Robert mongeluzzi represented 34 passengers on amtrak train 188. The train derailed in Port Richmond with 238 passengers on board. Eight were killed and over 200 injured. The train was traveling over 100 miles an hour in a 50 Miles Per Hour zone when it hit a curve and went off the tracks. He sees striking similarities to todays derailment. The first thing that you think about when a train derails on a curve is it was going too fast. And when you see the locomotive, which is heavier and goes on a Straight Path while everything behind it falls over, it is eerily reminiscent of amtrak 188. Reporter the ntsb found that the philadelphia derailment could have been prevented by positive train control, a computerized speed limiting system. The safety measure is not in place nationwide and reportedly was not being used on the rails the washington train was traveling. Well, they clearly havent learned. Ill tell you what, were up here at the Police Athletic center in Strawberry Mansion. Theres a lot of people working really hard to make sure that a lot of people out there have a happy holidays. It all started with the eagles Malcolm Jenkins. Lets take a look. By the looks of the smiles on their faces and display of talented dance moves its a happy day inside the home of berniece beatty and her eight grandchildren but its not hard to see why either. The eagles Malcolm Jenkins some teammates and several members of the Philadelphia Police showed up with gifts and an incredible holiday meal. Its beautiful. The kids love it. I love it. Reporter go eagles, right this is one of many families jenkins and company are making deliveries to to ensure a happy holidays. Its all made possible by Many Organizations but it was spearheaded by the Malcolm Jenkins foundation and philadelphia Police Athletic league. We caught up with jenkins and Deputy Police commissioner joe sullivan at the pal center in Strawberry Mansion before they and volunteers packed everything up and shipped them out. Weve been blessed to have holidays with our families with food and gift. Its our way of giving back. For these families christmas would be just another day of the week. Thats whats really great. This the third year that the Malcolm Jenkins foundation has done this, second year they invited the Philadelphia Police department to come in and partner with them. Reporter 27 organizations are going to make deliveries to five families each in need. One organization thats being helped the Ronald Mcdonald house. They showed us what theyll be getting. A huge turkey dinner with everything from soup to nuts from the turkey to the delicious apple pie, theres toys for the kids as well as gifts that the center will be able to use year round.
