weather deck. is it warm out there? >> it's nice out here. it's not too humid. the sun is shining. hazy, high thin clouds. high temperatures will warm into the low 90s. so, starting off this morning, we are looking at nice conditions across the area. as we take a look at your morning planner, sky cast 4, you can see we are looking at mostly sunny skies. here is the midday planner, temperatures are going to warm into the 80s, upper 80s for the afternoon suburbs. low 90s for some of us. howard county is under a code orange air quality alert this morning. that means elderly, children, heart or lung issues take it easy. most of us are fine with code yellow air quality. i have to say wharks is nice out here, there's a bit of a breeze. the humidity starts to creep into the area tomorrow. coming up, i'm going to let you know when the humidity will be the worse for the upcoming workweek. >> thank you, amelia. new this morning, a tragic disaster during a camping trip. two children are dead after a tree limb fell on their tent while they were sleeping. park officials say they don't know why the limb fell yesterday. weather was not a factor. they warned campers to be aware of their surroundings, even in designated camp sights. attempted abduction marks the fifth attack in a five-mile radius. the most recent happened thursday night in the parking lot of an apartment complex. megan fitzgerald reports on how it's forcing some women to change their routine. >> reporter: there's nothing like feeling secure in your own community. >> we are comfortable. we feel safe in our neighborhood. >> reporter: that sense of safety is starting to fade, at least for some. >> i hate the fact this is happening in arlington. >> reporter: on thursday night, near the 800 block of south frederick, police have their fifth attempted sex assault. a woman was walking to her apartment when she was grabbed and dragged into the woods. >> she continues to scream, hits him, it scares him audiotape. >> reporter: daniel murray is the deputy police. the woman fought back and the man took off. >> we have never had a problem like this. >> reporter: it's an issue that caused some women to alter their routine. >> i won't go out at night by myself, not at all. >> reporter: others are more aware. >> that was megan fitzgerald reporting. an intoxicated man ripped a gas pump off the base in monrovia. police called in fire rescue to contain the gas spill before anything too terrible happens. right now, firefighters are using all they have to put out three wildfires in washington state. seven homes are destroyed. evacuations started. first responders say lightning sparked at least one of the fires there. it's too windy to attack from the sky. they are low on resources because of so many wildfires in parts of the region. federal prosecutors say virginia governor, bob mcdonal should go to prison while appealing. they have not responded to the lawyer's motion that he remain free during the appeals process. prosecutors say that the former governor no longer deserves bail. earlier this week, a court declined to reconsider his case. he is now headed to the supreme court. a jury convicted him and his wife for accepting money from a wealthy businessman in exchange for favors. today, you can take the kids to a back-to-school fair in the district. the greater washington urban league and marshall center is putting it on. it's at 11:00 at the thurgood marshall center. you have a chance for free school supplies tomorrow. go the the community center in southeast d.c. between noon and 5:00 to be part of the back-to-school bash. there's going to be free food and live music. teachers are helpi ining teachers no loudoun county. they donated use zed books, posters and other classroom supplies. new teachers are able to pick up the hand-me-downs at orientation. >> being able to share the new materials for my classroom is cool. it's exciting. i'm thankful for them to say the least. >> about 700 teachers will be new. classes in loudoun begin a week before labor day on august 31st. kids are impressionable, right? what do you think happened when this woman taught a girl here how to steal a bottle of liquor. this is down in pembroke park in florida. you see the woman show the girl which bottle of tequila to take. she grabs the bottle and hides it behind her back. you see her going out the front door of the store. the woman blocked the clerk's view. she's walking away here. she blocks the clerk. employee confronted the woman. she told the employee the girl didn't steal anything. police looking for this woman now. pretty sad. >> yeah. a daily newspaper in oregon is hiring for a new position that doesn't require a journalism degree. they are looking for a marijuana reviewer. they are looking for experience in the variety of strains and products available. pot becomes legal to buy in oregon in october. a new way to block cravings and not just for food. addictive behavior recently published a study that says, and you will never guess, playing tetris for three minutes can shrink cravings by 20%. these are the results they expected. they say cravings come when you imagine something. it's hard to let your mind wonder when you are focused on where to put the next tetris pieces. i know about that all too well. >> what if it's for three hours? what is live at the washington humane society in northeast with more on how to help clear the shelters today. hey, wendy. >> hey, adam. hay, kristin. there's fred over there running around. we have more than 20 shelters. i'm at the washington humane society on new york avenue in washington, d.c. we have 20 shelters participating. joining me is lauren, the director of rehoming. what happens if they come today to adopt? what is the process? >> we are going to see them from 12:00 to 7:00. they can view the animals. for dogs, we ask them to sign up for a meet and greet. a behavior staff comes in. learn the history, why did it come to us. at that time, they fill out a questionnaire. we have a questionnaire that starts a conversation. what are you looking for in an animal. at that time, we hopefully send them on their merry way. we have 175 animals available for adoption, well over 50 dogs. we have animal that is come in a variety of ways. strays picked up by animal control officers and they are ready go. they are spayed and neutered, microchipped and looking for that forever home. we want you to come out and find your newest family member. let's work together to find them homes. >> reporter: i love it. can you do that in a day? can you connect with an animal in a day, in one meet sng. >> it's pretty impressive to see the connections people can make, absolutely. >> we don't want people forced into it. if it's not the right match, it's okay. we have a variety of animals. there are other organizations participating. we want to make sure it is the right match and sticks. we want to keep them in their homes. let's have a conversation. come prepared with questions. if you don't have an idea of the particular kind of animal, look, breed, whatever, that's okay. you may fall in make that connection. you know, too, you have a dog and wendy has a kitty cat at home. stk dogs sounds like they are ready go. >> thanks, wendy. the secret service is preparing to go on a hiring spree right now. according to reuters, the agency will hire 1100 new officers and agents over the next five years. it would be the biggest increase in staff at the secret service in more than a decade. the hiring campaign is in response to anticipated growth as well as recommendations after a fence jumper made it into the white house last year. reuters reports the hiring is going to start in october. that massive data breach triggered a class action lawsuit. a formal federal worker fined them. negligent. technology is taking over. you have heard it before. now, you are going to see it in a virginia school. the high school is tearing down hundreds of lockers to make room for charging stations. the school will install benches with outlets. they have the option to use a locker. the school plans to transform the classrooms to be more charge friendly as well. this is some incredible video. a massive tractor trailer crash brought the new jersey turnpike to a standstill wednesday. a couple from australia helped keep it from turning deadly. they were visiting relatives here in the state. they just left d.c. they were heading north on the turnpike wednesday when they saw a rig burning. the driver jumped out and ran across the road on fire. wilson didn't hesitate to help them. >> holding my hand. he was in shock. he was saying, i have nowhere to go. i couldn't go anywhere because, obviously, he was trapped. >> the truck driver said he didn't think dropping to the ground would do any good. they pulled off his burning clothes and stayed with him until an ambulance arrived. frightening scene there. >> how hot is it going to get? >> upper 80s and low 90s. it's a summer day out there. for the most part, we are looking at similar weather to continue tomorrow. a little warmer and humid as well. for the most part, this weekend looking good as far as the weather is concerned. minor chances for storms for upcoming work. an isolated late day thunderstorm monday and tuesday. that chance, around the i-81 corridor. the best chance of storms thursday into friday. the most muggy time period will be tuesday through thursday. it will feel oppressive when you factor in the humidity. air quality alert for howard counties. children, elderly, heart and lung disease, if you are impacted by that, limit your activity outdoors with a code orange. everybody else under a code yellow. that means most of us are going to be fine. tomorrow, everybody will be code yellow. overall, the weather outlook heading to the fairs, the prince george's county fair. hot. bring water. heading to the pool, you will need sunscreen. keep in mind, there is the code orange air quality alert in effect today. current temperatures in the 70s. 75 in annapolis. easton, 77 and la ray 70. a hazy sunshine right now. that will be the case throughout the day. more sunshine for the afternoon hours. all in all, it will shape up to be mostly sunny. the high temperature of 91 at 4:00 this evening. 7:00 temperature 86. as the sun goes down, it will be comfortable. similar to yesterday. if you are heading down to richmond for redskins fan appreciation day that runs from 11:30 to 4:30. temperatures in richmond, near 90. sunshine and wind. lows tonight dip into the 60s in the suburbs. washington and annapolis, low temperatures in the low 70s. tomorrow, highs in the low to mid-90s. isolated mountain storm possible. for most of us this weekend will be completely dry. right into the beginning of the workweek. 95 for a high on monday. 94 on tuesday. really noticing the humidity tuesday, wednesday and thursday. cold front moves through the area later in the day on thursday. this will bring the potential for storms. some could be strong to severe because of how hot and humid cafe. tokyo taking it a step further. the all right, so brace yourself for this one. tokyo just opened its first snake cafe. >> huh? >> yeah, where you can enjoy, enjoy the company of the slithering creatures while you sip on an iced latte. why not? the cafe's owners want people to better understand snakes. they are worth saving and protecting for future generations. personally, i enjoy my coffee without a snake in the room. >> if snakes are your thing, you have a place to go. it's a story of incredible surviv survival. a california man attacked bay bear and lived to tell the tale. >> officials are looking for that bear. this morning, the survival says his training from the vietnam war saved his life. we have the story. >> i jumped in the van. when i walked in, blood all over me. they go, oh, my god, what happened to you? i said i got attacked by a bear. >> reporter: he relived his arrival at the hospital after nearly being mauled to death during a savage bear attack. he stepped out the back door and came face-to-face with the bear. i yelled, hey get out of here. he continued to come toward me. there was a plastic pot of dirt and i hit him. >> reporter: it left the attacking bear unphased. he planted down. >> i could hear the crunching, like that, when he bit down on it. that's why i was trying to hit him again. >> reporter: he kicked the bear off of him, using survival tactics he learned during his time in the marine corps. >> they tell you to remove the word can't from your vocabulary. don't ever say that word again. then say they take the pain. take the pain. >> reporter: he said the pain didn't kick in until this morning, but he's been through worse rating it a seven out of ten on the scale. he says he wouldn't have survived the encounter without a little help. his pint-sized dog never once left his side. >> he distracted that bear long enough that i could stand-up on my feet and get out of there. he was the hero. he saved me. >> reporter: a true story of endurance and strength. >> never give up. never stop fighting. if i would have stopped fighting, i wouldn't be here today doing this interview. >> wow. incredible story there. coming up, a police officer in a struggle for his gun and it goes off. how the situation ended with one person in critical condition. breaking news out of china. search crews find a survivor in the rubble from of us stay dry this weekend. temperatures right now low to mid-70s. 75 in leesburg. 74 in washington. camp springs coming in at 76 degrees. here is how we will warm up into the afternoon hours. by noon, 84. we will hit the high at 90 to 91 degrees. today marks day one of a streak of temperatures hitting 90 degrees or higher. that continues until thursday. now, coming up in about ten minutes, the latest on storm chances, when you will be dealing with rain into the upcoming workweek. details of a deadly shooting overnight are developing right now. d.c. police say someone shot a man three times on first street near p in northwest and he died shortly after 1:00 this morning. no one has been arrested at this point. keep in mind, if you need to drive in this area, know that police have some of the roads closed at this time. we will let you know when everything opens back up. new this morning, prince george's county police say an officer shot a suspect who tried to reach for his gun. that suspect is in critical condition this morning. it happened on walker mill road in capital heights last night. around 11:00, an officer heard a car crash. when he arrived, a man was running from the scene. the officer caught up with the suspect. according to police, the man tried to take the officer's gun. a struggle follows. a man stabbed another to death. monday, he'll be in court. today, we told you about 57-year-old hector felix's arrest last night. he got into an argument with eric smith and attacked him. they tried to save smith and died at the hospital. victims of a frightening attack are outraged with what happened to their attacker after he got arrested. he randomly asauled six people. jackie bensen reports why the man is already back on the street. >> reporter: victims of the violent, random attack near first and k street about 5:00 p.m. wednesday are shocked to learn the man arrested near the cnn loadi ining dock, allen mar was given a misdemeanor citation for simple assault and released back on the street. victim four says she can't believe the person who punched her in the face was back on the street within hours. >> one of the thing that is shocked me, i never understood. it's very hard to find it. this person just out of the blue hits people in the face. >> reporter: the police report says other victims suffers lacerations and needed medical treatment at the scene. victim four says the man's behavior was violent after he was arrested. >> we could identify him in the back of a police truck. flailing and screaming. it seemed like he had no idea why he was in the truck. he couldn't remember what had happened. >> that was jackie bensen reporting. a representative tells news 4 they are looking into the situation. breaking news to tell you about. another survivor out of a chinese warehouse that exploded wednesday. they pulled a firefighter from the debris. he was trapped more than 32 hours. there's a new hoarder for a massive evacuation. officials con fefirm the presen of chemicals. 21 firefighters died in the explosion. some first responders are missing and more than 720 people are hurt. angry relatives of some of the missing first responders tried to push their way into a news conference this morning. they want to know what happened to their loved ones. officials locked the doors for the remainder of the update. fan appreciation day for the redskins. you can watch the team practice in richmond this morning. training camp gates open at 11:30 and practice starts at 1:35. after practice, the players and coaches sign autographs and take pictures. tomorrow is the last day of training camp. coming up new, people jumping for their lives to escape flames on a ferry. what officials were able to do in this incredible humane society. i'm going to tell you how easy and free it is to get a new pet. new this morning, an incredible rescue from a burning passenger ferry in the philippin philippines. look at that fire. you can see people trying to get off the boat. more than 500 people were on board. there they are. some of them trying to climb down. the coast guard, right now, looking into what started the fire. >> wow! >> first responders that can fill a number of roles. there's an argument right now in alexandria about how to achieve that. the fire chief wants paramedics certified as firefighters and firefighters to get training in advanced life support and save people in crisis. the president of a group representing paramedics says this will waste money and make the quality of service worse. >> these are sole service medics or medic specialists. we are changing it to a system where we have one medic and one firefighter and emt. they may or may not want to be there. >> most calls are for emergency issues, not fires. alexandria's fire chief says it is used in arlington and fairfax. we may be a step closer to a faster, safer way to get in and out of the district. they made it through a federal, environmental review. about 70,000 of us krost the anacostia every day. the project involves expanding south capital street with new approval, d-dot can move ahead with selecting a design and build team as soon as next year. the mayor committed more than $500 million to the project over the next six years. you will ♪ ♪ us something new on your monday morning commute if you take metro. the 7000 series cars will start rolling on the green line. the blue, red and orange lines already have the cars in service. metro plans to buy 750 of them. so far, only 52 have been delivered. 9:41 right room a couple minutes ago. metro said a person is in the hospital after falling on to the track at the silver spring station. it happened around 2:00 this morning. there were not any trains headed weekend. it's adopt force one out into the community. we have various business partners and public areas that we frequent. people can adopt animals straight from the vehicle. today, our animal in foster care are going to be in the vehicle. >> reporter: i just visited kitty city. some wonderful cats in there. they all seem to be getting along. i thought they had cat fights, but they weren't. >> kitty city is big enough for them to get their own space if they need it. there's plenty of opportunity to climb and elevate themselves from other cats or people if they are overstimulated. create dynamic, enriching environments for your animal. >> reporter: two of my cats i rescued, they have since died. they were old. having two was wonderful. do you encourage people to take two if they can? >> on any other day, we have buy one get one cat. we highly encourage that. i brought a kitten home one time and wish i had two. it really eases the adjustment into the home. it allows them to entertain themselves. cats, like dogs require enrichment and play. many people don't realize that. if you come and adopt, we will set you up for success in the home and make sure it's a good next couple years in your lifetime. >> the adoption process, do they have to come back later, do they have to be vetted? what is that process going to be like? >> we have over 150 animals ready go today. they are spayed and neutered and microchipped. come ready to go home with an animal today. we hope it happens for every single one of them. >> thank you, lauren. again, it starts at noon here. go to feels five to ten degrees warmer than the thermometer says because of the mugginess. highs upper 80s, low 90s. 90 for a low in frederick and leesburg. 91 in washington. the river with a high of 83. grilling this evening looking good. might be warm at 5:00 p.m. you might want to hold off until 7:00 where temperatures drop from the upper 80s to mid-80s. it makes a world of difference. the
