A man is in the hospital after being shot by a corrections officer just moments after he was released from prison. Police say it happened as the former inmate tried to carjack the officer who just had gotten off his shift. Jennifer joyce with the details. Philadelphia police converged on the grounds of curranfromhold prison in holmesburg after 11 00 friday night. Investigators say an offduty corrections officer shot adjust released inmate in the prison parking lot after the suspect wrestled with the officer and tried to steel his car. Starting his life of crime over again within minutes of being released. Police say 26 year old Jamal Bennett boldly committed the crime before even stepping off of prison grounds a free man. The veteran officer, 66 year old michael maritea just finished his shift pulled out private gun and shot bennett in the chest. Police transported the suspect to ariatorresdale hospital where he was admitted in critical condition. You tag a Law Enforcement officer youll get you what asked for and thats what happened. The president of local 159 which represents corrections officer said he visited the officer last night as he recovered from minor injuries. He is in good spirits. He got bumps, bruises, but hes okay. The officer was released from the hospital overnight. North says while it is fortunate that his injuries werent more serious, these attacks on corrections employees happen too often at the prison, and after release. He says procedural changes must be made. For years i been asking the past commissioner, and the present commissioner about this parking lot. In northeast philadelphia, jennifer joyce, fox 29 news. Prison Officials Say the suspect Jamal Bennett has been lock up seven times since 2011. The most recent incarceration for probation violation related to weapons charges. A father is charged in the death of his four month old son. Hamilton Township Police say back on january 29th they found the four month old unresponsive inside his home. In the care of his father, jose rojas here. The baby died at chop a week later. Investigators say the father claims the baby rolled off the bed, but doctors say that the injuries show severe trauma. Rojas faces charges of first degree aggravated manslaughter and a list of other serious charges. A man is behind bars after police say he tried to burn down a south Jersey Police station. Happened back on december 12th y Township Police department. Police say sean shearer here tried to walk into the station with a petroleum inside a bottle, a bottles with petroleum, glass bottle at that. He tried to light the bottle. He threw it at the front doors where the officers and another person were standing. Then he took off. Luckily, the bottle did not light up. Shearer is facing two counts of attempted aggravated arson and criminal mischief. Tim bream, fraternity alum, was the chapters livein advisor at the time. He testified he went to his room after watching a pledge bid acceptance ceremony then left for work the next morning without noticing piazza.
