the colder temperatures. look at the windchill. at 4:00, it's 19. 1 below in pittsburgh. we have colder numbers still by tomorrow morning. we're talking about the snow chances. they are not great but they are there. more cold for the new year. we'll break it down for you and take it day by day and hour by hour. we'll see you back here in 10, 15 minutes. >> you've got it, doug. in the meantime, new details about a teen suspected of shooting and killing a reston couple in their home. scott and buckley were shot and then the teen turned the gun on himself. we found out that he dated their daughter. david culver spoke with someone who is close to the shooter. david, what's the story? >> reporter: i can tell you that i called police today and they tell me that the teen suspect is still in the hospital, still in critical condition. he's also a juvenile. we're not able to release his name but i went by his wharton home and spoke with a woman who answered the door as i walked up. she is a very close relative to the teen suspect. we won't tell you out of respect how she's related but she went on to tell me, as she was sobbing and she was in tears, that she feels horrible for the victims and their families. she also tells me, and as you mentioned, the teen suspect dated the victim's daughter, that they very much loved the teen's girl, the victims' daughter who was involved in this as well. she was not injured but police say she's the one who initially called 911. i also sp that community and the neighbor didn't want to go on camera but said this is an incident that has now impacted their community as well. >> i just feel so sad, two families just ruined. >> reporter: this is a growing memorial. in just the past 20 minutes or so, i saw a family of five walking up to lay more flowers down outside of the victims' home here in wharton. we're going to continue to follow this story and bring you more updates. for now, pat and leon, back to you. >> david, before i let you go, did the neighbors tell you that they knew the situation between the daughter and this young man and whether or not they knew he was a white supremacist? >> rept reality. the neighbors didn't know the intimate details of the relationship between the teen who lives here and the suspect. when it comes to allegations of supporting nazi agenda, it was interesting because there was a report that a swastika was mowed into a lawn at the neighborhood and they didn't learn about that until a couple of weeks ago. it just became well known within the community. they felt it wasn't something that was widely publicized there. >> wow. interesting. david culver reporting live, thank you, david. first at 4:00, an update to a story we told you about on news4 today. a mother is recalling an incident that happened when her son was killed. officers arrived just before 3:00 and they found a man shot in the head. he died in the home. a woman who says she's the vicm saw him die. >> he died in my arm gls whs? >> he got shot in his face. he died in my arms. >> police don't have a detailed description of the gunman. the victim's mother thinks her son knew the man who killed him. first at 4:00, new details of the murder of a baltimore police detective. the fbi has declined to take over the murder investigation of detective shawn suitor. he was set to testify before a commission. there is no evidence that his murder was linked to his upcoming testimony. >> i'm waiting for that 3:00 a.m. phone call in the middle of the night that says, guess what, we just got a break in this thing and, you know, i'm optimistic that that will eventually happen. >> commissioner davis says the fbi will continue to help baltimore police department in any way it can. davis also added that there's no evidence to support that suiter committed suicide. there's a $240,000 reward leading to an arrest in this case. we are working for you and helping you navigate all of the tax changes to come. >> that's right. coming up in april, there could be a lot of confusion. >> but some people are starting to work on their taxes right now. we have team coverage. >> jennifer johnson has more on how the day after christmas sales are already impacting our economy. >> reporter: the christmas shopping season turned out to be a big gift for retailers. americans spent way more than a year ago with jumps in electronic sales, jewelry home furnishishings. >> retail sales were up almost 5% and they were up because we saw consumer confidence improving, job growth, low interest rates and we've seen pretty good corporate profits around the world and that's helped the stock market. >> reporter: christmas eve, which fell on a weekend, helped make that as almost as successful as black friday with shoppers generously spending. >> comparatively, it's a lot more. >> reporter: the consumer board says expectations remain historically strong levels, suggesting growth well into 2018. president trump call it is a christmas gift to all americans, more money in your paycheck. but not everyone is convinced. >> it's just destroying the middle class even further so i'm in the middle class. >> i'm probably going to need to budget better next year because i think i'll take a hit being in the middle class. >> reporter: this year, anyway, online biggest winner, led by amazon.com, which led record breaking sales for the holiday season. jennifer johnson, nbc news, washington. >> and our team coverage continues with news4's chris gordon who is live at the fairfax government center. what's the situation there, chris? >> reporter: well, thousands of people here in fairfax county are prepaying their property taxes for 2018. trying to avoid the new federal tax cap of $10,000 for state, federal and real estate taxes. right now is a good time to stop by because there's barely any wait. the line is shorter and moving more quickly than yesterday. fairfax county is accepting at its counters. >> an easy process, yeah. just waiting in the line. not hard at all. >> they are very well organized. they had greeters out front and telling people what the options are and to come here. so very helpful and well organized and we're very happy with the experience. >> reporter: hundreds of people skip the line by using drop boxes located both inside and out to make their 2018 property tax prepayments. you can also mail your prepayment but fairfax county suggests since time is running out, you should not send a personal check. >> we're advising people not to send checks at this point because there's no guarantee that that money will leave your account in this calendar year. >> so if you pay by mail -- >> cashier's check or money order. that way, the money is being taken from your account at that time. >> reporter: montgomery county, maryland, long lines wind through the hallway. residents can come to the rockville office of the department of treasury. the county suggests mail. they will accept a personal check as long as the envelope is postmarked not later than december 31st. d.c. residents can prepay online or at any wells fargo bank in the district. you are looking live at the line here in fairfax county where they have extended hours at the government center. these tax collectors will be working until 6:30 every night this week to try to get -- to try to remain open so that fairfax county taxpayers can prepay their property taxes. that's the latest. live in fairfax county, back to you, pat. >> chris gordon, thank you. >> and the times that chris talked about, very, very important to keep in mind. we're working for you. if you're returning a gift this week, those returns can actually cost you money if you're not careful. now, before you make those returns, here are some important always have your receipts. some stores are going to limit returns without those receipts, so watch the return clock as well. some stores have return windows as short as 15 days. so make sure you know how long you've got. keep the original packaging and try to put it back in the box as quickly as possible and make sure you know what the return fees are. shipping and restocking fees can add up, especially for online purchases. >> do you have anything to return? >> we don't see this very often. i told you last week it was going to be a cold that freeze's areas like the potomac river. the potomac doesn't give us anything like this. take a look. this is lake-effect snow in parts of northern michigan. upwards of two feet of snow. this is emmet county, michigan. lake erie received five feet of snow in two days. amazing. i would they get it every year but they are getting it big time the next couple of days. it's bringing us very cold air straight out of canada. it's a nice night to be looking outdoors. right now, sitting at 20 degrees, the winds pick up overnight tonight and the windchill is going to be a big factor. current temperatures, these are not windchills, these are temperatures, 23 in hagerstown and 28 in culpeper. 32 in fredericksburg. there's a little right here, some flurries going on in parts of faulqier county. the storm system is moving out of the area and into parts of the atlantic and right now it's just the cold air filtering in here and it's next couple of days. look at these windchills. here we are at 7:00. down to 7 in gate theithersburg. 3 in martinsburg and 12 in ga gaithersburg. tomorrow, a windchill of 7 degrees in d.c. 3 in gaithersburg and 4 in manassas. there's a windchill advisory but it's only for areas back towards the mountains. it does not include our area. you have to get windchills at 12 below zero. some of the ski resorts, back around petersburg, no wind advisory here but that doesn't mean it's not going to be cold. we're talking about really cold air. temperatures tomorrow, 28 for a high temperature. breezy and cold and windchills in the teens all day. so it goes without saying, make sure you bundle up. not much in the way of exposed skin tomorrow. so if you've got a new scarf you want to put on. 28 tomorrow. 36 on friday. this is the warmest temperature that flurries possible on friday. snow chances on saturday. look at this. look how many days we have at or below freezing here and temperatures in the 20s to start off 2018. starting off with a cold note for sure. >> all right, doug. first at 4:00, a workout for your brain. the one thing you can do right now to help lower your chances for dementia. plus, new video coming into our newsroom. this is a winter wallop out there. one city gets, get this, 100 inches of snow in december. an interesting new study suggests hitting the dance floor may help build your brain. it's a study out of germany. researchers found that older people who took dance lessons twice a week actually reversed some signs of brain aging. the changes happening in the hippacampus part of the brain. social and musical stimulation creates new neuropathways in your brain. frequent dancing also reduced the risk of dementia by 76%. >> so having somebody step on your feet is good for you? >> yeah. >> a new warning for teenagers staying up late on their phone. >> yeah, just a few nights, just a few without sleep can lead to major health problems. this is according to new research out of pittsburgh. two consecutive nights of getting only four hours of sleep affected a teenager's brain. it can lead to a higher risk of depression and addiction. doctors say parents should set firm rules for teens. no social media after 9:00 or 10:00 at night and if that doesn't work, turn off the wi-fi or cut off the data. air travel can be frustrating but usually the payoff is getting to the destination that you intended. unfortunately, though, for some travelers at l.a.x., they wound up exactly where they an ana flight headed for japan turned around yesterday after four hours in the air. an unauthorized passenger managed to get on board the flight with an incorrect boarding pass. two of the people on that flight, model chrissy tiegen and her husband john legend. she sent out a tweet. "they keep saying the person had a united ticket. we are on ana. so basically the boarding pass scanner is just a beedoop machines that register to nowhere." also, "lax flight complete, flight time, 8:20." ana says it was part of the airline security protocol and the pilot made the decision to go back to where they started. >> i don't understand that. because it doesn't appear that that passenger with the united passenger was a securi was a threat to anyone on the plane. why not just continue on to the destination? >> normally when we see a system like this, it brings in cold air and it sticks around for a day or two. that's not going to be the case here. we're going to stay on the cold side. temperatures barely getting above freezing over the next ten days. the warmest temperature that we have is 36. that's well below average. right now, we're at 29 degrees in d.c. 24 in gaithersburg. windchills are already in the teens. and by the time you wake up tomorrow morning, the winds are going to be picking up and what we're expecting here, winds 10 to 24 miles per hour and that means windchills are going to amelia is joining me in 10 to 15 minutes. we'll see you then. >> thanks, doug. growing fears over the flu as the number of cases in our region increases. the flu activity reported from the cdc shows widespread reports in 23 states, including virginia and maryland. erika gonzalez has more. >> reporter: december to february is considered peak flu season and there's already a rise in cases across the country. maryland and virginia included. >> did you get your flu shot this year? >> yes, i did. >> reporter: do you get it every year? >> every year. >> reporter: have you had success when you've gotten the flu vaccine? >> yes. i've been blessed. >> reporter: the cdc breaks down flu levels into five categories. no activity, sporadic, local, that's where d.c. is, regional and widespread. maryland and 23 states reporting widespread flu. >> it's clear that the number of cases of influenza this year are increased compared to last year. >> this doctor is a specialist in infectious diseases. >> part of the reason we're having a problem this year is that the vaccine is not as effective as perhaps years in the past. >> that's still no reason, he says, to not get the shot nor is it too late. historically, cases of the flu have been reported as late as may. erika gonzalez, news4. >> so we asked on facebook today if you have had the flu so far. so far, most of you say no. but take a look at this. most of the people who have had it also got theç vaccine. a m pessimistic these days. critics say president trump is helping to stoke the racial divide during his first year in office. race in american, today's talk around town, taylor thomas is joining us now. the white house is getting slammed for their response or actually we should say lack of response to any sort of observance of kiwansa. >> our viewers feel like this is a chance for president trump to extend an olive branch to the african-american community that dates back to 1966. there was nothing that came out on his personal twitter account to recognize this. some say they didn't expect t we have others of our listeners saying it's the same old thing with president trump, like aaron from temple hills. >> many of us in the african-american community have been shocked and disappointed by president trump as itel that community. i don't know if it will ever change and i feel that he will for the good of our country. >> so this is the feeling of our viewers. >> we have watched the white house in this last year or so and it has not had the same sorts of traditional observances, whether it's been hanukkah. >> he tweeted about that as well as christmas. >> that's right. the white house did release this statement which reads -- >> okay. >> that's the come plate statement? >> that's the complete statement. it's smaller so i can't read it. again, the issue was, leon, it came from the white house. it didn't come from the president where he had an opportunity to say, happy on the 26th and ends on january 1st. >> what are your listeners saying about the president and his stance about positioning on the nfl issue and has there been any evolution at all in his position and your listener's views? >> give me snow. >> are we going to get a little bit? >> when you get cold like this, that's the natural progression. all right. now it's cold so now we're ready for some snow. the point is, the cold air doesn't give us a chance for snow at all. >> this is like the polar vortex. all of the above. what we've got now is simply arctic air making its way down into the united states and it's really most of north america and it's extremely cold, some of the coldest air in the world happening across parts of north america right now. as far as temperatures are related to the average, our average high temperature is 29 degrees. down 11:00. the windchill is going to be brutal. already in the single digits around the 11:00 hour. now, a little bit of snow and stafford county and this whole area moving on down to the south, montgomery and frederick earlier. very light flurry activity if anything at all and it's all part part of a bigger system which has stayed to the south and that's what we're going to see. this is the jet stream that dips way to the south and far enough out to sea, all of the storms are traveling out and away from our area. that means we stay on the cold side but also on the dry side. so no chance, for the most part, for those storms to come up the coast. we're talking about the windchill and the cold. amelia's been tracking it all day long today. we've been talking about right on through new year's. >> brutal windchills. take a look now. tomorrow is going to be one of the coldest days of 2017 and this is what we're waking up to at 6:00 a.m. a feel's like temperature in the district of 7. about 5 up in frederick and 4 degrees in manassas. at least our one saving grace will be plenty of sunshine. as we head into the afternoon hours, take a look at feels-like temperatures through monday. so through january 21st during the afternoon hours. so the warmest it will be feeling outside on thursday, tomorrow afternoon, feeling about 20. friday and saturday, it will feel like we're in the mid-20s and then another blast of cold air moves in as we close out 2017. only feeling about 15 degrees out there on sunday and about 10 degrees on monday. so what does this mean as we plan out your new year? if you're going to be outside to ring in the new year, you want the puppy coat and gloves 24 degrees. maybe you're going skiing as we close out the new year. it's going to be cold out there. at least the know won't get icing. feels like temperatures will be in the teens. we'll keep it dry. no worries of rain or snow in the forecast. and then this is january 1st. 24 degrees for a high. with feels-like temperatures only between 5 and 10 degrees. and even beyond monday, the pattern stays cold at least for the first week of january. >> happy new year to us with the cold coming in for sure. this is an extremely cold pattern. we've got temperatures, the warmest is 36 on friday. ahead of a storm system. it will bring us some flurries and another chance of snow flurries on saturday. that's the best chance at snow and then the cold air really sets in. look how many days here. we only have in the 20s and most days are well below freezing. much more on this. see you in the 5:00 hour. bring on the bling. workers in new york city are piecing together the final waterford crystal triangle the ball is covered with more than 2600 pieces of crystal. 2017 is about to end and many of us are looking for ways to improve ourselves in 2018. a marist poll found that losing weight and saving money are no longer favorites for resolutions. the number one resolution for next year is just being a better person. >> that's a good resolution. >> that's always a good resolution. you shouldn't have to wait for new year's for that. >> that's right. be the best person you can be all year long. >> do you have one?
