see those bands just falling across the area. but temperatures again will be above freezing. so that helps to keep it from sticking to the perhaps the top of your car. and the grass. you will see it looking like a winter wonderland out there. by 8:30 in the evening, we're still dealing with snow but a little bit of snow and rain it looks like at least according to this model begins to mix in. and then later on saturday night, we begin to see the cloudy skies and sunday still a few clouds lingering around and some flakes and flurries moving their way in as well. so this morning, 39 degrees. still have a little bit of time for
