better. 95 north at courthouse road, got the crash on the shoulder. it was a semi in the center lane. still going pretty slowly as you're headed northbound. the problem is in fredericksburg, northbound here after stafford as you approach triangle. after that, it's not so bad. the travel times are fairly good from quantico northbound. 70 south, to clarksburg and then some red line delays to shady grove from earlier delays. new this morning, d.c. police investigating two shootings that happened hours ago. one on florida avenue in southeast d.c., a man was shot on frederick douglas place. molette green has more on the violent night. she is at police headquarters. molette? >> reporter: yeah, aaron, two shootings as you mentioned coming just hours after the police chief's latest appeal to the public to help put an end to this wave of violence in the city. d.c. police telling us the man shot in southeast was hit in the stomach, was conscious and was breathing when he went to the hospital. no word on suspects. police scoured that scene there in southeast d.c., frederick douglas place where all of this happened. then around the same time, another shooting in northeast on florida avenue. that victim was conscious and breathing when they found him. we had a chance to look over the numbers that d.c. police put out about the numbers of murders this year alone. 94 in the capital city compared to 72 last year around the same time. d.c. police say they have made some progress in arresting suspects. >> well, we'll check in with molette throughout the hour. police in northwest d.c. put out new surveillance video. take a look at your screen here. this is related to a deadly shooting. the six different men with all persons of interest in a shooting that happened on 7th street northwest last weekend. police say a gunfight broke out by the shaw metro station. matt shlonsky was caught in the middle of it and died. if you think you recognize any of the men in the video, call d.c. police. i'm meagan fitzgerald at the live desk. we are following a developing story out of bangkok. officials just released images of a suspect in monday's deadly bombing at a shrine. now, thai police are looking for this man, seen wearing a backpack and yellow shirt. the images were captured from television footage near the shrine. the explosion killed 22 people including nine foreigners. 120 others are injured. officials say in a separate incident today, a man threw a small explosive device from a bridge. it landed in the water and no one was injured. >> meagan fitzgerald, thank you. 6:04. developing in indonesia, the search and rescue team did reach the site of the plane crash today. crews uncovered the black box there and that should help determine what caused it to go down. all 54 people on board died. thundershowers in china complicating efforts from the deadly warehouse explosions. teams specializing in handling hazardous chemicals are scrambling to clean up that blast site. 700 tons of sodium cyanide were stored at the warehouse when it exploded last week. almost 70 others are still missing. we are told at least one person who works for the company that owns that warehouse has been arrested. today, more testimony expected in the murder trial of an oxon hill hotel manager. prince george's county police say deandre weems attempted to rob the clarion hotel two years ago. they say jesse chavez tried to stop him and weems shot him in the chest. chavez died. the hotel worker who weems threatened with a gun testified yesterday. chavez's mother could take the stand during the trial. and in another courtroom, a suspect in the murder of a mary washington student will be arraigned. today, steven briel will head back to court in fredericksburg. he strangled grace mann back in april, police say. they were both students at the university. we are learning that his lawyer may ask for a mental health examination. you can check out the nbc washington app for updates later this morning as we continue to learn more. and developing this morning, a former fairfax county police officer is behind bars on murder charges. adam torres turned himself in last night after a grand jury charged him in the death of john geer. he was on the job when he shot and killed geer two years ago. torres said that deer gear was reaching for a gun. coming up, derrick ward has more on why he'll stay in jail for a while. a controversial vote for lawmakers in frederick county, maryland. the county will vote on whether to revoke the all -- english only ordinance. that law requires county business to be conducted in english. supporters of the english only law say that it allows the county to avoid printing documents in multiple languages which saves money. several council members said there's no evidence to support that. the presidential candidates in iowa continue today. marco rubio and john kasich will take voters' questions. they had strong performances at the first republican debate. the state department says as many as 305 of hillary clinton's private e-mails may have included classified information. that's about 5% of the e-mails the state department has sifted through so far. the revelation came after clinton said in an iowa radio interview she never sent or received any e-mails on her private server that had information clearly marked classified. a 1-year-old left home alone. so what does the little tyke do? calls 911, of course. that story and a recent rash of child neglect cases in prince william county. this morning, hundreds of watching "news4 today." >> in prince william county, police had to deal with three child neglect cases this past weekend. police arrested a 56-year-old woman in woodbridge after she left a 1-year-old baby at home. and in nokesville, a suspected drunk driver was arrested with a 12-year-old family member inside the car sunday night. a 24-year-old was charged with felony child neglect after falling asleep and letting a 3-year-old wander into the street. that happened in dale city. right now, wildfires continue to rage across near an area where several resorts are located in washington. this video was shot from a boat on lake chelan. you can see how close they are to the buildings along the shore. the fire has already charred more than 155 square miles and destroyed around 75 homes and businesses. about 2,600 firefighters are battling the wildfire. they're trying to establish a line to keep the flames from reaching downtown chelan. now, a mandatory evacuation older remains in effect story out of wichita, kansas. a man is in custody after he brought an improvised explosive device to a woman's clinic that provides abortions. now, on monday, police say an on-site security guard inspected the backpack and they found that explosive device along with some knives. the building was evacuated. no one was injured. back to you. this is a mild mannered type of man. he loved his kids with a powerful love. that's what he was on his way to do. >> d.c. family distraught over a husband and father who was stabbed to death. we first told you about this stabbing last week. d.c. police say hector felix stabbed eric lee smith in the heart at a bus stop on "h" street northeast. this happened after smith bumped a little girl with his bag. you heard from smith's widow there. here's what his children had to say. >> i'm going to miss him. i'm just going to give him a big old embrace. >> he was a good dad. he is a good dad. he's a great dad. outstanding dad. outstanding father. >> smith's family says they're now struggling to pay for his funeral. they started a gofundme page. we put a link to that on the nbc washington app. we did check for you this morning, it's only raised about $190 so far. well, a father facing murder charges for the death of his 5 week old son. police arrested 28-year-old robert smith sr. yesterday. news4 cameras were there when police responded to the home on 9th street northwest. it was for an unconscious baby at the time and the child's death we're told was suspicious. the infant died from blunt force injuries. closing arguments start in a few hours in the case of a white north carolina police officer. officer randall kerik faces voluntary manslaughter charges. the officer didn't need to kill jonathan ferrell they say in 2014. they say he feared for his life when he responded to the breaking and entering call. new debate this morning over how to keep the six police officers who face charges in the death of freddie gray. he died in april after a spinal injury he somehow got during this arrest. now "the baltimore sun" reports that a defense attorney for one of the officers filed a series of subpoenas that would force prosecutors and a medical examiner to attend hears as witnesses. doing that could get them sequestered from the rest of the case. this afternoon, a sitting congressman is headed to court to fight charges he used grants and charitable donations to replay -- to repay a $1 million campaign loan. pennsylvania congressman fatah is an 11-term democrat. prosecutors say he funneled money to pay for his son's student loans. fatah's son is under indictment in a separate but related case. in "news4 your health" this morning, drinking coffee may help people fighting colon cancer. researchers in boston say stage 3 colon cancer patients who drink four or more cups of coffee a day were less likely to die from the disease. the new study says that patients who drink coffee are less likely to have the cancer return. cancer experts say the study needs some more research. today the fda will make their final decision about that little pink pill some call the female viagra. flibanserin works in the brain to increase the woman's desire to have sex. this drug would help women with an extremely low libido. that pill could be sold if the manufacturer limited the pill's risk. the fda has rejected the pill twice since 2010. well, this next story is for any parent who's having trouble getting your little one to go to sleep. apparently there's a new children's book that promises it can help. in fact, this swedish book says it will put your child to sleep in minutes. it is called "the rabbit who wants to fall asleep." the author says it works by using psychological and positive reinforcement techniques to promote relaxation and to induce sleep. now, the "today" show is going to put this to the test. tune in to find out if this book really works. it's right here at 7:00 on nbc4. we'll find out if you now as we look around our region. we're off to the mild and muggy start. in the upper 60s and near 70 for near washington and maryland. low to mid 70s on the chesapeake bay. now the storm team 4 radar is showing some showers here, west virginia and up into western pennsylvania. the bulk of this is staying well to our west here for the morning hours. but eventually, leading edge of this, now coming into the southern shenandoah valley. that may make its way closer to winchester, perhaps martinsburg and warrenton. even into culpepper over the next few hours. but the greater chance is later this afternoon as temperatures climb. still mid 70s, partly sunny noontime. warm and humid, the mid 80s. not as hot as yesterday by 2:00 or 3:00. then those maybe passing showers and thundershowers coming into the metro area around 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. the sticky humidity with us now. it will only get more uncomfortable to oppressive on wednesday and thursday. the humidity will be increasing. temperatures though will not. we'll be in the upper 80s each afternoon. increasing chance though of an afternoon storm on wednesday. might get a morning shower but a greater chance of midday showers on thursday. and then finally a break from the humidity on friday. partly cloudy, mid 80s. more humid over the weekend, but not uncomfortably sew. another chance of storms coming in on monday. got a new model run coming in now with new hour by hour timing for those storms later today. i'll show you that coming up at 6:31. melissa has a new crash now. what's going on with that? >> brand-new crash in gainesville, at linton hall road. this just popped up here. we also again have that accident from earlier in purr sillville. eastbound 9 is blocked because of that accident. sounds like it's serious, police directing folks through the westbound lanes to get eastbound. taking a look at 95 here in virginia, you can see getting a little bit better here. 95 northbound from fredericksburg to stafford, now we're going about 38 miles per hour this morning. 66, no major problems into town or out of town. looking pretty typical right now. b.w. parkway, 95, 29, everything here nice and green. top of the beltway just a tad slow, outer loop approaching georgia. beltway at landover road, no major issues. back in ten minutes. 6:24 now. today, opening statements start in the trial of a teenager charged with rape in new hampshire. 19-year-old owen labrie is charged with raping a 15-year-old freshman. he said he's not guilty. prosecutors say he allegedly assaulted the girl on the concord campus of the elite st. paul's school. it happened days before he graduated. one man has died, another remains in critical condition after a suicide attempt at the university of honolulu. the 24-year-old man was trying to bring in a teenager who was on a window ledge. that ledge was on the 14th floor of a dormitory building there. both men fell to the ground. the teenager remains in critical condition. this happened on sunday. neither of the young people were students at the university. the man convicted of the boston marathon bombing is now asking for a new trial outside of boston. lawyers for dzhokhar tsarnaev say quote, continuous and unrelenting publicity surrounding the bombing meant jurors in boston could not be impartial. the lawyers say jurors were also inundated with social media posts. he was convicted of 30 federal charges and he has been sentenced to death. we have an update for you now on the american dentist accused of an illegal killing a -- the illegal killing of a lion in africa. his office has reopened in minnesota without him. you can see they posted a security guard outside. the office put out a letter saying dr. walter palmer was not on site and employees had no comment. it's been closed for about a month since palmer killed the lion, cecil, in zimbabwe. today chelsea manning has a hearing that could send her to solitary confinement. she was found guilty of leaking governments to wikileaks. manning is serving 35 years in prison now. she is accused of having prohibited property in prison including the "vanity fair" issue with caitlyn jenner on the cover. college is a time of transition and change for a lot of students and that can mean problems with mental health. >> i started to cry and then my -- then the palms of my hands sweat. then i started all this august here. we're more than halfway through the month. we have had only had half an inch in the metro area. right now getting showers here in west virginia and western pennsylvania. this going to stay well west of us for the morning hours. new model run coming in is going to be showing that this rain coming into the central shenandoah valley may turn into thundershowers by 1:00. near luray and winchester, then they're breaking up as they move further north and another round popping up around 2:00 or 3:00. a diminishing chancearound the metro area. this is a brand-new short range model run showing those thundershowers may be continuing in the mountains, perhaps into the early evening hours. otherwise, it should stay dry around the metro area, but have the umbrella handy anyway. melissa has an update on a crash we had earlier. >> update on the crash in purcellville. i got off the phone with police. charlestown pike route 9 at berlin turnpike, all lanes now open. no lanes are blocked at any point. again, this morning here. lee highway at linton hall road, we have that situation there in gainesville with the blockage of the intersection. headed inbound there on 95, northbound as you're headed out of frederick. fredericksburg i should say. quite slow here as you're headed northbound, going 26 miles per hour. those delays now stretching all the way up into triangle. we had some road work that was late clearing and then that accident that's out of the way, but still slowing things just a bit. looking over prince george's county, overall no major problems there and beltway at good luck road, live picture for you outer loop more volume than the inner loop. >> thank you. it's 6:32 right now. we turn to a developing story this morning. a former fairfax county police officer is on the other side of the law. adam torres waking up in jail after a grand jury charged him with murder in the death of john geer. news4's derrick ward has more on this case. good morning. >> reporter: good morning again, aaron. well, this case does indeed carry a second degree murder charge. that could carry from five to 40 years in jail for officer torres. he was let go from theers forc the 31st and in the interim the charges were brought by the special grand jury. it stems from the incident in august of 2013. there was a domestic call at john geer's home and it turned into a standoff of sorts with geer standing in his doorway. hands above his head for most of the time. a police negotiator had begun to talk to geer and about 40 seconds -- 40 minutes in to that exchange is when the gunshot was fired. officer torres said he saw geer make a move toward his waist band, but others had testified that geer's hands were indeed above his head. now a grand jury found that there was enough there to bring the second degree murder charge. now fairfax county has already agreed to pay $2.9 million to geer's daughters in a settlement of a wrongful death suit brought earlier. live outside fairfax county police headquarter, derrick ward, news4. a 25-year-old man will survive after one of their officers shot him on tory loop in woodbridge. officers first went to a home there last night for some sort of domestic disturbance between a mother and her son. while an officer was speaking with the more, police say the son came at the officer with a knife. police shot him. he and his mother are both in the hospital now. the mother's injuries are not related to the shooting. new details from investigators about a huge fire from the eastern shore of maryland. we first told you yesterday that this one levelled this building at washington college in chesteown. the maryland state fire marshal's office saying it started in a container for used up cigarettes. they say video shows that it spread to mulch, plants, finally the building. no one was hurt in that fire. investigators say it caused $3.5 million worth of damage. we know now the name of the teenager killed in the off road vehicle crash on saturday. police say 17-year-old lester goodwine died when he crashed the utv on the school athletic field this happened behind the stephen decatur school. police said the crash is still under investigation. 6:35. this morning we are learning about funeral arrangements for a man a lot of us knew as a real life superhero. lenny robinson who was known as the route 29 batman was killed on sunday. he dressed up as the caped crusader for charity events and to visit sick kids. a woman who partnered with him said he made a lot of kids very happy. >> he would electrify the room. like it lit up. and kids would run to him and he would open up his big cape and the kids would gather underneath it. like he protected them. >> a great way to be remembered. robinson's funeral set for noo on wednesday in owings mills, maryland. you can donate to the organization robinson worked with. it's called superheroes for kids. it is based in baltimore. well, we expect an update today on the recovery efforts ten years after hurricane katrina. you can see the damage katrina did to the new orleans area when it made landfall as a category 3 storm back in august of 2005. flooding forced more than a million people out of their homes. more than 1,800 people died. housing and urban development secretary julian castro will update recovery efforts later this morning. new details about the massive irs data breach we have been following for you. it looks like it was worse than originally reported. hackers stole data from three times the number of taxpayers previously thought. all in all, 344,000 people are now potential victims here. the agency says it thinks the hackers will try to use victims' data to collect tax refunds in next year. the irs will try to offer some protections. the u.s. military is about to ramp up the use of drones by as much as 50%. the pentagon says it will happen over the next several years. top brass say that it will use both army and civilian contractors to do the work up until now mostly confined to the air force. the suggest -- the decision suggests two big questions are here -- how will the pentagon pay for additional patrols. also, how will the military sort out the growing amount of data that will start pouring in? we'll learn how many are expected to fly out of town for labor day. last year, an estimated 14 million people flew on u.s. airlines during the seven day labor day travel period. it's a first for the united states armed forces as well as the women enlisted. why we could see female rangers on the front lines by the end of the week. you have heard his plan on immigration. now we're breaking it down in terms of the price tag for you. a live report on one of the major issues taking hold in decision 2016. another glass ceiling broken. two women have made history by successfully completing the army's elite rangers school. this is one of the toughest combat training courses in the world. we don't know their name, the army is telling us they're west point trained officers. they will be among 96 soldiers who graduate from ft. benning in georgia. however, they won't be allowed to apply for roles in the elite special operations force. that remains closed off to women. but good for them. breaking new ground. that is a tough course. as someone who comes from an army family i have conscious and breathing when he went to the hospital. still no word from police on suspects at this hour. as police look for evidence in the overnight in frederick douglass where this took place. the shooting in northeast happened in the 1300 block on florida avenue. we don't have a word on suspects but the victim was conscious and breathing when they got to him. but already this year, 94 homicides so far compared to about 72 last year around this same time period. d.c. police appealing for the public to really come forward and talk to them, give them any information they can to help better. 95 north at courthouse road, got the crash on the shoulder. it was a semi in the center lane. still going pretty slowly as you're headed northbound. the problem is in fredericksburg, northbound here after stafford as you approach triangle. after that, it's not so bad. the travel times are fairly good from quantico northbound. 70 south, to clarksburg and then some red line delays to shady grove from earlier delays. new this morning, d.c. police investigating two shootings that happened hours ago. one on florida avenue in southeast d.c., a man was shot on frederick douglas place. molette green has more on the violent night. she is at police headquarters. molette? >> reporter: yeah, aaron, two shootings as you mentioned coming just hours after the police chief's latest appeal to the public to help put an end to this wave of violence in the city. d.c. police telling us the man shot in southeast was hit in the stomach, was conscious and was breathing when he went to the hospital. no word on suspects. police scoured that scene there in southeast d.c., frederick douglas place where all of this happened. then around the same time, another shooting in northeast on florida avenue. that victim was conscious and breathing when they found him. we had a chance to look over the numbers that d.c. police put out about the numbers of murders this year alone. 94 in the capital city compared to 72 last year around the same time. d.c. police say they have made some progress in arresting suspects. >> well, we'll check in with molette throughout the hour. police in northwest d.c. put out new surveillance video. take a look at your screen here. this is related to a deadly shooting. the six different men with all persons of interest in a shooting that happened on 7th street northwest last weekend. police say a gunfight broke out by the shaw metro station. matt shlonsky was caught in the middle of it and died. if you think you recognize any of the men in the video, call d.c. police. i'm meagan fitzgerald at the live desk. we are following a developing story out of bangkok. officials just released images of a suspect in monday's deadly bombing at a shrine. thank you. 6:04. developing in indonesia, the search and rescue team did reach the site of the plane crash today. crews uncovered the black box there and that should help determine what caused it to go down. all 54 people on board died. thundershowers in china complicating efforts from the deadly warehouse explosions. teams specializing in handling hazardous chemicals are scrambling to clean up that blast site. 700 tons of sodium cyanide were stored at the warehouse when it exploded last week. almost 70 others are still missing. we are told at least one person who works for the company that owns that warehouse has been arrested. today, more testimony expected in the murder trial of an oxon hill hotel manager. prince george's county police say deandre weems attempted to rob the clarion hotel two years ago. they say jesse chavez tried to stop him and weems shot him in the chest. chavez died. the hotel worker who weems threatened with a gun testified yesterday. chavez's mother could take the stand during the trial. and in another courtroom, a suspect in the murder of a mary washington student will be arraigned. today, steven briel will head back to court in fredericksburg. he strangled grace mann back in april, police say. they were both students at the university. we are learning that his lawyer may ask for a mental health examination. you can check out the nbc washington app for updates later this morning as we continue to learn more. and developing this morning, a former fairfax county police officer is behind bars on murder charges. adam torres turned himself in last night after a grand jury charged him in the death of john geer. he was on the job when he shot and killed geer two years ago. torres said that deer gear was reaching for a gun. coming up, derrick ward has more on why he'll stay in jail for a while. a controversial vote for lawmakers in frederick county, maryland. the county will vote on whether to revoke the all -- english only ordinance. that law requires county business to be conducted in english. supporters of the english only law say that it allows the county to avoid printing documents in multiple languages which saves money. several council members said there's no evidence to support that. the presidential candidates in iowa continue today. marco rubio and john kasich will take voters' questions. they had strong performances at the first republican debate. the state department says as many as 305 of hillary clinton's private e-mails may have included classified information. that's about 5% of the e-mails the state department has sifted through so far. the revelation came after clinton said in an iowa radio interview she never sent or received any e-mails on her private server that had information clearly marked classified. a 1-year-old left home alone. so what does the little tyke do? calls 911, of course. that story and a recent rash of child neglect cases in prince william county. this morning, hundreds of troops are now pitching in to put out the exploding wildfires in washington state. and an ava and i needed a little vacay. but we needed to watch our spending. meaning i needed to watch nikki. she's watching "news4 today." >> in prince william county, police had to deal with three child neglect cases this past weekend. police arrested a 56-year-old woman in woodbridge after she left a 1-year-old baby at home. and in nokesville, a suspected drunk driver was arrested with a 12-year-old family member inside the car sunday night. a 24-year-old was charged with felony child neglect after falling asleep and letting a 3-year-old wander into the street. that happened in dale city. right now, wildfires continue to rage across near an area where several resorts are located in washington. this video was shot from a boat on lake chelan. you can see how close they are to the buildings along the shore. the fire has already charred more than 155 square miles and destroyed around 75 homes and businesses. about 2,600 firefighters are battling the wildfire. they're trying to establish a line to keep the flames from reaching downtown chelan. now, a mandatory evacuation older remains in effect story out of wichita, kansas. a man is in custody after he brought an improvised explosive device to a woman's clinic that provides abortions. now, on monday, police say an on-site security guard inspected the backpack and they found that explosive device along with some knives. the building was evacuated. no one was injured. back to you. this is a mild mannered type of man. he loved his kids with a powerful love. that's what he was on his way to do. >> d.c. family distraught over a husband and father who was stabbed to death. we first told you about this stabbing last week. d.c. police say hector felix stabbed eric lee smith in the heart at a bus stop on "h" street northeast. this happened after smith bumped a little girl with his bag. you heard from smith's widow there. here's what his children had to say. >> i'm going to miss him. i'm just going to give him a big old embrace. >> he was a good dad. he is a good dad. he's a great dad. outstanding dad. outstanding father. >> smith's family says they're now struggling to pay for his funeral. they started a gofundme page. we put a link to that on the nbc washington app. we did check for you this morning, it's only raised about $190 so far. well, a father facing murder charges for the death of his 5 week old son. police arrested 28-year-old robert smith sr. yesterday. news4 cameras were there when police responded to the home on 9th street northwest. it was for an unconscious baby at the time and the child's death we're told was suspicious. the infant died from blunt force injuries. closing arguments start in a few hours in the case of a white north carolina police officer. officer randall kerik faces voluntary manslaughter charges. the officer didn't need to kill jonathan ferrell they say in 2014. they say he feared for his life when he responded to the breaking and entering call. new debate this morning over how to keep the six police officers who face charges in the death of freddie gray. he died in april after a spinal injury he somehow got during this arrest. now "the baltimore sun" reports that a defense attorney for one of the officers filed a series of subpoenas that would force prosecutors and a medical examiner to attend hears as witnesses. doing that could get them sequestered from the rest of the case. this afternoon, a sitting congressman is headed to court to fight charges he used grants and charitable donations to replay -- to repay a $1 million campaign loan. pennsylvania congressman fatah is an 11-term democrat. prosecutors say he funneled money to pay for his son's student loans. fatah's son is under indictment in a separate but related case. in "news4 your health" this morning, drinking coffee may help people fighting colon cancer. researchers in boston say stage 3 colon cancer patients who drink four or more cups of coffee a day were less likely to die from the disease. the new study says that patients who drink coffee are less likely to have the cancer return. cancer experts say the study needs some more research. today the fda will make their final decision about that little pink pill some call the female viagra. flibanserin works in the brain to increase the woman's desire to have sex. this drug would help women with an extremely low libido. that pill could be sold if the manufacturer limited the pill's risk. the fda has rejected the pill twice since 2010. well, this next story is for any parent who's having trouble getting your little one to go to sleep. apparently there's a new children's book that promises it can help. in fact, this swedish book says it will put your child to sleep in minutes. it is called "the rabbit who wants to fall asleep." the author says it works by using psychological and positive reinforcement techniques to promote relaxation and to induce sleep. now, the "today" show is going to put this to the test. tune in to find out if this book really works. it's right here at 7:00 on nbc4. we'll find out if you is showing some showers here, west virginia and up into western pennsylvania. the bulk of this is staying well to our west here for the morning hours. but eventually, leading edge of this, now coming into the southern shenandoah valley. that may make its way closer to winchester, perhaps martinsburg and warrenton. even into culpepper over the next few hours. but the greater chance is later this afternoon as temperatures climb. still mid 70s, partly sunny noontime. warm and humid, the mid 80s. not as hot as yesterday by 2:00 or 3:00. then those maybe passing showers and thundershowers coming into the metro area around 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. the sticky humidity with us now. it will only get more uncomfortable to oppressive on wednesday and thursday. the humidity will be increasing. temperatures though will not. we'll be in the upper 80s each afternoon. increasing chance though of an afternoon storm on wednesday. might get a morning shower but a greater chance of midday showers on thursday. and then finally a break from the humidity on friday. partly cloudy, mid 80s. more humid over the weekend, but not uncomfortably sew. another chance of storms coming in on monday. got a new model run coming in now with new hour by hour timing for those storms later today. i'll show you that coming up at 6:31. melissa has a new crash now. what's going on with that? >> brand-new crash in gainesville, at linton hall road. this just popped up here. we also again have that accident from earlier in purr sillville. eastbound 9 is blocked because of that accident. sounds like it's serious, police directing folks through the westbound lanes to get eastbound. taking a look at 95 here in virginia, you can see getting a little bit better here. 95 northbound from fredericksburg to stafford, now we're going about 38 miles per hour this morning. 66, no major problems into town or out of town. looking pretty typical right now. b.w. parkway, 95, 29, everything here nice and green. top of the beltway just a tad slow, outer loop approaching georgia. beltway at landover road, no major issues. back in ten minutes. 6:24 now. today, opening statements start in the trial of a teenager charged with rape in new hampshire. 19-year-old owen labrie is charged with raping a 15-year-old freshman. he said he's not guilty. prosecutors say he allegedly assaulted the girl on the concord campus of the elite st. paul's school. it happened days before he graduated. one man has died, another remains in critical condition after a suicide attempt at the university of honolulu. the 24-year-old man was trying to bring in a teenager who was on a window ledge. that ledge was on the 14th floor of a dormitory building there. both men fell to the ground. the teenager remains in critical condition. this happened on sunday. neither of the young people were students at the university. the man convicted of the boston marathon bombing is now asking for a new trial outside of boston. lawyers for dzhokhar tsarnaev say quote, continuous and unrelenting publicity surrounding the bombing meant jurors in boston could not be impartial. the lawyers say jurors were also inundated with social media posts. he was convicted of 30 federal charges and he has been sentenced to death. we have an update for you now on the american dentist accused of an illegal killing a -- the illegal killing of a lion in africa. his office has reopened in minnesota without him. you can see they posted a security guard outside. the office put out a letter saying dr. walter palmer was not on site and employees had no comment. it's been closed for about a month since palmer killed the lion, cecil, in zimbabwe. today chelsea manning has a hearing that could send her to solitary confinement. she was found guilty of leaking governments to wikileaks. manning is serving 35 years in prison now. she is accused of having prohibited property in prison including the "vanity fair" issue with caitlyn jenner on the cover. college is a time of transition and change for a lot of students and that can mean problems with mental health. >> i started to cry and then my -- then the palms of my hands sweat. then i started all this august here. we're more than halfway through the month. we have had only had half an inch in the metro area. right now getting showers here in west virginia and western pennsylvania. this going to stay well west of us for the morning hours. new model run coming in is going to be showing that this rain coming into the central shenandoah valley may turn into thundershowers by 1:00. near luray and winchester, then they're breaking up as they move further north and another round popping up around 2:00 or 3:00. a diminishing chancearound the metro area. this is a brand-new short range model run showing those thundershowers may be continuing in the mountains, perhaps into the early evening hours. otherwise, it should stay dry around the metro area, but have the umbrella handy anyway. melissa has an update on a crash we had earlier. >> update on the crash in purcellville. i got off the phone with police. charlestown pike route 9 at berlin turnpike, all lanes now open. no lanes are blocked at any point. again, this morning here. lee highway at linton hall road, we have that situation there in gainesville with the blockage of the intersection. headed inbound there on 95, northbound as you're headed out of frederick. fredericksburg i should say. quite slow here as you're headed northbound, going 26 miles per hour. those delays now stretching all the way up into triangle. we had some road work that was late clearing and then that accident that's out of the way, but still slowing things just a bit. looking over prince george's county, overall no major problems there and beltway at good luck road, live picture for you outer loop more volume than the inner loop. >> thank you. it's 6:32 right now. we turn to a developing story this morning. a former fairfax county police officer is on the other side of the law. adam torres waking up in jail after a grand jury charged him with murder in the death of john geer. news4's derrick ward has more on this case. good morning. >> reporter: good morning again, aaron. well, this case does indeed carry a second degree murder charge. that could carry from five to 40 years in jail for officer torres. he was let go from theers forc the 31st and in the interim the charges were brought by the special grand jury. it stems from the incident in august of 2013. there was a domestic call at john geer's home and it turned into a standoff of sorts with geer standing in his doorway. hands above his head for most of the time. a police negotiator had begun to talk to geer and about 40 seconds -- 40 minutes in to that exchange is when the gunshot was fired. officer torres said he saw geer make a move toward his waist band, but others had testified that geer's hands were indeed above his head. now a grand jury found that there was enough there to bring the second degree murder charge. now fairfax county has already agreed to pay $2.9 million to geer's daughters in a settlement of a wrongful death suit brought earlier. live outside fairfax county police headquarter, derrick ward, news4. a 25-year-old man will survive after one of their officers shot him on tory loop in woodbridge. officers first went to a home there last night for some sort of domestic disturbance between a mother and her son. while an officer was speaking with the more, police say the son came at the officer with a knife. police shot him. he and his mother are both in the hospital now. the mother's injuries are not related to the shooting. new details from investigators about a huge fire from the eastern shore of maryland. we first told you yesterday that this one levelled this building at washington college in chesteown. the maryland state fire marshal's office saying it started in a container for used up cigarettes. they say video shows that it spread to mulch, plants, finally the building. no one was hurt in that fire. investigators say it caused $3.5 million worth of damage. we know now the name of the teenager killed in the off road vehicle crash on saturday. police say 17-year-old lester goodwine died when he crashed the utv on the school athletic field this happened behind the stephen decatur school. police said the crash is still under investigation. 6:35. this morning we are learning about funeral arrangements for a man a lot of us knew as a real life superhero. lenny robinson who was known as the route 29 batman was killed on sunday. he dressed up as the caped crusader for charity events and to visit sick kids. a woman who partnered with him said he made a lot of kids very happy. >> he would electrify the room. like it lit up. and kids would run to him and he would open up his big cape and the kids would gather underneath it. like he protected them. >> a great way to be this morning. new details about the massive irs data breach we have been following for you. it looks like it was worse than originally reported. hackers stole data from three times the number of taxpayers previously thought. all in all, 344,000 people are now potential victims here. the agency says it thinks the hackers will try to use victims' data to collect tax refunds in next year. the irs will try to offer some protections. the u.s. military is about to ramp up the use of drones by as much as 50%. the pentagon says it will happen over the next several years. top brass say that it will use both army and civilian contractors to do the work up until now mostly confined to the air force. the suggest -- the decision suggests two big questions are here -- how will the pentagon pay for additional patrols. also, how will the military sort out the growing amount of data that will start pouring in? we'll learn how many are expected to fly out of town for labor day. last year, an estimated 14 million people flew on u.s. airlines during the seven day labor day travel period. it's a first for the united states armed forces as well as the women enlisted. why we could see female rangers on the front lines by the end of the week. you have heard his plan on immigration. now we're breaking it down in terms of the price tag for you. a live report on one of the major issues taking hold in decision 2016. another glass ceiling broken. two women have made history by successfully completing the army's elite rangers school. this is one of the toughest combat training courses in the world. we don't know their name, the army is telling us they're west point trained officers. they will be among 96 soldiers who graduate from ft. benning in georgia. however, they won't be allowed to voters. both had by most accounts pretty strong performances at the first republican debate. donald trump is back on the trail today, just as brand-new poll numbers come from cnn/orc. he's the undisputed front-runners among republicans but he's facing questions about the cost of his immigration plans. nbc's hallie jackson will talk more about this. walk us through the plan and what it might cost. >> reporter: because we have seen so much action on the campaign trail and so much reaction to the proposed immigration plan. sooff so -- so you have candidates going on the attack, including jeb bush. he said it's not realistic. but others, like carly fiorina and scott walker embracing parts of trump's proposal. but all of this as you alluded to is raising new questions about how much it included classified information. now, that is about 5% of the e-mails that have been looked through so far. it came after hillary clinton said in a radio interview she never sent or received e-mails that had information clearly marked class if ied. two men are recovering from separate shootings in the district. we're working to learn more about another violent night in d.c. someone shot a man on florida avenue northeast and the other man was taken to the hospital after he was shot on frederick douglass place southeast. news4's molette green is live outside the d.c. headquarters to tell us how police are investigating all the crimes. good morning. >> reporter: aaron, good morning. the gunfire rang out at about the same time. the police tell us that man was shot in the stomach. he was conscious and breathing when he went to the hospital. still no word from police on suspects at this hour. as police look for evidence in the overnight in frederick douglass where this took place. the shooting in northeast happened in the 1300 block on florida avenue. we don't have a word on suspects but the victim was conscious and breathing when they got to him. but already this year, 94 homicides so far compared to about 72 last year around this same time period. d.c. police appealing for the public to really come forward and talk to them, give them any information they can to help them solve these crimes and to cut down on the rash of crime in the district. i'm molette green, live outside d.c. police headquarters. back to you. >> thank you. new video related to a deadly shooting in northwest washington. take a look at your screen right here. police say these men are all persons of interest in the shooting near the shaw metro station this past weekend. d.c. police believe a gun fight broke out there. american university graduate matt shlonsky was caught in the middle of it and died. there are six persons of interest in the video. if you recognize any of them, call d.c. police. i'm meagan fitzgerald at the live desk. we're following a developing story out of bangkok. officials just released images of a suspect in monday's deadly bombing at a shrine. now, thai police are looking for this man seen wearing a backpack and yellow shirt. the images were captured from television footage near the shrine. the explosionilled 22 people including nine foreigners. 120 others are injured. officials say in a separate incident today, man threw a small explosive from a bridge, it landed in the water. no one was injured. >> thank you, meagan. and turning to our radar, saw a lot of blue and green on the screen. >> that means it's drifting this way and we're going to have to deal with a lot of that later. >> what's it bringing? >> we do need it. a lot of the lawns are looking like the gobi desert. we have only had half an inch of rain in august in the metro area. that moving blue and green, that's in west virginia and heavier downpours in western pennsylvania. leading edge of this coming up the shenandoah valley. a few sprinkles. maybe near luray or winchester in the next few hours. elsewhere, haze and humidity hanging in the air this morning. thank you. a developing story in indonesia now. army official there said the search and rescue team did reach the site of the plane crash. crews were able to recover the black box there and that should help determine what caused the plane to crash. it went missing two days ago in bad weather. all 54 people on board died. thunderstorms in china complicating efforts in the deadly warehouse explosion. crews are scrambling now to clean up that blast site. there were more than 700 tons of a deadly chemical, sodium cyanide, stored at this warehouse. at least 114 people died, another 70 still missing. the cause of the explosion is under investigation still. we're told at least one person who works for that company that owns the warehouse has been arrested. another development at metro to tell you about. following that derailment at the smithsonian station earlier this month. the metro board will meet september 3rd to figure out what to do next. that's a week earlier than originally planned. we told you the metro's general manager has leltionz than -- less than a week to submit a report. he has to answer why it wasn't fixed a month after a problem was noted. 4 things
