the new o discoverywhat could be causing a sudden spike in li poli cases in children across the country. survivor story. the arizona man trapped for days in an abandoned mine shaft talked about hissc . >> i heard somebody hollering back. i broke down and started crying. and wicked good. off oston red sox finish the l.a. dodgers, a sounding 5-1 win to take homed another wo series title.y, toda monday, october 29th, 2018. from nbc news, this is a special edition of "today," with sava guthrie, live from pittsburgh, and hoda kotb, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> and good morning, everybody. welcome to this split edition of "today." it's monday morning. i'm savannah guthrie o the tree of life synagogue in pittsburgh. hoda is in studio 1a. you can imagine, this is aun coy that is brokenhearted. >> you can feel that pain a around the country this morning. >> so many people are grieving with the people in pittsburgh. the hearts of the nation are going out to everyone in what is a tight knit codunity. anhis morning, we're more about the people who lost their lives in this house of worship. n we look at the scr there, this is the front page of "the pittsburgh post-gazette" this morning. and the focus is where it should be, on 11 good lives that were lost. i know we have breaking news. we'll get back toyou. >> we have this story, a brand-new boeing 737, with 189 people, onboacluding three young children, crashing moments after taoff from the airport in irnnearby 145. kelly cobiella has more on this. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. the pilot asked to return to the airport three minutes int this flight. air traic control okayed that request but the passenger never made it back. this morning, rescue crews desperately searching the sea off of the coast of thene indosian capital, jakarta. they're finding debris, a crushed cellphone, mangled plane wreckage and an oil slick. but so far, no sign of survivors. relatives desperate for news are gathering at the airport where the plane was supposed to land and in jakarta where it took 3 off. fants along with 20 members of innearby sha's finance industry. the flight disappeared from radar 15 minutes after takeoff. radar sws the jet looped south, and then climbed north, losing altitude, climbing again and dropping off screen. there was no distress signal and the weather was good at the time. the plane was new, delivered in august of this year and only in the air for two months. the airline said the pilot and co-pilot had combined 11,000 hours of flying time. ovnight, lion air said that the jet was cleared to fly. the crash site is in shallow water, just over 100 feet deep. helicopters, ships and divers are searchi for the wreckage and the black boxes, as famiies pray for a miracle. >> you mention this 737 was brand-new. does boeing have anything to say about it? >> reporter: they offered their condolences. this plane in paicular, the 737 max is one of the most advanced and fastest selling passenger t. befo the first jets went out, boeing grounded the fleet for a short time because of the engines. that was resolved and they're selling very well. this morning, boeing is going to provide technicalnt assiso investigators if requested. now, we send it back to savannah i pittsburgh. >> hoda, thanks so much. as you can imagine, it ist a difficnd emotional start to the week here. people are struging for answers in the wake of the attacn this sin gol herynagogue. 11 people were killed. this morning, we are learning more about all of them. victim. i'm a survivor. i'm a mourner. >> reporter: overnight, the rabbi of the tree of life synagogue recounting the heart-stopping moments a gunman opened fire in a house of worship, k 11 people. >> seven of my congregants were shot dead in my sanctuar the has been defiled. >> reporter: they came together in a sea of horror. a community coming together, faiths united on all fronts. >> our hearts are with these families. wonderful, wonderful families. >> the city's >>scarred. eporter: this morning we're learning new details about the 11 lives senselessly stolen. they ranged in age from 54o 97 years old. among them, 75-year-old joyce fineberg, a retired researcher at the universitsbof pigh. remembered as a powerhouse intellectual and thoughtful. brothers cecil and david rosenth rosenthal, dcribed as kind, gentle and inseparable. r,d 55-year-old daniel stein, a retired grandfat remembered as a family man. >> he was a fun guy. he had a dry sense of humor. everybody loved him. >> he treasured every minute. >> reporter: ghover we spoke two sisters of victim richard gottfried, a dentist said to be at the heart o synagogue.of life >> it has really sunk in yet. >>eporter: his third sister, carol, was inside, too. and she survived. >> he is -- was the kindest, most loving, caring person. he always did for othe. >> reporter: from washington to paris and the vatican, vigils and tributes around the world. in israel, a strong rebuke by israeli prime minister ng min netanyahu and solidarity at jerusalem's wailing wall. >> every jewish person when they heard this, they were in shock and pain. >> reporter: this mornin flowering line the street of the synagogue, a tribute of giving where so much has been takenay joining us now are two of the doctors that treated people on saturday. lenny weiss is the ems medical director. he was among theirst to arrive on the scene. and dr. alexandra castro. good morning to both of you. or. weiss, you were here early and so soon because this is your neighborhood. what was it like to comeeeere and what you saw? >> i still can't get over what it looks likenow, let alone that morning. i was actually in bed, having worked late the night before, and i heard a lot of noise that i thought was construction and immediately recognized automatic gunfire. i heard yelling that wot recognizable as anything you would hear in a neighborhood on a saturday morning, either. i jumped up and tried to figure out what was going on. i knew if i didn't find out, my phone would probably be ringing soon. we have a physician response i called in to dispatch to see if there was an actual staging rea established and they indicated there was and there was an event occurring. ere andyou came right treated some of the wounded, as i understand it? >> i was in o command post. the scene was not secure for a long time. we had to establish a safe way for people to get people in. >> was your heart racing? >> it was, yeah. i was nervous for my neighbs, self, my family, my community. but i knew i hadob to do the normally do, wking with our city and the paramedics. theolice officers and the paramedics established the scene efficiently. >> obviously, ere's a trauma center somewhat nearby. dr. castro, you're a trauma surgeon. >> on saturday, we had bn in communication with the physicians that were on-scene. and as an emergency medicine physician, our job is very important that we prepare the department for a mass cualty event like this. we have drills that we do and we prepare for things like this. you fornything prepare something like this? >> it's the emotional stress, the unknown of knowing how many patients are going to come in, the severity of the injues. you kn we were able to gather a team together ofore than 50 individuals with an instant's notice. >> i've been here jt a short time. but i can already feel the pride that people in pittsburgh feel in this commuhtty and how t it is. and this must break your hearts. >> absolutely. we're used to a calm environment. happy and ws really tou fgh is see these events happening all over the country and the rl and we don't know if it's going to happen. wew want to k when it's going to happen. sad.s very we're unfortunately prepared. but once you have to spring into that action, it's almost disappointment we had to do this. but i'm proud at tponse of our medics and police officers and the rest of our pub safety department. lic a lot ofercs on saturday. dr. weiss, dr. castro, you were of them. meantime, we're learning more abouthe alleged 46-year-old gunman. investigators arecoing his social media footprint and looking at what he was doing in the hours and days leading up to this horrific shooting. miguel almaguer is at allegheny hospital with that story. good morningteo you. >> rep savannah, good morning. this is where the suspect is being held and treated. imes by hot multiple police before he surrendered. it's unclear if he is speaking to investigators. there's still many unanswered questions. methodically gunning down his victims, floor-by-floor, police say robert bowers used his three handguns, like the ones he posted on social media, and an ar-15 to carry out his massacre. had he not been shot by police, investigators feel the bloodshed could have continued. >> h bowers made it out of that facility, there's a strong possibility that additiona violence would have occurred. >> reporter: after taken into custody, bowers alledly told police, they're committing genocide to my people. i just want to kill jews. while the fbi says the motive is clear, a hate crim they are piecing together a timeline. >> we are seeing if there was cameras in position to capture footage. >> reporter: 13 miles away from the crime scene, investigators ided bowers' apartment. on gab, a social media platform, often tied to hate and whitet supremacist was shut down overnight, bowers railed against president trump, saying trump is a globalist, not a nationalist. just before the bloodshed, bowers posting, i'm going in. terry owens is his neighbor. to know that ing someone that has that much hate was on the other side of my wall. >> reporter: the suspect faces 11 counts of murder, including several hate crimes. investigators say 21 guns were registered in his name. they say the violence certainly could have continued had he not been stopped by police. savannah? >> i don't think i've even absorbed it yet. there's so much hate in this country. and it needs to >> hate, intolerance, that's noh he was. that's not who i am. >> that's not who i am. had you felt afraid before this? >> no. >> no. >> i can't live that way. either.n't hate him, >> reporter: the shooter? >> the shooter. i can't hate h because if i do, it will eat me up alive from the inside-out. >> t have him murdered, because that's what it i was, really hard to take. a really wonderful person was taken from us way too soon. >> it's not easy for you both to be herealking to me. >> no, it's not. >> reporter: i know you wanted to, for a reason. >> and the reason is, because you have a job to do and you're going to be talking about him anyway. so, the things that you say about him, i want them to be who he is. and he is -- was the ndest, most loving, caring person. >> dr. arrigottfried, one of the wonderful people that were gunned down. i'm joined by rabbimy jeffrey s. he was presiding over his congregation at the time of the shooting. the hearts of the nation are with you. >> the world. >> indeed the wholeworld. you haven't been back here since saturday. this is your ysynagogue,r home, your house of worship. tat crosses your mind? >> i didn't see stars and the tributes to people untca i ht a little of the news last night and i saw it in person this morning. for a moment, i felt like, i'm standing at a cemetery and this is a massive mausoleum. it's my home and it's been desecrated. >> you said to me atsew mom ago, you could never use that sanctuary ain. >> ian't be used again in its present conditio the bullet holes are too numerous to count. bute will rebuild because we're tree of life. we've been here 154 years. and you can cut off some branches but the tree will continue to gro w and wel be back. >> you can see how this community ofllfaiths, how people are pulling together, in this moment. and i can't imagine whatou saw, rabbi, on saturday morning. it's just a regular saturday morning. you're leading services, your most faithful are there. t happenedll me w >> we start at 9:45. and the regulars arethere. these good, decent people, who were over there. and whin a few minutes, i heard what i thought was crashing metal of one of the oat racks. and i thought of our seniors maybe lost his or her balance and ptled on to right themselves and fell, god forbid, or some ting. and att moment, three members of the congregations that we house in our building, i saw them ran down the stairs. that's when the next set of bullets rang out, within another 10 or 15 seconds.'v while never personally witnessed or heard gunfire, thank god, unt thismoment, just something inside told me, this is nfire. and i told my congregants to drop to the floor, be quiet, don't say a word, don't move. i thought the pews are thick, old wood, perhaps there's protection there. and the people at the front of the sanctuary, i got them out to the frof the sanctuary. there were doors leading to this labyrinth of auilding to g people out to different places, whether it's to exit or hide in a closet or something. i tried to see if i could go back to get eight remaining people in the back of the congregation. i could tell, the gunfire was getting louder, itas coming up the stairs and i couldn't save those eight people. >> did you see the gunman? >> i nev >> did you hear him say anything? >> iny never heard words from the gunman at any time. i ran through the back of the sanctuary and went up the stairs. the exit route i thought i could take, i didn't feelas a safe route because he would have a sight line where i would be coming out and i thought that was foolish. i went up into the choir loft. and i heard him execute my congregants. i can't watdidn't watch it. i couldn't watch it. i called 911 and i stayed on the line for what felt like an eternity. they said it was 20 minutes. i heard footsteps. and fortunately there's a bathroom up there. the lock didn't. wo i with all my might just held on to the door andye p to god, don't find me. and fortunately, s.w.a.t. came after what seemed like an eternity and rescued at that point, they had not caught him.ti he was at large somewhere in the facility. they safely escorted me out of the building, closer to this end of the building and had me run across hestreet. that's probably that famous 15 minutes of fame photo of me, running across the street with my prayer shawl on because they escorted me down the street. the police were hidin they didn't know where he was yet. they hadn't caughthim. police officers were shot as they tried to stop him. >> we know. >> and we now know according t the police that he had horrendous things to say and he targeted m of the jewish faith. he targeted this hoace. do you wrap your head around that? how do you feel about that? just the thought of it hurts s much. >> at first, i think it's a mixture of anger, of disbelief, all rolled into one. am i really experiencing this? is this a horrific nightmare ang i'ng to wake up? was this a cruel drill that the fbi h us do to practice? all those things go through simultanenusly. and i saw that, tre is hate. and it just seems to be getting worse. ul the president may come and visit. you like to visit with him? what was it about the character that y drew in? >>fo i think -- i thin me, in some ways, they p is almost like a prayer. and i say that to y, we spend minutes with these characters and we really see them.e like, really listen to them. and i don't know that we make laough time for that in our lives, partiy in this country right now, to listen to peopnk who t something completely opposite of us. and we get to do that. we sitn a theater and listen to people who believe things that are on the opposite end of the spectrum of identity. but we really hear them and we allow them to matter to us. all four of the people. and there's something really special about that. i think it's why audiences are so surprised and moved, because we d't make enough time to listen to people who we consider other, no matter who w e. >> yeah. >> to say, like, you, white man, you black woman, you -- all of these different identities to say, why do you think what yout k? and to make room to just hear it, and see how i feel about it, is so special. >> you're a mother of two. >> i am a mother o three. >> mother of three, excuse me. how did you draw on your experiences as a mom for this role? >> oh, gosh. you know, it's interesting. the play is teaching me so much every day. i feel like i'm still learning from her. and one of the things that i ink every mother w sits in the play -- every parent, actuly, who comes to tplay, is faced with the powerlessness of parekning. yo, there was a time when this person -- you could contro, everythiind of, about them, in the very, very, very benning. but parenting is a lot about letting go and how you do that with grace and ease and empower your kids to make the rht choices. it is an adven dre. obviouslng that as a parent of an african-american kid has its challenges. >> the producers on this thing, dwyane wade and gabrielle union, as parents were raising black boys in florida, a stand your ground and open carry state, dwyane wade and i know the fear and frtration and anxiety that goes hand in hand, when so many demonize, weapon size and criminalize black and brown bodies. i have mixed race daughter. how do you feel about raising children in the world that we live in now?
