Fox 29 got the first look at the new vans that come complete with padded interiors and individual seat belts for prisoners all designed to protect them. Obviously since baltimore thats been a concern for the departments around the country. Reporter the vans are about to hit the street this fourth of july weekend. Theyre being added to the departments fleet just months after the death of 25yearold freddie gray in baltimore. He was allegedly injured in a socalled rough ride by Baltimore Police in a prisoner transport van. Several officers are now chargeed charged. Obviously you learn as you go along and when baltimore had the issue that i dont know whether or not that was the cause of injuries or not but certainly something that would make you think whether or not this an additional step we need to take to ensure the safety of those people were transporting. Reporter the commissioner says the departments older transport vans are also in the process of being upgraded as well with more padding and seat belts. Also there three of the original gay pioneers whose bravery 50 years ago ignited the lgbt Civil Rights Movement here in philadelphia. Well dressed men in suits and women in dresses carrying polite signs started a revolution. They chose july 4th for the first picket just 40 of them gathering in front of Independence Hall but it was the largest demonstration for gay equality in the world. It cost them everything. Those people were incredible. Back then, you could be arrested for being gay. You could lose your job. You could be alienateed from your family for them to be out there in public saying they were gay fighting for gay rights was incredibly courageous thing to do. If you dont have your familiar and you dont have your job and you dont have your apartment, you could be homeless by the time you got home from the picket. Thats essentially what was at stake. Reporter frank had lost his job. The shy scientist was fired for being gay and sued. He lost his case all the way up to the Supreme Court but gained a movement. Instead of backing down he gallon van knifed people and sparked gay civil rights. They brought us out closet of a place where everyone had to always hide. Frank was the faster the lgbt movement and philadelphia barbara gidding the mother she founded the new york chapter of the First Lesbian Organization and edited the magazine the ladder. Together they brought activists from all over to philadelphia each fourth of july for what became known as annual reminders reminders.
