Tuck joins us now with the first check on the forecast talk about the threat of freezing rain which is really what were worried about this afternoon, right, tuck. Hard to believe with temperatures as cold as they are this morning were talking about freezing rain. Upstairs several thousand feet temperatures are going to warm first then work their way down to the surface but in the meantime were looking at this period later this afternoon early this evening where i think some light freezing rain is possible for most of the area. Theres a live look at your its a weak system out to the west but its moving in our direction and we could expect a wintry mix to break out around here by early afternoon and again, its not so much that were going to get a lot of a lot falling from the sky but all it takes at a little bit of rain that freezing at the surface to give us issues and because of that weve got a Winter Weather advisory for most everybody. If youre in Southern Maryland, lower Eastern Shore, South Central virginia there you are not under a Winter Weather advisory but everybody else is. Again i think ill will start as a wintry mix and probably transition to plain old rain. It will freeze on the surface. Sidewalks and roads are likely to become extremely icy this afternoon. Yeah, you can see the ice all over the intersection here, left over from the water that was flowing downhill from the water main break up the street there on porter between 34th and 35th. I can tell you that looks like those repair crews are making some decent progress. They already pulled out a broken section of main. Now, sounds like theyre working on trying to get a new section put back in. So, that is the good news here especially when they can get these repairs done so quickly. They usually try to prioritize them based on impact to the neighborhood and traffic surrounding areas so this one definitely a priority. It probably happened a little before 3 oclock this morning. Still a little bit of a mess though on the streets here. The after effects of that. We have seen some d. C. Water trucks coming through here with some some salt and deicer trying to get some of this cleared up. This is just one of many, many problems that d. C. Water and wssc have had but youre looking at video right now on back road in fort washington,back avenue, excuse me, where the water main break caused a ton of water to just flow down the street and into homes flooding homes and flooding basements. So, that is also one of the problems that you have to worry about when you have so many water main breaks here. Were talking hundreds and hundreds of water main breaks throughout d. C. And suburban maryland just over the last month. So, theyre working on tackling it but we know this is a problem that happens all the time. Just because warmer air moves in aloft several thousand feet up its going to take awhile for temperatures at the surface to kind of core respond to that so we are concerned well have an icing event this afternoon. This will be during the afternoon hours this will move in and it will only take a little bit to start to cause some major icing issues. Thats why we have a Winter Weather advisory. Southern maryland, you guys will be warm enough, lower Eastern Shore youre not concerned with this but everybody else under that Winter Weather advisory later this afternoon and again this front will move in and there will be a period of icing for most of our region here later this afternoon. There we are at 1 oclock so again, its showing rain and several thousand feet up its falling as rain but when it hits the surface and we just were looking out ground temperatures in the teens it will get a chance to start to freeze so most of this should be pretty light. There we are at 4 oclock. Afternoon, evening rush hour could be compromised. Then things improve tonight although air temperatures really wont warm up a whole lot until tomorrow. Were hoping to get it to 34 today. By tomorrow, this should be a thing of the past and were going to be actually mild most of the week. Look at your 50s by thursday and friday but again, this afternoon, this evening take that icing possibility seriously because its not going to take a lot to get the roads to freeze up with temps as cold as theyve been the last couple weeks. The traffic that youre seeing, that is the outer loop side of things on new inner loop no traffic getting through. Thats because all lanes blocked between university boulevard and New Hampshire avenue. A huge crash there involving at least three cars. Again big scene. No traffic getting through. Skyfox on the way there. Were seeing big backups developing. Again outer loop were going to start to city a rubberneck delay you can see picking up but the inner loop that is shut down between university and the New Hampshire. Caution there. Aside from that 66 eastbound at 28 crash was blocking the left lane. It cleared. What were left with is residual delays there. You can see its a 16 minute trip red zone from 234 to Fairfax County parkway. Overall about a 35 minute delay to get from let me think about this one 234 to the beltway, excuse me there. So much traffic unfortunately going on. 95 northbound at Prince William parkway crash blocking the left lane. So as you move past that point we do have some bigger delays developing. Several water main breaks
