Parents ran for cover this morning scooping up children along the way at the Columbia HeightsCommunity Center on gerard street. Police are still looking for the guy who started shooting. News4s Jackie Bensen is live in northwest with reaction. Jackie . Reporter doreen, nothing describes the terror of this better than the woman youre about to hear from. She was at this playground with her 1yearold and her 3yearold. Were not showing her face. This is somewhere happy place, not somewhere where youre running, shielding children from bullets. Reporter it was just before noon and the newly remodelled playground at the Columbia HeightsCommunity Center in girard northwest was bustling with people. Most were young people, many of them participating in summer camps. It happened so fast. Witnesses say a young man ran through the playground with a gun in his hand. Then they say stood just inside the rear gate and began firing from the playground at some men in the alley. And my 3yearold was just among the group. And i for sure looked for her first and grabbed her little baby arm. In the process i think i probably knocked another kid over which i probably slung on my other hip. I had children hanging from me as i ran. Reporter she says her hands were still shaking hours later. There was a group. See this out building right here . Huddled behind there is 4yearolds. So imagine your 4yearold huddled behind an outbuilding for ten minutes waiting for a man with a gun to go away. Reporter the Community Center was closed for rest of the day. John stokes is the Deputy Director of the d. C. Department of parks and recreation. Theyre looking into the situation. So i dont want to say too much about it. They are rig louisly looking into the situation. Were told residents can expect to see extra Police Patrols in the area tomorrow. Jackie, thank you. New at 11 a Montgomery County corrections officer arrested for having sex with a woman who was doing Community Service. Jeremy simmons charged with Sexual Misconduct and attempted Second Degree rape. Simmons told her if they had sex begin he would sign off on the rest of her Community Service hours. He has since been released on bond. The red cross is doing its best to help about a thousand people who dont have power for the second time in three days. An electrical fire knocked out the air conditioning in all but one elevator at a highrise condo building in Silver Spring. Right now the red cross is talking to some of the residents. The red cross has opened a shelter at Montgomery Blair high school not too far away from where we are. Let me move right out of the way. You see that bus right there . Some of the residents are supposed to come out here get on the bus and leave. But here is the issue. Many of them are not going to the shelter. Keep in mind these are condos. Theyre not apartments. And a lot of folks say theyre not going anywhere. Theyre either staying with family or friends tonight. And firefighters tell me its highly unlikely that an Electrical Contractor will be able to fix the wires in this building. Tonight nearly a thousand people are in the dark, somsithing in candlelight inside University Towers in Silver Spring after a fire caused an electrical outrage. Its annoying. Its frustrating. I came home after a long day today. I was kind of fried and not to mention the building smells horrible. Reporter not to mention its hot. The backup generator powers one elevator and fire alarms. Water pressure is really low. Reporter the trouble started on sunday after investigators say a fire broke thought the boiler room and knocked out electricity to the 15story building that houses 270 condos. Everyone had to be evacuated. Firefighters rescued several people from elevators that stopped working. The power came back on and then went off again today. It was on all day yesterday. Then i went to work today. I came back around 3 00, and it was the same. Sunday there was no electricity. It was the same situation. Reporter adama and her mother are going to a friends house tonight. Its really hot outside. And not having any Running Water really makes it work. So its terrible. Reporter ron jaffe is delivering batteryoperated fans to his 92yearold mother. She is on the 11th floor. She doesnt want to leave. She has been there for 25 years. Back to you in the studio. New tonight we have learned the Smithsonian Institution does not plan to take down an exhibit featuring art from bill cosbys personal collection. The pieces of artwork have been on display at the National Museum of african art since last november. Today the museum issued a statement saying it was aware of new revelations about cosby, but the exhibit is about the artwork and the artists and not about the owners of the collections. Newly released documents show cosby admitted ten years ago to obtaining quaaludes to give to women he wanted to have sex with. There is a renewed push tonight for bens chili bowl to remove all references tos could built. That includes that large mural there outside the restaurant on 13th street and u streets northwest. The fbi removed electronics from his indiana home as part of a child pornography investigation. Two months ago, the head of jareds Charitable Foundation was arrested and charged with producing and possessing child porn. At the time fogel said he was shocked by the allegations. After the raid subway and fogel mutually decided to suspend their relationship. Sources are telling our sister station in the bay area he used a gun that belongs to a federal agent. Authorities checked the guns serial number and it matched a federal agents weapon. Earlier today Juan FranciscoLopez Sanchez pleaded not guilty to charges he killed the woman on the embarcadero. Sanchez he found the gun on a bench wrapped in a blanket and it accidentally fired when he touched it. Last week kate steinle was walking with her father when somebody shot her in the back. It started a firestorm over immigration enforcement. San francisco was a socalled sanctuary city and they let sanchez out of jail despite federal officers trying to get him deported. The coast guard sent a rescue team in to find the air force pilot who safely ejected from his f16 just before it slammed into the side of a cessna.
