the back deck and to the deck of neighboring homes. five townhouses were touched by the flames. it was so cold outside that all the equipment froze. montgomery county fire says it was 9 degrees with a wind chill of negative 5. this fire cost about $1 million in damage and left 20 people without a place to call home this morning. we're continuing to follow breaking news this morning out of prince george's county. you see right there, this car nosedived into a sink hole which formed early this morning by a water main break. this all happened on 52nd avenue and emerson street in edmonston. the car was toe etowed away and thankfully, the driver is doing fine. derreck ward is live with another water main break in hyattsville. what are you learning out there? >> reporter: you can look at this scene here. route 214 near the intersection of hill road. they're dealing with a 12-inch water main break. fortunately, it's only affected one customer. not fortunately for that customer but it could be worse. you can see the issue they're dealing with here. all of the ice. they had to shut down this lane westbound. prepare to slow down and take caution through here because of this. again, could be a lot worse. in edmonston, where the car ended up in a hole full of ice. prince george's county is dealing with 54 of these water main breaks. that is wssc in prince george's county. 29 are being repaired now. another 25 are awaiting crews. 12 others that they're watching because of possible issues. as far as montgomery county is con c conserved, they're dealing with 19 in that jurisdiction. a dozen are awaiting crews and three are being watched. again, this is because the temperature, when it gets low like this, it tends to make the materials more brittle, susceptible to shifts in the earth and, of course, the expansion of the water. put it all together, you have a fortunately, again here, they cleared a lane through. it's not busy today. this being a weekend. they hope to have the repair done. one customer being affected. all over the region, people are indeed dealing with some icy conditions because of what's going on under the ground, when the temperatures get this low. we are live in hyattsville, derrede derrick ward, news 4. back to you. bundled up for a reason there. a montgomery county teacher firfire ed after his school learned he was a leader in the alt-right movement. >> you remember the deadly rally in charlottesville over the summer. greg conte was one of the organizers. mark segraves spoke with conte about being terminated. >> reporter: i spoke to greg conte by phone and he told me he wasn't surprised the leadership here at holy cross fired him, but he said he was disappointed because he enjoyed his years here as a teacher and a coach. greg conte had been a substitute teacher here at the academy of 2014. he spoke to news 4 by phone. >> i think they fired me because they were afraid of negative backlash from the media. >> reporter: according to school officials, there was never problems with his work or complaints from parents or students. the school got ananonymous tip, identifying an article that listed the teacher as a leader in the alt-right movement and one of the organizers of the charlottesville protest that turned deadly. he can be seen here next to richard spencer. conte is in the blue blazer and sunglasses. greg conte used an alias for his work in the alt-right movement and on his social media accounts. >> yeah, i want to, you know, do it anonymously because there are huge social costs to being publicly in favor of the alt-right positions. >> reporter: in a letter to parents, the head of holy cross wrote, a substitute teacher, greg conte, is a member of the alt-right movement and has been >> there's going to come a time where institutions, whether it's schools or employers, have to say, you know, i don't care. >> reporter: conte tells me at this point he doesn't plan to contest his firing with any type of legal action. he says he wants to focus on his work with the alt-right movement. in kensington, mark segraves, news 4. and it was a story that horrified all of us, especially parents around our area. a former school aide accused of being hiv positive and sexually abusing students. carlos bell pleaded guilty on friday to more than 27 counts related to molesting children. prosecutors also say the former charles county school aide tried to transmit the virus to some of the victims. police do not believe any of the boys contracted it. bell worked at a middle school in waldorf and coached track. he'll face up to 190 years in prison when he's sentenced in hands on incredible dashcam video. it shows what led up to a man shooting at a deputy and virginia state trooper as they were chasing him down i-95. this was last week. a stafford county sheriff's deputy gets on 95, chasing the black, suv. investigators believe gregory lee shot and killed his wife and then took off. a few minutes into the chase, the suv is stopped. the driver angles into the left lane and opened fire opt deputy. the deputy is okay, but the bullets right went through the windshield, right through the headrest and frayed the fabric. you can see it piercing. the deputy kept going. look to the right. the suv flipping over. what caused that?
