This thursday, you know, i walked out the door, and i had a box of omaha steaks, i guess it was delivered late last night, i went to bed. I left it out there. It is going to be better outside than bringing it inside in the house. Keeping it cold. Nope. It will be frozen by the time i get home. Once again, it is good to have you with us, i know it is cold outside. Lets warm things up, bob kelly, get a check on the roads . Dangerously cold. Make sure you have the seat warmers on, when you sit in the car, stonned your hands like this just for couple every minutes. Rid there. Little reminder here, just how cold it is, lets take you outside, look at this, Franklin Square fountain, look like ice sculpture, doesnt it . Cool. Trickling out there, but down ride cold. 15 degrees in the city. You can see why. Just iced on over. It is pretty to look at. Have you ever been to Niagara Falls in the winter. Yes. Portions of it. Thats our very owe Niagara Falls right there. Dont need to travel anywhere. Maybe south to warm up. You have to find the butte any whatever your situation is, and last time we were above freezing was tuesday afternoon. And we dont expect the temperature to get above freezing for the foreseeable future. And today is colder than yesterday. And yesterday stayed in the 20s all day. Look at the current temperature, it is cents 15 degrees, boys and guesser, feels like three outside with sunrise not until 7 22. Check out these other windchill, it feels like 17 below in mount pocono. Dangerous windchills there. We know folks are spending the week between christmas and new years when the kids are off school, many spending the week skiing, and youve got to be so careful, frostbite, feels like is her know wilmington, feels like one below in readingment kind of get the idea here with deceiving sunshine, only 21 degrees by lunchtime. Twentythree the High Temperature today. We were whining when 23 was low temperature at night, bob kill. This is crazy. I know weve been talking about it, but it is dangerously coal. So coal, again, see the frozen fountain there. Thats reminder that if you havent turned the water off to your garden hoses, todays definitely the day to do that before your whole basement be having water main breaks gallon, live look here route 309, ft. Washington, kind of quiet. Same deal coming in from new jersey, it has been quiet week so far. Usually right after lunchtime, when we start to see the volume pop. Thats when everybody get that cabin fever. And wants to get on out there. Latest from kensington, again, the Ascension ParishChurch Caught fire last night, steve keeley is live on the scene, we go to him in just a moment, but all iced up, around the old parish buildings here, f street between ontario and westmoreland, heff been putting salt down it, wont totally make the ice disappear, because in 15 degrees, just going refreeze, same deal here in abington, Huntingdon Pike atmoredon road, we had overnight fire. Firefighters gone but left behind the icy Road Conditions since septa running a modified schedule on it buses, trolleys, same deal on new jersey transit. We had some signal problems last night on couple of the Regional Rail lines, just hoping that doesnt carry over into the start of our morning rush hour. Thomas, back over to you. I know youll be following that one, bob, thank you. 5 04, we get you outside to breaking news, over night fire at old Vacant Church weve been telling but in kensington, we know there were 19 Homeless Individuals inside at the time. So firefighters trying get them out. And then having to deal with the cold. Steve keeley, on scene this morning, steve . Reporter well, this fire demonstrate how you dont have to shoot up heroin in your arm to have an endanger your life. Because this fire point that out. Here we are, in kensington, the heart of phillys heroin epidemic and crisis, and this church known on the streets as the cathedral of kensington, the former Ascension Church shut by the archdioces in 2012, sold to Real Estate Development for 800 grand in 2014 and used as the inquirers mike newell profile just six months ago, by heroin users. And mike had no problem going in and interviewing them, taking pictures of them, so the billing was not sealed. After mikes report, the city promise philadelphia would seal the building. Look, we have fresh now l i signs on these open doors here, and on the corner, but l i was here in the summer, doing the same thing. How can you seal such a massive block, big building and keep people out. Look at all of the windows, all of the doors on all sides, and theyre going try to do it again. But this just shows how heroin users likely starte start this e trying to keep warm overnight, because this thing isnt being heated. Then you have firefighters here coming and risk their lives to keep the fire from spreading to the housings so close to this place. And so thats how you have heroin endangering firefighters lives if thats how this thing started. So, they got all of the people in there. They counted 19 people when they got here. Saved them. Got them into a warm spot nextdoor, the old rector i, as you see the video from the fire, it was a tough job all night. Because overnight, between 1 00 and 2 30, while the Fire Department was still battling this thing before they got it under control, youve got windchills, 3 degrees, 4 degrees. Youve got 100pound of gear on. That gear instantly freezes when water is hitting it. Add couple of more pound at least to the frozen gear. Then as you see, when we come back to our live picture, there is the bell tower in the background with a crucifix up there. And in the foreground of that, you see the sloped roof firefighters would slide off the roof that wouldnt be good so a lot of trouble, gary in channel of the Department Team out here talked to us about. Keeping the street salted so we dont slip around, still we called in salt truck to salts in the area. Well, here you go. There are the salt t making lap number seven around here. Because theyreflowing around h. There is still firefighters inside with flashlights. It is treacherous in there. Theyve been doing demolition. And beyond this white van, you see the real estate sign that they put up, solutions for real estate, the company says, well, theyll have to find a solution to get their building sealed, to keep this from happening again. This could have been so much worse, if not for the tiff guys here, with engine ten, finally getting took back to the firehouse and maybe warm up. But, what a trecherous night it has been out here for the Fire Department. And it seems like fires in princeton last night, thomas, fires two night ago as we covered in brooke haven. In this cold weather were having a lot of fires from people likely trying to keep warm whether it is starting a bonfire in a old Vacant Church or using extension cords or what have you, thomas. But trouble for Fire Departments all around our area this week. Sadly, may not be the last, steve keeley, thank you, in kensington. The child lived couple every doors down, from her friends home. We talked to some people in the neighborhood, who knew the young girl, theyre saddened, and puzzled, by this tragic lost.
