>> reporter: dore reerng the judge says probable cause, this case is going to the grand jury. four felony murders, but so far, evidence of only one suspect. what happened to the money? it was may 14th that savva savopoulos and his wife amy and their 10-year-old son, phillip and housekeeper, vera figueroa were found murdered at the family home on woodland drive. a fire started in an apparent effort to cover up the crime. police say the murders happened after a $40,000 cash ransom payment. the murder suspect, darron wint was arrested with a group of people a week later. police recovered $30,000 of the ransom, including $3,000 in23,000 in money orders, $7,000 in cash and $1100 wint paid to an immigration lawyer two days after the murder. darron wint is linked to the quadruple murders by the dna found on an unanswer the piece of pizza at the crime scene. today, we learned about another match. in superior court, a police detective says wint's dna was found on a neon green safety vest located in the savopoulos porsche found the day of the murder and later torched in prince george's county. a fire was started in an apparent effort to cover up the crime. police say the murders happened after $40,000 in cash ransom money was delivered to the house. wint was arrested with a group of people about a week later. in court today, one of the savopoulos daughters. she was away at school when it happened. she sat in the front row of the courtroom. she had a stone in her hand, rubbing it with her fingers from time to time. she watched, she took notes, she heard it all. someone broke into the house at 5:56 the night before the murders. now back to you. >> we have much more on this story including links to our previous coverage in the nbc washington app. search mansion murder. a look at our weather now. wicked hot and sticky all over the place. temperatures feel like they are in the triple digits. a code orange air quality. means people are staying diners, which is what we probably would all love to be doing. doug, how long is this going to last, bro? >> reporter: that's right doreen. you know, this new fire lee grayson as it is being called will sit inside metro's rail control center but it is not an around the clock position. that's raising some concerns. when thick, acrid smoke filled the la payment plaza metro station, killing a passenger, a fire official was not immediately present here at metro's control center. now, that's changing. >> this position places a uniformed fire officer in the nerve center of the rail systems 40 hours a week to help coordinate emergency communication between metro and first responders. >> reporter: but the 40 hours per beek issue that is raising questions that only covers a sliver of metro's funding issues. >> not like i can reach all 900 of my people pick one and put them in there a very small group of people i can point to and pick. >> reporter: smoke and fire incidents seemingly sparking all over the metro system as of late, riders reacting. things just aren't the way they should be? >> reporter: doreen, montgomery county police say they were concerned right from the start they tell me this defendant is both a danger to the community and a risk of flight and indeed last week minute he was leased from jail on a judge's order, he disappeared. >> we felt it was necessary for us to track him down immediately. >> reporter: the montgomery county sheriff's department tracked down murder defendant dion sabotker who disappeared after judge gary bair last wednesday ordered him released an electronically mop toward. mike. concerns were would we have another tragedy in the community? concern where would there be a tragedy involving a law enforcement officer an agent? >> reporter: sobotker was charged in last december's murder of 26-year-old jonathan harris a successful kidney transplant recipient, who was strangled in his home and robbed. three suspects were arrested, including dion sabotker. he was being held in jail without bond but his trial was delayed until this coming december at the prosecutor's request. last wednesday judge bair ordered sobotker released and monitored on home detention saying -- police and prosecutors were concerned sobotker was leased from jail and got worse the next day when they found out he didn't report to get fitted with a gps and he was gone. >> we certainly took this as very serious. we have deputies who were assigned full time with the u.s. marshal's, capital area regional fugitive task force, deployed that team out most of the weekend. >> reporter: now, dion sabotker was finally arrested this morning. when he reported to pretrial services for his gps five days late. he will appear here in court tomorrow before the same judge, gary bair. prosecutors are asking that his bond be revoked answered edd and he be held in jail pending his trial in december. >> chris gordon, thanks. back to that breaking news in silver spring a marc train slammed into a truck there, rail service has been suspended as the investigation continues. shomari stone is on the scene. shomari? >> reporter: jim now, i'm here off linden lane and a tow truck removed the csx dump truck off of the tracks here. you can see it. this is on linden lane and will be getting out of here, trying to fig your out what exactly caused this crash. and basically, the driver was on it and he is okay. let me come back over here. the rails, well no trains are coming through here right now and there are 600 people on the drape right over there, they were headed to west virginia and they have air conditioning. they are going to be okay. no word when the train is going to continue to its destination. we will continue to bring you updates as they become available on facebook and twitter at nbc washington. live here in silver spring, shomari stone, news4. >> thanks shomari. shots fired on a major commuter route. one man sitting in the back of a car was hit. and tonight police are trying to find out who did unfolded on route 50 south of landover road. our bureau chief tracee wilkins, joins us with the investigation and why police believe there is no threat to the public with this. >> reporter: jim, they are trying to figure out who did it and why they did it. they have been talking to the folks in the vehicle the ones they can get to and they are telling them we were coming from d.c., didn't have any arguments with anyone. we don't know why someone would fire into our car. police are investigating that meantime, they are saying this they don't believe that anyone on that roadway has anything to worry about. >> they were at a location near d.c. and they stayed this there was no altercation, nobody got angry with them. >> reporter: it's what makes what happened next that much of a mystery. after 4er:00, a man suffering from gunshot wounds shows up at doctors hospital in lanham. >> they drove to doctors community hospital and dropped off an injured party. >> reporter: according to maryland state police, the man whose name has not been released, was riding in the back seat of a jaguar route 50 heading from d.c. 202 in landover when -- >> described as a black or dark blue honda accord drove past them and fired several shots into the vehicle. >> reporter: police say there were three men in the car but only one was struck in the leg and treated for non-life threatening injuries. why the shooting happened is still unclear. police are in the process of trying to interview everyone who was in the victim's vehicle. >> still trying to find everyone who was in the car, 'cause they dropped the passenger off and left. while there is limited suspect information they don't believe drivers on route 50 have reason to worry. >> no indication there is any kind of pattern and no indication that you know, it's anything like this may happen again. so i would say everybody can stay calm about it for sure. >> reporter: the passenger who was shot was treated and released from the hospital and again, is cooperating with the police. the specific section of the maryland state police handling this investigation, they have a facebook page they are going to be posting information and also, they would like to hear from drivers who may have been on the road when this happened, around 4 a.m. this morning. you can go to our washington nbc4 app and look up maryland state police to see if you can find any information that could help them out with this investigation. go to their facebook page. reporting live, i'm tracee wilkins, back to you in the stud grow. up next, donald trump refusing to back down after his con strollers comments about john mccain. we hit 98 yesterday, 97 for a high today. tomorrow, a l but still on the hot side. the heat index close to 100. a good pool day. but what you about th a new "washington post"/abc news poll puts donald trump on top with scott walker following in second. but that was before trump's comments about senator john mccain. >> he is not a war hero. operating room. >> reporter: dr. mcdonald performs more than 150 total knee replacements a year, six time morse than nearly every other knee surgeon in our area, that, he says, is one of the reasons his patients have so few complications. >> the only thing i do is hip and knee replacements. that's it. >> reporter: we found dr. mcdonald using this new propublica website which shows he has the lowest complication rate for knee replacement surgery in maryland and d.c., putting him in the top 2% in the nation. . there's almost no information available about the performance surgeons or about the performance hospitals. most of the ratings thought are about hospitals not sur john at all. >> reporter: why propublica's marshall allen says they have created something you have never seen before a website showing how often surgeons readmit parents after spine and neck fusions, gal blood and i prostate surgery and low-risk surgeries. we linked to the site on nbcwashington.com and through our nbc washington ann. there, you can look up the name of the procedure you need or type in the name of your doctor or surgeon to see how many complication they have had and how they compare to others working at the same hospital. pro-hub blick ka says its calculations take into account where the doctor works and the hospital's surgical staff and did not include the most complicated high-risk cases, like patients coming from an emergency room or a nursing home, prompting dr. marty mccarry at johns hopkins university to call it a ground breaking website. >> you can have a doctor that does great work working in a really tough setting, or could you have a doctor that doesn't do great work, working in a great hospital and this analysis fact in order those differences. >> reporter: dr. mccarry says he hopes the website will decrease surgical complications across-the-boardakros tcross the board because doctors didn't though how they were doing. >> they are competitive human beings a altruistic, you put a level playing field in front of doctors, they will outperform every time. good data analysis is the level playing field that we have needed in health care in order for door kochcompete on the right level. >> not everyone is convinced. while this data can point to trends very helpful for further study, it is difficult to make conclusions, for example, if you're just a patient going on the website. i think you need to have a little more information than just this data to choose a surgeon. >> reporter: dr. joshua jacobs with the american association of orthopedic surgeons cautions the website only looks at medicare patients and doesn't take into account the complexity of each case. >> for example the degree of deformity, the amount of scarring in the knee, the quality of bone, none of these things are really account for and they can have an impact on complication rates. >> reporter: why the doctor says the patients should use the website as part of their research to help them ask their doctor the right questions. >> it turns out the things most important in a patient doing well from surgery may have nothing to do with the name of an institution. it may have a lot more to do with certain operation. >> reporter: that's what we found at dr. mcdonald's hospital. he credits anne arundel in annapolis for focussing on one or two procedures and circulating reports so surgeons can compare notes. >> every month we get okay and talk about how doing the hospital, everyone is there. a small room, but it's packed about nurses physical therapists surgeons, an these anesthesiologists, discharge nurses. >> reporter: he wants to keep his complication rate at zero to get patients back on their feet as quick as possible. tisha thompson news4 >> reporter: dore reerng the judge says probable cause, this case is going to the grand jury. four felony murders, but so far, evidence of only one suspect. what happened to the money? it was may 14th that savva savopoulos and his wife amy and their 10-year-old son, phillip and housekeeper, vera figueroa were found murdered at the family home on woodland drive. a fire started in an apparent effort to cover up the crime. police say the murders happened after a $40,000 cash ransom payment. the murder suspect, darron wint was arrested with a group of people a week later. police recovered $30,000 of the ransom, including $3,000 in23,000 in money orders, $7,000 in cash and $1100 wint paid to an immigration lawyer two days after the murder. darron wint is linked to the quadruple murders by the dna found on an unanswer the piece of pizza at the crime scene. today, we learned about another match. in superior court, a police detective says wint's dna was found on a neon green safety vest located in the savopoulos porsche found the day of the murder and later torched in prince george's county. a fire was started in an apparent effort to cover up the crime. police say the murders happened after $40,000 in cash ransom money was delivered to the house. wint was arrested with a group of people about a week later. in court today, one of the savopoulos daughters. she was away at school when it happened. she sat in the front row of the courtroom. she had a stone in her hand, rubbing it with her fingers from time to time. she watched, she took notes, she heard it all. someone broke into the house at 5:56 the night before the murders. now back to you. >> we have much more on this story including links to our previous coverage in the nbc washington app. search mansion murder. a look at our weather now. wicked hot and sticky all over the place. temperatures feel like they are in the triple digits. a code orange air quality. means people are staying diners, which is what we probably would all love to be doing. doug, how long is this going to last, bro? >> reporter: that's right doreen. you know, this new fire lee grayson as it is being called will sit inside metro's rail control center but it is not an around the clock position. that's raising some concerns. when thick, acrid smoke filled the la payment plaza metro station, killing a passenger, a fire official was not immediately present here at metro's control center. now, that's changing. >> this position places a uniformed fire officer in the nerve center of the rail systems 40 hours a week to help coordinate emergency communication between metro and first responders. >> reporter: but the 40 hours per beek issue that is raising questions that only covers a sliver of metro's funding issues. >> not like i can reach all 900 of my people pick one and put them in there a very small group of people i can point to and pick. >> reporter: smoke and fire incidents seemingly sparking all over the metro system as of late, riders reacting. things just aren't the way they should be? >> reporter: doreen, montgomery county police say they were concerned right from the start they tell me this defendant is both a danger to the community and a risk of flight and indeed last week minute he was leased from jail on a judge's order, he disappeared. >> we felt it was necessary for us to track him down immediately. >> reporter: the montgomery county sheriff's department tracked down murder defendant dion sabotker who disappeared after judge gary bair last wednesday ordered him released an electronically mop toward. mike. concerns were would we have another tragedy in the community? concern where would there be a tragedy involving a law enforcement officer an agent? >> reporter: sobotker was charged in last december's murder of 26-year-old jonathan harris a successful kidney transplant recipient, who was strangled in his home and robbed. three suspects were arrested, including dion sabotker. he was being held in jail without bond but his trial was delayed until this coming december at the prosecutor's request. last wednesday judge bair ordered sobotker released and monitored on home detention saying -- police and prosecutors were concerned sobotker was leased from jail and got worse the next day when they found out he didn't report to get fitted with a gps and he was gone. >> we certainly took this as very serious. we have deputies who were assigned full time with the u.s. marshal's, capital area regional fugitive task force, deployed that team out most of the weekend. >> reporter: now, dion sabotker was finally arrested this morning. when he reported to pretrial services for his gps five days late. he will appear here in court tomorrow before the same judge, gary bair. prosecutors are asking that his bond be revoked answered edd and he be held in jail pending his trial in december. >> chris gordon, thanks. back to that breaking news in silver spring a marc train slammed into a truck there, rail service has been suspended as the investigation continues. shomari stone is on the scene. shomari? >> reporter: jim now, i'm here off linden lane and a tow truck removed the csx dump truck off of the tracks here. you can see it. this is on linden lane and will be getting out of here, trying to fig your out what exactly caused this crash. and basically, the driver was on it and he is okay. let me come back over here. the rails, well no trains are coming through here right now and there are 600 people on the drape right over there, they were headed to west virginia and they have air conditioning. they are going to be okay. no word when the train is going to continue to its destination. we will continue to bring you updates as they become available on facebook and twitter at nbc washington. live here in silver spring, shomari stone, news4. >> thanks shomari. shots fired on a major commuter route. one man sitting in the back of a car was hit. and tonight police are trying to find out who did unfolded on route 50 south of landover road. our bureau chief tracee wilkins, joins us with the investigation and why police believe there is no threat to the public with this. >> reporter: jim, they are trying to figure out who did it and why they did it. they have been talking to the folks in the vehicle the ones they can get to and they are telling them we were coming from d.c., didn't have any arguments with anyone. we don't know why someone would fire into our car. police are investigating that meantime, they are saying this they don't believe that anyone on that roadway has anything to worry about. >> they were at a location near d.c. and they stayed this there was no altercation, nobody got angry with them. >> reporter: it's what makes what happened next that much of a mystery. after 4er:00, a man suffering from gunshot wounds shows up at doctors hospital in lanham. >> they drove to doctors community hospital and dropped off an injured party. >> reporter: according to maryland state police, the man whose name has not been released, was riding in the back seat of a jaguar route 50 heading from d.c. 202 in landover when -- >> described as a black or dark blue honda accord drove past them and fired several shots into the vehicle. >> reporter: police say there were three men in the car but only one was struck in the leg and treated for non-life threatening injuries. why the shooting happened is still unclear. police are in the process of trying to interview everyone who was in the victim's vehicle. >> still trying to find everyone who was in the car, 'cause they dropped the passenger off and left. while there is limited suspect information they don't believe drivers on route 50 have reason to worry. >> no indication there is any kind of pattern and no indication that you know, it's anything like this may happen again. so i would say everybody can stay calm about it for sure. >> reporter: the passenger who was shot was treated and released from the hospital and again, is cooperating with the police. the specific section of the maryland state police handling this investigation, they have a facebook page they are going to be posting information and also, they would like to hear from drivers who may have been on the road when this happened, around 4 a.m. this morning. you can go to our washington nbc4 app and look up maryland state police to see if you can find any information that could help them out with this investigation. go to their facebook page. reporting live, i'm tracee wilkins, back to you in the stud grow. up next, donald trump refusing to back down after his con strollers comments about john mccain. we hit 98 yesterday, 97 for a high today. tomorrow, a l but still on the hot side. the heat index close to 100. a good pool day. but what you about th a new "washington post"/abc news poll puts donald trump on top with scott walker following in second. but that was before trump's comments about senator john mccain. >> he is not a war hero.
