But its going to be a long road ahead. Its not going to be a quick solution. As the president takes heat for tweets criticizing san juans mayor. How shes responding. And scare in the air. Passengers capturing this video over the atlantic ocean. An engine starting to disintegrate. It was terrifying. The airbus making an Emergency Landing in canada as an investigation gets under way. And good morning, everybody. Our team thanks you so much for joining us on this sunday. As we come on the air, a number of breaking stories. Including the attack in canada, being investigated as an act of terror. Police say they found an isis flag in a car that slammed into a Police Barricade, hitting an officer. Were going to have much more on that coming up. We will. Were going to start here with the release in the dead of the night of o. J. Simpson. There he is leaving Lovelock Correctional Center. He is now a free man. He served nine years for a botched hotel room heist in las vegas. Hes now 70 years old and looking at many years of parole supervision. But the big question right now, where will he live . That is the question. Wherever he lives, hell face a lot of scrutiny as man who went from a football giant, to a tv man and pitchman, to the defendant in the trial of the century. Involving the murders of his exwife, nicole, and her friend, ron goldman. Lets get the latest from kenneth moton. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning, paula and dan. This after midnight sunday release was rare for the Nevada Department of corrections. But this is a rare and unique case. This is the scene of the crime behind me. That Las Vegas Hotel where o. J. Simpson committed that robbery to get back his memorabilia. This city is also the place he could return as he awaits a parole transfer to florida. Come on out. Okay. Reporter this morning, o. J. Simpson is a free man. A first look at the infamous former sports and movie star walking out of a nevada prison near reno under the cover of darkness. We thought lets do this quietly. And and just try to be under the radar. Reporter Lovelock Correctional Center posed this image of simpson, in all denim, white sneakers. We brought him out. He signed a few pages of release paperwork. We give everybody some sort of paperwork on their parole and where theyre supposed to check in and all that sort of thing. Reporter simpsons release after serving naive years for Armed Robbery surrounded by speculation and drama. His mug shot disappeared from the corrections website early saturday. The prison nor his rips confirming his whereabouts. Ive done my time. I would like to get back to my family and friends. Reporter the decision to grant him parole sparked criticism. From the family of ron goldman. Whats troubling to me is not only him but the whole system gives Second Chances to violent felons, or for that matter, anyone in jail. Reporter now the big question, where will simpson go . The plan, florida. But the states attorney general pam bondi is objecting saying, our state should not become a country club for this convicted prisoner. Reporter the details of simpslso simpsons post prison life a mystery. Not for long. Hes not going to hide. Hell be around. People see him. Hes going to live his life. Reporter simpsons florida plans are up in the air. Hell remain in this state for now. Simpsons lawyer and the department of corrections, they said it was possible that he would be released during the week on a business day. But it was obvious they were trying to avoid security concerns and that media circus. Dan and paula . Kenneth moton. Kenneth, thank you. Lets bring in civil rights lawyer gloria allred, who represented the family of nicole brown at the time of the trial. Gloria, thank you for coming on. Thank you for having me. Lets get your reaction. Should o. J. Simpson have been released at all . In your view . No, this is an absolute disgrace. The parole board asked him about conflicts. He said he led a conflictfree life. Its not a conflictfree life when he was convicted in 1989 of spousal battery of nicole when he left her with a black eye, a swollen face, a cut lip. Its not a conflictfree life when the squurry in the civil case found that punitive damages should be awarded against him. Damages to punish him because they found he was liable, responsible for the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and the death of ronald goal mand, m goldman, may they rest in peace. Not a conflictfree life when he was convicted of numerous felonies in nevada. This is an absolute disgrace. They should have considered those Domestic Violence convictions and the ultimate violence, the killing of two human beings which shocked the conscience of the community. And thats why punitive damages were awarded. But gloria, right now, the big question is, where does he go . Because hes a free man. We are expecting him to go to florida. Where his kids are. But the attorney general says hes not welcome. Can the state of florida or any state prevent him from living there . I think its possible and probable that they can. Because he has to apply to live in florida. He is on parole. You say hes a free man. But hes not a free man in the sense of the rest of us are free. He has to obey all laws. He has to be supervised on parole. If florida doesnt want to accept him, i dont see how they can send him to florida. Right now, hes going to remain in nevada. Unless and until florida changes their mind. Gloria, you mentioned the money from the civil trial that o. J. Lost. Will the families of Nicole Brown Simpson and ron goldman ever see that money . By one estimate, were talking 65 million. Those lawsuits in the civil case were on behalf of the estate of Nicole Brown Simpson. The estate of ronald goldman. By the way, the beneficiaries of the estate of nicole brown children are the children, sidney and justin, his own children. As to the estate of ron goldman, of course, there were no children. So, his dad, his parents, could be the beneficiaries. They could go after him. If he has income that is not protected. That is not sheltered. He can live off his 25,000 a month nfl pension. They cannot touch that. If, in fact, however, he earns other income from other sources, then they can go after that. And i have no doubt that ron goldmans father will. All right, gloria allred. We want to thank you so much for your perspective this morning. Thank you. Thanks for joining us. We want to turn now to another breaking story this morning. A possible new terror attack in canada. Man a man stabbing a Police Officer then ramming into pedestrians with a truck during a highspeed chase. Ron is here covering that story. Ron, good morning. Reporter these are two separate incidents hours apart. Saturday night. The ramming of the Police Barricade. And later, the vehicle mowing down pedestrians. Police say it was one suspect that did this. And that the motive appears right now to have been terrorism. It happened near commonwealth stadium in edmonton, where a Canadian League pro Football Game was being played. The suspect driving this white car at a high rate of speed barreled through a Police Barricade outside the stadium, striking a Police Officer. That driver got out of the car and went on the attack. Stabbing a Police Officer several times. Police on the scene were able to identify the driver from the vehicles registration. The male suspect stabbed the officer several times. Before fleeing the scene on foot. Reporter several hours later, at a police checkpoint, officers stopped a uhaul moving truck. And noticed the name on the drivers license was similar to the suspect they were looking for. The uhaul truck fled the scene. And was pursued by Police Officers towards that downtown edmonton. Reporter police say the driver of the uhaul truck took off. Intentionally running down pedestrians on the way. At least four people were struck. Theyre being treated at the hospital. Officials say the two incidents are related. And say they also found this flag, what they described being an isislike flag on the the dashboard of the car that crashed outside the football stadium. Theyre investigating the incidents as a solo act of terrorism. The suspect in police custody. Hes not yet been identified. Canadian Law EnforcementOfficials Say they have no information about any imintercept imminent attack. The Police Officer that was stabbed is expected to survive. Thank you, ron. We turn to the extraordinary war of words between the president of the United States and the female mayor of hurricanebattered san juan, puerto rico. After the mayor criticized the administrations response, the president tweeted out a tough response, creating an online uproar. Well have a report if the ground in puerto rico in a moment. We start here with david wright, in branchburg, new jersey. Near the president s golf course. David, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, dan and paula. The president s getting ready to head down to puerto rico this week. But, the fight he picked with one local official after she dared to criticize the administrations response ensures that the trip could be politically fraught. From the comfort of his golf club here in bedminster, another tweet storm. The president lashed out at san juans mayor. Such poor leadership ability by the mayor of san juan, and others in puerto rico, who are not able to get their workers to help, he tweeted. They want everything to be done for them. When it should be a community effort. 10,000 federal workers now on the island doing a fantastic job. This is a time when everyone shows their true colors. I have no time for distractions. Reporter the mayor spent part of her saturday wading the streets. Using a bull horn to reach stranded residents. I hope he gets a chance to really look at people. Look at peoples faces. See them drinking from a creek. Reporter trump suggested her criticism of the administrations response is politically motivated, tweeting the mayor of san juan who was very complimentary only a few days ago, has now been told by the democrats that you must be nasty to trump. Playwright Linmanuel Miranda tweeted. She has been working 24 7. You have been golfing. Youre going straight to hell. Fastest golf cart you ever took. Right now, we e have disasters in 20 different states that were working. Dont forget about harvey. Dont forget about irrma. All the work thats been done. Get rid of the noise. Focus on the progress that weve been that has been made. Reporter late in the day, after a round of phone calls, the president softened his tone. Insisting the administration is working together to help the people of puerto rico in every way. Adding to the people of puerto rico. Do not believe the fake news. Of course the reality of the situation is that most of the people in puerto rico will not be watching the news. Because they dont have power. The president is taking a drubbing online for what people are saying is attacking storm victims, including that strongly worded tweet from Linmanuel Miranda. Dan and paula . Yeah, certainly a lot of criticism direct odd toward the president this morning. Thank you, david, for your reporting. And help is on the way. More troops are expected to arrive soon in puerto rico to help with the monumental relief effort. Alex perez is on the ground in san juan where he spoke with the threestar general in charge of the relief effort. Alex, good morning to you. Reporter hey, good morning, guys. Getting the entire island back on the power grid and making sure people in rural areas are getting the help they need remain the big challenges here. The Lieutenant General in charge tells me theyre working around the clock. This morning, Lieutenant GeneralJeffrey Buchanan in charge of the military response in puerto rico calls the hurricane damage here some of the worst he has ever seen. Its not going to be a quick solution. Its not going to be easy. Were going to be after it until theyre back on their feet. Reporter 4600 troops on the ground right now. Some 10,000 people remain in shelters. Twothirds of residents still dont have cell service. Lives still in peril as hospitals desperately need fuel. So its absolutely critical to get fuel there right now so the generators can go. Reporter fema launching staging areas, set up with food, water, and other necessitienece. Prepared to deliver 2 million meals. At the ports, finally more commercial supplies moving out for distribution. Headed to store shelves. At every available gas station, endless lines. Waiting for whats become a precious commodity. Nadia, who lives in rural puerto rico, bounced from station to station for three days to finally be able to fill these two gas canisters. The first day you were in line for 14 hours . Yes. Reporter did you get gas . No, no. Reporter armed officers guarding and escorting tankers. Working to replenish the stations that have gone dry. Officials tell me they have cleared the major highways in the perimeter of the island. Theyre working on the interior roads. Several hundred more troops are expected here in the next few days. Dan . Paula . A slow road to recovery. But a road to recovery nonetheless. Alex, thank you for your reporting. We want to bring in George Stephanopoulos who hosts this week later this morning. Hi, guys. Good morning to you. Thanks for joining us. The president is dealing with three consecutive weather crises. Harvey, then irma, now maria. Some are saying what is going on in puerto rico right now is trumps katrina. Is that fair . Its hard to know how that is going to play out. The president got pretty good reviews in texas and florida. Not so in puerto rico. Whats similar to this and katrina is the president touting of all the good news and good work seems to be at odds with what most people are seeing and feeling on the ground. What is absolutely unprecedented, we have never seen an attack like this on a local official in the middle of a natural disaster. Weve seen the backlash there. How this is going to play out over time is anyones guess. This comes after a turbulent week. The nfl protests against him. His candidate he supported in alabama lost in the senate race. The latest attempt to repeal and replace obamacare went down in flames. And then this scandal over his hhs secretary taking these expensive flikghts on the taxpayers dime. He was fired. Theres been a lot of competition. Some say this is the worst one. Take it all together, what is the state of the Trump Presidency . His Approval Ratings going up after his response to harvey and irma. Now he seems to have hit a wall. Seems to be lashing out. What hes putting all of his chips on now is the effort to have tax cuts. Tax reform to get some kind of legislative accomplishment out of the first year. As you pointed out, with the death of repeal of obamacare, they dont have a major legislative accomplishment. This is a big challenge for the president and the Republican Leaders in congress. Well talk to the treasury secretary about that today. And theres another really big headline this morning. For the first time, the Trump Administration has established direct lines of communication with north korea. What is the way forward there . Its hard to know exactly what those lines of communication are. This came from Rex Tillerson who is in china. Whether it can be a success or not depends on what your goal is. Will talks lead north korea to give up their Nuclear Program . I dont think so. Could they lead to a freeze in the Nuclear Program . Thats something that has to be tested. At a minimum, theres some hope if the talks are taking place, if there really is some kind of back channel communication, it would lessen the chances of some kind of accidental launch of Nuclear Weapons during a crisis. Thats always a good thing. George, thank you. Thanks, george. Always great to see you on a sunday morning. George has a big show this morning. Hell speak to the mayor of puerto rico. Hell go one on one with the treasury secretary steve mnuchin. All coming up on this week. Right here on abc. A busy morning. Over to Robert Marciano for a look at the weather.
