>> live from center city in philadelphia this is fox 29 news at 11:00. >> all eyes on tropical trouble. hurricane jose off our shore line. monster maria now cat five aiming at puerto rico. for us jose storming closer and the surf kicking up big time. as well as up to 12 to 15 feet. the shore is dealing with beach ear rogue and tidal flooding is another problem. fox 29's dave kinchen is in ocean city. >> reporter: people down here at the shore tell me they can already feel the wind inn dense feig. i feel it right now. folks we talked with say they're going to simply stay out of the water. >> i bare get up with one wave because it took me underreport roar the waves are even stronger tonight. eli's mom is keeping him out of the water due to the high risk of rip currents prompted by hurricane jose off the coast. >> definitely think people should heed the warning and stay out of the water if they, um, even if they're strong swimmers they have to be very cautious. >> we haven't had too many people wading in far enough to worry about that at this point. hopefully we continue that trend. >> reporter: but the ocean city fire department stands ready just in case. and not just for rip currents. they have 5-ton army surplus vehicles on stand by should jose cause enough flooding for water rescues. >> every time we have a possible put them into effect. we'll put them at each station so they're ready to go. >> reporter: for the most part however people just watched as mother nature seemed to glow grow slightly angrier in atlantic city chunks of sand carved away by the many breaking waves and in margate city -- >> my assess many don't go out past your knees. been down here for long time. don't play with mother nature ever. >> reporter: joanne strapoli steers clear of the water all tomorrow as a familiar sight formed a lake on the beach just like the summer by product of the on-going beach construction project. and it could get worse after jose. >> i guess it all remains to be seen. the island, it's all different shape. i hope it work out better than it did down there. >> reporter: emergency responders say they will be watching the changing forecasts as well and when it comes to the beach erosion, local officials will have to deal with that all over again. in ocean city, dave kinchen, fox 29 news. >> now of course hurricane jose isn't the only storm we're watching. hurricane maria has blown up. you're looking at the store shelves in puerto rico cleared out. cat five storm barreling towards the island nation. the country is now preparing for the second major storm this month as best as it can. the extremely dangerous storm now has sustained winds of 160 miles an hour with a life-threatening storm surge. meteorologist kathy orr you've been tracking this. this is is just -- it's a beast. >> it is a beast. you know rye now it's over dominica and could be the same thing that irma did to the islands just to the north of. first we'll talk about jose it's moving again north at 8 miles an hour. maximum sustained winds 75 miles an hour. so still cat one storm. moving well offshore. bending tour the east. and you can see looping around again as an area of low pressure lurking well off the coast, however, still by friday. so it's kind of going to hang out in the atlantic for a little while. the good news is, though tropical storm force winds stay well offshore. brushing by boston and also cape cod nantucket island and martha's vineyard w we look at the wind not quite tropical storm force out of the northeast at 25 monday night. tuesday you can see them as we well. 34 miles an hour gusts out of the northeast down the shore inland 34 miles an hour gusts even in philadelphia. the peak of the win. wednesday we begin see the storms shift by wednesday afternoon you still see a north northerly component to the wind and winds gusting to about 24. main threats gusty winds down the shore. rough surf high seas those waves could break at least 10 feet. tidal flooding at times of high tide. could even see some moderate flooding. and some significant beach erosion. that will be a big problem. here is maria. a category five storm right now over the dominica moving toward the west northwest 160 miles an hour winds. passing over puerto rico right through the entire island nation and then north of hispaniola heading tour the bahamas by friday night. the spaghetti plots take this toward the coast. the southeast coast but offshore and you can see most of this them having consensus but not many of them making landfall. if this tracks over the same path at jose, a lot of that water is churned up that could help to weaken the storm. that's what we're hoping for. overnight tonight low temperatures in the 60s it will be warm and muggy. during the day tomorrow a few spotty showers especially south and east of the philadelphia. but gusty winds. highs mainly in the 70s. on your seven day forecast looking better still breezy for wednesday. thursday looks great. the beginning of fall friday looks terrific. saturday, sunday, monday highs in the 80s. mostly sunny skies looking like a very nice start to the fall season. saturday classes are not in school with classes closed for a second day tomorrow. two sides have been bargaining since january. no agreement and no plan on the table to start negotiating yet again. one northeast philadelphia neighborhood can sleep a little easier tonight. they have been dealing with burglary after burglary after burglary. but tonight, police have caught the guy who they say is behind at least some of those inciden incidents. fox 29's dave schratwieser joins us live from police headquarters and you spoke to one of the victims who actually scared off the guy. >> reporter: yeah, lucy n victim actually a confrontation witness burglar in his very own living room. the guy pull out 95. the homeowner said i'm going to get my gun and the guy took off. >> it was all over in like ten seconds. >> terrence mcnally just walk in the door from work when he came face to face with a knife wielding burglar who had just broken into his house on medford road in the northeast. >> ran to the door and turned around with 95 and said you don't have a gun. give me your wallet. so i said i'm going to get my gun. i took a few steps back towards the kitchen that gave him time to run out the door and down the street. >> reporter: mcnally scared the burglar off not before he grab his wife's wallet, credit cards and cash. he's one of more than a dozen homeowners in this neighborhood victimized by a burglary suspect since early august. >> all mostly overnight burglaries much the screens removed. they entered the house, the person enters the house while people are sleeping in the house. >> reporter: over the weekend police arrested 34-year-old jason hilbert and charged him in six burglaries. he's a suspect in nine more. police say the burglar stolen thousand of dollars in cash, cell phones, computers and four cars. >> we have arrested him on numerous occasions including five prior burglaries in the same area back in 2011 and 12. >> most burglaries have occurred in the same neighborhood where hilbert lives. he was picked up friday after he allegedly broke into three homes in an hour. >> he had proceeds from three other burglaries in his possession. >> he needs to be sent away and learn a lesson. >> reporter: now, hilbert warded held on thee hundred thousand dollars bail. four of the cars stolen during this burglary spree have been recovered. police are awaiting dna and fingerprint tests to see if they can link hilbert to any other burglaries. lucy. >> we'll see what happens. thank you, dave. 14 years old, face timing as she crossed the street and tonight prosecutors have charged the driver who they say hit her in abington county -- actua acty being ton. police say he was driving 46 in a 25 miles an hour zone. the girl was crossing the street at high land avenue in canterbury road on august 23rd when her focus was on her phone and clark hit her. the her family shared her picture with us and says she's still recovering from severe injuries. two lives possibly saved tonight in kensington. septa police came to the rescue of a pregnant woman not once but twice. she had overdosed both times. fox 29's chris o'connell is live at septa headquarters in center city. chris, it's just terrible. >> lucy, septa police officers just started carrying narcan a couple weeks ago in response to the city's opioid crisis. well, tonight, a woman's life is saved by septa police officers and quite possibly the life of her unborn child. >> anoher sad and sobering reminder of the opioid crisis. septa police say officers responded tonight to a woman seven months pregnant overdosing in anallilallily on the 1800 blf hilton street in kensington. officers you've narcan to revive her. >> it took two doses of narcan she regained consciousness. at that time the philadelphia fire department came on location and she refused their services. >> reporter: instead police say the woman went back on to the street. 45 minutes later, cops find the same pregnant woman slumped over the steps at the k and ael stop overdosed again but this time paramedics rush the unconscious woman to the hospital. >> it's devastating. absolutely devastating. it's heartbreaking to see this happen. i'm a father. i can only think about my own thin something like this happened to my own children. it's terrible issue. >> reporter: and tonight no word yet on how that woman is doing. but we know she's not facing any criminal charges. tonight. lucy? >> hopefully to get her help and get that baby help. thank you much, chris. lower southampton township police are looking for the driver of a silver suv who they believe tried to lure two young children into his car yesterday. the mother of a nine-year-old girl called police saying the man in the suv asked her daughter and her eight-year-old friend to get in and when they said no, he drove off. one of the girls said that a woman was also in that suv. next at 11:15, her son was a hero. who died serving our country. and not. ♪ ♪ streets of philadelphia little bit safer after a dig big drug bust. philadelphia police seized 600 grams of deadly fentanyl and heroin on the 1,000 block of rosalie street in oxford circle. it is not the first time they have found drugs on that street. earlier this year authorities seize add massive amount of those same drugs nearby. the street value a million and a half dollars. prosecutors have charged ten people in both cases. the student body of kaboni university is showing sail solidarity tonight after a student found a racial slur on her dorm door over the weekend they gathered this evening locking arms and praying together to show support for freshman sania van. she found the slur on her door late saturday night and since her her older sister has met with administrators to discuss the issue. radnor township police are also investigating. >> this is not okay. me backing down says they got what they want. they caught me to go away. >> i kind of won't be from the university. dwayne quellly was hero whether he was serving his country overseas or helping people on his block in willingboro, new jersey. had he passed away nine years ago but his grand lodge initiated this street renaming ceremony and his mother says now she has another memory of her son every time she steps outside her home. >> like something is missing all up through here and everything else. just to talk about it. >> vera kelly is overcome with grief thinking about her son army major dwayne system kelly killed in iraq june 24th of 2008. >> dwayne was hero even out in the street he would help anybody. >> reporter: very are manages to squeeze out smile when she thinks about this day two week ago. these pictures capture a ceremony honoring her son with the sign renaming the willingboro street he grew up on. it now reads majored d kelly w way. >> it was program for all of the things that he had belonged to. >> major kelly was also a 20 year veteran with new jersey state police. they came out in numbers to celebrate his honor. >> very honorable to know that's my son. >> major kelly's wife and daughter came from north jersey to share in the honor with gut add home that felicia marshall and her fiance' recent bought. she and her four children were at home at the time of the fire spread to their home on the south 58th street from a neighbor's home. everyone did get out of her hom& safely but it's a complete loss. marshall is eight months pregnant and training to become a teacher. she had hoped to build a home daycare at her place but those plans the local effort for the international day of piece which is observed around the world on september 21st. >> here's the challenge. how do you get people to care? >> i want the whole neighborhood to know, like, oh, the community needs to spread more piece. like too many kids out here dying today. there's too much violence. too much racism a lot going on that needs to be stopped. >> charlotte and her classmates are playing at least a small part. they were invited to be background singers with the band tjp and today they perform the song get together as part of peace week. >> ♪ come on, people now, smile on your brother ♪ >> it's just a song the students, the band event organizers also believe it could be one of those individual actions that they can share with friends and peers who need to hear how peace week touched them. >> i'm having fun like everyone is so happy around me like it's just a bunch of love and like happiness. in watching them perform yeah they were having fun. ♪ >> but they said sharing this kind of fun is what a lot of people their age need to understand is okay. pay attention to what you're doing. you don't react so like fast to things. fun is when you're actually
