former president george h.w. bush is in the hospital right now after he broke a bone in his neck. bush was at his summer home in maine today when he fell, breaking a vertebrae in his neck. his spokesman just tweeted out that it was not life threatening, and the former president is in stable condition. when he is able to leave the hospital, mr. bush will have to wear a neck brace. he turned 91 last month. and just last week he appeared at several campaign events for his son jeb. he is being treated by doctors right now and a spokesman says he doesn't expect this to be a long stay. at the live desk, i'm chris lawrence. >> thank you, chris. it's one of many fast growing neighborhoods in the district. but since the july weekend, gnomenoma has been in the spotlight because of crime. >> three murders including the young political aide from connecticut killed on a metro train. and neighbors say tonight the murders are just the beginning. >> news4's live on m street northeast now with some of the questions raised tonight for d.c. police. jackie? >> reporter: well, doreen, this neighborhood is one of the city's gems and there was a lot of frustration at this meeting tonight. ward 6 councilmember charles allen and d.c. police officials got an earful from noma residents deeply concerned about crime near their home. the horror of the fatal stabbing of 24-year-old kevin sutherland july 4th during a robbery on board a metro train near the noma station still lingers. that crime was followed the next day by a second murder on new york avenue northeast near n street. police believe the victim 52-year-old thomas harris of alexandria was fatally injured during a struggle with a man who was trying to take his phone. d.c. police district manager william fitzgerald said that unlike those murders, a burglary and shooting inside the upscale flats apartments last sunday does not appear to be a random crime. >> the person was leaning toward that they were argued the. some activities they were involved in appear to be the cause of this. >> reporter: a murder that happened a day later at third and perry streets northeast remains unsolved. neighbors say they're seeing an unwelcome surge in street prostitution in that area. police theorize that new development at mt. vernon square pushed the prostitutes into noma. >> it would be nice if there were a much more concerted effort so the children, the elementary school kids don't have to be stepping up or picking up dirty condoms with latex gloves in front of their school. it's known as the highest level of city government the highest level of the police department. >> reporter: residents have asked for more police patrols and police officials say they are going to get them. doreen back to you. >> jackie bensen, thank you, jackie. not too far from where she is standing, a bloomingdale business will be closed for a year after getting caught selling synthetic drugs. aldus electronics was the site of multiple synthetic drug seizures. they say an employee was also shot there, and it may have been related to a drug sale. the owner of that store is a retired d.c. cop. last week mayor muriel bowser signed a tough new law allows police to close or fine bidses found selling synthetic drugs. a wild scene in prince george's county. the search is on for a man who dragged one of their fellow officers with his car and took off. here on alberta and todd drives in district heights. police tell us somehow the officer got caught in that car door. then the driver sped off, dragging the officer until the car crashed into a tree. the officer is expected to recover. dozens of others are searching for that driver now. we know tonight metro says it hopes to have problems on the red line fixed in time for the morning commute. many of you voiced your frustration on twitter throughout the day. oil on the tracks. the white station caused single tracking all day. metro says cleanup is still under way right now. it going on when you wake up. more pieces of the lyons sister mystery could come together tomorrow in bedford county virginia, the sheriff will hold a news conference there just 24 hours after he learned about the indictment of lloyd welch. newly unsealed search warrants reveal the evidence against welch. the strongest piece from his cousin, henry parker. according to court documents, parker says he helped lloyd lug two plastic bags from the trunk of a car back in 1975. he said they smelled of death and the bags were eventually set on fire. at today's news conference montgomery county police indicated they may not be done arresting people. >> the montgomery county police and all of our partners will work to hold every individual responsible who was involved with the abduction and murder of the lyons sisters. >> keep an eye on the nbc washington app tomorrow to learn what is revealed in that news conference from virginia. new at 11 a second arrest connected to the mysterious death of a landover woman. the charles county sheriff's office charged darelle wilson with the murder of crystal anderson. a hiker found anderson's remains at a charles county park in 2012. in march police also charged 22-year-old raymond posy iii in connection with the death. we could learn new details about the charleston church shootings tomorrow. 21-year-old dylann roof is expected to be at a hearing in charleston. a judge will decide whether to release more documents in the case. the judge originally sealed the documents to protect roof's right to a fair trial. he is accused of murdering nine people at the emanuel ame church last month. fight the power lines has bec of people in prince william county. they're pushing back for plans for new power lines that would stretch from gainesville to haymarket through their neighborhoods. shomari stone reports on the possible solutions laid out tonight for hundreds of homeowners. >> it's been very upsetting. >> reporter: christine is concerned about a proposed transmission power line plan she says that will lower her property value in the somerset crossing community. >> we are going to be very negatively impacted. my home backs right up to what would be 230,000 volts of power. it would be right there in my backyard. >> reporter: not in my backyard, a phrase often heard at battlefield high school tonight at this community meeting with virginia dominion power. around 100 people showed up. dominion is considering five different power line routes in western prince william county. local officials say the lines are being built for an internet company. >> all of the family in our community will be affected. >> reporter: noah smith wonders why the power lines can't go underground. >> there is so many residential areas in this vicinity. >> reporter: we asked virginia power. >> there is an underground option. the underground option is one of five there are four overhead options we're looking at and there is one underground option. >> reporter: and there is also the hybrid route 66 option. it would run partially underground. >> i think that compromise could be i-66. >> reporter: virginia dominion power will study all the routes, and submit an application to the state corporation commission by the end of the year. in haymarket, virginia, i'm shomari stone news4. a large crowd came out to remember a waldorf man killed at a house pocket in accokeek. chopper 4 captured the scene from the air as friends and family used white balloons and hundreds of candles to remember darryl sylvester or dj king jr. as police hunt for his killer. prince georges officials have slapped the owners of the house where the party took place with a fine. we're told they were selling tickets to the party, and that's illegal without a permit. the liquor board may also look into claims that alcohol was being sold there. members of congress tonight calling for change following a news4 i-team report. they want more money spent on internal government agents to cut down on the number of awol federal workers. here on monday night, the i-team's scott mcfarland reported that internal government watchdogs have caught at least 60 government workers doctoring their time sheets since 2012, skipping work to golf, gamble or play hookie. the cost to taxpayers? a million dollars. the i-team also reported those internal auditors have been facing budget cuts. tonight a powerful u.s. house chairman says the auditors need a boost to keep the workforce honest. >> not only from what you found but what we have found in a lot of our oversight and government reform hearings that employees federal employees in particular want something to be done about it. and yet they don't seem to trust management or the bureaucracy to get it done. >> maryland democrat chris van hollen also said today inspectors general need more funding. the white house sales pitch is under way. vice president biden will go back to capitol hill tomorrow to rally support among senate democrats for the u.s.-iran nuclear deal. the vice president made the same pitch to house democrats today. in a white house news conference, president obama rejected the idea that lifting sanctions against iran would put the country on the brink of developing a bomb. congress has a 60-day window to review the agreement. new at 11, the president is already turning to domestic issues. tonight he launched a new program to expand high speed internet access in select areas including maryland and d.c. >> the internet is not a luxury it's a necessity. >> the program is called connect home, and it's designed to bring broad band to four communities. it's similar to a program that has been wiring classrooms, but president obama says kids in public housing need to be able to go online at home. the government is partnering with companies like google and best buy and expects to bring broad band to more than 200,000 kids. president obama pointed to families who don't have a high school graduation or education and said fewer than half of them are plugged in. >> so in other words, the people who could benefit the most from the latest technology erika gonzalez has our story. >> reporter: carol moses is a looking to upgrade the bathrooms in her gaithersburg home. new showers, tile and cabinet try. she is going to spend a lot of money to fix two bathrooms, and she wants to go with the best contractor for the job. >> i do a lot of research. >> reporter: she narrowed it down to two. chose one. but it's the one she didn't choose that she wrote a review about online and why we're talking to her now. you feel like what you gave was an honest review? >> yes i do. >> reporter: she says the review was mostly positive. however -- >> i let people know that i had chosen not to use him because i felt he was too pushy. >> reporter: that's when carol says she started to get e-mails and calls from the contractor. >> the contractor threatened me with a suit for slander. and i contacted an attorney. the attorney said a case for slander is weak, if anything. but in your best interest, i would just take down. and so i did. >> reporter: jack gillis is with the consumer federation of america. >> but there is not a lot consumers can do in this situation. and that's why it's the wild west. you really don't have much protection against the company that doesn't like your review. >> reporter: gillis says keep two things in mind. number one always post on an anonymous basis. and number two, be ready to go to bat for your posting, whether it's a review about a hotel, auto service, or the hamburger you had for lunch, are you willing to go to court over it? >> for the most part, you are protected by freedom of speech. however that does not necessarily stop a disgruntled and particularly wealthy company from coming after you. >> reporter: and for many people like carol the sheer thought of being sued is enough to make her sick. >> i did not want to deal with any repercussions of a negative review. >> reporter: and when you're the one reading reviews the csa says take them with a grain of salt. too good and they could be planted start to the day. nice finish too. pleasant conditions expected tomorrow. but by the weekend, even friday, going to be a little sticky. a weekend, it's going to be oppressive as temperatures start to climb. here is the overall weather pattern. the jet stream, the upper-level winds that control our weather on the south side of the jet, you the heat. it's a lot of it right here. we're close to it today. meanwhile, as we make our way toward the weekend, we're going to see that jet stream build. in fact, i think it's going to stay way up here for the northern portions of the country as we get through the rest of july. june 12, only three for july. but that's going to change in a big way. check out your forecast here with the sky cast. you can see a few clouds around the area tomorrow. start the heatwave. it's a four-day stretch. and it doesn't end until tuesday. the hottest right now looks as though it's going to be monday, with heat index topping well over 100 degrees. and, yes, with this pattern change, not only do we get the heat, but we get the summer storms each day. saturday evening, so it's late, after the daylight hours. sunday afternoon, monday afternoon and again get it. today was the last day that players could be signed to long-term contracts this season, and the cowboys receiver dez bryant threatened to miss games if he didn't have a long-term deal. turns out that will not be the case. he'll be on board for training camp and week one. today bryant and the cowboys agreed to a five-year, $70 million contract with $45 million of that in guaranteed money. that guaranteed money is the second most at his position. the $14 million annual average that he makes is the second most in the league behind detroit lions receiver calvin johnson. dez, he is coming off a career best 16-touchdown season. his 41 touchdowns since 2012 are the most in the league over that time. bryant not the only deal getting done today. the broncos locked up their receiver, demaryius thomas to a five-year, $70 million deal. he only gets $43.5 million. only. the chiefs and their linebacker justin houston is into a six-year deal $101 million. that includes $52.5 million in guarantees. and the patriots made keevan gostkowski giving him a four-year deal, just over $17 million. nhl o hockey players are vastly underpaid. they need mor a little bit of duct tape and a whole
