>> reporter: good morning, once again, guys. it looks like things are getting a little better this morning. but it really just depends on each individual case. many travelers we talked to said they're very frustrated and disappointed not able to get through online or on the phone with delta. delta seems to be bearing the brunt of this because atlanta is their husband. and so there are more than thee hundred delta flights canceled today and a handful of them here out of reagan national. but the problem was a lot of people showed up here to the airport this morning after being rebooked yesterday only to find they had yet another flight canceled. so really tough going for some people, and it all because of this power outage yesterday. the entire airport was plunged into darkness. it was an underground electrical fire in the tunnels and that knocked out not only the main power but the backup power as well. then there were toxic fumes and that's what kept power crews from being able to access the te and passengers were stranded the terminals and on the tar tarmacs. as we mention, atlanta's airport is the busiest in the country. busiest in the world in fact. 1800 nights canceled yesterday and delta really bearing the brunt of most of those disruptions. back out live here now we talk to lot of people this morning who were trying to just figure out how they can get home including one couple who told us they had a family trip in atlanta yesterday. they were trying to get back and talked to us about what that was like in the atlanta airport yesterday. >> we walk in, and everything is black. you know, the escalator is done and you couldn't see anything. it was like dark. no lights. >> had to carry our bags up to the second floor. >> and we sat there for, um, four hours. >> we got there at about quarter to 2:00. >> 4:00 o'clock flight. >> for a 4:00 o'clock flight and knowing everything was dark, we were just sitting and waiting anticipating the lights to go on on. >> reporter: so how did they get back here to reagan national airport? well they rent add 12 passenger van with the rest of their family and took a 14 hour drive to get back here to reagan national airport. the rest of the family with the young children they live in the fort belvoir area they were able to just drive home but the grandparents there now they're waiting to try to get a flight back home to connecticut. we're wishing them and all those passengers who get held up in this good luck and good luck with their travels. delta saying it's waving one-dame change fee for passengers through the 19th that's tomorrow but we did hear from one family that they weren't able to get on a flight to atlanta until thursday. so they, too, decided they were just going to drive it and take their chances. live at reagan national, melanie alnwick, fox5 local news. >> melanie, 12 passenger van with your family the holidays, that's like a bad movie. it was the worse you get stuck at a cheap oh hotel and it was awful. i got there 1:00 o'clock on christmas day. never again will i travel on christmas -- any holidays. merry christmas to me. >> all right. 9:07 is the time right now. let's go to virginia now. where contracted service workers at dulles international airport are expected to go on strike. this move comes at the peak of the holiday season as employees are demanding a fare recognition process. that allows workers to exercise their legal right to join a union. beginning at 2:00 p.m., workers and supporters will gather for a large rally to announce the strike vote >> ♪ tragic story out of brooklyn new york breaking overnight. tragedy there. four people are dead after a fire tour through a home in brooklyn. we're told a mother and three children were killed in this fire. all of them are on the second floor a father and two teenagers they are alive but they're in critical condition. two other boys were hurt but they're expected to survive. it's still unclear at this time how this fire started. what is clear this is a tragedy. >> absolutely this was row ho house? turned into a nightmare sadly though for hundreds on board a royal caribbean cruise ship more than thee hundred people got sick with a stomach bug just two days into the cruise. people started suffering from norovirus symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea. the cruise line says people affected were treated with over the counter medication provided by the ship's doctors. passengers claim the number of cases overwhelmed the medical staff. the ship returned to port everglades in florida this weekend after a five-day cruise. to the latest now not massive thomas fire in southern california. nearly 8,000 firefighters have been deployed as it continues to threaten homes. 18,000 homes to be exact. crews say the return of powerful winds could raise the fire risk right now the fire is 40% contained. but crews say the containment isn't expected full containment until january and even in the fire will probably burn through the new year. the tsa testing new technology to help detect are currently being tested in la but senator chuck schumer of new york is push the agency to test them nationally. standoff explosive detection units do a full body screening of passengers as they walk without slowing them down. if an explosive device is detected it will trigger an alarm. finally, okay, no surprise here. the new star wars movie the last jedi won the weekend box office. the latest installment in the franchise earned $220 million here in the us. it is the second largest opening ever behind predecessor the force awakens and if you add in its overseas take, the new star wars film made nearly half a billion dollars worldwide. it's the force. it continues. >> weep making movies. keep on going. >> yes. >> thank you allison. 9:23 is the time. new this morning, prince george's county public school safety officials putting on their red happens caps to bring cheer to those in need. >> hosting christmas food basket program this morning. bob barnard is there. he's live in springdale maryland. what's going on, bob. >> reporter: hey holly they're going to distribute 2500 food baskets over the next couple of weeks. 100 today from this firehouse stationed 806 on st. joseph's and springdale. hun dressed them going to the emerson house which is senior center in bladensburg. and 100 to riverdale elementary school. so this is going to totally help out people in featured we're told the seniors over at emerson house are all gathered in the lobby waiting for these baskets to arrive. and it's basically, you know, good for a couple of meals it would seem, and joining us to talk about this is chief ben barks stop fire chief in prince george's county. chief, 33rd years you guys are doing this here. tell me where this is going. the kind of people who are going to be helped out. >> yeah, today we're filling the boxes for senior home over emerson place, and as you said about a christmas meal with all the trimmings, the poultry, the bread, the vegetables, the fruit. everything that they need to prepare a christmas dinner. and this is all, you know, public safety assistance program all the public safety agencies here in the county involved in making this happen. >> they're still doing introductions thanking your corporate partners. you've got firefighters and police officers who are going to deliver this with santa leading the way. lights and sirens. these are folks and families at the elementary school that otherwise might be without in sense, right? >> right these are people in need that need a little assistance, and this is great for public safety to be able to provider this assistance to make this holiday season joyous and take some of that stress off not worrying about where their meal is going to come from that we're going to be able to provide that. it makes us feel good and making that happen. >> absolutely. some of it is northerner perishable. others vegetables and like you nt turkeys here. it's just a nice program that the 200 families will be served here from this firehouse today. but you have firehouses all over the county that are going similar things, right? >> it's very different from a dumb bell with starting with unique shape. as you can see, it's like just cannonball with handle on it. >> um-hmm. >> the bell the way it's shaped is obviously offset with as opposed to dumb bell it has two waits on each side so it's more balanced so this the gravity pulls each time y kettle bell move. >> it makes the more chall challenging. >> much harder is exa exactly. >> today first we want to create a plan with the holidays being around the corner. christmas is next week. >> right. >> one woke from today. >> literal until one week. >> yeah. >> what you want to do is create plan and just kind of hold yourself accountable and not fall off on the deep end. first things first i would start with like just before each meal, drink a glass of water to curb your appetite. that will promote, you know, just over eating of the day. >> sure. >> also make it a family affair when your family is in town after dinner, go grab the kids, grab the dogs, grab the cats go for a walk in the neighborhood. or even go to local and see the christmas lights. it gives i was way to bond with your family members and move. >> and move, that's right. that's the objective is not sitting on the couch. moving all day. >> also, if you want to just, you know, a week before your family is in town, call did you say cousin tommy, hey, we'll work out three times, 30 minutes before the family wakes up. bring your gym gear. >> oh okay. >> holds you accountable and also again another way of bonding with your family member. >> okay. >> and with that, stacey ooh here to show us a quick 30 minute circuit we can do at home without the gym because at most times gyms are closed during the holidays. >> right. a, it's closed. b, toots cold. so you can do this at the comfort of your own home that's one of the big benefits to doing a quick training session. >> we'll start with our first workout. and it's called a russian kettle bell swing. she'll start with hiking the bell back to where her wrists hit her and her thigh and bringing that bell shoulder width high. she's keeping a nice neutral spine. all momentum based as long as she comes up fast that weight regardless how heavy the weight is comes up super fast. >> is there any risk of hurting your back. >> there is which i think is why you should either reach out to fitness professional before doing anything or look at a solid youtube video and again this is more of a cardio bruised move full body, she's working her grip strength at the same time. >> okay. >> so >> right. >> now she'll put her bell down and this is more avenue compound move. we'll go into a squat with a high pull combination. she's going to lower herself down, pull up fast and bring the you will bows up high. again keeping that neutral spine and this is more avenue compound full body grind movement so it's working her lower body her shoulders to get nice and defined. her core. and again, she's replying all the benefits with these two moves you probably want to begin with three sets of ten for beginners and maybe inter intermediates four sets of ten. just to kind of give you more cycle. >> right. our last exercise we have a russian twist. she's going to lower herself down. all right. with niece slightly bent grabbing the belt at chest hell end rotating throughout the torso. she'll go to the left gone to the right keeping a nice neutral spine no rounding in the back nice and easy not forced slow control tempo again another three sets of ten and all thee exercises you repeat them continuously will run a solid 20 to 30 minutes. you're not out in the cold. even if the gym is closed, you still have access to go to your basement. >> how much will kettle cost you. >> roughly if you go to big box store they run between a dollar 50, two dollars per pound. >> oh, okay. >> stacey is work wig 8 kilograms roughly about 17 pounds and women usually begin with 15, 20 pounds, men 25, 30 pounds just depending on where you're at fitness wise. >> right. two questions. one, can i higher her to work out for me at christmas?
