we're doing really well this morning, no issues on the trains or buses this morning. but it's out in oakton we're keeling a crease owe on the accident that's -- eye on the accident that's closed fox mill road at fox vail drive this morning. should be there within next moment or so. so coming up in ten minutes a live picture, that's the goal but traffic is being diverted on to hunt road. so for commuters out in oakton you'll need to be mindful of this that the morning. a live look from the cameras this morning shows us this is eastern tv -- kenilworth avenue and eastern avenue. inbound on 50 no problems. coming down from areas like frederick on i-270, you might see a little bit of a slowdown as you're approaching the beltway. but it should ease up into rockville. over to you. i'm nikki burdine live in takoma park. and we just got to the scene but i want to show you what's going on here. police tell us they responded here this morning around 2:00 for reports of a shooting. now they have not confirmed to us yet if there were any victims and what their injuries were. and we not even clear where it happened. but this is the econolodge right next to the quality inn on new hampshire avenue. and it happened again at about 2:00 and i was just talking to a friend of one of alleged victims. and he tells us that his friend was shot in the leg. police have not been able to confirm that information with us. but the alleged victim's friend tells us that his friend is going to be just fine. we are awaiting details from public information officer here with takoma park police. as soon as we find out we'll let you know. live in takoma park, i'm nikki burdine, wusa9. two people are in custody this morning in connection with a sex traffic operation involving kids. d.c. police and if fbi say a lot of the illegal activity was centered around the 3800 block of southwest capitol street in southeast. officers arrested 28-year-old jarnese harris and a 35-year- old man authorities are not naming at this time. they say to do so might harm the investigation which is still underway. two bodies believed to be the missing boaters from stafford county have been found. they were spotted by other boaters in different areas of the potomac river yesterday afternoon. a massive search got underway late wednesday night when a friend reported charles zintner and melissa smarr missing. their 17-foot boat was found early yesterday morning with the music playing and food prepared and the motor running. but no one was on board. attoaccused colorado movie theater shooter james holmes are wrapping up their case. the defense is expected to rest today after spending two weeks trying to convince jurors that holmes was insane and should be committed to the state mental hospital. prosecutors argued holmes was sane and should be executed. jurors could start deliberating next week. 1 people were killed -- 12 people were killed and 70 injured in the attack on july 20th of 2012. battling d.c.'s synthetic drug problem. at noon the mayor will sign a bill into law that will give the police more power to shut down the sale of these synthetic drugs. they are cheap, cleverly packaged, and widely available. a lot of these drugs go by the names of k2, spice or sometimes scooby snuse of these synthetic drugs or synthetic marijuana can lead to hallucinations doctors say and violent behavior. police blame the drugs for the rise in murders, even for the teenager who stabbed a man recently on a moving metro more than 30 times. addicts tell us their zombie like high is very addictive. >> stood there for maybe two, three hours. in a daze. >> i thought i fell asleep and then the police come and pick me up and take me to the hospital. >> still worth it? >> yeah. >> it's just like -- the old days, 1980s. when we had the pcp epidemic in the city and people were going crazy. >> reporter: so the police chief and the mayor hoping that once the bill becomes law later today, that they will have more teeth in their fight after these drugs. and so the first offense if a business is caught selling these synthetic drugs, they will shut down that business for four days. second offense, 30 day closure and is a fine of $10,000. but this is more than just a d.c. problem. we'll have a look at the regional problem coming up in half an hour. we're live downtown, delia goncalves, wusa9. all eyes will be on the south carolina state house this morning. the confederate flag is coming down at 10:00. the battle flag has flown on the state capitol grounds for more than half a century. but yesterday, after an emotional debate about 13 hours long, governor nikki haley signed the law to permanently remove the flag from the state house. the flag will now go to the relic room of the military museum in columbia, south carolina. and even with the confederate flag coming down at the state house in columbia, south carolina, the debate is far from over. the hashtag #takeitdown is trending on twitter. that's because of a heated argument on capitol hill yesterday. some high-profile lawmakers like democrat nancy pelosi want that flag off all federal property including cemeteries. and language was added to a spending bill to make that happen. some southern republicans were very unhappy about that and the argument caused speaker boehner to call off the vote on the legislation saying quote -- the adults in congress will discuss it again in the coming weeks. council members in alexandria, virginia will be talking about stopping a tradition as well. it's flown twice a year in oldtown and take up the issue in september. thanks mike. ahead larry has a look at the morning commute. >> this much we know. weather shouldn't be a factor right erica? thanks. oakton we told you that fox mill road at fox vail road -- drive excuse me is closed because of an accident. apparently a single vehicle got into a crash and snapped a utility pole. sky 9 is over the scene and give us a live look at the situation right now. so both eastbound and westbound lanes of fox mill road are closed and will remain closed as utility crews work to get this pole back up and working order. and it's been going on for the last few hours now and well past the rush hour we're told. so traffic on to hunt road at this point. drivers will need to be cautious as you approach this scene or areas near it. in the meantime, if you can be traveling in areas of southwest d.c -- southeast d.c. no issues this morning. here at pennsylvania avenue at minnesota avenue. traffic is free and clear. of anything just starting to see volume picking up throughout parts of town but again no major issues other than the issue in oakton. around the beltway issue and accident-free here at new hampshire avenue. you can see light traffic in both the inner and outer loop. we'll send it over to you. still ahead a family reunited this morning after three sisters went missing for several days while hiking in wyoming. >> coming up how a pair of cowb we are always happy to talk about the weekend and look ahead. >> indeed. >> we have good reason to. >> yeah. well, especially today and sunday. those are really good days. saturday? a little bit unsettled to start. but then we will get some dry time on saturday as well. i'm going to track it owl for you -- all for you with 9 futurecast in just a moment. let's get it started with a beautiful shot of the michael & son weather cam. one of the planes taking off from reagan national with a gorgeous start to the day. i think a pleasant flight for them. 77 degrees at 9:00 a.m. on the day planner and 8 # at noon. the humidity continues to open develop -- continues to drop into the afternoon hours. it's not going to be a factor for us as we head into the afternoon. also a nice breeze out of the west and northwest is going to make things feel more comfortable. the dew point drops with the winds coming off the mountains. the dew point dropped 66. this morning the dew point was still in the 70s in downtown washington. that's nice to see. the dew point dropping off here and bringing that dryer air from the northwest. it's 74 right now in waldorf but it's 70 front royal. 67 in hagerstown. the cool spot on the map right now. satellite and radar shows that that cold front has slipped to the south of kind of a small cluster of showers though to the west are going to premain to the west during the day today. on 9 futurecast, you can see some of that activity approaching as we head into friday evening. but it doesn't make its way in here instead we'll see the clusters of showers move in on saturday morning. that activity will subside in the afternoon. a lingering sprinkle still possible right around lunchtime. but then saturday afternoon and evening we'll dry out. we'll return to the sunshine and then sunday, is the partly sunny day but another hot one with temperatures returning to the 90s. so here's your three day forecast. today, just beautiful. breezy less humid lots of sun with a high of 88. on saturday after the morning showers will return to some sunshine in the afternoon. again reaching a high of 88 degrees but on sunday we're back to the 90s. it's not going to be terrible yet. partly sunny with a high of 91. in the first alert seven day forecast, mid 90s though on monday and tuesday. and the threat for thunderstorms also returns to our forecast as we head into the workweek. that is your first alert seven day. time for timesaver traffic. larry? thanks. march, train riders den no issues on the trains, vre is on schedule as well. good to go there. traveling southbound on i-270, coming from germantown road down to the beltway, you're looking at a 1 minute commute. -- 14 minute commute. no issues on i-66. none of which are going to slow youdown at this point. but from fairfax county parkway to 27th street northwest, a -- and westbound on 50 from coolington road to 16th street northeast a 14 minute commute as well. a live look outside showings us how things are shaping up here on the key bridge. you can see traffic is still fairly light for those of you making your way into georgetown from virginia. you'll have no problems this morning. and around the beltway, we're certainly free and clear of any issues as well. here at new hampshire avenue and for those of you heading to areas like college park or even parts of silver spring you guys won't have any issues this morning. as you get ready to step out the door. we'll send it over to you. in the news right now, 12 years in prison. that was the sentence handed down to a man who ran and police and then plowed into a minivan filled with women and children. round hayes learned -- ronald hayes learned his sentence yesterday. two women died in the crash and one was pregnant. four kids in the car were also hurt. emotional testimony today as expected at a d.c. hearing about the right to die. under a new measure an adult with the terminal illness could get medication to end their life. the husband of a 29-year-old woman who became a national advocate for right to die legislation is expected to testify. brittany maynard was diagnosed with brain cancer and she moved from california to oregon which has a right to die law to end her life last november. tears of relief this morning from one father whose daughters swept missing for several days on a campings trip in wyoming. >> the women are tired cold and hungry but alive. brian webb has more. >> reporter: the three sisters are key referring today after being -- recovering today after being rescued from reunited with their father. >> cry like you would -- with all your kids at once. >> reporter: a helicopter crew spotted the teenagers on thursday after they were missing for more than a week in the wyoming wilderness. they were found seven miles from their car after a couple of cowboys reported seeing what they thought was an animal and told a local sheriff. >> got a latitude and longitude area. we gave it to the helicopter crew. i would bet within 15 minutes they had told us over the radio, that they had three people waving at them from the ground. >> reporter: megan, erin and kelsey are experienced hikers but new to the jackson hole area, they had a tent and five days worth of food. in the girls' ohio hometown, prayer vigils were held in hopes of finding them. the girls' parents rushed to wyoming to help in the search. >> how are the girls doing? >> they're great. they're great. in good spirits, good health. a little hungry. >> reporter: soon after being e youngest sister 16- year-old kelsey tweeted so blessed by all the love and support. i love all of you. brian webb for cbs news. >> the girls' father believes his daughters' hiking skills saved them. they stayed in one spot and stayed together. firefighters in texarkana, arkansas somehow managed to survive a massive explosion as a home where they were working. this explosion bellyingsation from the attic of the home into the street. look at this. at least two firefighters were inside the home when it happened. the incident is what firefighters call a back draft. >> a back draft is caused from some type of combustibles burning the house and depletes the oxygen inside the structure: but because you removed the oxygen they can't burn. once you introduce oxygen back to it it explodes out in a violent rupture. >> fire marshals say that a back draft like this shows the extreme risk firefighters face every time they enter a burning building both themselves and others. the mother and her 18-month-old child were living in that home but did make it out. and were treated for smoke inhalation. in san diego, coppic con is in full swing and today it's all about "star wars." its seventh installment is five months away but comic-con is offering a look behind the scenes. the director j.j. abrams will join cost members for a special presentation. willie nelson will collect one of the music world's biggest awards. the library of congress will present the star with the gershwin prize for popular song in november. at 82 nelson has been making music for 60 years. he said in a statement that he greatly appreciates the honor. the amy winehouse documentary opens nationwide today after breaking box office records in the uk. fled by car. >> very early in the investigation, so little is known but we do know it happened this morning in the southern town. that's outside of ansbak. it's believed a man and a woman were killed in the drive-by shooting. of course we'll let you know more about this story as soon as we gather more information. meanwhile, new this morning, it's the photo seen by thousands. now the artist who created the picture of the girl simply known as baby doe is making a change. >> julie listen check shows us the upgrade that many people hope will lead to an answer for this mystery. >> on the news, you hear people talking about it. especially local residents. >> reporter: her picture has been hanging in the window of woody's pizza and liquors for a week now. michael says her story is top of mind as it should be. >> just the -- the idea of how could anybody do that kind of harm to a child. >> reporter: you'll find baby doe's image in several area businesses. but investigators say this new image deserves your attention. >> even if it's something very small like this, you know, we want to update the image and we want to make everything as accurate as possible. >> reporter: forensic artist christy andrews is with the national center for missing and exploited children. >> the biggest viral spread of any image that i've ever done. >> reporter: she spent four hours on the first image and is now added earrings after the medical examiner determined the child's ears were pierced. >> if this image can result in identifying this child, you know, i would personally feel you know, amazing to be a part of that. >> reporter: so many want to be a part of solving this case. it's been shared by more than 50 million people on social media and is now getting national attention. but for those in winthrop -- >> inhumane. >> reporter: it's a story that's still so profoundly personal. >> pray to god somebody knows something and comes forward with it. >> the young girl's body was found on the massachusetts' beach last month. so far no one has been able to identify her and an always did not -- autopsy did not reveal a cause of death. good morning it is 6:28. welcome back to unsettled tomorrow. but we'll return to the nice weather on sunday. so a little sandwich of some rain in there. but beautiful sunshine right now on the michael & son weather cam. you can see as we kind of pan around from the southwest water front toward georgetown. and we're looking at the day planner with a lot of sunshine today. just a few high clouds. nothing that's going to bring us any rain. we'll already be at 82 degrees by noon. but since the dew point is much lower today. we won't feel that relative humidity making for that heat index like we had yesterday. yesterday it already felt like it was in the 90s at 11:00 a.m. that's not going to be the case at any point today. today's high temperature 88 degrees and that's where we'll be at 3:00. we're down to 86 at 4:00. current temperature is 72 in leesburg and 71 in couple pepper. it's -- culpeper. it's 74 at andrews and 79 in downtown washington. we have warm air in place but it's not going get hot today because a cold front moved through last night. but we are back to the nice weather as we head into this afternoon. some showers on the way tomorrow though we'll talk about them in the first alert seven day forecast. right now it is time again for timesaver traffic and larry miller. erica thanks. metro riders we are certainly off to a good start. no issues on the rails or the buses this morning. everything is running on schedule. out in oakton that we've been telling you about a trouble spot out there. fox mill road at foxvale road closed as a result of a single vehicle accident. apparently a car snipped a utility pole bringing it down. crews are on the scene right now. this is sky 9 live pictures at this pointment again eastbound and westbound lanes are closed. you're being diverted on to hunt road. so be mindful for those of you that live out in oakton that this is the current situation here on fox mill road. all right, want to give you a look from some of the other cameras how traffic is on i-66. we have an issue on the westbound side just west of route 123. that was blocking the shoulder. not causing much of in the way of delays but if you're travel inbound going through centreville and going through fairfax no issues getting into the beltway. and obviously into town. from our maryland camera we get a better sense of how things are on 270 here at tuckerman lane. noishes and you can see all -- no issues and you can see all traffic froing fleely. -- flowing freely. we are live at takoma park where police are investigating one man shot here at the econo lodge. i'm going to step out of the way and you can see this is where it happened just around 1:30 this morning. takoma park police say they responded to a call for shots fired here and when they got here they saw a large group of people disperring quickly -- dispersing quickly. just a few minutes later they got a call a man was at a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound. police tell us that man was shot in the torso. he has non-life-threatening injuries and expected to be just fine. as far as what led to this shooting, police say that there was a large party here and there were two groups one from prince george's county and one from d.c.. and these groups were apparently having an argument and this was possibly gang related. and that is when the shots were fired. the suspect still on the run. police have not released a description of that suspect just yet because they believe he will be caught soon. this is what else police tell us. >> we conducted a room by room search for the suspect. at this time the suspect is still at large. the detectives are following up on some pretty good leads in the case. and we are pretty sure we will have a conclusion to this event in the near future. >> reporter: police say they do respond to this hotel quite often for a lot of large parties and this could potentially be gang related. i spoke with on of the friends of the victim about an hour ago. he told me his friend is 23 years old and he says his name is gilbert cast listen. and he is from hyattsville. as soon as we get more information on the suspected shooter we'll bring that along to you. live in takoma park, i'm nikki burdine, wusa9. a d.c. teacher's aide accused of having sex with a 16- year-old faces arraignment today. the suspect is carla norde. police say she was found in a car having sex with a special needs student last year. the teenager is a student at eastern senior high school and says she and norde engaged in sex acts about twice a week starting in september of 2014. a man who torched a house in prince george's county is expected to be sentenced today. david coley could get 60 years in prison, prosecutors say he set fire to a two story home in glendale back in may of last year. happened as he was evicted. he was also convicted of firing a shootout officers during that -- shot at officers during a confrontation. a former d.c. fire department worker,tarial mccray was convicted misusing agency credit cards. he charged more than $24,600 over -- $2,600 over four months to fill up cars for other people at discounts. in march kimberly pinckney took a plea deal for charging more than $11,000 in personal expenses to department cards and received a six month suspended sentence and ordered to make restitution. today at noon, mayor muriel bowser will sign a bill into law here inside the wilson building that will give police more power to shut down businesses caught selling synthetic drugs. and a second offense will shut down that business for 30 days and fine the owner $10,000. but this is more than just a d.c. problem. the synthetic drugs have been so popular and so accessible that they are becoming major problems around the region. the ha louis inogens go by k2, spice, or scooby snacks and they cannot be detected by a drug test. arlington police deputy chief dan murray says a high person on synthetic drugs or fake marijuana can seem out of control. >> it takes you know multiple fairly large fairly strong police officers to be able to control somebody who is not feeling any pain. and who has this superhuman strength that's some way shape or form substance induced. >> a manic-like state, just too much energy. thoughts racing. paranoia. and people can become very irritable and reactive in that setting. >> reporter: and that doctor tells us that people have even suffered heart attacks on this drug. and of course here in d.c., the mayor and police chief blaming the synthetic drugs for the rise in murders. even that young man, the 18- year-old who recently stabbed a mano a moving metro -- man on a moving metro more than 30 times, he was under the influence as well. the bill signing happens today at noon. delia goncalves, wusa9. 6:35 now. it seems like the numbs keep going up. as we learn more about how many people are affected by that massive federal data breach. it's now 21.5 million people affected by a series of recent hacks. and now lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are calling for the head of the office of personnel management to be fired. republican speaker john boehner and democratic senator mark warner from virginia say katherine average let that needs to be replaced. she however is defiant saying she's not stepping down. the breach now impacts anyone who applied for a background check. in fact fbi director james comey and most of his family had their personal information compromised. at least some good news for commuters in northern virginia. the ribbon has finally been cut on the new interchange at route 29 and litton hall road in gainesville. the $230 million project includes four new bridges, along with other major safety improvements. the new interchange is the latest in the series of major road projects in the gainesville area. big celebrations are in the works for july 14th. not just because it's bass teal day. if all goes as planned. nasa's new horizons probe will complete its mission to pluto that day. streets when there's a team of search dogs in tulsa, oklahoma that go by sherlock and watson. but the duo wouldn't be possible if one wasn't picked up off the streets. >> we have the report. >> reporter: sherlock and watson. on the hunt for clues. they're tail wagging best buds as members of k-9 search oklahoma but watson has a different background. he wouldn't be here if it weren't for a jinx police officer eating lunch at a restaurant when he saw watson and saw potential. >> and he was a stray. he was begging for scraps apparently he'd been there for a while. real emaciated and he had -- knowledge of search dogs. and just thought there was something special about him. >> reporter: now watson is training to trail. what could be the scent of an elderly person who's missing or a boy scout lost at a campground. the trainer gives watson a scent from a piece of clothing or a pillow case. and starts sniffing. >> i was totally impressed with the way the dog put his nose to the that dew point now down into the mid 60s which means that it's feeling more refreshing out there. right now it's 79-degrees and we don't have a heat index because of that dew point being down in the 60s. right now it is 75 in manassas and 69 in martinsburg and 71 in baltimore and it's 77 at pax river. on our wide view of satellite and radar you can see the cold front that moved through yesterday evening but now another weak area of low pressure that's approaching is going to bring us some showers thunderstorm morning. we keep it -- tomorrow morning. we keep it day today. the sprinkles in the mountains are not going to materialize during the day today but this evening they will push up toward us, you can see that here on 9 futurecast. some evening showers from the south and west approaching. we stay dry in the beltway until saturday, mo. -- morning. here we're looking at 6:00 a.m. saturday with the showers pushing through and they'll continue to go to the south as we head into saturday afternoon. so we're returning to the sunshine by the time we get past lunchtime tomorrow. so we don't need a yellow alert because it looks like the rain is not going to be long-lived. beautiful today though. 88-degrees and breezy and less humid. 88 again tomorrow after the morning rain will return to the sunshine and then we're back to the 90s on sunday and that's where we stay in
