in the 90s for the next several days. let's get it started with the heat alert. this is heat advisory in effect for the entire metro area. it goes into effect at 1:00. the heat index will be right around 105 for many of us. and actually in the immediate beltway region we could see heat index values above 105 as we head into the afternoon. here is a look at that day planner. already 87 degrees at 10:00. that's before you factor in the humidity. 93 at 1:00. 94 degrees at 4. 88 even at 10:00. right now it is 75 in leesburg and hagerstown. 73 gaithersburg. it's still 79 in downtown washington. we actually have a heat index value in d.c. right now of 84 when you factor in the dewpoint of 74 degrees. we are going to keep it mostly dry as well. we don't have any rain in the forecast. maybe a stray isolated storm from this weak disturbance that's trying to pass through. a cold front will arrive on tuesday. we will track that for you coming up with 9 futurecast and the first alert runners, a cup of -- couple of them this morning. if you are heading to nats park at 1:35, it is going to be tough. take those precautions. actually, there are expectations that are going to be made today. you can bring a handheld battery operated fan. you can bring two one-liter bottles of water. they are going to provide misting fans and cooling centers. meantime, you want to be able to to -- people are trying to stay cool yesterday. staying hydrated is a must. spray parks, water fountains are a huge hit. we found a huge crowd enjoying georgetown waterfront park yesterday. >> it is so the hot i had to go in the water. me and my sister are having so much fun. >> reporter: so much fun. be careful of the little ones and the elderly. you know, keep an eye out for them because it is tougher for them, especially in this oppressive heat. going back to the nats park, the cooling centers are going to be at the roosevelt and kennedy rooms. they are going to provide some water, they say. they are located in the conference room on the third base side level. the club level there. there are also cooling centers across the region. take advantage of those. museums, libraries and shopping malls, say that he was sitting in a bmw at 13th and rig streets northwest early yesterday when he was shot several times. >> at least it wasn't people from the neighborhood and gangs. but then you think about how scary it is and how random it is and what makes somebody want to shoot somebody over an argument. >> witnesses told investigators that the victim in the shooting was arguing with somebody before he left a nearby bar. neighbors say it's the third recent shooting in their normally quiet logan cyclical community. the family of a chattanooga gunman has apologize today the families of those that were killed in thursday's shootings. relatives of muhammad youssef abdulazeez say that he suffered from depression and they are shocked by what happened. investigators are looking closely at the time he spent in jordan last year. near the shooting scene a fifth cross was put in the ground yesterday after a service man -- excuse me -- sailor randall smith died of his injuries. a confederate flagging rally in columbia, south carolina, ended with arrests. passions still very strong on both sides of the issue. >> it started from beginning to end. it turned from peaceful to chaotic. >> and you hear the siren there as tensions escalated. some protesters ripped up a confederate flag before officers moved in to disperse the crowd. there were verbal confrontations. when a handful of men when cameras showed up, things got worse. hours later when the klu klux klan held a rally surrounded by police barricades there. in our area the ncaap wants a confederate statue removed. also a new statue that recognizes loudon county's african-american history. supporters have rallied at this spot in recent weeks and a few counter protesters showed up to yesterday's demonstration. tomorrow night in rockville a special work session about the monument. the statue sits near the red brick courthouse. the public is welcome to join city leaders. starts the 6 p.m. tomorrow night rockville city today. we will start off with a look at the michael and son weather cam. you can tell it's a rough day with the humidity. we are looking at temperatures rising into the 90s already by noon. our average high is hot this time of year. we usually get up into the upper 80s. we are going to reach well into the 90s. in fact, close to 100 degrees. even at 5:00 it's going to be 95. that's dropping down from the forecast high of 98, which we are going to reach between 3 and 4:00 this afternoon. right now it is 75 degrees in college park. still almost 80 degrees in downtown washington. we have been cooled down last night. 73 in fair six. 69 in germantown. everyone else is in the 70s right now. so satellite and radar keeping it clear today. we will see a pop-up shower or storm in a couple of spots. most of us stay completely dry. it's the typical spots east of the blueridge we stay mostly dry. when you get west and south of the immediate metro area we have a better chance for a thunderstorm because the dynamics are better for that. monday dry but then a couple pop-up showers and storms especially in the typical timeframe. the afternoon and early evening. tuesday here comes the cold front. that is going to push through some more showers and storms and behind that drier air arrives and it will also be a little bit cooler. today is the hottest day. 98 degrees with just a slight chance for a stray storm. a couple more storms possible on monday with a high of 95. 92 on tuesday. it absolutely will be a heat wave. scattered thunderstorms arrive in the mid-afternoon. they will carry us through the evening and then behind this system in the first alert seven-day forecast we return to highs around 90 degrees wednesday, thursday, and friday. but at least it won't be as humid. a good amount of sunshine. it will feel refreshing by the time we get the middle of work week. we will return to the 90s on saturday though with an isolated storm. that summer-like feel is air-conditioning, you want to get indoors to a place that has a/c for one to two hours in the afternoon if possible because the prolonged heat stress is what really gets those heat-related illnesses to flare up. if you can get inside to a library or a movie theater, those suggestions that mike had earlier, that is definitely advisable today. this heat advisory is for everyone east of the blueridge. the heat index when you factor in the temperature and the dewpoint, it will feel like 105 or maybe even hotter than that at times during the afternoon. here is a look at the day planner. later, surae? >> reporter: we talked to a jogger who started at 6:30 this morning. she said it's been the toughest day so far. you want to take advantage of the cooling centers. maybe shopping malls, libraries, anything where there is air-conditioning because it's already feeling very thick out here. if you are heading to the nationals game at 1:35, the worst possible time. there are misting centers that will be available. cooling centers there at the park. you are allowed to bring even bottled water as long as it's sealed. folks are going to be down at the mall, too. they are trying to capital as cool as they possibly can. you will see people playing volleyball and kickball, maybe taking a jog. even when you are used to the heat, today's scorcher is going to be tough and dangerous. >> i am from the south. i am used to being hot. take water. put on sunscreen. luckily, around here there is a lot of places selling water. so keep hydrated. >> reporter: and we love those fountains, through the day. we will update it as soon as we get more cooling center information from other cities and towns. well, they range from 18 to 33. those are the men killed in shootings through the district friday night into yesterday. there were six shootings in that time. apparently, all of them unrelated, according to police. one in logan circle. that neighborhood there 33-year-old charles douglas of district heights was found sitting in a bmw at 13th and rigs where he had been shot several times. witnesses report seeing douglas in an argument at a nearby bar before that. so far d.c.'s 2015 murder rate is 14% higher than last year. a baltimore city police officer is being treated for stab wounds after an early morning confrontation. >> he is in serious condition. he was answering a domestic disturbance call when the suspect went after him. >> reporter: the call came in from a security officer in the lobby of this west middle apartment building housing mostly university of baltimore students. he heard a disturbance between a male and female in a second floor apartment. >> he knocked on the door. the male voice then threatened him. actually, his exact words was, leave or i will cut you. >> reporter: when police arrived the suspect is heading out of the lobby. >> almost immediately the security guard recognized who he was and yelled to the officer that he had a knife. by that time the attack was on. >> reporter: these are pictures taken at the scene. the officer was stabbed in the face, neck, and upper torso. >> our police officer, a 15- year veteran, married with a little girl at home, put had himself in harm's way to ensure james goss didn't hurt anyone else. what resulted was a brutal attack on our officer by a man hell bent to kill him. >> reporter: the suspect is identified as 20-year-old james goss. charged with attempted murder and assault. >> by the grace of god, our police officer survived this brutal attack thanks to his courageous bpd partner, a brave security guard, and a couple fast thinking bpd cops who threw our police officer in the cruiser and drove him directly to shock trauma. >> reporter: according to the charging documents, goss was staying with the woman in the apartment and the fight started over the keys. >> according to the charging documents, the woman was punched in the face and put in a chokehold. when she tried to leave the apartment she sustained injuries to her face and arms and police say during the incident goss bit the apartment security officer in the leg. now to an annual effort to pay tribute to fallen troops and the families who visit their gravesites. tomorrow morning landscaping professionals from around the region will gather forerenewal and reremembrance day. hundreds of volunteers will work to beatify the grounds around the tombstones. this is the 19th year of renewal and remembrance. now to campaign 2016. donald trump finally hit a hot button issue that has fellow republicans turning on including dogs and cats. the best advice stay away from wild animals and domestic species that appear be sick. an exposed person can be saved by a series of vaccines that are administered over a 14-day period. if you see an animal that may be infected, called the department of natural resources. signs include staggering movement, excessive drool or paralysis. stay safe and enjoy the rest of your weekend. now a little good news for the firefighters out in california. >> crews have now contained close to 50% of the cajon pass wildfire. the flames tore through the canyon friday evening sending panicking drivers running from their cars because the flames were heading towardsed interstate 15. a handful of homes and 44 cars have burned. the fire covers 3500 acres. they don't get much rain. when downpours hit in arizona you can end up with flash flooding like this. the floodwaters rose so fast that they swept campers and rvs downstream. police had to shut down a stretch of u.s. will eventually pass through the south. there is a bigger one heading our way on tuesday. on 9 futurecast a few pop-up showers and storms outside of the immediate metro area this afternoon. i can't rule out a stray storm over us in the beltway, but it's very unlikely to happen today. it's more likely to happen tomorrow. the dynamics are better for it tomorrow. as you are waking up on monday among it's going to feel like it's in the low 80s for many of us. and then we will trigger some of those showers and thunderstorms in monday afternoon's forecast. you see temperatures get back to the 90s will. as we head into tuesday, the thunderstorm risk will increase. so over the next two days the real stories is the feels-like forecast. look at these numbers. heading into the mid- afternoonit going to feel like 105. tomorrow morning in the the 80s in the morning and a real feel temperature 100 degrees monday afternoon in some spots. the heat is not going away as we head back to work tomorrow. today's high temperature 98 degrees. when you factor in the humidity, it's going to feel like 105 or worse at times this afternoon. monday a high of 95. and we still have that humidity with us. tuesday with that cold front approaching a scattering of thunderstorms and high of 92. in the seven-day forecast it's going to be a little bit cooler on wednesday, thursday, and friday. but it's to new, often spectacular heights. >> i get a sense from you that maybe it's a bit of a shame that most of us gave up papier-mache in third grade? >> yeah, i think so. my goal for many, many years has been to take this underutilized. underappreciated art form and get it out in the world and show people what you can do with this art form. >> reporter: toughed the word, dan has bit written books and blogs that step by steph give away his secrets. like number one, dip your hands in the paste. not the newspaper. >> it's an amazingly simple thing. people butt the newspaper in the paste. before long, by comedian bill cosby. >> they just keep coming out. under oath, cosby talked about having several extramarital affairs. according to transcript of the 2005 and 2006 depositions, which were obtained by the "new york times," the deposition for a civil suit filed by a temple university employee cosby says he offered to pay for the plaintiff's education and had paid other women after they had sex our heat advisory that i mentioned earlier. it's for everyone east of the blueridge. it goes in effect at 1 p.m. that heat index could approach or surpass 105 for everyone in the orange highlighted counties. that's everyone east of the blueridge. we will have temperatures in the 90s for the entire dmv today. already 93 degrees at 1:00. we are going to hit the 90s by noon through the beltway region. 97 degrees at four. that's dropping down from a high temperature of 98, which we are going to reach between 3 and 4:00. even at 7, it's still in the 90s today. hazy sunshine. just a slight threat for a stray storm. most of us will stay completely dry today. 81 already in frederick and in downtown washington. 77 in orange and fredericksburg. 77 also in hagerstown. we do have that just very slight threat for a thunderstorm. most of us won't see anything today, but the best chance will be in the mountains. pretty typical. and as we head into monday, more active weather will approach. we will see chances for thunderstorms on 9th futurecast. we will take a look at the first alert seven-day forecast which has more heat in it as well. it is the heat we are talking about all day. we he want to make sure you are prepared if you have to spend any time outside. you need to take breaks. you need to have water. surae chen is along the tidal basin. a popular morning exercise spot. anybody even trying it this morning? >> reporter: they are. we have seen a few people take the risk out here. you know, this important wasn't too bad say the six to seven o'clock hour. it feels thick out here. if you need to exercise, get that in. the walk or jog this morning. after 10:00 it's going to be pretty bad. it's thick already and getting worse. want to take advantage of the museum, shopping malls, the library. if you are heading to nationals park, be prepared. there will be misting centers. there will be cooling centers. they have also relaxed some rules. you can bring two one-liter bottled water as long as they are sealed. you can bring hand-held battery-operated fans. also take advantage of the water fountains that are all around the region. we have seen folks jogging and walking here along the tidal basin. there will be people playing volleyball, kickball. to folks who are used to the heat, it's tough for them. experienced elizabeth fowler is training for a half marathon and we bumped into her this morning. the worst day i have experienced so far. and i run probably four, five days a week. and this was the worst. and i came down and felt the water, a little breeze, cool it off. it was really more muggy. >> reporter: so, yeah, we vote for exercising in the pool if you have to get something done. i think that would be a great idea. all those fountains, charles county says the pools will be open and capitol clubhouse will open from 9 a.m. to 9 a.m. arun del county is keeping pools open. the libraries, pool centers, rec centers open so residents can cool off. experts the say you need to spend more time in air-conditioning if you can today. shopping malls, movie theaters and the like. eat smaller meals, too. that helps. don't forget to check on your elderly relatives, neighbors and friends. and the pets need water and shade on a day like this. we will check with the other jurisdictions as the cooling centers open we will add then to the app. a motorcyclist involved in a crash in montgomery county has died. the accident happened just before 8:00 last night. it was in gaithersburg. police say the motorcycle was headed south on frederick road 355 when it struck a black acura mdx. the suv was making a u-turn at the intersection at christopher avenue. the motorcyclist a 35-year-old man was taken to suburban hospital where he later died. three women in the acura were not hurt. no word on whether or not any charge are going to be filed in this wreck. the suspect in mays mansion murders is set for a preliminary hearing tomorrow. he is charged with murdering three members of the savopolous family. prosecutors say all four victims were held hostage and tortured for hours until money was delivered to the northwest d.c. home and then they were killed and e thhouse was set on fire. he is being held without gun. the family of the chattahoochee shooter apologized. relatives of muhammad youssef abdulazeez say that he suffered from depression and they are shocked by what happened. investigators are closely looking at the time that he spent in jordan last year to see if that's where he became radicalized. near the shooting seen a fifth cross was put in the ground yesterday at that growing memorial there. this after another serviceman, sailor randall smith, died of his injuries. police are on high alert in several cities in australia today after competing protesters needed to be separated. one group calls it self-reclaim australia. they are expressing concern over more muslim immigrants entering the country. counter protests are calling reclaim australia supporters racists. after police made a handful of arrest yesterday, more officers are being called in today. there were arrests in columbia, south carolina, where groups with different views on the confederate flag were rallying. >> it turned from peaceful to chaotic. >> and there is is the siren as tensions escalated. protesters ripped up a confederate flag. that's before the officers moved in to disperse the crowds. verbal confrontations between people at the rally. the rally was put on by black educators for justice. then a handful of men with cameras showed up. things got even worse when the klu klux klan had a rally. and in our area loudon county ncaap wants a confederate statue removed from outside the county courthouse. the group also wants a new statue that recognizes african-american history. supporters have rallied at this spot in recent speaks. a few counter protesters showed up yesterday. tomorrow night rockville's mayor and council will hold a special work session about that city's confederate soldier monument. it sits mere the red brick courthouse. the public is welcome to join city leaders and invited experts to discuss the monument's future. it starts at the 6 p.m. tomorrow night rockville city hall. she stole the show at the he is pay awards. jenner's story has mean athletes hoping they, too, will gain of it is education and another part of it is really trying to encourage sports teams just to accept the players for who they are. >> reporter: she calls caitlyn jenner an icon in more ways than one. >> people remember the accomplishments that she had as bruce, but now recognize that she was dealing with the same turmoil that i was dealing with as a trans woman where you couldn't be truthful about your identity. >> reporter: stabler hopes jenner will change sports culture. >> to encourage both other people to come out. to drive mainstream awareness and acceptance. and ultimately save lives because we do know that many people do take their own life because they can't be accepted or they can't come out as to who they are. >> i think that it is only good and only positive for our young people. >> reporter: as executive director of out youth, wilkerson hopes athletes like jenner encourage and inspire them to play sports as themselves. >> they are getting to see a representation of themselves now at some of the highest honors. here? the d.c. area, he has gone on to become an advocate and public speaker about transgender athletes. while at george washington university, he became the first known transgender player at an ncaap division i school. wearing the number 50, he played three seasons at george washington university on women's basketball team through 2010. he put off taking hormones and undergoing treatment until after his playing days. well, it's a reconciliation that has been more than a half a century in the making. coming up this morning, tomorrow's plans to wearing that light colored loose fitting clothing. all those precautions sounds like, yeah, whatever, but it is important. it is legitimate. it helps you in conditions like we are going to have this afternoon. the day planner, the marina looks nice. but even being near the tidal potomac and the tidal basin, that does not provide any relief from the heat today because that water is already almost like bath water by this time in july. 82 degrees at 9:00. 91 at noon. and 95 degrees at 5:00. that's dropping down from a high temperature of 98 degrees, which we'll reach at about 3:00. it's already 81 in downtown washington. a very light breeds out of the south. that's not providing any relief. do you see the dewpoint? 76 degrees. so today is the hottest day of the year so far. the heat index will be above 100 all afternoon in the immediate metro area and even outside of the immediate metro area we are going to see that heat index above 100. hot and humid through tuesday. some relief by wednesday. right now 79 in leesburg. 75 culpepper. 75 in martinsberg as well. it's 79 at bwi. take a look at the dewpoints. mid-to-upper 70s. once the dewpoint reaches above the 70-degree threshold, that's when we consider it oppressive humidity. so we are way beyond that looking at these dewpoints in the mid-to-upper 70s. soupy officer and nothing on the way. it's going to be a hazy, hot, and humid afternoon with a high of 94 in gaithersburg, 98 in downtown washington, and in fredericksburg 95, culpepper and orange. even in the higher elevations, no relief today. forecast lows down into the mid 70s for the lowest low temperatures we will see tonight. 74 in manassas and gaithersburg. 80 for the low temperature in downtown washington. this time of year usually we are in the upper 80s. we will continue with a threat for storms on monday and the heat as well. a high of 95 degrees. tuesday that's when our cold front approaches with the scattered thunderstorms and we will reach a high of 92 before the storms roll in. a little bit cooler wednesday, thursday, and friday with a high of 90 degrees. all three of those days there. with the lowering of humidity it's going to fee
