As cycling has grown in popularity, there has beente grear concern about safety. Youre aware of the cases that we have covered, the unfortunate incidents in the news. Is d. C. Etting to the point where were embracing this as part of our culture an, you know, oare bikers and drivers starting to gain an acceptance of one another . Would you say . Well, i think that biking is not going anywhere. So pedestrians, cyclists, motorists need to be cautiou over the last three years, we raced over 100,000 for the program which is aimed at cre e creating safer streets for ve eone. Okay. With all of the city bike ridem share prograe have implemented, along with e Mayors Office and bike lanes that are now on thecity streets, i think there has been a strong embrace for that culture here in the district. You have to see it to believe it. They are a community of women of color whoshare a passion for cycling. Joining me now from the group black girls do bike is adina crawford, black girls do bike ambassador. So welcome. Your group works to introduce and promote the joy of cycling to allen wom. But especially women and girls of color. Why is that . I think it is really important for women of color to get out and be active on the pavement. And what we promote is growth and support of women moving in any form. Women of all colors. Of all colors. But especially important for women of color. Absolutely. How did your Organization Get started . Black girls do bike, it got started by monrra gaon, the founder who lives in philadelphia. She decided there was time for a change. And more for community, diversity, inclusivity. She said lets start something called black girls dobike. She created this organization and it is now blooming all over. Youre based in montgomery county, your branch is based in the local branch is based in montgomery county. Yes. But it is all over the country. All over the country. We have a branch in virginia, d. C. , maryland, and asr fa out as the virgin islands. And how many years has for how many years has black girls do bike been participating in the bike that is coming up on saturday . This will be year three for most of the ladies. It is amazing. Theyre so excited about this event. How many members do you have . Montgomery county and the b ikboe,a we have maybe ut y a but you do lots of other things. Tell us about some of your you advocate, youre big on education, volunteerism. Yes. All of those things. Just to promote and get the word t therethat this is important for us to do and even if youre not a cyclist or you want to take part inm sohing, volunteer and do that. And we speak at different events to talk about the promotion of women on the bike. And cycling and moving in any form. So, dou bike year round or bike only when the weather is good . Thats not a trick question. Just wondered. I will say im a Spring Summer cyclist. Okay. I do not bike outdoors when the weather is cold. Im indoors spinning. So i still manage to keep it up. So tell us about what you all do when you get together and how often you meet as an organization. I went throug the website, and it was just the pictures are so compelling of all of the women dressed in their gear and their natural hairdos and obviously just enjoying being out in the elements and bing together as a group. Absolutely. Fellowship, it is fellowship. When we get together, it is like you havent seen your best friend in 20 year and it is like, you know, the screams, the hugs, and the support system tht we have for one another. I can actually go on the website and if i have a question about something, im not familiar th a bikepart, im going to get an answer because we are just that connected. Even if someone is all the way in california, they c give you that advice and give you that virtual cheer and support f whatever youre doing. Tell me how important that is for your ladies. It is important because oftentimes how can i say this we dont get enough support but when you get that support from yur fellow cycleista, it is amazing. You feel more confident, you feel powerful. It just makes you feel good all the wd. Aroun do you involve your children . My children are grown. Do the ladies who have they do. Some of them bring their kids out and they post photos of them taking their kids through the park and cycling. And just introducing them to the sport of just cycling is important at an early age. I was going to ask you about that. If you take the kids along, then you sort of introduce them to that lifestyle. Yes. Early on. And then they grup, you know, appreciating that kind of activity. Absolutely. That physicality. Yes. Thatsportant for africanamerican children. Absolutely. Because of the the statistics show that sometimes were a little more sedentary and i think that bringing us along at an early age is just to decrease that. So is the d. C. Bike ride one of the highlights of the year for black girls do bike or one of the big events you all participate in as a group . Ne of the big events. They just a whole group of them just came back from new york, bike new york. B now the focus is the d. C. Bike ride and were expecting a large number of women to come out. So were super excited about this. Is there any fee to associated with the joining of your group . None at all. It is all free. Just bring your positive energy and a smile. Okay. All right. And a bike. And a bike. A helmet. A helmet. Iking safety is very important. Adina crawford, nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. Ice to learn about black bike. Do all right. Thank you. And next, how Wounded Warriors are getting in on the d. C. Ride. Well be right back. Re our products and services bring moments like this to every family. Shop topbrand appliances at sears, including kenmore. Making moments m this is military ppreciation month as well as National Bike month. And another group that will be joining us for the d. C. Bike ride saturday is the Wounded Warrior project. Joining me now is joe plenzer, Communications Director for the Wounded Warrior project. Good to talk to yha and know tour Wounded Warriors will be represented at the ride. Tell us how you are at working with the d. C. Bike ride. Were going to have about 120 Wounded Warriors and family members out there for the ride. So were excited out it. Any opportunity we get to go through a closed course in d. C. N were goto take that. Youre into cycling anyway. Yes, personally, yes, very much so. Our organization is too. So we do a lot of adaptive cycling events for our warriors called soldier ride. And it is we fit the bikes to their abilities and level. If youre mittsmissing an arm, well figure out away to te manipulahe bike. We try to make sure that there is no limitations for our warriors to get out there and ride. Ething that is really special that is going to happen on saturday during the bike ride is that the 14th street bridge, which overlooks the pentagon, and the cemetery at arlington national, will be renamed for the day. Tell us about that. We understand that theyre going to rename the 14thbrtreet idge the Wounded Warrior bridge for the day. Really excited about that. And im told t thatre should be some flags lining the bridge with our logo on it. So i think it is going to be awesome. Thats going to be really t special for families and for the Wounded Warriors who will be participating. Sure, absolutely. I think as were leaning into memorial day at the end of the month, it is a great way to honor the 7,000 Service Members who have dieddsince 9 11 an the 53in000 who have been jured and wearing purple hearts since 9 11. It is important to the Wounded Warrior project to be involved inev communityts like this. Tell us why that is so significant. We figure today there fewer than 20 million veterans in the united states. And out of aul popation of 320,000. And 3. 3 million of those have served since 9 11. And when you figure that, less than one half o 1 of the nation is serving in the military or even knows a veteran. Small. Numbers ar anytime we can connect the young men and women who serve their country with the communities that they have defended, i think it is a great opportunity both ways. The public gets to understhnd ir challenges and experiences and they get to connect with the public and tell their stories and it is great, it is great for thor warrito come together and connect with each other and with the community. Yours is the largest direct Service Charity in the country. Well, for veterans. For veterans. Yes. We have about 7 million donors. And we have we support dect services to about 29,000 Wounded Warriors and another 32,000 Family Support members every year. That number continues to grow. So we get anywhere between 13 to 1500 new warriors coming to us looking for services and programs every month. So we got donors and then you got the Wounded Warriors and their families. Sure. All ofhom youre serving. Absolutely. What is the, you know, the thing that most people who are n not coted with the military, what do they need to know about Wounded Warriors, about their contributions, about their the challenges of reintegrating . They served their country. Sure. I think that transition from the military into the civilian community is always a clefrhall. You got o of the military in four years or 20 and retired off of active duty, it is a big transition. Youre going from one culture to anotheng youre goifrom a place where it is really about mission and team and group to a place where, you know it may be more indivually grouped. So i think we tend to be more technologically connected and less physically cnected and emotionally connected. And it is important to, especially in areas that dont have large military populations, to welcome those veterans back into the community and help them really solve for finding what are they going to do, what job occupation, and what kind of ngcompensation theyre goio get. Now that theyave served most of us want to go into jobs where we serve, again, a you find a lot of veterans who actively serve, seek out Public Service jobs. All righty. Well, forthose who want more information about the Wounded Warriors project, they can look you up online. Were online at www. Woundedwarriorproject. Org. Thank you so much. See you out there.
