institute of standards and technology in gaithersburg may have been caused by a secret meth lab. investigators have recovered several chemicals, melted bottles and a recipe used to make meth at that facility. and a high-ranking federal police officer who was hurt in the explosion is believed to have been cooking those chemicals. news4's jackie bensen is gathering more details for a live report from the site coming up tonight at 5:00. the hunt is on in prince george's county for the people who shot at a car hitting a man in the back seat. both cars on route 50 in landover. about 5:00 in the morning when people in a dark honda accord fired at a jaguar. the guy in the jaguar was hit in the leg. our county bureau chief, tracee wilkins working this story, we will be talking to her in the next half hour. now to the mansion murders case so many of you have been following along with us. the main suspect was in court today and so was our pat collins and he tells us now what detectives reveal. pat? >> reporter: chris, we know about the dna evidence on the pizza, but today, we learned about more dna evidence in this case. darren wint is linked to the quadruple murders that the mansion in woodley park by dna, dna that was found on an uneaten piece of pizza at the crime scene. today, we learned of another match. at a preliminary hearing here at superior court, a police detective says wint's dna was found on a neon green safety vest located in the savopoulos porsche found the day of the murder and later torched in prince george's county. it was may 13th when savava savopoulos savopoulos, wife amy 10-year-old son, phillip and their housekeeper vera figueroa, were found murdered at the family home on woodland drive. a fire was started in an apparent effort to cover up the crime. police say the murders happened after $40,000 in cash ransom money was delivered to the house. wint was arrested with a group of people about a week later. police today say they have recovered $30,000 of that ransom. $3,000 in money orders $7,000 in cash and $1100 that they say wint paid to an immigration lawyer two days after the the murder. sean hannah, an immigration lawyer, represented wint a few days after the his arrest but he was not the immigration lawyer that got that $1100 retainer two days after the the murder. now the judge found probable cause, this our newsroom. in about ten minutes jackie bensen will be live in gaithersburg with what we learned a secret meth lab may have caused an explosion at a government lab. version found chemicals and a res for meth at the national institute of standards and technology a high-ranking federal police officer who was hurt in that explosion is believed to be one of the people cooking those chemicals. this is chris gordon at the montgomery county courthouse where last week, a judge released a defendant in a murder case simply on his promise not to run. but apparently, he did. 32-year-old deion sobotker was ordered to report for the fitting of an electronic monitoring device and to be confined to home detention but sobotker disappeared on thursday. the montgomery county sheriff's fugitive squad searched for sobotker all weekend. >> we know that he stayed in a hotel. we know that he stayed in another location last night as well. but none of these were areas where he was -- he told the court he was down route 50. i'm tracee wilkins. on saturday in wisconsin strong winds blew a balloon out of control with two people in the basket. two of the tethers anchoring the balloon to the ground snapped and there went its link to the ground. a third tether was tied to a parked suv. look how strong that wind is it just blew the suv right along behind the balloon. amazingly the people in the balloon walked away unharmed. there were some tense moments today off the coast of houston, texas, a barge broke free from a tug boat and collided with another barge. one of the ships was carrying 1 million gallons of oil and call the fire. now, it happened this morning took about four hours for firefighters to get that fire out. right now, crews are going in to try to see how much if any, of that oil leaked out. here in the district there's a new concern about an old problem, underaged drinking. tom sherwood reports the city kicked off a campaign today to warn against alcohol abuse. >> reporter: beer wine alcohol, readily available legally most anywhere in the district, but too often, readily available to young teens. seems to be getting younger and younger, size to get in people's home, not under lock and key. >> reporter: this woman worked with the latin-american youth center since 1979, running it since 1987. >> we have a serious problem in drinking among youth of all pages. it is not limited to any one ethnicity. >> reporter: a multiyear campaign was announced today to combat underaged drinking a survey shows 22% of teens say they have used alcohol before able 13. >> youth who drink before the age of 15 are five times more likely to develop alcohol dependence and abuse alcohol by the time they turn 21. >> reporter: the program won't eliminate alcohol abuse among young people but the mayor says parents need help. >> we want to make sure that parents are armed with as much information as they can on a variety of issues but alcohol use is certainly one of them. >> daughter in this court, in person looking at the man accused of killing her father, killing her mother, killing her little brother. in court today, one of the savopoulos daughters. she was away at school when it happened. she sat in the front row of the courtroom. she had a stone in her hand rubbing it with her fingers from time to time. she watched, she took notes, she heard it all. today, new autopsy results. a detective at superior court says savava savopoulos and the family's housekeeper, vera figueroa, were murdered by strangulation. they were two of the four victims in this horrific quadruple murder at this mansion in woodley park. also killed savava savopoulos' wife, amy, stabbed to death and their 10-year-old son, phillip, burned to death. there is evidence they were tied and possibly tortured. police say the weapons include a baseball bat samurai swords and an unthen sharp object. charged in the case, darren wint. police say his dna was found on a peas of uneaten pizza at the murder scene. today they say wint's dna was also found on the scene of this burning porsche car, stolen from the mansion on

with umbrellas today trying to dodge that heat. of course, the workers, the folks who got to go out there and do manual labor here in this hot, hot sun, lots of water for them today, they said. of course some people tough it had out and got some exercise in. so, not a bad day all in all. now, coming up tonight at 5:00, we are going to continue to talk about how people are handling this heat. one closest to you on our nbc washington app. wendy? major developments this afternoon involving the explosion at a government lab over the weekend. sources are telling news4 the blast at the national institute of standards and technology in gaithersburg may have been caused by a secret meth lab. investigators have recovered several chemicals, melted bottles and a recipe used to make meth at that facility. and a high-ranking federal police officer who was hurt in the explosion is believed to have been cooking those chemicals. news4's jackie bensen is gathering more details for a live report from the site coming up tonight at 5:00. the hunt is on in prince george's county for the people who shot at a car hitting a man in the back seat. both cars on route 50 in landover. about 5:00 in the morning when people in a dark honda accord fired at a jaguar. the guy in the jaguar was hit in the leg. our county bureau chief, tracee wilkins working this story, we will be talking to her in the next half hour. now to the mansion murders case so many of you have been following along with us. the main suspect was in court today and so was our pat collins and he tells us now what detectives reveal. pat? >> reporter: chris, we know about the dna evidence on the pizza, but today, we learned about more dna evidence in this case. darren wint is linked to the quadruple murders that the mansion in woodley park by dna, dna that was found on an uneaten piece of pizza at the crime scene. today, we learned of another match. at a preliminary hearing here at superior court, a police detective says wint's dna was found on a neon green safety vest located in the savopoulos porsche found the day of the murder and later torched in prince george's county. it was may 13th when savava savopoulos savopoulos, wife amy 10-year-old son, phillip and their housekeeper vera figueroa, were found murdered at the family home on woodland drive. a fire was started in an apparent effort to cover up the crime. police say the murders happened after $40,000 in cash ransom money was delivered to the house. wint was arrested with a group of people about a week later. police today say they have recovered $30,000 of that ransom. $3,000 in money orders $7,000 in cash and $1100 that they say wint paid to an immigration lawyer two days after the the murder. sean hannah, an immigration lawyer, represented wint a few days after the his arrest but he was not the immigration lawyer that got that $1100 retainer two days after the the murder. now the judge found probable cause, this felony murder case goes to the grand jury. the next hearing is in september. in court today one of the valve savopoulos daughters, she was in the front row. i will have more at 5:00. now back to you. packs. the board at deep creek late lake in garrett county says jet packs cannot be used on weekends or the holidays according to a report in the cumberland times news. the board says it is not singling out jet pack users. those are the same restrictions in place for other personal water craft. any jet pack user in the state of maryland has to be at least 16 years of age, wear a helmet and council's goal to award an additional 1.5 million degrees and credentials by 2030. a pregnant mom and her two children were swept away by floodwaters and now, her ohio community is reaching out to help them and their family. it happened near the up to of ripley yesterday, about an hour outside of cincinnati. the floodwaters pushed the family's mobile home off its foundation in red oak creek. the mother was six months pregnant. her 5-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy also died. the father and two old kids are still in the hospital. right now, engineers are inspecting part of that busy california interstate that was left crumpled from the heavy rain there, interstate 10 trapped several people in cars when it collapsed yesterday. one driver still hospitalize. that interstate will be closed indefinitely. this is a major route for travel between california and arizona. and from the heart of the country east, it's been a hot one. temperatures are, well they are up there again in the away unharmed. there were some tense moments today off the coast of houston, texas, a barge broke free from a tug boat and collided with another barge. one of the ships was carrying 1 million gallons of oil and call the fire. now, it happened this morning took about four hours for firefighters to get that fire out. right now, crews are going in to try to see how much if any, of that oil leaked out. here in the district there's a new concern about an old problem, underaged drinking. tom sherwood reports the city kicked off a campaign today to warn against alcohol abuse. >> reporter: beer wine alcohol, readily available legally most anywhere in the district, but too often, readily available to young teens. seems to be getting younger and younger, size to get in people's home, not under limited to any one ethnicity. >> reporter: a multiyear campaign was announced today to combat underaged drinking a survey shows 22% of teens say they have used alcohol before able 13. >> youth who drink before the age of 15 are five times more likely to develop alcohol dependence and abuse alcohol by the time they turn 21. >> reporter: the program won't eliminate alcohol abuse among young people but the mayor says parents need help. >> we want to make sure that parents are armed with as much information as they can on a variety of issues but alcohol use is certainly one of them. >> daughter in this court, in person looking at the man accused of killing her father, killing her mother, killing her little brother. in court today, one of the savopoulos daughters. she was away at school when it happened. she sat in the front row of the courtroom. she had a stone in her hand rubbing it with her fingers from time to time. she watched, she took notes, she heard it all. today, new autopsy results. a detective at superior court says savava savopoulos and the family's housekeeper, vera figueroa, were murdered by strangulation. they were two of the four victims in this horrific quadruple murder at this mansion in woodley park. also killed savava savopoulos' wife, amy, stabbed to death and their 10-year-old son, phillip, burned to death. there is evidence they were tied and possibly tortured. police say the weapons include a baseball bat samurai swords and an unthen sharp object. charged in the case, darren wint. police say his dna was found on a peas of uneaten pizza at the murder scene. today they say wint's dna was also found on the scene of this burning porsche car, stolen from the mansion on
