in sight >> a maryland girl wins big in a nationwide cooking contest. the news at 10:00 starts now. and we begin tonight with the winter weather across much of the dc region. >> it really was beautiful. most of us got to see it come down several hours, let's take a live look outside now at this hour, the snow it has stopped for the most part >> the concern tonight is the possibility of slippery roads, especially ramps bridges and overpasses. what can we expect when it comes to sunday? we want check in with gwen >> it is really going to be a windy day on sunday. but as matt mentioned most of the snow for the most part is out of our area. take a look at radar, you can see it's moving all the way up to the northeast as that low pressure system pulls away, and we are just really on the very back end of it now. areas across delmarva. and finally, get a break for everyone. but a couple of winter weather advisories for areas to the west, grant, that until 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, as far as the east is concerned we still have winter weather advisories until 10:00 tonight. as we take a look where we stand, temperatures to be concerned with, right now, into the upper 20's and low 30's but we'll see bitter cold air moving in the arctic air mass will invade the midatlantic a windchills as well. more details on that in the seven-day forecast just ahead. lauren? >> thank you. parts of the south also dealing with old man winter this weekend. snow fell in louisiana, georgia, texas, south carolina, mississippi and alabama. the storm forced cancelation of hundreds of flights in atlanta stranding many passengers at the city's busy airports. tonight we're learning more about the selfless actions of a maryland law enforcement officer killed as he was helping another officer who crashed last night along 270 in rockville. both men died after another car crashed into them. evan lambert is live outside the fire department where deputy chief sander cohen volunteered for more than a decade. evan? >> reporter: you can see that the flag is at half staff here at the fire station. where deputy volunteered. there's bunt above the sign signifying the terrible loss his colleagues are feeling. on a cold night, colleagues of deputy cheer fire marshal sander cohen share a warm embrace, moments before, fire trucks and maryland state police cruiser accompanied cohen's body to a rockville funeral home >> he stopped helped someone in need and now joined the ranks of maryland's fallen heros. >> reporter: cohen stopped to help a driver of an suv. he put his personal car behind the suv, and turned on his flashers. >> he told he would be safeguarding the scene. and would be out with the driver. the investigation indicates the deputy chief cohen and the driver of the suv then moved to the shoulder of the fast they were standing there when a southbound vehicle swerved on to the shoulder struck both of them. >> cone didn't know it when he stopped but he was helping 36-year-old carlos wolf a supervisory agent with the fbi both cohen and wolf died from the injuries. cohen had been with the fire marshal's office nine years. he was also a volunteer firefighter at rockville station three. wolf was an 11-year veteran of the fbi, assigned to the national office. >> this is his locker. >> at the volunteer fire station, some of cohen's colleagues were dispatched to try and save their injured brother. bunting is draped over his gear, his colleagues say his natural role as a helper could not have been demonstrate aid clearer than by his selfless actions friday. >> he saw somebody that needed help. he put himself in harm's way. and in the end, the lord took him. tonight, maryland ste of crashes. they do not believe alcohol was broke out around 10:00 on dillon court. witnesses began knocking on doors and helping get the people inside to safety. when firefighters arrived, they found the townhomes fully engulfed. the fair was so intense, a second alarm was sounded. no one was hurt. the fire caused about $200,000 in damage and it did force dozen residents including two children in the three damaged townhomes to find another police have arrested a maryland man in connection with deadly shooting in northwest. officers responded to the 6900 block of georgia avenue around 8:00 yesterday morning, there, they found a man who had been shot several times. the victim has been identified as 45-year-old brian gibson of northwest. he was pronounced at the scene. 59-year-old kuntz wright of silver springs charged with second degree murder violent protests continue over president trump's decision to move u.s. embassy to president said he will not meet with mike pence during his visit to the region next week. david lee 10 overdoses resulting in six deaths in the last seven days. from all corners of the county. investigators believe a deadly batch of heroin laced with fentanyl or car fentanyl to to blame. these are synthetic opioids that are lethal, even in the smallest doses. >> you have the chemists around the world playing with chemicals, molecules trying to beat the justice system so they can bring a drug into the united states that's not illegal but still has the powerful kick of heroin or morphine. so again, it's the people that guinea pigs cox said he's extremely worried about the safety of his officers and the fire department. who are thes first responders on the scene of an overdose. back in ox, a fairfax county police officer was hospitalized after coming into account with heroin while responding to an overdose call in mclean. >> if you have a citizen that sees something like this and goes to person's potentially coming into contact with an illegal drug that could possibly be on somebody's body. so it's not just a problem for the people that are using or the families. it's an epidemic that can affect everybody. >> reporter: because it's so dangerous they're making changes here at the police and fire departments, officers are now no longer allowed to field test drugs on the street and it's recommend they wear nitro gloves as they're finding out latex does not protect against these drugs, in fairfax county. angelie hemphill fox 5 local news. now to the district, where residents of a home in southeast got quite a shock this afternoon, look at this. a driver crashed into their house on 15th place. we're told the impact of the crash was so severe it sheared off the home's gas meter. fortunately, no one inside was hurt. inspectors are now checking out the home for structral damage. police are investigating what happened, no word whether the driver will be charged. >> can you the home when that happens. also in the district, police want to identify this person, caught on home video, stealing a package from the front porch, you see this a lot this time of year. it happened in the 5400 block of 8th street, that is in northwest. if you recognize this person in the video, there's one more look, you are asked to call dc police. >> seems like we had a couple of those every week >> with christmas coming so many getting deliveries we'll probably see more in the joinings as volunteers gear up for this big day, dan, will you first tell us a little bit about it? give us a little background it started in 1992, we had 5,000 wreaths left over, coming to arlington as a child and took the 5,000 wreaths and brought them down him and his family, it was the family's gift to the cemetery and he did that for ten, 12 years and one year they got a picture of it with the snow and it went viral and they started a nonprofit so they could take money and get them trying to cover every grave >> it is a touching site to see the wreaths out there. this is obviously a pretty big and how many graves do you actually cover >> we're looking for 246,700 wreaths this year. >> and where do the wreaths come from >> maine. >> they will be here, >> 65 tractor-trailers loads of them >> the issue, especially last year, i remember talking with you about the bad weather. it was icy conditions. worried about people signing up >> it was awful. we had 47,000 people show up even in the ice storm and we were finished in two hours. >> so well you put the call out and people answered it. is that what you're looking to do again >> we also have new policies, the cemeteries isn't opening until 8:30, the front will only at 7:00. we bring a tractor-trailer from maine they start tomorrow. and stop all the way down and stop at churches and schools and things like that to teach, and i have family buried there friends and we have a lot of mothers who come up with us and this year i have three i'm hosting that will be the first time there, husbands passed away in a helicopter crash in july. so we'll be the first time here and the stories you hear from the people. the thankful ness, a lot of people haven't had families there. we started 153 years ago there, we say their names. they say you died twice, once when your body dies and once when you stop saying their names. >> you say the name as you're laying the wreaths >> yes. >> so hopefully you'll have plenty of maryland and virginia also our first snow of the season today, someone who was certainly enjoying the. mijan, the national zoo tweeted these images of her rolling down the hill in the snow this morning and zoo said giant pandas are most active in the winter. this is making gwen happy. >> we know gwen is the biggest panda fan around. what do you think about that? >> i didn't know that was coming. >> are you going to be able to make it through >> that is so cute. makes me wish i had been at the zoo. i got updated snow totals and i'll tell you exactly what they got at the zoo in the meantime, that snow was finally moving out low pressure system heading to the northeast and pulling all of that with it. new england getting battered and on back side we'll see pretty cold air moving in, and we do have a frontal system that's going to be heading through. right now as you can see, it's even clearing delmarva nicely a little bit there. but other than that we're finally getting a break. we still have a couple of advisories to speak about. now, primarily for areas to our west, winter weather advisory grant mineral within that until 9:00 tomorrow morning, then the eastern edge of delmarva there, they still have a winter weather advisory and a winter restorm warning, some of that ending at 10:00. others until about 9:00 tomorrow morning, temperatures this is the big story, temperatures in the winds right now, 33 in the district. elsewhere, we're talking temperatures pretty much into the mid 20's, low 30's. we've got cold arctic air settling in. the snow continuing to move out, we've got icy conditions tonight into early sunday that i'm concer areas that are wet untreated surfaces. arctic air mass that's moving in. windchills tomorrow for sunday and gusty winds pushing in about 30 miles an hour. that arctic air mass invading the midatlantic, we'll see pretty cold conditions tomorrow make sure you bundle up if you're heading out anywhere. and the slick conditions and knows spots, really could be a big factor if you're going to be driving anywhere tomorrow, do be careful. updated snow totals just came in from national weather service, pretty impressive numbers here. st. mary count 5 inches, dulles four, ashburn 4.5, the national zoo 2.4 inches for the panda, demascus over five inches and montgomery village four inches of snowfall. we did get our fair share today. sunshine tomorrow, don't be fooled, it will be cold. 37 degrees by midday with those gusty winds, windchills are going to make it feel like it's a lot colder than that 28, your overnight low and tomorrow a high of 39 degrees. feeling like it's only in the 20's. here's your fox 5 accu-weather seven-day forecast. lots of sunshine pretty much however, another little piece of we had about will a 30 to 40% .- chance of maybe monday night of seeing a little bit of snow or some freezing rain. so that's something we'll have to watch very cold, however, once we get to about see those snowflakes last night. fox 5 tisha lewis talked to residents to see what they think of all the winter weather >> southern maryland felt the brunt of the first snowfall, several nichls in st. mary it started last night and continued most of the day >> i wish it would stick so i oh we only have to go to work. but it's due coming, so, i mean, need more. >> it was exciting to come back down here and see snow again. are you ready for all of this. >> yes. i love snow. i'm from pennsylvania, so i absolutely love snow. this is very exciting. >> in hollywood, maryland, snow blanketed most of the area as residents navigated the roadways, started friday and continued through saturday at least three inches of snowfall came down in the area by saturday afternoon, most residents say it was business as usual and gave high marks to the department of transportation for pretreating the roadways. most of the preparations start in long before the snow came and travelers say it made all the were killed in a crash on 270 in rockville. evan lambert is live with more on that. >> reporter: 33-year-old sander cohen was a deputy fire marshal. he was also a volunteer at this fire station here in rockville. flag is at half staff tonight. we're learning that cohen stopped his car to help an fbi agent. who had crashed on 270. both men were then hit several minutes later by a car. police and fire marshalls escorted cohen's body to a funeral home in rockville. his colleagues shared this photo of cohen with us. he was in a supervisor rerole. maryland state police say around 10:00 last night, fbi supervise recrashed on 270. deputy chief cohen was avenue duty and stopped to help. both men out of their cars and a car cars ahead and hit cohen and wolf sending them over the barrier into the northbound lanes, the three people were injured but survived. both cohen and wolf died from their injuries. colleagues describe cohen as a funny guy who would help anyone. at crash remains under caroline shively has the latest. >> reporter: sexual harassment scandals forced congressman john couldn'tiers and trent franks plus al franken to quit this week, the pressure had been building for weeks but franks was a surprise oh to washington. it reportedly offered a female staffer five million dollars if she would conceive a child with him. the congressman denies intimidating or trying to have sex with anyone in his office. but quit effective yesterday after his wife was hospitalized. on thursday, franks said, quote, in the midst of this current cultural and media climate i'm convinced i would be unable to complete a fair house ethics investigation. we're also learning more about how your tax dollars secretly got paid out to workers allegedly harassed by members of congress. thursday night, ratty house ethics committee riotered that it had stepped up its investigation of blake farenholt accused of sexual harassment of a staffer, he denies the allegations but settled the case for $84,000 out of that fund, across man alste hastings said to settle a lawsuit against him. role call broke that story saying a federal employee accused hastings of making unwanted sexual advances and threatening her job. reaction to these cases has been swift. >> there is no place for sexual harassment in our society. especially in congress. period. >> this is not about politics. i
