one out of ten deaths in america since the start of february has been caused by the flu. it is monday night. the big story on "action news" tonight is a medical crisis throughout the tristate area and the rest of the country and the peak of the flu season could be wakes away. dann cuellar is at hanneman hospital. it's historically bad and getting historically worse. >> that's right, jim. the number of flu cases across the area is exploding. many more cases reported by this time last year and last week was a bad week for people getting the flu. doctors across the region are reporting a huge strike in the flu known as type a. it's packing a punch. >> chills, coughing, nausea and diarrhea. >> there have been 26 influenza deaths alone. these are the numbers being reported since october 1st with montgomery county reporting highest, 2100 cases. new jersey doubled the number of flu cases last week with 2,000. that compares with the 4,709 cases it saw the previous week. >> you can get the flu with the previous strain. it was not 100% effective. saying that, it's never 100% effective. >> jefferson is pushing its jeff connect app to allow patients face time with dr.s without having to come into the office. >> it avoids you going to the waiting room where flu is rampant and you getting the flu even if you may not, it could seay you from getting the flu. if you want to avoid getting the flu, here are a few steps you should practice. >> if you are sick, avoid other people. if you are going to have a fever, coughing, stay home. >> if you are around people that have the flu or you are worried about being contagious, wipe down all services especially in places where you are working. >> and keep plenty of hand sanitizer around and use it often. try to avoid being around sick people as much as possible. i'm dann cuellar, channel6 "action news." >> thank you, dan. flames are burning through a home for an hour and a half late tonight in trenton. chopper 6 was there as firefighters tried to get a handle on the blaze. it's still burning. the fire gutted the top floor of a rojas on colonial avenue and spread to a neighboring address. this broke out at 9:30. the flames are burning. here is one good piece of news, no one has been reported hurt. >> philadelphia police are asking for help finding a man that bound and burned a man in olney overnight. the victim was driven to west ford road where his captors poured gasoline on him and set him afire. he survived and remains in intensive care tonight. the victim was abducted leaving his job helping special needs residents. >> a family member received messages from our victim's phone from the people that abducted him demanding $10,000. this went on for at least five hours, 5:42 police were called. >> police do not think the victim was picked at random. they have not been able to interview him but he originally told investigators that the kidnappers were driving a black audi with tinted w0eu7bds. windows. >> there is a walk against crime. live at headquarters is annie mccormick. >> jim, the public safety walk organized today by community leaders talking about gun violence. they held the walk at the scene of one of four homicides that happened over the weekend. >> tonight, a public response to one of several weekend homicides this one at 75th and elmwood. >> using bull horns and lights and sirens, local clergy, "mike broomhead shows" of community watch and police knocked on doors. >> it was here sunday afternoon in broad daylight a barrage of bullets left two injured and one dead. johnson's office received concerned calls from constituents that morning. >> it's a quiet neighborhood off the beaten path. we received calls about what is going on and what are you going to do about it? >> it's important that we are out here. >> gunfire killed four people in the city and left multiple people injured. at ninth and huntington, there was a vigil in honor of curtis williams killed sunday in north philadelphia. his mom saying this tonight. >> it was senseless. i hope justice will prevail. >> the scene continued across the city. rozalin sanders who lives near 75th and elmwood appreciates leaders going door to door and hope it sends a message. >> a lot of us care. the neighbors will talk among each other. >> it's what we are dealing with gun violence in the city of philadelphia. >> jim, a good time to remind people that there is a $20,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. reporting live outside of police headquarters, annie mccormick, "action news" at 6:00. back to you, jim. >> captain robert eckhart is back at home two weeks after receiving a severe head injury while fighting a fire. eckhart was about to leave the hospital to a surprised party in bell mar. he plans to do out patient rehab until he can rejoin the department. >> get ready for a rollercoaster ride of temperatures this week. there is lingering fallout from this weekend's rain. cecily tynan has it all in the first look at the accuweather forecast. >> quick changes this week. 12 hours ago we were dealing with rain, rain that started saturday afternoon. 11:00 in the morning, we had lingering showers. high pressure drying us out, brought back sunshine this afternoon. parts of south jersey, two to four inches of rain. we have minor flooding trk cream crested near memberton. it's not expected to drop below flood stage until wednesday morning. the norris river is cresting and will like lick drop below flood stage some time tomorrow morning. there could be local roads flooded due to the heavy rain. we are 10 to 32-degrees cooler this time tonight than 24 hours ago. it was so warm last night with temperature in the 60s. now we'll drop below normal pretty much for one day. the average high this time of year, 43, compared to average, three degrees below normal tomorrow. then we get a big jump, temperatures rising nine degrees above average by wednesday, thursday 20-degrees above average before another drop headed to the weekend. two more chances of rain talking about that in the seven-day forecast. jim?
