270, live with the new detail tonight. and fires continues to burn out of control on the west coast. destroying homes and forcing evacuations. now, firefighters gearing up. we begin with a weather alert. it sure has been beautiful. hasn't it? the snow started falling last night, and it still coming down right now. >> think of officially in the holiday spirit. take a look. this is the this afternoon around dc not sticking in most places and it is making for a pretty picture >> the question everyone is asking, how long will the snow stay around. gwen is following all of this for us in conditions and bitter cold. so we'll get one thing, then the other, you're absolutely right. first snow moving through and this is not a small system it stretches to the northeast, here be the i95 corridor, and we have still a few heavy bands coming down, if you take a look at the south, you can see where lower southern maryland got the big bullet of it all. st. mary's, to be exact but this is stretching to the northeast new england getting hit but tonight we'll see gradually starting to pull out. dealing with advisories and watches, however, we have a winter weather advisory for the area shaded here in the purple. that's in effect through until 9:00 tonight. and with the wind picking up a little bit. could make visibility a little bit tricky in some areas, i'm concerned about the falling temperatures tonight, however, because for tonight, slick icy conditions on any untreated surfaces and sidewalks, as well as for tomorrow morning as our temperatures really dip below freezing for the overnight lows, right now, 32 at dc, 29 at dulles, 28 at winchester, 29 at baltimore, and 32 at fredericksburg but your overnight low, chilly 28 degrees. more bitter cold to come all have those details later. a devastating chain reaction crash on i 270, two low law enforcement officers were killed. a chief deputy officer and an fbi agent were stopped by another car after the fire marshal stopped to help the fbi agent who was having car issues. evan lambert is live at a funeral home in rockville tonight. evan? >> reporter: matt, 33-year-old chief deputy sander was escorted by police and fire marshall officials at the funeral home. you're seeing some of that on your screen, it happened just moments ago. deputy sander cohen was a veer firefighter also a chief deputy fire marshal as well. and we are learning that chief deputy cohen stopped to help an fbi agent stranded both hit by car several minutes later. fire officials shared this photo. she was 33 and in as supervisory role. he also volunteered at rockville station three. maryland state police say around 10:00 last night, fbi supervisory special agent carlos wolf was driving southbound on i 270 south of falls road when he collided with the median. deputy chief cohen was off duty and stopped to help. both men got out and cohen put on his flashers to close down the travel lane backpack while the law enforcement officers were outside the car, a car tried to avoid the stop cars ahead and hit cohen and wolf sending them over the barrier the northbound lanes, a second man was hit in those lanes, the three people inside the car were injured but survived. both cohen and wolf died from their injuries. >> duty or off-duty they're there to serve, their commitment compels them to serve and protect others in way that is often puts them at grave risk. unfort unfortunately the cost to public service is extremely high as it was last night. >> reporter: maryland governor larry hogan send his condolences fbi supervisory specialist agent carlos wolf and sander cohen deputy chief and member of rockville volunteer fire department served our communities every day to keep families thank these officers for their selfless dedication to our state and nation. now, according to state police, at this point, charges are not imminent. they say that the causes of the initial crash with that fbi agent and the secondary crash that killed both of those law enforcement officers are still under investigation tonight. listen in rockville, evan lambert, fox 5 local news. a look now at our other top extended forecast no word on what caused damaging fire that spread is to several townhomes in capitol heights. it broke out around 10:00 on dillon court. witnesses began knocking on doors and helping people inside get to safety. when firefighters arrived they found a townhomes fully engulfed in flames, the fire was so intense a second alarm was sound, no one was hurt. but the fire caused about $200,000 in damage and has forced a dozen residents in the three damaged townhomes. a fe $100,000 in damage to a home in he will can it city. it started in the garage of a home on spring meadow drive. it damaged the home and two vehicles parked outside. soon no word on what caused it tonight. one person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, three others escaped and were not hurt. for the district, residents of a home in southeast got quite a shock this afternoon, a driver crashed into their how this on 15th place, the impact was so severe, it sheared off the home's gas meter. no one inside was hurt fortunately. inspectors are checking out the home for structural damage. police are investigating what happened, no word on whether the driver will be charged. take a look at this video. it is continuing tonight to california now where the fires continue to burn in the southern part of the stay. the numbers, they really are staggering. half a dozen fires have destroyed buildings over past week, firefighters are making some progress, but there is still a long way to go. fox's dan springer reports. >> reporter: the wildfire incinerated hundreds of homes in southern california continues to burn saturday. fueled by high winds, firefighters battle for a sixth day on the front lines with two new fires burning north of san diego >> we're facing a new reality in the baltimore, 29 at dulles and 30 at manassas. here's a look at that cold air, we got an arctic air mass that will move its way across midatlantic and that's where we'll have issues because icing problem overnight tonight into the early hours of tomorrow if you're going to morning services. by 9:00, 30, by 11:00, we're talking 30 as well. and as i said, bitter cold and icy slick spots, tomorrow, gusty
