Other. Tonight we have Team Coverage, meteorologist Melissa Magee has the latest on the storms path but we will begin with brian taff in naples in the eye of the storm is passing, brian. Reporter walter and sarah this has been a absolutely surreal hour or two hours, here in naples florida right now. Forgive me as lie around as i stay out of the path of flying debris. We just passed through eye wall, the strongest wins of what was a category three hurricane. We clock the wind of a gust of 142 miles an hour. That is stunning. Wind speed by any measure. Things have incredibly calmed down, from that point, in just the last five minutes. That is how quickly this storm is moving. Five minutes ago we could not see those trees behind me, and now as clear as day. Jason, come on out here survey some of the destruction. From what we have seen in just the last, couple of hours, of these incredible, wind speed, that building behind us is part of its roofies torn off. Jason, go ahead, look down. Those dumpsters on the ground were on the right side of this parking lot, they have shifted 15 to 20 feet to give you a sense of the strength of these winds, and boy these trees, every single one has suffered damage, brain muches down, and been thrown around like match sticks. There were period where it was unsafe for us to be outside and so we decided to give you a time line of irma by taking various point as long the way to give you a look at what it has been like to cover this. Here we are underneath the hotel, obviously that is our vehicle right here. Were in several inches of water right now. We are very well protect from the winds coming from an easterly direction right now, and you see how that has manifested it several inches of rain. Heres what happens when the wind swings in your direction and comes from the west side, off of the gulf of mexico bringing with it that storm surge, up to, 15 feet. We have tried to drive home the point to you that we are in what we feel is a very secure building. Made of cement, built in the early 80s and has withstood a lot of storms. The concern is this, these windows which are single payn ed glass and there is a lot of fear inside this building that as this storm advances the winds get stronger those windows could pop out and crack. That is a fear that manifested itself earlier in this weather event. Take a look here, one of the windows gave way and you can see why. Just about 20 minutes after 3 00 oclock now we expect the eye wall to encounter us in about 13 minutes. We thought we would come outside and give you a sense as to what, the elements are like out here right now. Obviously wind is gusting significantly. We have gusts up to a hundred miles an hour or north of that right now, as the eye wall comes a shore, comes over us, we expect the most intense wind that we have seen so far, and then, blue skies sure to appear above us. It is late but hurricanes dont operate on human time they operate on their own clock. This is eye wall of Hurricane Irma the strongest wind is associated with this storm are happening for us, right now. We have come back inside, backup stairs on this balcony where we are largely shielded, from the winds that are coming around the building but as jason just showed you these wins are incredibly intense gusting north of 120, 130 miles an hour right now. This is the eye wall, of Hurricane Irma. Just to give you a sense of perspective how quickly things changed that last clip we film that about 15 or 20 minutes ago. That is how much things have change. Now, look the sun shining over naples, florida. We are in the eye of this storm right now, what comes next were not quite sure honestly it has been very unpredictable as hard as meteorologist work to predict the path, were not sure what the next several hours hold. We know it will get worse before it gets berth and then major concern is the storm surge. We are expecting nine to 15 feet in naples. A lot of water on the ground right now. As jason is showing you. That is rainwater. We are fearful of what the gulf of mexico may bring our way. We will join you several times tonight, but for now, we will send it back to you, live there in the studio. Quite take scene there in florida. Thank you brian. Strength of the storm is creating all kinds of weird situations. Look at what appears to be water rescue in West Palm Beach. Man standing on lane is pulling in a rescue matt. Person in the water is wearing scuba gear. It is not clear if this was an attempt to help someone not caught on camera but this person in the scuba gear had People Holding on to the line trying to keep him safe. If you have any doubts about what a phenomenon this storm is, look at this, that ace bay but no water there win s pushed water out of the more shallow bays and harbors, this is the view from downtown st. Petersberg. It was shot earlier this afternoon, Officials Say that when wind shifts direction the water will come back, and it could come back very quickly. How about the power of nature right there lets move to meteorologist Melissa Magee who has been tracking this storm all day. That is right walter and sarah. We have seen a couple land falls with irma. First one was this morning at 9 10 this morning with max sustained wind of 130 miles an hour, so it made land fall as category four in cudjoe key florida, in the lower florida keys. It has been 102 years since we had two, category four storms, within the United States. First one as you will remember , Hurricane Harvey that bolterd southeastern coast of texas. We had a second land fall this afternoon with irma in marco island and that was around 3 35 this afternoon. Heres Storm Tracker six live double scan radar 3d. You can see outer rain band with the storm affecting the east coast of florida, as well West Palm Beach, fort lauderdale, down to miami as well but focus on the on the western coast of florida and brian was talking about naples , and being in that eye. Once this eye, lifts to the north of naples, that is when you will get a pick up with the intensity of the winds and you also will get that moisture, backing up, and moving in from the southeasterly side of the storm, on the back side of this storm. So that is when we can expect that storm surge to increase and winds as well. Hurricane irma right now been downgraded to a category two because it is interacting with land. Wind right now 110 miles an hour moving north at 14 miles an hour. This is more than likely going to stay a category one hurricane as it moves across northern florida, eventually into georgia, as a Tropical Storm as we go throughout the rest of our week here. We will talk about the winds we have seen so far and marco island when it did make that land fall, we had winds gusting as high as 130 miles an hour, big pine key, 120 miles an hour winds. Naples airport, 103. 99mile an hour wind gustness miami on the eastern side of the state. Fort lauderdale had wind gusting as high as 78 miles an hour. Lets talk about the impact of irma as we go throughout the rest of tonight through south florida. We have a storm surge from five to 15 feet so a wall of water rushing inland and pushing on shore, rainfall rates anywhere from eight to 20 inches of rain and isolated spots higher then that. Widespread flooding is a concern Severe Weather threat as we already had three reports of tornadoes on the eastern side of the state. More details coming up at, and , eyewitness news. And, 1. 1 Million People in florida are without power, at this hour. It could be days or even weeks , before power is restored. Bunch of local power crews in our area set up for florida. Action News Reporter bob brooks has that. Reporter they have loaded up what they can, water, gator aid, food but is there still so much unknown of what they are heading into. Tonight, 200 peco employees and contractors are on their way south. They departed from the peco station in eddystone, 10 30 this morning. Their destination the damage and destruction sure to be left by Hurricane Irma. As we hoped for the best down south these crews prepared for the worst. Maybe largest Storm Restoration project they have ever faced. Peco Communication Specialist craig moore. We know there will be work to be done. Obviously preparing for the worst, hoping for the best but our crews are standing by, they are making their way down there and they are ready to respond where they are needed most. Reporter what you are seeing right there is last truck to pull out of this caravan of 30 trucks and he said one of the things thermos proud office to be able to go down south to help those companies that helped you during super storm sandy. Absolutely, tremendous built to come down, repay favor, anytime were in need we are able to call on them as well. It is great to repay the favor to those crews that have helped us in the past. Reporter that will go as far south as North Carolina tonight and in the morning they will wake up, and get to work. We were also there as teams left, pse g, they sent 154 employees, heading to florida. And, also, they sent help, officials there also say that is their chance to give back, to so many, who also helped them with restoring the damage left by sandy. Crew is hearsay they are in it for the lock hall no matter what damage brought by this hurricane they will stay down there and get power back on for those people. Reporting from eddiestone, bob brooks, channel six action news. Before irma hit florida, it left a path of destruction in the caribbean. There are still americans stuck in saint martin unable to get out. Action News Reporter Christie Ileto spoke to the mt. Airy family who just got back and joins us live from mt. Airy with their story, christie . Reporter and sarah, still really has not sunk in for this family that they survived Hurricane Irma what was supposed to be a surprise vacation celebrating his wife who just become a registered nurse quickly turned into a fight for their lives. We were scared that we werent coming back. We had no idea, of what was going to happen next. We just heard irma keep beating and tearing down building we were in. It was really devastating. Reporter Michelle Butler barge and her husband were staying at the great bay resort and spa in saint martin when Mother Nature reared a category five hurricane on top of the tiny island. The philadelphia couple hotel room demolished by strong wind and left vulnerable as looters ravage what was left of the hotel. They were eventually rescued by National Guard and made it back to the states, days, after irma struck. At that time, we were just blessed, grateful, thank full, at that time. Everything was going through my mind, that we were going home. We were coming home. We were coming home to our home, to our family. We are going to get home, if not today or next week we will get home, and we have a home to go to and these people here, they have nothing. They lost everything. And now that family very lucky to be alive this evening right now they are not even thinking about themselves but those natives of that country many of whom lost everything this evening. They are newly over. Team that begins with the hopes and dreams of the playoffs and beyond and as an eagles fans there were points of the game where we were thinking super bowl. Other points we were thinking here we go again. In the end a win is a win no matter how we got there carson wentz starting his key Second Season he looked like the franchise quarterback we hoped he would be. Especially escapeability. Wentz, that surprised the defense because Nelson Agholor wide open to open up the scoring, 58yard touchdown. He was great in this game seven to nothing bird. Wentz in this game was tight down to the finish. Eagles up five, 902nd to go, Brandon Graham hits cousins, fletcher cox has a celebration all around. Eagles, force had turnovers they beat redskins 3017. Snapping a five game losing streak, to their nfce rival. Their first win in washington in four years. Hats off to the guys on defense, they battled, they hung in there, they kept our owe even if, you know in, good situations when we took the field. So, great job by our defense. How did you think the offense played today. Just okay. We made some plays. A lot of them were broken play s. We have to obviously look at the film and make the corrections. It wasnt perfect. Too many break downs in some crucial situations. Some drive killers. And so defense, great. Owe even if just okay. We will have much more coming up later in sports and Jeff Skversky is in washington getting reaction right now as we speak. Good to start with the w. Ill take it, for sure. My old coach said sometimes good enough is good enough. Thank you, jamie. Three things on the mind of the eagles fans today, were talking football, football and football. The bonus was beating an nfc east rival that has been giving us problems over the past several years. Anni mccormack is live at chickie and petes in south philadelphia. Way to go. Hi, annis. Im at sixth and washington avenue. You know, talking about the highs and low of eagles fans, it it is always good to be cautiously optimistic. And in particular, this game today. During the sending half, inside chicks on washington avenue, eagles fans lining the bar of the new restaurant, that just opened this past spring. They too were very excited for this eagles game, it is first time they are hosting one here at their new restaurant. After the eagles win against redskins most fans are commend ing Carson Wentzs performance and they are concerned byron old darbys injury. Lets take a listen. I didnt think it was great but i loved the last part. It was, it felt like same old, same old and then they came through at the end. I was expecting this kind of game, close, and then coming to the point at the end , we will pull it out. The high i would probably say defense. The low, it expected them to do a lot better later in the year. Im excited. Reporter and every year when they go out and interview eagles fans, during the first, and second games of the season , we hear everything like highs and lows some people saying super bowl. Some people saying it will happen again. But right now, these fans, possibly, optimistic like i said, they will get a better idea of how season may go next week even, next sunday when eagles will play with the chiefs. Reporting live inside chicks restaurant on washington avenue in south philadelphia, Annie Mccormack for channel six action news. Thanks, annie. We will have meisha head on action news at 5 00.
