very cold temperatures for this time of year will continue right through the end of 2017 into the first couple of days of 2018 but today should feel and it should actual be a touch warmer than yesterday. forecasting daytime highs in the low to mid 30s. yesterday our daytime high was 25 degrees. 22 now in washington. so it is still cold. winds are light out of the south southwest at three. quick look at the satellite/radar. little cloud cover early weak little disturbance move through brought us cloud cover overnight we'll get that out of the here in the next few hours and turn partly sunny and a quiet afternoon for us afternoon. later tonight little clipper system will move in. that will bring us a chance for brief period of some snow showers or snow flurries or even light snow for parts of the area light tonight and early tomorrow morning and then round number two or three of some bitter, bitter cold air arriving of rice for the end of the weekend we'll look carefully how since 1964. in chicago, city officials have set up warming shelters for the homeless who are particularly vulnerable to hypothermia and frost bite and like tucker barnes just said more cold weather is deadliest residential fire in the city in decades. killing at least 12 people. four others still critically hurt this morning after flames through tour every floor of a five-story building. robert moses brings us the latest. >> reporter: police tell us at least four children including a one-year-old baby girl are among the dead here in this fir residential fire to hit the city in more than 25 years. >> it just look like hell coming out that amount. >> reporter: firefighters ra raced to 2363 pros spec avenue and arrived within three minutes of the first fire call just before 7:00 last night but even that quick response was not quick enough. >> people were on the fire escape already trying to get down on their own. that's how fast it was moving. >> reporter: the fire started on the first floor and quickly spread upstairs. the five-story walk up proved no match for the wind whipped flames. those inside like this man had almost no time to get out. >> i just woke up to bunch of smoke and that's it, man. whole building on fire. >> a witness showed us cell phone video of a firefighter working frantically to save one of the victims. the dead range in age from just one-year-old to over 50. >> this is the worst fire tragedy we have seen in this city century. >> in department that's certainly no stranger to tra tragedy, we're shock by this loss. >> reporter: at least 12 people were rescued. survivors and firefighters alike had to brave bone-chillingly cold weather. this is the worst fire in the city since the 1990 fire at the happy land social club in the bronx that killed 87. >> hold your families close and keep these families here in the bronx in your prayers. >> reporter: there's still no word on what caused this fire. the mayor says the sad reality is that the death toll which currently stands at 12 could still climb. in the bronx, robert moses, fox news. 9:07 is the time. police in the district are hard at work trying to identify a body found inside a burning car last night. viewer zen us this video you're about to see of the fire on ridge road in southeast. witnesses say they heard gunfire shortly before that blaze erupted. fox5's a and meow is following just moments ago along with forensics. the car has been removed as well. but they are still working to identify who this person is that was found inside the burning vehicle. they're also working to identify who is responsible for such a gruesome terrible crime and i want to get right to this video it really shows just intense and how, upping, up tense this fire was in this alleyway in between homes take look at that big flames coming out of this vehicle here. certainly leaving neighbors feeling unsettled and concerned because it's literally right either behind or in front of their homes. this is ridge road in g street southeast. inside that car, police found a body. it's not clear whether the person discovered inside the car was airmail man or woman. but neighbors tell thus they heard a blast of gunfire upwards of nine gunshots just after tec. then they heard a loud explosion before they saw flames engulfing the car. now the video with us says she was inside her home with her family when it happened. >> sound like big gunshots, four or five gunshots and then a big explosion. we all hit the floor for a moment. then my son ventured out and there was a car in the alley exploding. >> but it wasn't a car that they recognized from the neighbor. >> no? >> not at all. >> police believe that car is an older model lexus. they say it's charred and hollowed out. but again they are still working to identify who this person is that was found inside the vehicle as well as whose responsible. so they're asking for the public's help. that's the very latest here from include add link to a tweet or instagram post demonstrating a way that white person ruined that said topic. so the comment section on the article exploded almost immediately with both critics and supporters. some cueing the website and the writer of race baiting. others said of getting told you ruined mack and chose is the worst thing to a race consider yourself lucky. fox news commentator and former espn reporter britt mc henry also tweeted about the allegedly bigoted article saying "just imagine if headline read like this for any other ethnicity want the would be. chad dukes from 106.7 the fan echoed that sent many challenging the website to write similar list for any other race. so in response a buzz feed spokesperson told fox news that "it's important to distinguish entertainment new year's day. we're forecasting a high temperature 25 degrees. we got to go back last time we opened the new year with temperature that cold here in d.c. so any time you tack about temperatures 20 degrees below normal and it's january, i think you're talking about brutal cold so there you go. daytime highs again forecast to be very very cold around here for the day of first day of 2018. okay. talk about cold it's cold this morning 22 now in washington. still doing teens off to the west. 19 dulles. nasa a 19. leonardtown good morning you're 25 degrees. 23 in quantico. 23 in fredericksburg. everybody off to another very very cold start even, you know, it's winter time even here in washington these numbers are running a good and, ten, 15 degrees below normal for morning lows. cloud cover out there early. weak little disturbance off to our north. it has brought cloud cover overnight that actually held the temperatures up a little bit for parts of the area. we'll see the clouds get east of us and we'll turn partly sunny this afternoon. and then our next area of concern looking a little bit upstream here a little clipper clipper for a couple reasons. first it could bring us a brief period of snow late tonight early tomorrow morning f you're sup ex, seven, 8:00 o'clock tomorrow morning there might be snow showers. best chance will be dc north up to the pennsylvania border here for some light accumulations. we are looking at the potential for perhaps i'll show you the expected snow totals here in just a second what i want to mention in addition no light snow accumulations the cold air will get reinforced around here and it will be a very very cold end to the weekend. sunny, monday, tuesday, some of our defendant air yet. that's coming on the heels of some pretty cold days. there's future cast. that we are at 3am. notice we're getting light little burst of snow across the area. that threat will continue until 9:00, 10:00 o'clock in the morning. we'll get it out of here. not talking about lot of snow it's possible if you're up and got to go to work tomorrow morning or up early, there could be a dusting perhaps as you get north up 270 towards frederick more like a half inch or an inch of snow for a few locations here to the north. so again we're not talking about lo little bit to cause some slippery roads just remember that for tomorrow morning and then the cold comes rushing in look at sunday, monday, tuesday. daytime highs in the 20s overnight lows back in the teens. i think we'll do a lot of single digits around here by new year's morning and by the first couple days there of new year's of 2018 we'll have some very very cold temperatures to contend with and if you are curious these temperatures 20 degrees below normal. no big storms on the seven day. few snow showers tomorrow morning keep it cold and dry. very dry around here for the month of december. so honestly could use a little precip not in that seven day forecast. all right. i've got like february thing where we tend to hit like those ten, 15 degrees marks? >> well, i mean, we never average ten or 15 degrees marks. our coldest time of the year is typically like the second half of january. because it's little bit of a l lag. this particular cold has gotten here little bit early but it is wintertime. we can sometimes see he can treatment cold or snow events this time of year. so it's not that unusual. but both the duration and some of the temperatures we're expecting over the next couple of days you know are going to be flirting with records. we did do day heim highs. so certainly potential here we'll be talking about record books, steve. >> all right. >> record is a record. record is a record, that's right. let's get to it want to show you the maps and we'll start with new year's day forecast. forecasting a high temperature of 25 on monday. that would be the coldest start to a new year since all the way back in 1940. so unless you're at least 78 years of age, i guarantee you will not remember a january 1st that started that cold and again we're forecasting highs that will give you a sense how cold it's going to be highs of on monday at 25. that's the current temp here at 10am. 25 in quantico. doing teens in frederick 18 degrees. 15 in hagerstown. very very out there. 27 leonardtown. today will actually be the warmest in the next five to seven days. so we are thinking we'll get it a little above 32 later this afternoon it won't be a warm day but compared to yesterday it should feel a little better then we'll focus on this little clipper in here tonight. clipper is likely to bring us a light period of snow or some snow flurries or snow showers early tomorrow morning and there are some indications that there could be some light accumulations so just throw it out there by light accumulations we mean quarter of an inch of snow maybe enough to cover the ground. there we are at 4am. i wouldn't be overly concerned about if you got to get up early tomorrow morning you might encounter slippery roadways north of up to then the cold rush is back in and talk about these temperatures and it is going to be really really cold around here. quick look at our expected snow accumulations dusting to an inch and again i think the heaviest amounts will be as you get up into the southern pennsylvania northern maryland southern pennsylvania. there's your extreme cold. cold rushes in behind that clipper tomorrow. 26 your day heim high on sunday. wind chills sunday night early monday. zero or there bows and then monday's daytime high 25. tuesday stays cold as well we'll keep the cold party going right into 2018. that was my last forec 2017. >> how did it feel? [ laughter ] >> cut to commercial and we'll get the story. >> thank you. >> let's shake the table, >> ♪ before we close the book on 2017, we have a take on a look back at the year that was in the fox beat. like we told you last hour it wasn't the strongest year at the box office but there were still ten stand outs and kevin mccarthy's mind and this morning he's sharing his top five. check it out. hey everybody it's kevin mccarthy i'm sorry i'm not in studio with you think morning but i wanted to leave you my top five films of 2017. i tweeted out my top ten list at kevin mccarty tv on twitter. number ten, definitely good t time. number nine mother. number eight, baby driver. number seven, wonder woman. and number six the big sick. all right. five to one. number five, james man gold's logan r rated wolverine film features my favorite performance ever from hugh jackman the film doesn't a brilliant job of trance zenning the super her row genre. eighths film featuring comic book character the film still plays more like a western than super hero in many. you can say the same thing for night while it was a batman movie it played like a crime drama. i loved logan cinema to have gravy. this is number five this year. >> next up the shape of water. master physical directed and featuring one of the best ensembles i've seen in film in years. the film takes place in the baltimore area in the 1960s and tells the story of a woman who paul's in love with a sea creature. now i know that sounds crazy but ironically it's one of the most grounded and best films of the year. cast members are incredible especially doug jones who plays the sea creature. his make up affects are 90% practical prosthetics and a beautiful film with a crate story score and performances. coming number three on my top 52017 is blade runner 2049 the film maker has yet to make a bad film. prisoner, is a car ya, rifle, enemy, and now the incredible continuati o the '80s. continuation stars ryan gosling and also brings back rick deckert played by harrison ford. roger deacon's cinema to gravy is the leading star in this movie in my opinion. of shot is a beautiful work of art and i love that the score are leading characters. the film grabs you and doesn't let go. i feel it is a better film than the original. a true modern masterpiece. coming at number two get out. this film blew me away. when the film blows you away the first time you watch it and it gets better even better than the first time which i love. the flam nam features brilliant performances. what i love about this film rewatching it and finding all the details and of single shot. the film plays as a social thriller and stands as an important piece of sin in ma that people are going to look back on and study for decades to again so you can fully appreciate the genius of what jordan peel accomplish here. finally, number one, christopher nolan's dunkirk. i saw this film eight times. six times in theaters. the 70-millimeter i max experience is one of the greatest or the greatest cinematic experience i've ever had in theater. the film is told in three timeline structure divided by lie land, sea and air and tells the incredible true story of the 400,000 soldiers trapped at the beaches of dunkirk and the civilian boats and pleasure yachts that helped to create a miracle changing the course of world war ii. brilliantly shot using hans zimmer score as leading character in the film. watch this film on the biggest screen as possible. almost three fourths of the movie was shot with i max film film cameras those are my top 25 films of 2017. i know steve loved dunkirk. send me your see us a the kevin mccarthy tv on twitter. i'm kevin mccarthy, fox5 local news. they have thank you very much. wale still hanging out with us. >> we asked for your favorite movies 2017. #gooddaydc. >> do you have a favorite movie 2017. >> get out it's not a comedy. >> that's right. it's not a comedy. >> even though they put it in category. it's a horror movie an documentary. >> wale everybody. our new co-anchor. so we have much more to come on good day dc. we've got a fashion show because when you stepping into the new year, right you got to do it b big. look fabulous from head to toe. make sure you ring in the new year in style. we'll show you how coming up. might as well stick around for the champagne. >> taste test with us. >> you guys appropriating my -- as signing my advice. >> it's end of the year. >> i don't know if i can partake. >> just indulge one last time.
