all right, kathy. >> no time soon, iain. typically we see a cold snap last a couple of days, even in january. and here we are in the new year and this has been going on for over a week and it will continue through this week. look at old city philadelphia. busy on this new year's day. here's look at the high temperatures wilmington, atlantic city made it into the 20's. elsewhere into the teens in philadelphia we reached our forecast high of 19 degrees. as we look at the temperatures it's only seven in the poconos. 18 in philadelphia. 17 in wilmington, millville and ac. but you know that the wind has an impact even a five to 10 miles an hour wind when you have these kind of temperatures makes a difference. it feels like five in philadelphia with northwesterly wind it feels like four in pottstown in the poconos it feels like five below this morning it felt like 20 degrees below zero. so overnight tonight, temperatures are going to be in the teens and the single numbers. and wind chills will go below zero. in philadelphia about five below below toe so tomorrow at the bus stop if the kids walk to school maybe you can give them a ride because it will be very uncomfortable to be outside in he is its specially your explode fresh it could freeze after several minutes with temperatures like that. bone-chilling cold continues this week. bitter wind chills into the end of the week. and tracking a nor'easter our big headline wednesday night into thursday. this could be our biggest snowfall yet. we'll talk more about that coming up with the seven day. >> i wasn't ready to hear that. all right. thanks very much. >> happy new year, lucy. >> happy new year, kathy orr. you can take your fox wine weather authority on the go. track the frigid temperatures along with kathy and sue and scott and the weather team that nor'easter she was talking about it's easy and free. you can download the fox 29 weather authority app from both the i tunes and google play stores. happy happening right now residents in philadelphia neighborhood are dealing with utility disruptioning while battling the blow freezing temperature. water main break and power outages have a whole lot of folks fighting just to stay warm. fox 29's joyce evans live in northeast philadelphia at one of the hardest hit areas. joyce? >> reporter: lucy, my goodnes goodness. you know, the water is back on here on strahles street but not the power. not the electricity. not the gas. as residents try to get warm and try to figure out what to do here. wait until you see these pictures coming up about half dozen homes damaged by that water main break. as they were waking on new year's eve. >> it was horrendous. horrendous. >> reporter: it still is. >> a lot of work to be done. >> reporter: the destruction we saw in eddie flores' basement may take months to repair. >> their trying to put in boiler. trying to put in hot water heater. >> reporter: all he could do was sit by a small fire in temperatures not much warmer than outside while crews work all day trying to make his home liveable again. after water main broke on new year's eve and cell phone video captured the river of water and mud gushing into his home of 25 years on the 900 block of strahle street. >> unbelievable. there's no other words. >> reporter: burst right lou windows and doors. >> it was like niagara falls out of two windows. everything was floating. i had four and a half feet of water downstairs. >> reporter: not how he planned to start his new year. >> we had planned a party up here and whatnot not. we had to call up the people and let them know not to come because we can't do anything in there. >> reporter: philadelphia water department officials say the city will likely put most of if not all of the bill, saying their inspection of a leak the day before the break did not warrant the shut off of hundreds of homes. while they scrambled to address a number of water emergencies in these frigid temperatures. eddie flores says, he had suffered through another water main break just two years ago. >> it just hit me again. >> you had enough? >> i had enough. >> reporter: yeah, he has had enough here and so have some of the other residents. now, eddie and family are staying with relatives while they work all this out and city officials say that those homeowners affected still have to contact their insurance companies while they work out the repairs. iain? >> all right, incredible stuff, thank you, joyce. philadelphia firefighters are investigating fumes detected in four homes this morning. fire department and pgw on the scene after neighbors started smelling gas having higher natural gas reading in their homes around 6:00 theirs morning on the 1700 block of south 21st street in point breeze. crews have since cleared the scene and thankfully nobody was hurt. a 16-year-old new jersey boy has been arrested accused of shooting and killing four people inside a house in long branch, monmouth county much investigators say the victims include the teen's mom, father, his sister and a family friend who lived at the house. police say the teen committed murder just before midnight on new year's eve. the teen's grandfather and brother were also in the home but they weren't hurt. shooting is being described as an isolated domestic incident. >> the investigation continues we have no reason to believe that the public here in long branch or anywhere is at risk of any danger. so we're still on going with this. it's terribly tragic incident. >> right now there's no word on a motive for the shootings. police say a driver who crashed into a bucks county home and overdosed at the time of the accident. this happened at gun road in levittown around sick p.m. last night. authorities say he was unconscious when he drove off the road, his a tree stump, got airborne and then crashed into a house sliding glass door. a man inside that house was near the door when one of the glass doors hit him in the head. ♪ so the eagles wrapped up the regular season and going into the playoffs in two weeks looking for a fresh start. our kristyn rodgers joins you with how the eagles are respon responding after falling to the koy business that their last game of 2017. kristen. >> lucy, eagles are just as frustrated as everyone in my twitter mentions right now. the offense will be the first to tell you they're just not executing. with two week break before their first game of the playoffs, they know what they have to do. yes, eagles didn't have all their starters on the field yesterday and, yes, nick foles was only out there for quarter. but there is some concern about the eagles offense considering they weren't able to put together a drive at all yesterday. they never even made it into the red zone last night. no more dress rehearsals now, the playoffs are coming. >> i think that the biggest thing we need to do and this team needs offensively especially we need to practice. i mean, i think the last two weeks obviously we've tried to, you know, get some rest in and to get guys legs back and i think that's important, um, but, you know, toning down the reps and take away from some of the physical things and stuff like that i think we just have to get back out last. >> coming up later in sports, nick foles talks about why he still sure that this eagles team can get it done plus the dee fels talks about their confidence in the offense as well and of course the latest in the nfl coaching carousel big names are retiring. iain? >> kristen, thanks. tragedy in the skies over costa rica. a small plane crashes killing ten americans including members of two families with ties here in the delaware valley. and -- >> president trump kicking off 2018 on twitter with sharp remarks about the protests in iran. i'm steve harrigan in west palm beach. that story ahead. >> your fox 29 winter weather authority tracking frigid temperatures and nor'easter. kathy's forecast straight ahead. ♪ ,000 deaths in america last year. we need to stand up and say enough. the only way this problem is going to be solved is if we raise our voices. choose help over helplessness, hope over hopelessness. make sure that the lives we've lost will not have been lost in vain. addiction is a disease. when you ask for help, help is there for you. your husband wants to stay free from artificial ingredients. you want to stay free from artificial preservatives. and your debit card wants to stay on a diet. fill your cart with small victories like giant's nature's promise brand. great prices on over 1,300 items. eat well for less. only at my giant. ♪ police identified the woman hit and killed on route 73 this past thursday. investigators say 57-year-old kim jones was walking across the southbound lanes of route 73 near waverly avenue in maple shade when two cars, two cars hit her. she died there. both drivers did stop and talk to police about the crash. now, this is the third person hit within a half mile stretch of route 73 since september of 2017. police are investigate a shooting in allentown that left one man dead and another man wounded. it happened inside a home on turner street after 12:30 this morning. investigators say one man was found outside the home. another was inside. both men were taken to a hospital where one died a short time later. the other is in critical condition. several people were hurt in a crash this morning in los angeles. six people were rushed by medics to hospital. at least three reported to be in critical condition. four had to be extricated from that vehicle. a former montgomery county couple and two children are among 12 people who died in a plane crash in costa rica. leslie weiss her husband mitchell and their children hannah and ari were all aboard the plane when it crashed on sunday. now companies at a recant officials say this happened shortly after takeoff. others who died are a family five from new york. and two pilots. one of the victims was a student at the university of pennsylvania. investigators are still looking into what went wrong. the president and first lady rank in the new year last night in at a lavish party mira lago resort. >> but today the president waste nod time taking to twitter about the turmoil in iran where protests are sweeping the nation. fox's steve harrigan has more from west palm beach. >> reporter: the president taking aim at the hard line islamic regime in tehran. this as a wave of anti government protests continue to sweep across the country. the president tweeting, iran is failing at every level despite the terrible deal made with them by the obama administration. the great iranian people have been repressed for many years. they are hungry for food and for freedom. along with human rights, the wealth of iran is being looted. time for change! city on record. in michigan, slippery roads and white out conditions leading to 40 car pile up on major highway. several cars ended up in ditches along interstate 94 following the crash. drivers said they couldn't see what was in front of them or behind them. >> you couldn't see. you just could not see. you know, you're afraid to stop somebody will hit you and afraid to keep going because you don't know what's up there. >> reporter: more than two dozen vehicles were involved in the crash. >> reporter: deep south feeling arctic cold front, too. with a potential of snow and freezing rain. >> my daughter lives here, and, um, she's a little bit scared about this is her first winter here, and so she's thinking like is it always this cold in new orleans at this time of year. >> reporter: city officials in new orleans activating a citywide freeze plan through later this week. temperatures are expected to dip into the 30s with wind chills making it feel like the 20s. >> dangerously low temperatures have hit eight states in the midwest. the weather service says omaha's low of 15 below zero broke a record that had stood since 18 1884. in new york, laura ingle, fox news. the weather is aren't any bigger than any other noons because the moon's size doesn't change but they appear larger and brighter because moon is closer to earth and its orbit. experts say best time to see this superman around 9:30 tonight. here's a tidbit i think i read about this one. this the moon is actually closer to the earth right now than it's been in the 1940s. sometime in there. so this is super special for this super moon. it is the second in a trilogy. super moons december and january. first was on december 3rd. another will appear on januar january 31st. so very cool stuff. all right. so really icy and lots of area and in washington state it's a big problem. >> power lines are down a lot people have no power. no heat for a lot of people there. this is up near the canadian border grass trees you see power lines just coated in ice. energy officials say approximately 40 power poles just snapped people reporting hear trees snapping from the weight of all that ice. cars and poles are also frozen. roofs just covered with icicles. >> i was on the porch and just looking across the street and, um, the wind picked up and the tree -- all the weight of the ice that was on the tree, um, finally just snapped half the tree off here. >> in some counties fire departments are taking in people because it's too dangerous for the red cross to come open a shelter. >> so speaking of weather, live look at reading, berks county right now. and it doesn't really tell it but you know it. it's just beyond cold. >> yeah. we want to know when we'll finally warm up. kathy is tracking us all in just 15 seconds. it's another cold one out there with temperatures obviously in the teens and those wind chills in the single numbers in old city philadelphia not many people walking just driving. the temperature 18 the wind chill is five. winds out of the west at about 12 miles an hour. if you look at the numbers they're pretty uniform with breezy conditions. allentown 16. millville 17. coldest spot obviously in the poconos at seven. those feel like readings the wind chill, five below in the poconos. six in wilmington. and eight in millville thought those wind chill temperatures will be below zero again tomorrow morning. even in philadelphia. now, lucy mentioned it. we have that super moon tonight. it will be the biggest and brightest of the year. the moon of course is in pari gee the closest to the earth it will come the entire year. 14% bigger. 30% brighter. another super moon on januar january 31st that's also going to be a blue moon. you know how we say it happens once in blue moon. well that's the second full moon in one month. that's the true definition. we have a lunar eclipse on january 31st as well unfortunate it doesn't look it will be voice table for the east coast. try get out there and see that tonight. it already looks spectacular. right now, temperatures in the teens in philadelphia. we'll go nine in pittsburgh. as we go west it gets colder. international falls one. fargo five below and zero in chicago more cold air in canada. 28 below, 26 below, 24 below, and that's locked in to the north. so more cold is going to be diving down just regenerating and reinforcing what we already v this goes tuesday, wednesday, into thursday. even friday and then by the end of the weekend, these temperatures in the single numbers and teens slowly relent. so by sunday, we're hoping to get maybe into the 20s. maybe touching the 30s. getting above freezing for a change. overnight tonight 12 in philadelphia. three in the poconos. nine in allentown. eight in pottstown. and ten in wilmington. during the day tomorrow, we will be seeing temperatures getting a little bit milder well better than today. 21 degrees. sunny and frigid it will feel like it's between zero and four below at the bus stop. as you're trying to walk to the office so please bundle up. of course, that wind will still blow at about ten to 15 miles an hour. now tomorrow is tuesday already. by wednesday, we're going to be talking about snow. a couple different tracks for this coastal storm. it's a nor'easter. could brush by with a little bit of snow and then there's the american model that tries to bring it a little bit closer and brings heavier snow up the i-95 corridor. too early to call this one but just know stay tune this week on fox 29. we'll be on record. it slammed florida and the caribbean with devastating rain. and finally, hurricane maria carving a path of destruction through puerto rico killing dozens of peopling wiping out power to the entire island. >> on october the first, oj simpson walk free after spending nip years behind bars following a botched robbery in las vegas. and just hours later in las vegas, the deadliest mass shooting in american history. 58 people killed and more than 500 wounded. when a gunman fired into a crowded country music festival on the las vegas strip. still no word on his motive. just a month later, another deadly mass shooting. 25 people died including a pregnant woman during a sunday church service in sutherland springs, texas. it's the deadliest shooting in a place of worship in his job and so much more after dozens of women accused him of harass many assault and even rape. but the accusations helped create the me too movement. women and men came forward with stories about sexual misconduct. i profile actors musicians, journalists and politicians all caught up in the scandal. democratic lawmakers john conyers and al franken announce their resignations. then they'res roy moore and the alabama senate race. women accused of harassing and assaulting them years ago when they were teenagers. moore lost the special election to the democratic opponent doug jones. finally, the house and senate pass separate tax bills calling for the largest overhaul of the american tax coated code in more than three decades. looking ahead to 2018, the mid term election is coming up. the whole country waiting to see if voters will reject or reward president trump. we're also keeping a close eye on tensions with north korea and the latest sexual misconduct accusations. of course, we'll be here for all of it. in new york, i'm shepard smith, fox news. we saw winds, rains, snow this year but no weather compares to the hurricanes that devastated the south and puerto rico. fox's janice comes to weather 2017 may be remember as the year of devastating back to back hurricanes or the year of so many destructive wildfires out west. >> scientists say 2017 could become the second warmest year on record. fox news' senior meteorologist janice dean has our look back at the year in weather. >> reporter: from deadly hurricanes to devastating wildfires, 2017 was mark by a host of extreme weather events. january started off deadly in parts of southeast. more than 80 confirmed tornadoes across georgia, the second largest tornado outbreak ever in that state. claiming the lives of 20 people and causing $1.3 billion in damage. in february, northern california receiving its wettest winter weather on record. flooding rainfall and feet of snow triggering flooding and land slides killing five people. jeopardizing the state's orville dam. this as flooding in san jose forced 14,000 residents to evacuate. march was a snowy one in the northeast. a late season blizzard dumping . march also saw destructive tornadoes in several parts of the us. one outbreak in the midwest killing two people as twisters hit missouri and illinois. straight line winds following that system also san hoe hey california. by october, deadly wildfires were making headlines in northern california. killing more than 40 people. the blaze consuming more than 325 square miles. and destroying at least 5700 homes and businesses. another series of devastating wildfires breaking out in the los angeles area in mid december. fueled by dry, gusty santa ana winds. as for the winter ahead, government scientists predicting many americans could get a balmy winter with mild temperatures expected across the south and the northeast. there's a chance of chillier than normal weather from the pacific
