one out of ten deaths in america since the start of february has been caused by the flu. it is monday night. the big story on "action news" tonight is a medical crisis throughout the tristate area and the rest of the country and the peak of the flu season could be wakes away. dann cuellar is at hanneman hospital. it's historically bad and getting historically worse. >> that's right, jim. the number of flu cases across the area is exploding. many more cases reported by this time last year and last week was a bad week for people getting the flu. doctors across the region are reporting a huge strike in the flu known as type a. it's packing a punch. >> chills, coughing, nausea and diarrhea. >> there have been 26 influenza deaths alone. these are the numbers being reported since october 1st with montgomery county reporting highest, 2100 cases. new jersey doubled the number of flu cases last week with 2,000. that compares with the 4,709 cases it saw the previous week. >> you can get the flu with the previous strain. it was not 100% effective. saying that, it's never 100% effective. >> jefferson is pushing its jeff connect app to allow patients face time with dr.s without having to come into the office. >> it avoids you going to the waiting room where flu is rampant and you getting the flu even if you may not, it could seay you from getting the flu. if you want to avoid getting the flu, here are a few steps you should practice. >> if you are sick, avoid other people. if you are going to have a fever, coughing, stay home. >> if you are around people that have the flu or you are worried about being contagious, wipe down all services especially in places where you are working. >> and keep plenty of hand sanitizer around and use it often. try to avoid being around sick people as much as possible. i'm dann cuellar, channel6 "action news." >> thank you, dan. flames are burning through a home for an hour and a half late tonight in trenton. chopper 6 was there as firefighters tried to get a handle on the blaze. it's still burning. the fire gutted the top floor of a rojas on colonial avenue and spread to a neighboring address. this broke out at 9:30. the flames are burning. here is one good piece of news, no one has been reported hurt. >> philadelphia police are asking for help finding a man that bound and burned a man in olney overnight. the victim was driven to west ford road where his captors poured gasoline on him and set him afire. he survived and remains in intensive care tonight. the victim was abducted leaving his job helping special needs residents. >> a family member received messages from our victim's phone from the people that abducted him demanding $10,000. this went on for at least five hours, 5:42 police were called. >> police do not think the victim was picked at random. they have not been able to interview him but he originally told investigators that the kidnappers were driving a black audi with tinted w0eu7bds. windows. >> there is a walk against crime. live at headquarters is annie mccormick. >> jim, the public safety walk organized today by community leaders talking about gun violence. they held the walk at the scene of one of four homicides that happened over the weekend. >> tonight, a public response to one of several weekend homicides this one at 75th and elmwood. >> using bull horns and lights and sirens, local clergy, "mike broomhead shows" of community watch and police knocked on doors. >> it was here sunday afternoon in broad daylight a barrage of bullets left two injured and one dead. johnson's office received concerned calls from constituents that morning. >> it's a quiet neighborhood off the beaten path. we received calls about what is going on and what are you going to do about it?
