local news. fox 5 learned hundreds of warrants for wanted you futures are not being served because of a manpower shortage >> squads are getting the personnel they need because courthouse and prisoner security top priority. paul wagner live in northwest with the story. >> reporter: jim and marina, here in the district of columbia on any given day, law enforcement officers are out here on these streets, looking for fugitives. it's a standard part of police work. what we've learned in the last few days is that at the federal courthouse, the us marshal service has a warrant squad and they've had a very difficult time staffing that warrant squad. on any given day, there's no one coming outlooking for wanted fugitives. we got a statement from the chief marshal. we want to show you part. the 600 active federal parole warrants and 300 class one warrants, meaning fugitives for which the us marshal service has primary apprehension responsibility. we're working hard to mitigate threats to the public by maximizing the resources and with effective collaboration with various law enforcement partners. i'll show you videos the marshalls at work we've recorded. us marshals are responsible here in washington for security at ten federal courthouses as well as protects judge, juries and witnesses. according to jason wood lowe with the chapter of the federal manager of association, he told me that staffing here in washington is taking a priority over staffing of field office it's around the country. at the federal beyond a reasonable doubt in the district providing security in the courtroom for judges and prisoners is taking priority over staffing the warrant squads that look for the fugitives. the judges want to see in their courtrooms, on any given federal courthouse that no deputy marshalls are outlooking for fugitives some of the outstanding warrants are coming from the dea, the fbi and of course the federal judges. the marshall service is responsible for providing security for the permissible counsel's office, as well as the deputy attorney general. now, one thing we have been able to confirm is that there was a shooting last saturday of a three-year-old at the apartment house on pomeroy road. we understand a man wanted for a gun charge in that case was actually wanted on one of these fugitive warrants out of the federal courthouse. he was wanted for escape. it's unclear exactly how old the warrant is but we can tell you that that man was arrested yesterday and he's now in custody. we're live in northwest, paul wagner, fox 5 local news. there's new video from that armored truck robbery in beltville last friday a bank of america on baltimore avenue and police help this video will help track down the suspects. this is surveillance video that shows two employees depositing money into the atm when two armored suspects approached them from behind, forced them to the ground and then took off with cash. police say the masked men made off with more than $200,000, so far, there have been no arrests in the case. at police in new hampshire to make an arrest at a at a deadly stabbing that happened in alexandria. this is taylor accused. robbing and stabbing mere the meadow woods apartments earlier. they got a tip he was in new england and found him at an apartment complex in hudson new hampshire. now held on $500,000 bond. in fairfax county, more pregnant women are reportedly battling heroin and opioid addiction and apparently not getting the help because afraid >> it comes as opioid use sky rockets across country. tisha lewis here with that were concerned about this and the fear for many pregnant women fighting assistance abuse disorders is being viewed as a bad mother. now, the statistics are staggering in fairfax county is no exception. the latest numbers from the centers for december controls, between 1999 and 2015 there was nearly to 500% increase in prescription overdose deaths among women compared to a 218% increase among men. heroin deaths among women report oddly increased twice as quickly compared to men. now, one group is hoping to change that. >> we absolutely want to offer put pregnant women nonjudge tall services. >> she's the behavioral health supervisor. she said there's no judgment, no questions asked policy for pregnant women seeking help with card priority population and community services in fairfax county will bump them to the top of the list for assessment, treatment and medication. in fact, we're told if a pregnant woman addicted to heroin or opioid contacts the board, they will get help within 48 hours. >> i think women are afraid of judgment, that they feel that they're not services that can help them. maybe they don't know we offer services for women currently using substances. that there's a big stigma against a woman who's pregnant sent using drugs, and we want to remove that stigma and say we're here to help you anyway. >> reporter: also offers opioid overdose reverse sal a training. the one-hour training teaches how to administer and is free and open to the public. it's reportedly the leading cause of accidental death the country. tisha lewis fox 5 local overnight. tomorrow is the first day of winter and it will be feeling a lab more like a typical december winter day here in dc. for this evening, 7:00 temperature right about 45 degrees, partly cloudy skies, they will get thinner and thinner. 9:00 temperature 43, and by 11:00, 41 but again, we are going to be seeing temperatures likely heading for the upper 20's to low 30's, it will be a chilly start at the bus stop tomorrow. winter begins tomorrow, it is the solstice at 11:29 in the morning, then we'll see days getting longer. but the cold will make a come back. high pressure up to the north is going to continues to drive those north winds in and that means while we see, what should the kids be ready for at the bus stop as they finish up school for probably the holiday week? 30 to bus crash in mexico >> reports about a virginia family who may have been killed in that bus crash while on vacation. a plane crashes in the front yard of a home and everyone makes it out safely. where this happened and what people saw moments before the plane crashed. a heart of gold. a mysterious donor drops an unusual donation inside a salvation army kettle. >> my name is tech sergeant, stationed in anderson air force base guam. i'd like to make a shout out to my happy holidays and merry christmas. z2i1zz z16fz y2i1zy y16fy . a bus full of royal caribbean cruise ship passengers crashed killing 12 people. eight americans. . florida reporting some victims may be members of a family from virginia. officials say the bus was driving for about 40 minutes before it flipped over on a narrow highway. no word on what caused the crash. meantime federal investigator it's digging for clues trying to figure out what led to the deadly amtrak train derailment. investigators are looking into whether the engineer operating the train was distracted. on top of the fact the train was going more than twice the speed limit t per hour zone. as a result. three people killed and dozens others left injured. in knoxville, tennessee, three men are alive after a plane they were in crashed into a front yard of a home. tuesday afternoon and landed on top of a car parked in a driveway. the men made it out, conscious and alert when emergency responders got there. >> i heard a airplane, it was low, i knew that it was going the wrong way to be that low. i told my partner, i said, in plane is too low, it's going to crash. >> it sounded like a bomb, so but i knew he had wrecked because i heard the noise. >> no word why the plane went down in the first place. implosion failed last month, the georgia ♪. ♪ ♪. on 5:30, homicide detectives canvassing a neighborhood in upper marlboro for clues in connection with a deadly shooting. someone shot 53-year-old kermit holland last pry in the garage of his home. investigators still looking for the gunman and detectives are also looking to find the victim's stolen suv. it is a maryland tags. police need help identifying two suspects wanted in connection with a robbery in northwest. this happened tuesday after 5:30 in the evening on the 2600 block of woodly place, police say the suspects and the victim had agreed on line to meet to sell a pair of shoes. instead, police say one of the suspects tried to steal the shoes and one away. when the victim tried to get the shoes back the suspect assaulted is the victim. a man in southeast is looking for his dog after he was stolen from his own yard. this is bisquit. the theft happened today in the 700 block of 32nd street. surveillance video shows someone walking up to the yard, opening the gate and letting the dog o out. on the heels of the tax package. >> why would people want to pay their taxes early? trying to avoid the loss of early. fitz this is not a place -- you don't expect this to be busy this time of year. >> reporter: it is like santa's workshop in there. we can tell you. a busy, busy day. here's why. the theory is, that people will come down, pay their property taxes before new year's eve, and then avoid the loss of that property tax deduction, which is now part of the new tax reform package. a lot of people are looking into this. they have 20 people prepay their property taxes yesterday. doubled that today. 40 people. arlington county have field more than 200 calls just this week alone. and the deputy treasure in arlington says, they don't expect this to ease up any time soon. >> it's usually very slow. and as you noticed there's quite a few on average, two, three, taxpayers like to come in and prepay but we're seeing many more this year. >>reporter: now, when this new tax plan goes into effect, property tax deductions for local and state deductions are going to be capped at buy $10,000. here's what people are doing. they're coming down to tax offices like this one and they're prepaying all of this for 2018. now, the folks here say legally, these county and local offices cannot offer you any legal advice, that this is going to work. but you talk to the taxpayers who came down here today to pay these taxes in advance of these changes on january 1st and they will say, that they have the means to do it. they're going to do it. because the worker worse that can happen, they would get a jump on paying their taxes for next year. >> the worst thing that can happen is i paid it in advance and we only have to pay it next year. best thing that can happen is file next year. >> reporter: that is the idea. we heard from montgomery county today, we also heard from dc late tonight. both jurisdictions say they are taking steps to help people repay these clear message. for families facing economic challenges another lawmaker's future is on the line. sooner day lynn leakage is taking a break from his campaign amid accusations of inappropriately touching women. tom wolf called for his resignation but so far he has not stepped down speaking of drop, hundreds of baggage handlers went on strike. it involves contract workers protesting what they say poor working conditions, mistreatment and poor pay. demanding the right to unionize. >> we want to be represented so we can have a voice on the job. and that's the right of this country and this company has not been willing to listen to them. that's why we're going on strike today. >> the contract in dulles airport workers plan to walk off the job again tomorrow, there are some airport workers who have decided not to join the protest. and delta wants money back. the airline is seeking to be repaid for lost revenue following sunday's power outage at heart field jackson international airport in atlanta. they're saying the airline may have lost 25 to $50 million because of the he plans to hold talks with both the airport and george power. the outage caused delta to cancel roughly 1400 flights. tsa expecting 400,000 additional passengers going through security checkpoints every day across the country. we were at dulles earlier, gives you a little sense what they were up against. a tsa in addition to 1400 officers at the top 50 airports and the tsa wants to remind people flying of one new rerestriction this year. >> any large electronics, personal devices larger than would be mild, definitely not the case. it will be colder with a chance of a few snow showers. friday travel this is what it looks like country-wide. you got the pockets of snow showers along the upper great lakes and the northwest, sunny and dry in the southwest. you got the swarth of rain along a cold front stretching from texas all the way up into portions of new england where it could be cold enough for snow and ice, so treater maine, new york, new hampshire and vermont could see winter i weather. showers will be more of a thing through pittsburgh the ohio valley back into tennessee, showers don't reach us till saturday. friday, looks good on the road. in fact, up to new york, 50, cloudy skies, chicago, they're in the middle of that, they will have a bit of a wintery mix and 65 in la, miami, marina looks good this time of year. sunny and 81. yes, i want to spend christmas in miami. my gosh, no problems there. 46 outside temperatures have cooled off a bit from the low 50's of earlier we're seeing mainly mid to upper 40's. we had a system all day towards the south that spread showers from tennessee into portions of the carolinas. you can see a good bit of rain across places like charles norfolk virginia. stay far enough south we had clouds but even the clearing line made it past the district. mostly cloudy skies definitely colder as we spent most of the overnight flirting between the 40's and 50's, but 34 much closer to normal for tonight. chilly start to thursday as that cold air make as brief come back. we'll start to warm things up again on friday. temperatures in the 40's, but with a lot of the sunshine, it is going to be pretty nice of let's get straight to that accu-weather seven-day forecast. 46 tomorrow but watch out temperatures jump warmer area on friday. mostly a cloudy one, few peaks of sunshine, dry during the day. showers look likely on saturday. for some of you it may take all day to see mild back into the 60's we go. little full-on fire truck, all of your police cars and motorcycles and everybody and this was a big surprise, wasn't it sdwrauk a surprise. they didn't expect anything, it was a great surprise for them. florida, a call for an overdose quickly turned into a life or death struggle and the incident all captured on camera >> the officer seen on surveillance camera getting dragged for miles by the driver who took off during a traffic stop. he was checking on the driver who had and fall asleep. the man woke up and drags the officer along. >> the officer dragged half mile while clinging to the car hitting speeds of 60 miles an hour. the officer's body camera recorded the whole thing. >> you can only imagine being dragged for half mile, and on that you would sustain not just to your clothing but body. >> the officers rushed to the aid. he was hitting speeds of 100 miles an hour. the driver was eventually stopped charged with attempted murder. the suffered road rash over much of his body but him. several drivers caught up to alert the driver and it worked. the truck pulled over, spotted the rider on the back and he took off running, police reportedly took to her from there. a major
