Today metro Board Members will take action on refunds to metro riders when your trip takes too long. Many riders sometimes find themselves late to work due to no part of their own when metro has issues. Now the Transit Company wants to ease those setbacks. Melanie alnwick is live at the vienna metro station with details. Good morning. Reporter good morning, steve and allison. Safety and reliability at the top of metro riders minds when it comes to confidence and now this program is intended to increase the confidence of those regular riders. Basically trying to keep the regular riders riding metro and trying to win back some of the customers that metro lost. Metro says today thats trains arrive on time nine out of 10 times, a very good rate for them. Still ridership is down. Many people telling metro they have concerns about reliability. Now after the safe track program, new rail cars and improved scheduling metro is so confident in its ability to deliver on tim during rush hour, that it is ready to back it up with a financial money back guarantee. Time is more important than money. But, yes, it would help. It would ease the pain a little bit of being late. Reporter now, the customer Confidence Program as its called would apply to rush hour trips that are delayed 15 minutes or more and you have to have an eligible smart trip card in order to be in this program. That card has to be registered. That is so that they can go ahead and do those refunds for you, those refunds on metro rail would be automatic. The system would know if your route was delayed, if your ride was delayed that you would get an email alerting to you that and then five days later you would get a credit on your smart trip card. Metro bus applies to those riders as well. However theres going to be a web based system for riders. But other things may not apply like major weather large planned Improvement Project or major regional emergency. Metro says those would be outside of the customer money back guarantee. Its metro may have the ability to black out certain dates if they think maybe ahead of time that theyre going to have some problems with on time schedule. The whole plan is going to cost about 3. 5 million. Metro says thats money well spent if it means it can retain its ridership. The plan goes up for a vote in committee today and then if it is eventually approved by the entire board, we expect that it would start to kick in sometime around the first of february.
