still to go for the rest of july and that first weekend of august not looking too pretty either. a prince george's county man has got an incredible story to tell. he was reported missing a week ago and reportedly spent most of that time trapped under a tree. tonight he is alive. how police believe it happened and how that man is doing tonight. >> this is the tree where 66-year-old vietnam veteran larry shaddy spent the last week of his life. i want you to see how close it is to the main roadway of ardwick ardmore road in prince george's county. shaddy was going out for a walk late on the night of july 20th he told his roommate but he never showed back up in their room. police were called to start a search. somehow he was not seen on this tree. investigators said today shaddy was probably walking on the grassy area just on the other side of that guard rail when he slipped and fell down this steep embankment and managed to get himself so thoroughly wedged underneath this tree trunk that he could not get himself out under his own power. and in fact he couldn't even get himself out with the help of firefighters. he had to be cut out today using the jaws of life. the good news, no serious injuries only exposure related injuries from spending a week out here in the woods. he'll go to a hospital for a little while but larry shaddy will be just fine. >> mr. shaddy is in the icu tonight. he's recovering from what they call extreme dehydration. the body of a second swimmer who went missing friday night off cove point beach has been recovered. he was dug los brown, co-owner of a popular dc restaurant known as coasta brava. his brother's body was recovered saturday. police believe the men entered deep water, became tired trying to swim against the tide and finally went under. investigators in frederick county are trying to figure out what led a homeless man to stab two cooks. a husband and wife. the husband was killed. the wife critical ly injured. it all happened last night at the anna prayer counseling and retreat center. a korean church retreat in urbana, maryland. >> it was a very bloody brutal crime scene. the wounds included stab wounds, a number of slashing cut wounds. a lot of blood. again, some of the deputies that went in to the crime scene were pretty disturbed about what they saw. >> the suspect is 30-year-old song su kim. he's charged with murder and attempted murder and he allegedly told investigators he hated all koreans. investigators say he had also complained about the food at the retreat. a special grand jury in fairfax county began hearing testimony today in the shooting of john geer, the man killed a couple years ago by a fair fax county police officer. geer was shot right outside his front door in august 2013. police had been called to the home by his long time girlfriend after the couple had argued. she and his children left the house before the police got there. the four officers who were there that day told investigators they saw geer's hands up near his head but the one who shot geer said he fired because he saw geer jerk his hands toward his face. we spoke with geer's dad don who witnessed the shooting. >> i hope that they find that there's sufficient evidence to put him up for trial. >> in april fairfax county settled a lawsuit over the shooting agreeing to pay geer's daughters just under $3 million. stafford county deputies are searching for a man who fired a gun in to a nearby house. the sheriff's office said it all began as a fight between timothy phelps and a woman who was staying at his house. investigators say some of her friends came over and that's when phelps brought out the shotgun. his friend brian blair grabbed the gun tried to shoot at folks driving away from the fight but ended up hitting a house instead. nobody inside the home was hurt. deputies are still looking for blair. late this afternoon loved ones celebrated two lives taken too soon. separate funeral services were held in louisiana for two men killed in the lafayette theater shooter. 33-year-old jillian johnson and mayci breaux was 21. nine other people were hurt in the shooting. today we're getting a glimpse in to the final days of the man accused of killing johnson and breaux. surveillance video from the motel 6 where houser was staying seems to show nothing out of the ordinary. in one clip he walks toward his lincoln towncar. the very vehicle he used the day of the shooting. the lead investigator found it parked just a few feet outside of the emergency exit with a big hit he planned on getting out alive. >> his keys were on top of the tire. >> really? >> they were staged so he didn't have to reach in his pocket, that he could grab the keys, jump in the car and take off. >> the 59-year-old had a history of mental illness but was still able to legally buy a gun in alabama. houser ended up killing himself inside that movie theater. defense lawyers in colorado are worried the theater shooting in louisiana may influence the jury's sentence for james holmes. today his lawyers asked the judge to poll the jury about whether they'd seen or read anything about the lafayette shooting. 12 jurors raised their hands. the defense worried the jurors might want to punish holmes for inspiring a copycat killing. they are now deciding between life and death for the gunman. the man accused of killing three prominent alexandria residents will have a different judge presiding over his trial. judge jane roush has been on the bench but today she got promote today the virginia supreme court. she'll start there a week from today. roush has been a fair fax circuit court judge since 1993. she proceeded over the trial of dc sniper. in a statement today he bobbi kristina brown an angel and said he's completely numb. she died yesterday nearly six months after she was found face down in a bathtub. medical examiners say the first part of their autopsy found no obvious cause of death or significant injuries. but doctors say the passage of time since brown was hospitalized will complicate how to figure out what she died of specifically. the patriarch of the jackson family is in intensive care tonight. joe jackson, father of the late michael jackson, suffered a stroke while he was celebrating his 87th birthday down in brazil. someone who organized jackson's family said he's doing fine tonight and talking without any problems. washington football players report to training camp in richmond later this week. >> but this afternoon the team's star from mexico after human species and toilet paper were found in the fields where cilantro is grown. it focuses on pueblo. that bad sill -- cilantro has been linked to hundreds of intestinal illnesses over the past few years. federal regulators say chrysler was too slow to tell customers about 23 recalls and didn't fix 11 million vehicles fast enough. as part of the deal fiat chrysler has to pay $105 million to the government and agreed to buy back vehicles that aren't fixed. the automaker also has to offer financial incentives to the owners of about 1 million jeep grand cherokees. tonight we're waiting the results of a big vote from the boy scouts of america. the executive board was all set to vote today on whether to end the ban on gay adult leaders. results of the vote are expected sometime tonight. earlier in the month the executive committee voted unanimously to end the ban and allow individual scout units to set their own policies. boston is out. after the break the reason it it. could be a while before we see another nice evening like that. hot humi montgomery county's executive wants police to find out who vandalized a controversial confederate statue on the old courthouse grounds even those city leaders are meeting today to consider removing it. the vandalism including the phrase black live matter was discovered this morning. the statue was erected 1913. up until now president obama has been staying out of the 2016 campaign. today that all changes as he sounded off over mike huckabee. huckabee is a vocal opponent of the plan. over the weekend he said the deal would quote take the israelis and basically march them to the door of the oven. speaking from africa, the president called that statement ridiculous and sad and suggested that huckabee is more concerned about his run for the white house. >> when you get rhetoric like this maybe it gets attention and maybe this has never pushed mr. trump out of the headlines. >> huckabee is not backing down. donald trump has surged to the top of the polls in iowa and new hampshire despite what he said about senator john mccain and about mexican americans. the u.s. olympic committee searching for a new city to possibly host the 2024 summer games. this afternoon it dropped boston's bid just hours after the mayor said he would not sign a deal that would make taxpayers liable for any overrun. >> i might remember boston beat out dc, san francisco and l.a. the mayor said he wants to put an american city. he didn't mention any one in particular but l.a. was considered to be the runner-up to boston. one of america's busiest airports is about to get a major facelift. andrew cuomo unveiled plans to redesign and rebuild laguardia. he says the first phase will start next year and cost $4 billion. the new airport will be closer to grand central parkway which will more than double the space. laguardia is cramped and outdated and last year vice president joe biden dubbed it a third world country and he helped to expedite some of the approvals needed to move the plan forward. >> metro silver line is celebrating one year of service today bringing trains through tyson's corner. metro officials and community leaders touted the line for boosting business in northern virginia and reducing traffic on the roads. the silver line will eventually go to dulles international airport. but that phase is expected to wrap up in 2019 with a bill of nearly $3 billion. foo fighters front man dave grohl is roging rocking out in front of sold out concerts despite breaking his leg a month ago.
