knee. the graft is threaded through the holes anchored by screws and in time senate says the replacement acl will actually be stronger than the original. >> this is an injury where it will require surgery and it will require a rehabilitation but you expect him to be back on the playing field next year and that he will make a full recovery from this. >> reporter: within days maybe even just hours of the surgery, wentz will be up and physical therapy will begin says penn's justin shaganau. >> they start right away stationary bike range of motion reducing swelling balance exercises. >> reporter: for top athletes like wentz the therapy will be intense five days a week but studies show nfl qb's have a high recovery rate. >> i can't remember the exact study but 13 to 14 nfl quarterbacks in the more recent times that underwent acl reconstruction all returned to the same level of performance based on stats the season they returned. >> reporter: so, we've seen the prognosis is going to be pretty good here though recovery times can vary from patient to patient we're told. that was stressed several times today but certainly many, many months of recovery, sometimes as much as a year or so. actual its a fairly common injury nationwide here. 100,000 cases are reported here in the united states in a given year. however, of course it becomes news when it's the top tier >> reporter: well, monica, maybe you should calm it the carson effect but fans we talked to were surprisingly optimistic even with their star quarterback out for the remainder of the season. here at modell's and other places we went, eagles fans told us they don't think anybody should be counting out the birds quite yet. >> spirit isn't down in any fashion. >> reporter: on this play, carson wentz went down hard and now he's out for the season. but we found eagles fans are not down and out today. sure they're not thrilled to be losing the franchise quarterback. >> good feelings throughout the and as an eagles fan i love this team regardless if they do well or don't. if they lose every game i'm still a eagles fan. >> reporter: fans we talked to don't think they'll lose. they have confidence in this team and they like what they saw last night from backup nick foles. they still believe this is a team bound for the super bowl. >> i still think it is. i still think it is and if they -- it's even more now because they're going to do it for carson. >> the eagles are destined to at least make it to the super bowl. why? because you see we lost our quarterback, right, and we still won. you more about the suspect in this morning's attempted terror attack in new york city's subway system. 27-year-old akayed ullah had a for hire license but was not licensed to drive yellow taxis that are so popular around the city. police believe he may have been a lone wolf who used online instructions to create a pipe bomb that he strapped to his chest. fortunately it failed to detonate properly. four people were hurt including ullah had who suffered burns and cuts to his hands and abdomen. officials say this act of terror will not deter this city's resolve. >> we will go forward and we'll go forward together. all the service will resume. let's go back to work. we're not going to allow them to disrupt us. that's exactly what they want. and that is exactly what they're not going to get. >> police say ullah was inspired by isis but apparently had no direct contact with the terror organization. >> tonight the pentagon says it will allow transgender people to join the military despite opposition from president trump. back in july, the president said transgender people will be banned from the armed forces. however, under the new policy enlistment of transgender recruits can still begin on january 1st. however, they will be required to pass a lengthy set of physical, medical and mental evaluations first. in world news tonight with david muir much more on the pentagon's move to the calm before the cold that's coming midweek so get ready as we take a live look a at the rothman rink down at dillworth park. a lot of folks skating in the nice weather it's appropriate to do so in these conditions. meteorologist cecily tynan is at the "action news" big board with the latest on accuweather. kind of the cool before the cold cecily. >> that's right rick. double scan live showing our next system that will be affecting us is already moving through the midwest. it's low pressure. it's south of chicago. doesn't have much moisture to work with and what this low pressure will do is move up to the north. so, first it pulls in warmer air and then it pulls down much cooler air. today it's seasonably cool. philadelphia currently 40 degrees. temperatures a little bit warmer to the south across virginia, mid to upper 40's. we pull that in tomorrow. should manage to make it up to about 47 degrees but then tomorrow night and wednesday a cold front will open the door for the coldest air mass of the season. we've got temperatures actually below zero up to the north. that will moderate but it is going to be very harsh especially on wednesday. so, this is what to expect. the winds will really howl tuesday night and wednesday behind that cold front. could have wind gusts up to about 45, 50 miles per hour. afternoon highs mid to late week only in the 30's and i am tracking the chance of more snow showers especially thursday and friday. i'll talk about that in the accuweather forecast. rick. >> all right, busy week for you. thank you, cecily. in other news an accused serial child molester who was set to go on trial today instead pled guilty to all 51 felony counts. william charles thomas admitted to charges including child rape happening 58d assault and child pornography a judge sentenced him to 60 to 120 years in prison plus an additional 40 to 80 years. the crimes involve at least six women who were abused while they were younger. authorities say thomas also kept souvenirs of his conquests inside his levittown trailer. chopper6 was over broad and race streets in center city this morning. that's where police say a man jumped from a parking garage in an attempted suicide. what happened was a man ended uplanding on a white vehicle that was moving at the time. you can see the car with its cracked windshield below. we still don't know if the man survived or if anyone in the car was hurt. >> time right now for a check of the "action news" traffic report. >> all right, matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center monday night. how is the weekend matt. >> weekend was good but this afternoon we're watching some major jersey jams, rick and monica, thanks to this. a truck on its side here in harrison township. we had chopper6 live over the overturned truck. 322 interchange. a really busy interchange in the afternoons and all these southbound drivers are stuck using only the right lane. left lane is out of commission because of that flipped over truck here on 55 southbound at 322. let's go to the maps. you can see the speeds that are resulting there. not so pretty. right around, oh, 9 miles per hour right now and now there's a second accident in the backlog, back in sewell, it's southbound near 47 where the left lane is also blocked there. so, a couple of accidents, both blocking the left lane on 55 and southbound. avoid it coming south of 42. you want to use 47 delsea drive, 45 or the southbound turnpike, not 55 this afternoon. crash on 130 at the collingswood circle has cleared as has the crash on the mlk, west river drive. just reopened a few minutes ago by montgomery drive but now there's a broken down vehicle here on 422 westbound side by phoenixville collegeville sticking out into the left lane. if you're headed towards the outlets to do some shopping it's extra busy on 422. a bad crash along germantown pike westbound side near swede road. we'll check it again rick and monica, coming up in the next forward with their stories. they detailed their stories during a press conference in new york. one says she was a receptionist at trump tower when trump forcibly kissed kissed her. more than a dozen women have come forward with accusations. the women are calling on congress to open an investigation. president trump denies the allegations calling them lies. >> well, celebrity chef and tv host mario batali is the latest public figure to face allegations of sexual misconduct. the online site eater new york says batali has been accused by at least four women. batali says he takes full responsibility and is deeply sorry for any pain he has caused. in light of these allegations batali will step away from the daily operations at his restaurant empire. he's also taking leave from his a today held public hearings on its bid for the site for amazon's new headquarters. "action news" was there as the hearing got under way inside council chambers. members testified philadelphia would be a prime location for amazon's second headquarters and would bring thousands of new jobs to the region and also be a game changer for the city. youngsters gave high 5's to volunteers at mercer county this afternoon. governor christie administration officials gave their time as part of the seventh annual season of service. they delivered delivered holiday gifts to kids at home front. community service events like this one will take place throughout the entire month of december. meteorologist cecily tynan has the frigid forecast for us this week. >> by wednesday really cold. tomorrow not too bad though. let's head over to the "action news" weather center and show you look at this shot. this is the sun setting from okay wood beach, new jersey in salem county, william posted that on my facebook page. beautiful sunset on a day that really isn't all that harsh. temperatures today in the 40's close to where we should be for this time of the year. philadelphia right now it's 40 degrees, trenton has dropped to 38. atlantic city airport 37. allentown 36. and reading 37 degrees. if you look at the temperatures though in the overnight hours you'll notice that we do reach a low close to midnight, never even dropped down to freezing in philadelphia. and then temperatures will start trending up in the wee hours of the morning ahead of a cold front and tomorrow actually will be relatively mild for mid-december standards. satellite and radar showing we're not going to see much sunshine at all tomorrow. the clouds are rolling in. there are a few scattered showers out to the west and we could see a little bit of this activity overnight. not much moisture. future tracker showing 8 o'clock tomorrow morning, plenty of clouds could have a shower generally north and west, perhaps mixing with some wet snow in allentown. the poconos could end up getting an inch or two from this system and then by the afternoon the actual cold front moves through. some cloud cover, perhaps a spotty shower, perhaps a spot knee snow shower in -- spotty snow shower. the big impact will be the temperatures. by 8 o'clock tuesday night it's clear, it's windy and it's getting cold. take a jacket tomorrow morning. you won't really need it that much in the morning. it's 42 degrees by 7:00. then temperatures hovering in the made to mid to upper 40's. look what happens by 7 o'clock. the temperature down to 37 degrees but the winds really picking up so 7 o'clock tomorrow night, these are the wind chills. wind chills will be generally in the teens and wednesday through the day having wind gusts up to about 45, 50 miles per hour. future tracker showing 7 o'clock wednesday morning we've got wind chills in the single digits across most of our suburbs. below zero in the poconos and wind chills stuck in the teens through the day on wednesday. it's going to be bitter. so, the five day at 5:00 showing tomorrow it will be mild, a few scattered showers possible as we start hanukkah. 47 degrees. temperatures crash wednesday. the high only 32. feeling like temperatures in the teens with the wind chills. on thursday, a system will bring in some snow showers in the morning. could get a coating to an inch, not a lot. the problem could complicate the morning commute. 36. chance of more snow showers on friday. 34. and saturday mixture of clouds and sun with a high of 40. temperatures will trend up on sunday though. adam will talk about that in the quarterback carson wentz is out for the season with a torn acl. coach pederson says don't lose hope. we'll hear what he says about the rest of the season coming up in sports. the so-called thomas fire in california is now the fifth largest wildfire in that state's history and it's being fueled by santa ana winds and low humidity. we've got the latest. and a chester county couple has a message for the thief who stole their tree. you also stole a memory of their deceased son. >> now the details of that stolen tree. a coatesville family planted it years ago when their son was just a little boy and they hoped to use it as their big christmas tree one day. now that tree is gone just as the family notes the eighth anniversary of their son's unexpected death. walter perez joins us live from the family home with more. so sad for them. >> reporter: no doubt, monica and you'll see a lot of emotions in the story but you'll also see there is no resentment. if there were two things that david turner jr. of coatesville loved, they were christmas and veterans to help foster that love of christmas, david and his dad planted an evergreen sapling in the backyard when david was nine years old. the promise was to let it grow and then bring it inside for a special christmas in the future. as far as his love for veterans mr. turner says david took that matter into his own hands. >> he worked at the coatesville va had a lot of are for the veterans he served. >> reporter: that ended back in 2009 when david at the age of 20 suddenly died of an undie ticketed heart arrhythmia. david it's parents have formed a charity called david's drive which collects and donates basic supplies like soap candy even underwear for homeless and disabled veterans. officials from the v a. say it's a fitting way to honor david's memory. >> we give them everything that they need but those special items are provided to us through david's drive and the veterans are extremely grateful. >> reporter: the other thing to help keep david's memory alive was that little evergreen that is until a few days ago when the turners say someone walked onto their property, cut it down and took it for their own. mr. turner says he didn't even notice it was gone until this weekend. >> i took a look at it and they just -- they came prepared with a saw and -- and helped themselves to it. >> reporter: turner adds he honestly wants the person who took it to keep it. >> i hope your children are sitting under the tree on christmas morning and have a best christmas of their lives. >> reporter: but turner did feel compelled to leave this little christmas tree on on his son's grave so in some small way he was able to keep his promise. now, the turners say they have received many officers to replace that tree. they say they appreciate it but they tone want to replace that tree. they say if the story moves you, find a reputable charity benefiting veterans and make a donation honoring david's memory. reporting live from coatesville, walter perez channel6 "action news." monica. >> thank you, walter. a man answered a knock at his door last night and says two people just stormed in with a gun. the terror began at 11 o'clock here in the 100 block of west logan street in philadelphia's germantown section. the victim says the man and woman ransacked his home and then ordered him into his own vehicle while driving around they picked up a third person and drove to a convenience store. there they forced the victim to withdraw money from an atm before they took off in his vehicle. >> out west firefighters in california are struggling to contain the so-called thomas fire tonight. so far it's engulfed over 230,000 acres making it the fifth largest wildfire in that state's history. abc's danya bacchus joins us from los angeles with the latest on that devastating fire that's been burning for over a week now. danya. >> reporter: that's right, rick and just this weekend more than 2,000 additional firefighters joined the fight in the thomas fire. 8500 in total have come from multiple states. for a week, the thomas fire has burned ferociously and continues to show no signs of letting up. now the fifth largest wildfire in california history. charring more than 350 square miles, an area larger than new york city. >> my neighbor across the street pounded on my door at 3 o'clock in the morning debbie get out. debbie back your stuff get out. >> reporter: the fire forcing into santa barbara county prompting evacuations for more than 30,000 residents. among them actor rob low. >> praying for the people in my area, hope everybody is getting out safe like we are. >> reporter: this time lapse video showing a plume of smoke rising over ventura and santa barbara in just 30 minutes. nearly 800 structures there have been destroyed with 18,000 still at risk. some residents returning home to find nothing is left. >> oh, my god. right here oh, my god. >> reporter: monday there's now some hope for the rest of southern california. crews have gained the upper hand on the other fires but as this smoke clears the devastation remains. >> i'm heartbroken but i'm -- we're thankful that we're alive and that's the most important thing. >> reporter: and one of the reasons it's been so hard to fight the thomas fire, officials say it's because it is burning in areas that have never been burned in recorded history. the state has spent more than $34 million to suppress that fire. rick. >> all right, danya, thank you for that report from california. matt gutmann will have more on the massive inferno and the evacuations coming up tonight on world world news tont with david muir. >> a group of latino officials is asking congress to send more money to puerto rico. 10 officials signed their names on this letter during a news conference at philadelphia city hall. they expressed concerns about proposed changes to the tax code that would affect puerto rico's economy they say. the island as you know was hit hard by hurricane maria in september and is still trying to recover. the ballroom at the ben in center city was packed for the gobi awards. philadelphia mayor jim kenney one of the speakers. the awards recognize globally active learners who have that distinguished themselves through extraordinary work done in greater philadelphia. >> and from our delaware news room a new initiative helping people with autism find work. delmarva power has teamed up with the precisionist company which creates jobs for individuals with a broad range of disabilities. they'll be trained through the precisionist and then will carry out project based work for delmarva power. individuals will manage and update databases as well as enter and analyze data for the company's customer care liking what i'm seeing here in gloucester county. if there's one spot i want you to avoid this evening it's route 55. southbound side is a mess with multiple accidents, three of them now. the biggest of which is an overturned truck southbound right by 322 in harrison township. that still has the left lane blocked and then in the backlog in sewell there was another crash southbound near 47. that one's gone now but you're still looking at speeds in the teens basically the whole way back to deptford at this point. avoid southbound 55. use del delsea delsea drive, 47, the southbound turnpike, use anything other than 55 there in gloucester county. in burlington county got a broken down vehicle partially blocking the ramp from 295 and southbound to rancocas woods delran. you can squeeze by but it's a tight fit there. and you don't want to head for the burlington bristol bridge. that's going to be going up right around 6 o'clock so start heading for that turnpike connector instead. speaking of crossing the river in newtown bucks county bad crash along 332 at the newtown bypass. speeds like just 12 miles per hour there. and over on 422, we're still watching this disabled vehicle sticking out into the left lane westbound in the normally busy spot by phoenixville collegeville so it's extra slow there. in lionville a bad crash along 113. that's right at dowlin forge road. back confirmed today. carson wentz has a tear to the acl in his left knee. his season is done. the eagles season of course is not. wentz suffered that injury in the third quarter of the win over the rams. he somehow managed to get out for more plays for leaving for good. nick foles is now the starter of this 11 and two football team. coach doug pederson says no matter the quarterback the super bowl remains the goal. >> there's still a lot to play for and that's what's exciting about the rest of this season. we're still playing for that opportunity to hopefully be in that game and nick has played a ton of football and i was here when we grafted him and we drafted him for a reason and we went out and got him again this off season for a reason and you never want it to be under these circumstances but at the same time, you know, um, my confidence is extremely high in nick. you saw what he did in that game last night. >> coach also had a message for the fans. "you can't lose faith." ron jaworski agrees. i spoke with jaws earlier today. >> ♪ jaws, a tainted victory. how devastating of a blow is it to lose carson wentz. >> well its a very significant loss. carson wentz was playing at m.v.p. level. he had the eagles offense really hitting their stride as the season wore on. when you lose a quarterback playing as well as carson was playing it can really make that hill a lot higher to climb. >> the eagles obviously have lost a lot of talented players this season but how does doug pederson not let this loss be a black cloud over the rest of the players. >> players have very simple slogan next man up. coaches have very simple slogan, next man up. the next man up is nick foles he foles. he has to get the job done. it's up to the eagles players to rally around nick foles. there's nothing you can do about carson wentz. nick foles is now the guy. >> in 213 he had a tremendous season. not the same quarterback. is he serviceable enough to get the job done? pivots. >> the foot is planted the body rotates and that's when the acl tears. >> reporter: the good news it can be repaired. a trip of tend can become a graph. holes are drilled above and below the knee. the graft is threaded through the holes anchored by screws and in time senate says the replacement acl will actually be stronger than the original. >> this is an injury where it will require surgery and it will require a rehabilitation but you expect him to be back on the playing field next year and that he will make a full recovery from this. >> reporter: within days maybe even just hours of the surgery, wentz will be up and physical therapy will begin says penn's justin shaganau. >> they start right away stationary bike range of motion reducing swelling balance exercises. >> reporter: for top athletes like wentz the therapy will be intense five days a week but studies show nfl qb's have a high recovery rate. >> i can't remember the exact study but 13 to 14 nfl quarterbacks in the more recent times that underwent acl reconstruction all returned to the same level of performance based on stats the season they returned. >> reporter: so, we've seen the prognosis is going to be pretty good here though recovery times can vary from patient to patient we're told. that was stressed several times today but certainly many, many months of recovery, sometimes as much as a year or so. actual its a fairly common injury nationwide here. 100,000 cases are reported here in the united states in a given year. however, of course it becomes news when it's the top tier >> reporter: well, monica, maybe you should calm it the carson effect but fans we talked to were surprisingly optimistic even with their star quarterback out for the remainder of the season. here at modell's and other places we went, eagles fans told us they don't think anybody should be counting out the birds quite yet. >> spirit isn't down in any fashion. >> reporter: on this play, carson wentz more about the suspect in this morning's attempted terror attack in new york city's subway system. 27-year-old akayed ullah had a for hire license but was not licensed to drive yellow taxis that are so popular around the city. police believe he may have been a lone wolf who used online instructions to create a pipe bomb that he strapped to his chest. fortunately it failed to detonate properly. four people were hurt including ullah had who suffered burns and cuts to his hands and abdomen. officials say this act of terror will not deter this city's resolve. >> we will go forward and we'll go opposition from president trump. back in july, the president said transgender people will be banned from the armed forces. however, under the new policy enlistment of transgender recruits can still the calm before the cold that's coming midweek so get ready as we take a live look a at the rothman rink down at dillworth park. a lot of folks skating in the nice weather it's appropriate to do so in these conditions. meteorologist cecily tynan is at the "action news" big board with the latest on accuweather. kind of the cool before the cold cecily. >> that's right rick. double scan live showing our next system that will be affecting us is already moving through the midwest. it's low pressure. it's south of chicago. doesn't have much moisture to work with and what this low pressure will do is move up to the north. so, first it pulls in warmer air and then it pulls down much cooler air. today it's seasonably cool. philadelphia currently 40 degrees. temperatures a little bit warmer to the south across virginia, mid to upper 40's. we pull that in tomorrow. should manage to make it up to about 47 degrees but then tomorrow night and wednesday a cold front will open the door for the coldest air mass of the season. we've got temperatures actually below zero up to the north. that will moderate but it is going to be very harsh especially on wednesday. so, this is what to expect. the winds will really howl tuesday night and wednesday behind that cold front. could have wind gusts up to about 45, 50 miles per hour. afternoon highs mid to late week only in the 30's and i am tracking the chance of more snow showers especially thursday and friday. i'll talk about that in the accuweather forecast. rick. >> all right, busy week for you. thank you, cecily. in other news an accused serial child molester who was set to go on trial today instead pled guilty to all 51 felony counts. william charles thomas admitted to charges including child rape happening 58d assault and child pornography a judge sentenced him to 60 to 120 years in prison plus an additional 40 to 80 years. the crimes involve at least six women who were abused while they were younger. authorities say thomas also kept souvenirs of his conquests inside his levittown trailer. chopper6 was over broad and race streets in center city this morning. that's where police say a man jumped from a parking garage in an attempted suicide. what happened was a man ended uplanding on a white vehicle that was moving at the time. you can see the car with its cracked windshield below. we still don't know if the man survived or if anyone in the car was hurt. >> time right now for a check of the "action news" traffic report. >> all right, matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center monday night. how is the weekend matt. >> weekend was good but this afternoon we're watching some major jersey jams, rick and monica, thanks to this. a truck on its side here in harrison township. we had chopper6 live over the overturned truck. 322 interchange. a really busy interchange in the afternoons and all these southbound drivers are stuck using only the right lane. left lane is out of commission because of that flipped over truck here on 55 southbound at 322. let's go to the maps. you can see the speeds that are resulting there. not so pretty. right around, oh, 9 miles per hour right now and now there's a second accident in the backlog, back in sewell, it's southbound near 47 where the left lane is also blocked there. so, a couple of accidents, both blocking the left lane on 55 and southbound. avoid it coming south of 42. you want to use 47 delsea drive, 45 or the southbound turnpike, not 55 this afternoon. crash on 130 at the collingswood circle has cleared as has the crash on the mlk, west river drive. just reopened a few minutes ago by montgomery drive but now there's a broken down vehicle here on 422 westbound side by phoenixville collegeville sticking out into the left lane. if you're headed towards the outlets to do some shopping it's extra busy on 422. a bad crash along germantown pike westbound side near swede road. we'll check it again rick and monica, coming up in the next this shot. this is the sun setting from okay wood beach, new jersey in salem county, william posted that on my facebook page. beautiful sunset on a day that really isn't all that harsh. temperatures today in the 40's close to where we should be for this time of the year. philadelphia right now it's 40 degrees, trenton has dropped to 38. atlantic city airport 37. allentown 36. and reading 37 degrees. if you look at the temperatures though in the overnight hours you'll notice that we do reach a low close to midnight, never even dropped down to freezing in philadelphia. and then temperatures will start trending up in the wee hours of the morning ahead of a cold front and tomorrow actually will be relatively mild for mid-december standards. satellite and radar showing we're not going to see much sunshine at all tomorrow. the clouds are rolling in. there are a few scattered showers out to the west and we could see a little bit of this activity overnight. not much moisture. future tracker showing 8 o'clock tomorrow morning, plenty of clouds could have a shower generally north and west, perhaps mixing with some wet snow in allentown. the poconos could end up getting an inch or two from this system and then by the afternoon the actual cold front moves through. some cloud cover, perhaps a spotty shower, perhaps a spot knee snow shower in -- spotty snow shower. the big impact will be the temperatures. by 8 o'clock tuesday night it's clear, it's windy and it's getting cold. take a jacket tomorrow morning. you won't really need it that much in the morning. it's 42 degrees by 7:00. then temperatures hovering in the made to mid to upper 40's. look what happens by 7 o'clock. the temperature down to 37 degrees but the winds really picking up so 7 o'clock tomorrow night, these are the wind chills. wind chills will be generally in the teens and wednesday through the day having wind gusts up to about 45, 50 miles per hour. future tracker showing 7 o'clock wednesday morning we've got wind chills in the single digits across most of our suburbs. below zero in the poconos and wind chills stuck in the teens through the day on wednesday. it's going to be bitter. so, the five day at 5:00 showing tomorrow it will be mild, a few scattered showers possible as we start hanukkah. 47 degrees. temperatures crash wednesday. the high only 32. feeling like temperatures in the teens with the wind chills. on thursday, a system will bring in some snow showers in the morning. could get a coating to an inch, not a lot. the problem could complicate the morning commute. 36. chance of more snow showers on friday. 34. and saturday mixture of clouds and sun with a high of 40. temperatures will trend up on sunday though. adam will talk about that in the quarterback carson wentz is out for the season with a torn acl. coach pederson says don't lose hope. we'll hear what he says about the rest of the season coming up in sports. the so-called thomas fire in california is now the fifth largest wildfire in that state's history and it's being fueled by santa ana winds and low humidity. we've got the latest. and a chester county couple has a message for the thief who stole their tree. you also stole a memory of their deceased son. >> now the details of that stolen tree. a coatesville family planted it years ago when their son was just a little boy and they hoped to use it as their big christmas tree one day. now that tree is gone just as the family notes the eighth anniversary of their son's unexpected death. walter perez joins us live from the family home with more. so sad for them. >> reporter: no doubt, monica and you'll see a lot of emotions in the story but you'll also see there is no resentment. if there were two things that david turner jr. of coatesville loved, they were christmas and veterans to help foster that love of christmas, david and his dad planted an evergreen sapling in the backyard when david was nine years old. the promise was to let it grow and then bring it inside for a special christmas in the future. as far as his love for veterans mr. turner says david took that matter into his own hands. >> he worked at the coatesville va had a lot of are for the veterans he served. >> reporter: that ended back in 2009 when david at the age of 20 suddenly died of an undie ticketed heart arrhythmia. david it's parents have formed a charity called david's drive which collects and donates basic supplies like soap candy even underwear for homeless and disabled veterans. officials from the v a. say it's a fitting way to honor david's memory. >> we give them everything that they need but those special items are provided to us through david's drive and the veterans are extremely grateful. >> reporter: the other thing to help keep david's memory alive was that little evergreen that is until a few days ago when the turners say someone walked onto their property, cut it down and took it for their own. mr. turner says he didn't even notice it was gone until this weekend. >> i took a look at it and they just -- they came prepared with a saw and -- and helped themselves to it. >> reporter: turner adds he honestly wants the person who took it to keep it. >> i hope your children are sitting under the tree on christmas morning and have a best christmas of their lives. >> reporter: but turner did feel compelled to leave this little christmas tree on on his son's grave so in some small way he was able to keep his promise. now, the turners say they have received many officers to replace that tree. they say they appreciate it but they tone want to replace that tree. they say if the story moves you, find a reputable charity benefiting veterans and make a donation honoring david's memory. reporting live from coatesville, walter perez channel6 "action news." monica. >> thank you, walter. a man answered a knock at his door last night and says two people just stormed in with a gun. the terror began at 11 o'clock here in the 100 block of west logan street in philadelphia's germantown section. the victim says the man and woman ransacked his home and then ordered him into his own vehicle while driving around they picked up a third person and drove to a convenience store. there they forced the victim to withdraw money from an atm before they took off in his vehicle. >> out west firefighters in california are struggling to contain the so-called thomas fire tonight. so far it's engulfed over 230,000 acres making it the fifth largest wildfire in that state's history. abc's danya bacchus joins us from los angeles with the latest on that devastating fire that's been burning for over a week now. danya. >> reporter: that's right, rick and just this weekend more than 2,000 additional firefighters joined the fight in the thomas fire. 8500 in total have come from multiple states. for a week, the thomas fire has burned ferociously and continues to show no signs of letting up. now the fifth largest wildfire in california history. charring more than 350 square miles, an area larger than new york city. >> my neighbor across the street pounded on my door at 3 o'clock in nearly 800 structures there have been destroyed with 18,000 still at risk. some residents returning home to find nothing is left. >> oh, my god. right here oh, my god. >> reporter: monday there's now some hope for the rest of southern california. crews have gained the upper hand on the other fires but as this smoke clears the devastation remains. >> i'm heartbroken but i'm -- we're thankful that we're alive and that's the most important thing. >> reporter: and one of the reasons it's been so hard to fight the thomas fire, officials say it's because it is burning in areas that have never been their names on this letter during a news conference at philadelphia city hall. they expressed concerns about proposed changes to the tax code that would affect puerto rico's economy they say. the of which is an overturned truck southbound right by 322 in harrison township. that still has the left lane blocked and then in the backlog in sewell there was another crash southbound near 47. that one's gone now but you're still looking at speeds in the teens basically the whole way back to deptford at this point. avoid southbound 55. use del delsea delsea drive, 47, the southbound turnpike, use anything other than 55 there in gloucester county. in burlington county got a broken down vehicle partially blocking the ramp from 295 and southbound to rancocas woods delran. you can squeeze by but it's a tight fit there. and you don't want to head for the burlington bristol bridge. that's going to be going up right around 6 o'clock so start heading for that turnpike connector instead. speaking of crossing the river in newtown bucks county bad crash along 332 at the newtown bypass. speeds like just 12 miles per hour there. and over on 422, we're still watching this disabled vehicle sticking out into the left lane westbound in the normally busy spot by phoenixville collegeville so it's extra slow there. in lionville a bad crash along 113. that's right at dowlin forge road. back he somehow managed to get out for more plays for leaving for good. nick foles is now the starter of this 11 and two football team. coach doug pederson says no matter the quarterback the super bowl remains the goal. >> there's still a lot to play for and that's what's exciting about the rest of this season. we're still playing for that opportunity to hopefully be in that game and nick has played a ton of football and i was here when we grafted him and we drafted him for a reason and we went out and got him again this off season for a reason and you never want it to be under these circumstances but at the same time, you know, um, my confidence is extremely high in nick. you saw what he did in that game last night. >> coach also had a message for the fans.
