All right, health check tonight, its that time of year, time to roll up your sleeves and get a flu shot. Health officials recommend most adults and kids over six months old should get a flu shot. And this year they say doing it early is best to protect yourself and your family. Health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman joins us at the big board with more. Hi, ali. Yeah, its flu shot time and its also the time of year that we start to hear a lot of myths about the flu shot. The more people that get vaccinated the better off everyone in the community is going to be. Like many viruses the flu is unpredictable but based on what weve seen in australia its possible we could see a severe season that hits early. Thats why Health Officials want to get people vaccinated before the end of october and also not to underestimate how dangerous the flu virus can be. I think we tend to forget that the flu is a very serious illness. And every year hundreds of thousands of people are hospitalized in the United States and unfortunately there may be somewhere between 4,000 and 40,000 people who die of influenza every year. Hi friends, ali gorman there. Early this week i hosted a Facebook Live chat with Philadelphia Health commissioner dr. Tom farley. We broke down a few common misconceptions. People say i dont want to get it because i got it last year and it gave me the flu. The flu shot protects you against the flu. At worst, you had a sore arm. Another misconception is that you dont need a flu shot every year. You need to get vaccinated against flu every year because the flu viruses can change from year to year and our immunity to flu viruses goes down in between each injection. The flu shot is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family. Its especially important for young kids to get vaccinated because theyre more likely to spread the flu. Monica and rick, back over to you. It does leave your arm kind of sore but its worth it. Got mine yesterday. Unless youre very muscular. Oh, yeah. Who worries about that. No ad libbing ali, all right. Thank you. Delaware county students got an important lesson today from an interactive traveling show.
