Well, if youre looking to warm up from this bitter cold weather in the Nations Capital you can always go tola and get warm. Weve been dealing with several days straight of subfreezing temperatures the mercury in anchorage hit 45 degrees yesterday. Thats a record high for this time of the year. So people in alaska enjoying warm weather out there and were freezing to death over here on the east coast. I love the banner baked alaska. Whats going on. Tshirts. Thats 45 degrees much thats balmy. He could see the first snowflakes of 2018 this time tomorrow big winter storm will be across the east coast. Churning its way up the coast and the worst of it will be away from us more to the east and to the north but with the extreme freeze weve all week anything that falls likely will stick. Tuck is back with a first check of the forecast for us this morning. Now, did you do your homew my question earlier. Hang on, steve. Let me just double check see if i can get that for you. Yeah i do have an answer. You ready . Yup. Yeah, we dont have an an answer. I asked him what the coldest we know the coldest temperatures. Record low at dulles of 1 degree. I asked him what the coldest wind chill we ever felt in the dc area was. I want you to know my crack staff of mike thomas did look no this and we do not keep wind chill records. Thats the reason we dont have the answer. Interesting. Okay. So its not we didnt look for you. All right. Did you have an answer. It just wasnt theres no answer. Theres no answer. I think lowest i can remember is minus 15 a couple years ago back in 201314. Lets go to it. 20 now in washington. Were up to 20. Our overnight low was 14 we did said he set a record temperature record was set at Dulles Airport of the 1 degree and the cold spot this morning manassas was minus one. So very very cold temperatures. Once again to start were cautiously optimistic. We might hit 33 degrees today and at least one or two spots will get above the freezing mark for the first time in 2018. Storm system taking shape. I looking at video just a couple minutes ago of it snowing right now in tallahassee, florida. Thats extraordinary. This storm system winter storm all the way down into florida and georgia. Along the coastal communities of south carolina, North Carolina their winter storm warnings. Weve got Winter Weather advisories and winter storm warnings locally as well to our south and east. Southern maryland now under Winter Weather advisory and a winter storm warning were loolooking at the heavier snow s going to be late tonight and early tomorrow morning well get light snows across the area it will stick. So again with these very cold temperatures weve had so far this year, what falls will st stick. I would expect there will be some travel challenges tomorrow morning leave it at that and we might have to tweak the Snowfall Forecast a little bit either direction. There you go thats our early call. 24ou around here tomorrow morning. Again it will be light amounts but it will stick. 33 today. Plenty more details on the expected snow and the expected wind chills around here by friday and saturday coming up guys. Back to you. Thank you tucker. Deep freeze is causing issues as you know across the region especially for schools. So far weve told you about burst pipes, no heat, bus issues. Fox5s annie yu in fairfax this morning continuing our team coverage. Good morning to you. Hope youre trying to stay warm. Reporter im fine, mo. Its called layers. Im just worried about the students that had to be out here for a long time. You know, teenagers they dont dress as warmly as us old folks do. But needless to say, i mean it is very very cold out here. Were talking temps in the teens this early morning. The it feels a little better now with the sun out. But imagine there are still kids standing at bus stops waiting for their buses to get to them. You mentioned the heat not working. That was over in Montgomery County yesterday. Some heating issues at some schools including Richard Montgomery high were told that this morning there are no issues that they are doing just fine. Now here in Fairfax County the big issue was the buses and so buses like behind me here we sort of saw it all play out early this morning. These are the buses that have been sitting out much more across the bus lots in the county they were basically sitting out over the last two weeks during the winter break and so clearly with the frigid temperatures they didnt get any jump starts or any engines werent, you know, turned on over the last two weeks. So they just decided not to start some of them and some buses even broke down along the route. So that is the big issue here in Fairfax County it left hundreds of students waiting outside in the cold yesterday for up to an hour. This morning we can tell that you we already saw problems just after 5 00 oclock i want to show you the snapshot of delays in the county right now at 9 00 oclock. There are buses headed to the schools that either broke down or theyre experiencing pro problems. Most are delayed by either 15 to 20 minutes. You can see some are delayed by more than 30 minutes. Youve got belvedere elementary and franconia those three were just added to the list of these delays. This list is far fewer than yesterday, though, out of 808700 bus routes in the country work hundred were impacted yesterday. So this a much shorter list, but still youre talking about, you know, kids waiting for their buses outside in this cold temperature. We have a call into the School System to see what theyre doing to make sure they dont experience similar problem in the week, you know, tomorrow were talk something snow. And keep in mind, they do have just over 1600 buses in that are fleet. The second largest in the country. So perhaps they were able to swap some buses out but we did see mechanic out here this morning fixing problems as they arise. He was replacing batteries, and were told that maintenance crews are at different bus lots across the country as well to help out. Thats the very latest from falls church, annie yu, fox5 local news. Annie thank you very much. I know this doesnt make annie or anybody else feel better were not in it alone the rest of the cup tree also dealing with bitter cold parts of the northeast saw arctic blasts and snow and snow and sleet yesterday as many people were back on the roads after the new year holiday. Outside buffalo, which is snow central these days, heavy snow and whiteot conditions caused a massive pile up on i90. Dozens of cars and tractor trailers involved even more vehicles pushed off the road into the snow. Icy roads almost put a Dallas Area Police officer in the hospital. Look at this. Scary moment here just trying to get out of the way and going too slip right there. Oh. Wow. And somehow that car was able to just, just miss that officer. Officer responding to another accident at the time. Subzero temperatures in chicago push that city towards the longer snap in decades. Chunks of ice flowing down the partially frozen chicago river. The only thing they have to go by is what you tell them. They dont have a computer sitting in front of them. Getting that explicit information like we were getting that particular day, obviously testament to the call taker and the dispatchers. We got a onestory brick home. Richard riley was the first firefighter to arrive on lorraine drive in temple hills while neighbors watched helplessly as a son rushed back into the burning home to save his wheelchair bound mother. Inside the house. He tried to back door, i tried i kick the side door open just wish i can have got in there sooner. Feel so bad. Because i got grandparents. Adrenaline and the determination so safe lives is instinctive for first responder. They go in and then they bring her out and shes in the front yard. That was a big relief. And then ivory mined them there was a second victim. Copy two people trapped, correct . They went back in. They found him. They brought him out. I knew i did my job. But for these two women who took this tragic call last november, theres a part of the job thats always a question mark. What happens after the call e ends . I wouldnt were if they make made it. I knew they made it out of the house. I wouldnt if they made it at the hospital. I cant tell you how many i cried all the way home. The person calling 911 it could be the worse day of their life and we understand that and treat th the bad thing is we never ever get closure and thats a very very hard thing. These 911 call takers and dispatchers say these calls never get easier unlike the First Responders on the ground, they rarely know how the call ends and oftentimes they leave work wondering if the victims they helped made it to see another day. Unfortunately, in this fire the First Responders did everything they can but ultimately both the son and his mother died at the hospital.
