that new scandal rocking the white house. the president's lawyer now admits he personally paid stormy daniels, the porn star who said she had an affair with donald trump. he said it happened weeks before the 2016 vote, campaign watchdogs call that an illegal campaign contribution and an official investigation under way and tom llamas is tracking all the latest. >> reporter: good morning. we've just learned as you mentioned the s.e.c. has been asked to look into an illegal campaign contribution possibly involving the trump campaign. that alone is serious enough but the money in question is an alleged payoff by one of the president's most loyal allies to a porn star to keep her quiet about an alleged affair she had with president trump years ago. this morning, a stunning admission from president trump's longtime personal attorney, lawyer michael cohen admits to paying $135,000 of his own money to pornographic film actress stormy daniels. the woman who says she had an affair with donald trump in 2006 at a lake tahoe golf tournament years before he became president but just months after melania trump had given birth to their son baron. neither the trump organization nor the trump campaign was a party to the transaction with ms. clifford and neither reimbursed me for the payment either directly or indirectly. cohen said in a statement, the payment to ms. clifford was lawful and was not a campaign contribution or a campaign expenditure by anyone. cohen did not say whether trump knew he made the payments. reports of an alleged affair between daniels and president trump resurfaced after a "wall street journal" report alleged that she was paid $130,000 just before the election and there was a transcript of a 2011 interview with dams which she said trump then a reality tv star invited her to his suite where they later this sex and the president promised her a role on "apprentice" and daniels saying it lasted about a year. >> is any of that true? >> define true. >> reporter: the adult entertainment star refused to break her silence when she appeared on "jimmy kimmel live" following the tarantino. >> do you have a nondisclosure agreement? >> do i? >> you can't say whether you have one but if you didn't have a nondisclosure agreement you could certainly say i don't have a nondisclosure agreement. >> you're so smart. >> reporter: in the months leading up to the election jacob wiseberg was working on breaking the stormy daniels story but that happened just before the payment occurred. he felt she was telling the truth because her story was so detailed and had friends who could corroborate parts of that story and reached out to the white house for comment but so far have not heard back. >> as you said michael cohen, one of the longest serving aides, why did he make the payment. how could president trump not know? >> we do know, michael cohen was one of the closest people outside his relatives to donald trump and his office was steps away from president trump's at trump tower. he didn't have an official role in the campaign but he was known as the pit bull. he would take care of problems for president trump outside of the campaign. he would go after reporters on cable news and threaten lawsuits, a very tough customer, we'll see what happens. >> right before the election. >> see how the white house responds. shaun white shaup white should have expected that question would come. he probably did expect it. yet, when i asked him about those sexual misconduct allegations, he seemed to be caught off guard and when i pressed him about it, he said that he was there only to talk about the olympics and not, quote, gossip. >> shaun white takes the gold. >> reporter: just hours after shaun white wept and pumped his fierros in triumph following his nearly perfect history-making run, the four-time olympian on the defense after sexual misconduct allegations against the snowboarder resurfaced. in 2016 lena zawaideh who had been in white's band bad things for over five years filed a lawsuit claiming white sexually harassed other and sent her sexually explicit note tos and forced her to watch sexually disturbing videos and enforced a authoritarian management style. white's lawyers have always denied her claims. shaun, over the past couple of days the sexual harassment allegations by lena zawaideh have resurfaced. are you concerned that they're going to tarnish your legacy? >> you know, honestly i'm here to talk about the olympics, not gossip so -- but i don't think so. i am who i am, and i'm proud of who i am and my friends, you know, love me and vouch for me and i think that's -- stands on its own. >> so you're saying the allegations against you are gossip? >> i think we're here to talk about psychological and sexual misconduct that lasted for years were dredged up to craft a bogus lawsuit against him, but white has never denied actually sending those techs and we've seen them in the dramatic testimony the fbi director flatly corrected the white house story line jeopardizing the job of chief of staff john kelly. cecilia vega is tracking all the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that white house story has been shifting for days and we are still nowhere closer to knowing who knew what and when. it was their go-to line for days. >> the process for the background questions about the contradiction, press secretary sarah sanders now blames a little-known white house office, the white house personnel security office. >> they had not completed their process and made a recommendation to the white house for adjudication. >> reporter: but just a day earlier. >> this is a process that isn't -- doesn't operate within the white house. >> reporter: from the president himself, still no mention of the women. >> mr. president, do you believe rob porter's ex-wives? do you believe rob porter's ex-wife, mr. president? >> does the president believe the women? the allegations for months tells "the wall street journal" he wouldn't have handled the situation differently saying, quote, it was all done right. is the white house still maintaining john kelly on a temporary clearance and jared kushner among them. the president's own director of national intelligence is now sounding the alarm saying anyone with a temporary security clearance should have is already uncovered evidence of russians targeting the upcoming elections and, robin, abc news learned the russians plan to not only use social media to sow discord through fake new by a probing state elections systems to see if they can be infiltrated. sobering day on capitol hill. now to those rescues in oregon. first responders racing against time in dangerous conditions to save climbers stuck on mt. hood. abc's kayna whitworth has the latest. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: hey, michael, good morning. so there were seven climbers in two separate groups in desperate need of help atop oregon's highest peak and with this weather moving in, all this wind and snow it was a race against time. the original call came from from a group of four after a climber they were with fell 750 feet. the oregon national guard sent up a black hawk helicopter while fellow climbers performed chest compressions on him. sadly he died after being air life lifted to the hospital. meanwhile there were another group of climbers stranded. more than 40 ascended and this snowcat brought down two of the climbers off the mountain. another one had to be brought down in a sled after some 17 hours on even some deaths among american vacationers after they say they drank just small or moderate amounts of alcohol. baldwin writing in a letter, i am extremely concerned. the state department must do more to protect and assist our citizens when abroad. 20-year-old ab by conner after she and her brother were found face down in a pool in 2017. her family speaking exclusively with abc. >> the bartender pulls out a line of shots and they come all the way down and i take one and everyone else does and the last thing i remember was just like we were right now sitting here talking and lights were staying say no tainted alcohol was ever found there. mexican officials say they've seized 1.4 million gallons of tainted alcohol, a toxic mix of cheap ingredients from mexican businesses in the past seven years including tourist hot spots like resort, clubs and bars. raquel rutledge has been investigating this story for the past six months. >> i have reports from more than 150 people that had blackouts and sexual assault. >> reporter: this couple said they had two shots in the pool before getting ready for dinner. >> he is in the shower and that's all i remember from the trip. >> yelling her name, could not find her and i looked over this balcony and i could see legs on the ground. she was completely naked, unconscious, bleeding from the mouth and the head. >> wow, and when they got back to the u.s., doctors discovered she had a skull fracture, bruising on her brain and a severe concussion. meanwhile, the state department says the u.s. is not able to prosecute there honolulu for passenger, michael, with part of their jet blew away and were told to base for an emergency landing. terrifying moments when a piece of this plane an engine cover rips off in flight over the pacific ocean. passengers recording the violent vibrations that follow. >> almost felt like an explosion and a huge jolt of the plane. it had jaws started violently shaking. >> reporter: the flight from san francisco was headed to hawaii when the part peels off. >> it was truly like being inside a gigantic washing machine that had all the towels moved to one side. it felt like the while plane would shake apart. >> reporter: aaron and his sisters say it wasn't just the cover coming off. >> through the remainder we continued to see different pieces of debris and bolts flying out of it and hitting the side of the plane or just falling into the ocean. >> reporter: the pilots were taking no chances asking for an emergency landing. >> we're an emergency aircraft. roll the fire trucks. >> reporter: the crew instructing passengers to brace for that landing. >> brace, brace, brace. >> reporter: now the plane landed safely. nobody was hurt. now the engine was vibrating because of -- instead of the air smoothly going over the engine it was being bounced without that cover causing that vibration, alarming sight. pretty scary. no incident for them. they got on the ground safely. [ cheers and applause ] >> hello. >> and you have a question. >> i love you, girl. you are amazing. congratulations on the movie. >> thank you. >> okay, so i have a question. this is a little selfish but when you coming back to broadway because i'm greedy but more importantly, you seen the social impact that representation has been giving us especially with this movie. and you have a different perspective than the rest of us do. what has it been like to see the impact on young kids who are so excited to see this movie, to be represented on the big screen? >> you i think we all see ourselves better when we can see ourselves in someone else and this film -- [ applause ] and this film is providing that to a whole new generation of people. i certainly didn't have this representation coming up that's one of the things that drives me as an actress, you know, to tell stories about people that look like me and to think that i'm that image for, you know, kids coming up is such a blessing, it's such an honor and i just feel extremely, extremely fortunate to have this moment in this world and our kids can see this and it's not just -- it's definitely for the black kids out there that don't see themselves in superheroes but also the fact that i was able to identify with white superheroes all my life. i think it's a high time that the other thing comes around, you know, the opposite. like, you know, so -- [ applause ] >> paula, she'll be back to broadway when she gets a break. who knows when that will be. paula, thank you for your question. >> thank you. >> nice to meet you. [ applause ] >> reporter: and now at the university of virginia, carla ll history as the first african-american woman athletics director at a power five institution. and an historice are only five n a.d.s at this level. >> she was a baller. show some respect. >> reporter: when you all heard that carla williams was going to be the new athletic director at the university of virginia, what was the response from the team? >> it's just great to have someone who is like you and in a powerful position and especially for the community and everything going on in the world today it's just really inspiring. >> reporter: carla's career dates back to the '80s when she earned a scholarship to play basketball at the university of georgia. i know this is something that you worked toward. just explain to people what all went into getting here. >> i got recruited by georgia and i thought coach landers was kind of the boss at georgia until i got there and i saw that there were administrators and they got to work with different sports. that sparked my interest right there. >> reporter: from point guard to point bern, she went on to become an assistant coach at her alma mater and later spent more than 20 years as administrator. not all athletic directors have a ph.d. but you do. >> i felt like if i was going to be an athletic director that i needed to take away any excuse for me not to be hired. >> reporter: but even with advanced degrees and decades of opposition. >> there aren't many women in decision-making positions. i knew my time was coming. i knew at one point it would be my season and so i was just very,patient. >> breaking new details in that deadly attack in virginia. >> reporter: it comes months after charlottesville was at the center of racial discord. some people might say i don't want anything to do with this place. you didn't. >> no. >> you said you wanted to come here. >> yeah examine how . >> how is it now and did that factor into your decision-making process. >> i believe this is a destiny. the people of charlottesville have decided they won't allow the darkness here. that they will fight back if how are things now. >> we're still recovering as a community and all had conversation, how can we use our platform to say it's not reflective of charlottesville but more importantly of what is happening in the world and the nation. >> reporter: carla is now living the dream at one time that seemed unimaginable. a young black girl will watch this piece and for that moment she'll go, oh, i can be an athlet athletic director. coach something fine, being a broadcaster is fine, those things have been done. this has never been done. >> i get chill, you know, just thinking about it. i'm living proof that you can do anything if you work hard. if you fight for your education, you fight for the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than you. and you dream it. >> this is your dream. >> oh, yeah. yes. absolutely. >> cannot stress, cannot stress what a big deal it is to be an athletic director but saw the university president game, teresa sullivan and said that's great you did this. she said we just wanted the best and i've known carla for many years. way back wednesday, 1996. there she is with her baby girl. this was her last year coaching. i had no idea what was in store for her. she's the first in her family, carla, to go to college. her daughter that she's holding right now is in the college at the university of georgia. >> wow.
