feels like 96 degrees right now in physical. so the headlines the heat wave continues. also there's an air quality alert for a part of the area and then it looks like as we progress throughout the week better chances for scatter showers and thunderstorms. that forecast when i come indoors. back to you. >> all right. scott, thank you. two contractors working on a building in north philadelphia were shot after their scaffolding touched some live power lines. it happen this morning at 16t h 16thth ox for street. a 27-year-old man was thrown from the scaffolding by the shock he fell four stories to the ground. he is in extremely critical condition. other man was burned on the hands and arms and is able is in stable condition. 19th district police officers will meet with residence of the overbrook neighborhood to talk about the safety of their community. on august 7th a bakery owner was shot in the face behind her store. on the 7500 block of haverford avenue. that shooting sent her to the hospital in critical condition. a week later just a block away a man was shot while ordering some water ice. police are trying to find that shooter tonight's meeting with the community is at 6:00. >> pennsylvania congressman chaka fattah is asking two u.s. house committees to investigate possible prosecute al misconduct in the racketeering case against him. fattah sent a letter today to the judiciary oversight committees. he's asking that they review all material related to his case for unconstitutional or unlawful behavior. grand jury indicted the philadelphia democrat last month on several charges including racketeering, conspiracy, bribery and male fraud. >> we are now just 40 days a way from the pope's visit to philadelphia and in ants paying of the historic visit the archdiocese of camden is calling on parishioners to help those in need. >> church leaders want the masses to take up the pope' challenge of hearing the cry of the poor. fox 29's sabina kuriakose is and turning awareness into action. now, catholic charities tells me that with all of the noise surrounding the pope's visit from the crowd to the road closures they want to bring the message back to the core focus of the pope's visit. day in dane out, the catholic charities food pantry in westville helps those in need. but emptying shelves showed demand is hard to keep up with. the non-profit hopes pope francis' visit will bring new life. >> we take all the donations we can get most everything we do from donations. >> reporter: as the diocese of camden begins counting down 40 days until francis, the focus surrounds taking on the pope's challenge of hearing the cry of the poor. in the state's post impoverished county. >> this arrival of the holy father nearby gives us an opportunity to very much focus on the poor here in our diocese of camden. >> the pope's mission and like ours is to take care of everybody. kind of the human dignity. they're a human, they need help we can give them and treating everybody with respect and guide them to place better for them. >> reporter: westville pantry serves 25 families a week. catholic charities wants to raise awareness of poverty in south jersey but wants to give people tools to react by donating or volunteering. hoping to harness the energy of the 1.5 million people expected to descend on philadelphia to greet the pope turning faith into service. >> they come to our open houses. they can see what they can do as volunteers. how they can help to, um, do their part. >> reporter: and those open houses will be held at catholic 50,000 people turned out for sunday's big show. they estimate the concert generated $24 million for the struggling city's economy. more than 3,000 hotel rooms were booked by those attending that concert. rascal flats will put on another concert this thursday and officials are hoping to have the same success. august 17th, 1975, 8 philadelphia firefighters died while battling a massive fire in south philly. and today 40 years later, the city is honoring and remembering them. the explosion and fire broke out the gulf oil refinery at 6:00 in the morning it took sick days to bring it under control. mayor nutter and other city leaders join the families of those fallen firefighters this morning at the fireman's hall museum. during the memorial ceremony the philadelphia fire commissioner delivered a message to the families left behind. >> never ever erase the pain and the hurt that you must feel due to your loved ones. however, this dedication service bravery and heroism will live forever. >> four firefighters were part of the fight at the refinery were at today's ceremony. >> some greyhound bus passengers trying to get to new york city say they were left stranded in philadelphia this morning. riders called us after they were told that there was no bus to take them to new york. they waited several hours before they were finally able to get on a bus. a spokesperson for greyhound tells fox 29 there's been increase in demand from the philadelphia market and the bus liner is contracted rental companies to cover the demand but greyhound says one of the companies didn't show up this weekend. passengers were on that are way again around 7:30 this morning. some people are pushing for a plan that could get you tens of thousands of dollars. all you have to do is should kidney donors get compensated? an idea kicking up a lot of controversy but the push is on to make it happen by people who say too many patients on transplant lists are simply dying. fox 29 weekend's bill anderson joins us with a look at this debate. bill. >> reporter: lucy it real sal debate that people are starting to consider. simply because they are over 120,000 people in the united states waiting for organ donations and 18 die every day while waiting. organ donation do's continue to be on the rise. but some think the only way to get the donations we need is to incentivize with tense of thousands of dollars. >> they're nearly 6,000 people in pennsylvania in need of organ donation and they've been trying to reduce that number for years. but now a controversial proposal by an actual kidney recipient dr. sally is a tell we incentivize people by paying them as much as $50,000 to be living donors. >> something on the order of attack credit, a contribution to a retirement account, anyone who is intereste interested in giviy while alive would be able to be rewarded in that way. >> reporter: doctor is a tell proposed a government funded program that would incentivize people to donate their organs, and help close that need. but donor programs like gift of life here in pennsylvania say that paying people for their organs that's just wrong. >> to give, you know, large sums of money and some people propose $50,000 to donate a kidney to someone we think is really out of line because the idea is that, you know, we're supposed to care for our fellow man and our family members. >> reporter: currently the government agrees with mr. nathan because paying for organs is currently illegal. but doctor is a tell wants to change that law because although waiting for a donor work out for her, she says for too many people it just doesn't. >> waiting list is between five and 10 years. and if you're already very sick with diabetes or have heart disease chances you're going to make it those five to 10 years are not very good. the gift of live program has hundreds of living donors and thousands who have signed up to donate upon death. even though there's a current push for potentially paying for organs. they still believe that doing the right thing for the right reasons is still the best solution. the people at the gift of life told me they have some really bill, thank you very much. we'll see you then. a philadelphia non-profit dedicated to improving education is awarded $2 million grant from the gates foundation. the ed camp foundation offers professional learning for teachers. it started here in philadelphia back in 2010 and it's expanded to 25 countries. the executive director of ed camp says much of the grant money will be made available to teachers through discovery grants. >> discover row grants which are grants to teachers after they have come to an ed camp and want to implement one of the new ideas in their classrooms. >> he haded camp welcomes any educator no matter what their background, school a initiation or school affiliation. >> talented educators at lasalle are getting the chance to show off their stuff. an exhibit at the university's art museum called up against the wall faculty artworks is about to open. the pieces all created by faculty members are now hanging at museum in olney hall. the exhibit opens at the start of the fall semester. philadelphia mayor michael nutter headed to pittsburgh to headline a candidate's comedy night in homestead wednesday. mayor nutter was a dj before entering annual comedy event raises money for children's programs. wildfires continue to burn across the western u.s. and the pacific northwest tonight. mandatory evacuations nor in effect in oregon, reporter: fire crews throughout the west are being hit hard by a growing series of wildfires brought on by high winds and dry conditions. they came quick. it came hot and heavy and then the winds kicked up and it just was unstoppable. >> reporter: in washington state, more than 50 structures destroyed by the shell land fire one of six fast-moving wildfires that burned through more than 155 square miles so far. local officials say it will take time to the full extent of the damage. >> the lumber company and several other structures including residents were burned. that is still closed. >> reporter: here in california crews are working to get a handle on two wildfires near los angeles. one blaze in the angeles national forest is about 20% contained after burning through at least 500 acres of forest. the other in mounted bellow about 8 miles east of downtown la. unusual amount of fire activity now also having an impact on air quality. the smoke combined with low winds and hot weather prompting air quality warnings throughout northern calf calf. >> we're seeing impacts. it's being drawn down through some valley areas into the bay area. >> got a lot of different people who is suffering from asthma and they're definitely taking the heeding. >> reporter: wildfires prompting evacuation in oregon and idaho where a 70-year-old woman lost her life after falling while she's after dozen or so injured after a huge explosion in thailand. you can see it happen in the security camera video. the blast at a popular shrine ripped across a busy intersection during the evening rush hour in bangkok. witnesses say it sun like a huge thunder clap. right now investigators say it looks like a bomb caused the explosion. but they don't know who set it or why. and now to the other deadly explosion in asia. protesters are demanding answers from the chinese government after last week's chemical blast that kill at least 114 people. 70 people are still missing and thousands are homeless. but residents say the government is not giving many answers and they're worried about the threat of toxic contamination. so far officials say both air and water are safe but they have evacuated people within a 3-kilometer radius from the blast. no word yet on what sparked that explosion. indonesian search plane spotted the wreckage of a missing airliner that crashed into a mountain yesterday. the aircraft went down in bad weather remote mountainous area of the country's eastern most providence. 49 passengers including children and infants and five crew members were on board. four postal workers were also on that plane and they had close to $500,000 in aid they were delivering to remote villages in that poor province. getting to the crash site is going to be very finding the man who attacked a customer at the lancaster hoagie city store on the 600 block of north fourth street. the suspect grabbed a licensed gun from the customer and fired. that shot ricocheted (laughter). >> that was good. >> summer in the city, baby. >> exactly. august we're still dealing with the heat. another heat wave it's official today. the fourth one of the year. it looks like it will stick around for at least one more day but take look at ultimate doppler. pretty quiet at first glance. but we'll zoom in yeah parts of the area looking at some downpours. we're looking at very heavy rainfall right now around the boulevard as you move toward welsh road you can see around bustleton, valley falls just be on the look out for brief downpours in that area. this is what we call an air mass thunderstorm it doesn't really have whole lot of steering mechanism so it will likely just kind of rain itself out. but you can see the red, the orange really heff vo rainfall in this particular area. just be mindful of ponding on the roads. that cell will likely rain itself out. better chances for some scattered showers and thunderstorms off to the south and west of us right now and this will move in wednesday through about friday bringing muss rain as well as some temperature relief. look at the number right now. 93 degrees currently in philadelphia. 87 in wilmington as well as millville. 87 degrees right now in atlantic city. look at allentown, reading, 92 degrees. those are the actual air temperatures. but you factor in that humidity, how your body reacts it feels like nick right now in philadelphia. mid 90s as is what it feel like in reading and allentown by tomorrow feels like temperatures will be approaching the triple digits. add insult to injury we still have air quality alerts especially along the i-95 corridor until midnight. so asthma, upper respiratory disorders limit your outdoor expose insures. we have that big bermuda high acting like a heat pump across parts of the area that continues to usher in the heat and humidity. but we will see slightly cooler temperatures as we move toward the latter part of the week and upcoming weekend. lower humidity. so take a look. you can see 94 in raleigh. 88 new york city. low 90s in dallas. look at the triple digits right now in phoenix as well as vegas but the humidity levels are much less than what we're dealing with and then take a look at the cooler air towards sections of montana. part of that air will be moving in our direction for the latter part of the week and weekend. take a look at the numbers tonight. low 70s in the city. 66 degrees in the suburbs. we'll keep the mugginess, keep the humidity on going as well. tomorrow it's hazy, hot and humid. 93 degrees will be the high temperature and then as we move toward the middle and latter part of the week some disturbances will move through with better chance force some scattered showers and storms. knocking those temperatures below 90. and then take a look at saturday at the ripping link. temperatures top out around 86 degrees. less humid for the eagles certainly not as hot as what folks were dealing with yesterday afternoon at the linc. >> eagles were hot though. >> yes, they were. >> they were on fire. >> they were on fire. we got some rain coming which is good, too. >> my garden needs it. >> my jar, too. >> how are your plants. >> i missed one day of watering they were not happy. >> you might want to add milk to your coffee tomorrow morning. >> doing that could actually help you look better. interesting story. i think you'll listen to this one. the pope's visit to philadelphia will be memorable no matter who you are. but one group in our area deeply personal collection to the holy father. the transformation they've seen in pope francis. >> plus wanted a bold bra band bandit. a woman steals thousands of dollars worth of lingeri linger. tonight at 61:00 of the theft wasn't a secret for very long.
