injuring one marine before speeding away. >> he was unloading a large gun on the naval recruiting office. police say mohammad youssef abdulazeez's next stop was a u.s. naval reserve center where he shot and killed four marines and wounded two more people before he was killed. hours later abdulazeez's house was swarmed by authorities. neighbors say he'd lived there with his parents and sisters for about 15 years. today two women were taken away in handcuffs and two computers seized from the house. the fbi said they'll search those computers for a motive. >> you don't want to be angry. >> reporter: the capitol and federal buildings security were beefed up in the afternoon. folks were trying to figure out how to accept it or at least understand it. >> it just makes me sick to my stomach. how can we prevent this? and we're such a great country. >> reporter: at the iwo jima memorial visitors seemed overwhelmed how to prevent such a shooting. >> they're the people that save us, they protect us. railroad or possible islamic extremism. >> i'm -- >> reporter: or possible islamic extremism. >> i'm not running out killing a bunch of muslims. i don't know what they seem to have whatever. just it's sad. >> the fbi says they plan to investigate the young man's family, his friends, his associates, anything and anyone that may be linked to the 24. they'll investigate any possible isis connections. that's certainly questions that many people have had and whether or not he heeded the group's calls for lone wolf style attacks, but at this point authorities say it appears any of those victims personally. next week the jury in the james holmes murder trial will be asked to make a life or death decision. that's the same jury that found holmes guilty today. it will be back for the sentencing phase of this trial. there are only two options left, life in prison or death. holmes was found guilty on all charges of murdering 12 people and wounding 70 others during that shooting spree in 2012 inside a movie theater in aurora, colorado. tonight relatives of those victims responded to the verdicts. >> we're very happy that this animal, this mon stern, will never see the light of day. -- monster, will never see the light of day. >> this isn't over for any of those people. everyone else will walk away and it's over, right? it's another day at the job, but it's not for any of these families. >> defense attorneys conceded from the start holm was the gunman, but they'd argue -- holmes was the gunman, but they'd argued he was guilty by reason of insanity. obviously the jury wasn't buying it. new tonight a warning from the d.c. attorney general's office about a new scam targeting businesses possibly costing them thousands of dollars. it involvers scammers posing as pepco bill collectors and they are alarmly good at it. garrett haake joins us now live from the customer service department in northwest washington. >> reporter: i spoke to one customer today who was so worried that his power was going to be cut off in the middle of his dinner restaurant rush at his business that he rushed down to this pepco office to pay what turned out to be a nonexistent debt. only then he realized he'd been fooled. this business owner got an odd phone call while he was preparing for his dinner rush back? january. the caller claimed to be with pepco and said bow tie had failed to pay a retired deposit. they needed 1,300-dollar fast or else. >> as a result -- $1,300 fast or else. >> as a result, our power would be shut off that afternoon. it was a courtesy call from pepco and they were going to shut our power off in two hours. >> reporter: rather than trying to ask for a manager and getting transferred, he called calling them back. >> it all continued to ring true. >> reporter: the caller asked for a money order, but the owner rushed out for cash instead and instead of waiting for the cammers to pick it up he ran right to the neighborhood pepco office. >> then it completely clicked for me that i'd been scammed and i felt so stupid. >> reporter: the scammers have targeted other businesses across d.c. since january including the common restaurant on connecticut who threatened to call the cops and the steak and eggs restaurant on wisconsin whose owner also went to pepco. the attorney general's office said today the scammers successfully fleeced at least three d.c. restaurants hitting one for $1,000 another for 500 they're still at it prompting a warning today by the a.g. and a business owner who nearly became a victim himself. >> i think they've called us here at bow tie probably four or five times since then and then we just opened another restaurant last month and in the past week we've gotten two phone calls. >> reporter: part of the theory here is that the scammers are targeting businesses where different people might pay the bills every month hoping that someone will make a mistake. the a.g.'s office thinks there might be other victims out there. if anyone else has been targeted by these scammers, they're asked to call the mpd's fraud unit. reporting live downtown garrett haake, wusa9. >> you know this is an important warning, garrett, because last week dominion power warned about a similar scam and urged businesses there to hang up if they get one of these calls. pepco tomorrow us tonight the company never threatens to cut -- told us tonight the company never threatens to cut off service without working out payment options and it never asks for a specific amount to settle a balance. a pedestrian is left with critical injuries after a hit and run accident last night along the 8300 block of annapolis road in new carrollton. investigators say it appears the woman who was hit was not in a crosswalk. the suspect's car is described as a dark toyota, possibly a camry with some front end damage. if you know anything about this case, contact prince george's county police. montgomery county police have released the name of a pedestrian killed this morning in wheaton. she was 45-year-old maria dolores posades. the accident happened around 11 a.m. not far from where the victim lived. a car went out of control, crossed three lanes, hit a utility pole and then hit the pedestrian. the driver stayed at scene. police identified the driver as 83-year-old mary also tabb of north bethesda and they are still investigating. it's a stomach turning attack all caught on camera. the victims say they were beaten for their bmx bikes. >> now police are upping the rewards for information about the attackers. ellison barber is in northwest where this all went down. ellison, this was a tough one to watch. >> reporter: it was and d.c. police are now offering up to $5,000 for anyone who helps to id some of the people who may have been involved in saturday's attack. it happened right here on the 1100 block of r street northwest. the video which we are going to show you is a bit graphic, but it's that vitality that has some bikers in this area very concerned. >> right of a left i heard somebody got jumped out here for a bike. >> reporter: edwin garcia was at the shaw skatepark on saturday for something called bike jam. >> it's like a bmx concert, so everybody rides and at the end of the night, whoever is the best rider kind of gets a prize, kind of like a skate date, just for fun. >> reporter: but the day wasn't fun for one of the riders. the person lying on the ground and being stopped on in this cell phone video told usa he and some friends spent the day at that competition. they decided to sight see afterwards and say they were just heading to their cars when at least 15 people started to attack them. >> i believe i could have been stabbed or anybody or killed or seriously injured because it was a lot of people. they could have really done anything they wanted to really. >> reporter: police say four people were beaten up for their bmx bikes. >> taken were two bicycles, two pairs of sneakers, cell phone and a backpack. >> reporter: they found the backpack, but they're still looking for the expensive bikes, the five people in this video and anyone else reportedly involved. >> right now it's too early for us to tell whether or not they've been involved in any other incidents, but we are obviously checking that. >> reporter: the video is horrible, but some say things like this is the dirty side of living in a city. >> it's unfortunate, but it doesn't surprise me. it's just the nature of living in a big city whether it's d.c., new york or san francisco. >> reporter: after seeing the video these bikers say they'll be extra careful when they head out of the park. one of the things i learned from speaking with those guys at the park is that these bikes even though they're small, they aren't cheap. they easily cost $1,000, sometimes up to $3,000. one of those guys told me someone tried to steal his bike just a little while ago, so bruises and a broken nose. police are asking anyone with information to give them a call. now to a peeping tom's case in maryland, today the owner of ram's head taverns pled guilty to secretly videotaping women in his bathrooms. 37-year-old karl muehlhauser was busted when his camera dropped from its hiding place and fell onto the restroom floor right in front of a woman who then took that camera to the cops. >> it happened over the course of three years and we were able to identify multiple bathrooms. >> now following today's guilty plea a judge sentenced muehlhauser to 90 days in the howard county jail and he was immediately taken into custody. he still faces a class action lawsuit being filed on behalf of women who may have been videotaped without even knowing it. investigators in bedford, virginia, are making it clear they're looking for more suspects in the alleged murder of the lyon sisters. sheila and katherine lyon vanished back in 1975 during a trip to wheaton plaza. prosecutors unsealed murder indictments yesterday against convicted child sex offender lloyd welch. today in a newly unsealed affidavit we learned that according to police, relatives knew in 1975 that welch was on the run from police and had two girls with him, yet none of them made the call this might have saved their lives. among those under the microscope, welch's uncle richard welch. >> he remains and will be a primary focus as we move forward now that lloyd welch has been charged. >> a relative allegedly told police that in 1975 lloyd welch came to the family's property in bedford, virginia, with a duffel bag full of bloody clothes he wanted washed. another relative said he helped lloyd welch burn two duffel bags each weighing 60 to 70 pounds. they said it smelled like death. a heads up if you're heading out overnight on the beltway, right now three lanes of the outer loop have been shut down right near the more man temple so road crews can perform emergency repairs to the $100,000 or more a year. >> well, we have to do some additional research. >> reporter: his staff told him the problem only went back a year and a half. back through august of 2013? farcing enforcement's current train -- parking enforcement's current training manual predates that and again wrongly identifies parking under a bridge as a violence. how does that happen? >> i'm not sure. >> away from a plane crash in washington state tonight is speaking out. 16-year-old autumn veatch was the lone survivor of last saturday's patch flying with her grandparents when they hit some bad
