philadelphia, blank slates and for those who come through the airport, well, the airport will be the first point of contact. from areas of new led lighting to a virtual library, to improved wifi, papal visit visitors will enter an airport that has been spiffed up. color has been added from planters and club chairs to the tile in some restrooms. older signage like this has been largely replaced with international directionals punctuated with simple white on red arrows. unlike septa which is gearing up to move twice its normal numbers during the visit there is so far no evidence here that extra flights are being scheduled. >> airline schedules are pretty well defined so we kind of know how many airplanes are coming and we know how many seats are on those airplanes. we can plan for that but we do think it will be busy. maybe thanksgiving style busy and we can deal with that. >> unlike thanksgiving when many travelers are returning home it's expected many will be newcomers. with that in mind 900 staffers are getting a refresher course on how to help out stressed out travelers. they worked on listening skills, the goal to solve a problem, say, lost luggage but also to connect. >> even if they don't find that luggage at least the person knows the folks here care about them. james has worked a at an information mal counter for a decade. his style to quietly listen and look for a here holiday sized crowds that's for sure but not oversized crowds like down in center city. again, though, they want to make sure that when people come in here for the first time they're making a arrival of pope francis in september. >> in other news, a small earthquake rattled parts of central new jersey early this morning. the u.s. geological survey says the magnitude 2.7 quake hit around 3:41 a.m., happened about 2 miles north of bernardsville. there were no reports of damage or injuries. coming up at 6:00 new jersey correspondent nora muchanic has reaction from residents who say they felt that earthquake. philadelphia license and inspection center city looking into what caused a partial building collapse in the hunting park section of the city earlier today. this was the scene as chopper six flew overhead here in the 3600 block of north lawrence street around noontime. you can see rubble on the sidewalk from what looks like a row home here. the fire department says no one was for an extra week. jeff skversky has the latest from the training camp. >> hey, sharrie. eagles head coach chip kelly will pass on playing sam bradford in that preseason opener sunday against the colts at the linc. bradford will be held out until next saturday's preseason game against the ravens. there's nothing wrong its a precaution. bradford says he has no limitations, he's a hundred percent healthy. of course though when he got the news this morning, he was upset, a little disappointed. of course bradford wants to test out those knees, two back to back knee injuries. he wants to shake off the rust and the butterflies. bradford believes he has plenty of time to get ready for the monday night opener in atlanta next month. mark sanchez will start and tim tebow and matt barclay will get the majority of the reps. >> if i did play this saturday it would be six or eight plays. you know, it's not like i was going to go in there and play four quarters and i'm missing out on 75 reps in there. like i said you're disappointed not to be out there and playing but i think there's still plenty of time in the preseason for me to get the would, that i need to get done. >> there's that fine line in preseason games where you are, so his first 11 on 11 was two weeks ago and now going out against a team, it just -- my decision, we've been back and forth around it but i made the final call that we're going to sit him this game and he'll play against the ravens. >> bradford not the only one missing time. zach ertz will miss the entire preseason after having surgery today on going to like get this far. >> what they're learning about are careers in the entertainment industry, with the focus on steam, you know, science, technology, engineering, arts and math, really it all taken down. hundreds of cubans gathered outside the facility as it officially reopened today. john kerry, the first u.s. secretary of state to visit that country since 1945 was on hand for the ceremony. he called for a political opening in the communist run country saying that the u.s. beliefs citizens would be best served by a genuine democracy. however, he added that "cubes future is for cubans to shape. secretary kerry added this will be a long process moving forward. >> having normal relations makes it easier for us to talk. and talk can deepen understanding even when we know full well we will not see eye to eye on everything. >> secretary kerry addd that full normalization of ties will likely start in the middle of next month. >> turning to health check tonight and this sunday in philadelphia hundreds of people will lace up their sneakers to raise awareness and money for research to battle melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer and one local woman is also helping to spread the word. her cancer was caught thanks to a simple hair appointment. health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman has her story. >> hey, kathy. >> reporter: kathy is forever grateful to her hairstylist. at texture salon in oxford, pennsylvania. she was in for a haircut. deidre ehrlich man was drying her hair and noticed something worrisome. >> as i was lifting up the hair i noticed a really dark flat black area. >> reporter: she says it was also about the size of a quarter. she told kathy she needed to get it checked right away by a dermatologist. days later, tests came back showing it was melanoma. >> a lot of things run through my head. like has it spread? how big is it. >> reporter: fortunately the cancer had not spread to other parts of her body. but it was stage two and doctors had to surgically cut out a large area on her scalp. >> so, we have how many members now. >> reporter: now her family is helping raise awareness. their team the cat pack will be participating in this weekend's miles for melanoma event. >> i never thought we would get 73 members. our goal online still says 20. >> reporter: kathy's husband matt has known her since they were kids but says he never would have noticed the spot. >> its a miracle that deidre saw it and she spoke up. >> definitely saved my life i think. i'm happy that and relieved that we found it. >> reporter: deidre's spa has joined mark the spot. it's an education process for hairstylists. kathy preaches wear sunscreen check your skin and visit the dermatologist. the mails for melanoma 5k is students at the university of pennsylvania's pearlman school of medicine received their white coats during a very special ceremony here. this is a rite of passage of course enjoyed by every new medical student. not only did they receive their white coats they pledged the hippocratic oath treating to treat the ill to the best of their abilities. taking charge of their type 2 diabetes... volkswagen is recalling 420,000 vehicles in america because of a problem with front air bags that can prevent them from deploying in a crash. the recall affects eight models. that includes the jetta, passat and tiguan. all of the cars were model years 2010 to 2014. the national highway traffic safety administration says debris can rip a cable that powers the air bag meaning it won't go off. volkswagen is still developing a fix for the problem. >> new castle county is looking for people who want to start a career as a paramedic. the county's emergency medical services division is holding several information sessions in new castle over the next two months. the county paramedics chief says they're looking for 10 to 15 people to send through a rigorous one-year training program. >> it's services. men and women had access to health screenings as well as information on financial help and even housing. they were also given a good meal, clothing and other essential items. officials many there. wait until the week, it's going to be more packed. we're live on sky6 atlantic city, the beach umbrellas out, the beach is crowded, a lot of people in the water but fall is not too far away. have you noticed that the sun has been setting earlier and earlier the past several week and tonight the sun will be setting at 6:59. this is the first sunset before 8 o'clock since may fifth. so, a little depressing statistic that summer really don't have much more to go but etch temperature-wise it definitely feels like summer again. 87 degrees in philadelphia. the same in trenton. 85 allentown, 84 wilmington, 86 in millville and that sea breeze knocking temperatures down a bit. down the shore cape may currently 81 degrees. satellite6 along with action radar showing our big weather maker is very broad area of high pressure. what this high pressure will be doing over the neck several days is providing a heat pump out of the southwest. you'll notice there is a front that's trying to move through new york state. that really will not be able to sync very far to the south. so that means we will be increasing our heat and humidity as we head through the weekend. tonight musikfest, headliner darius rucker and warm up band starting at 7 o'clock. it's going to be beautiful, lots of sunshine and low humidity with a temperature of 80 degrees. tonight won't be quite as cool as the past several nights. but it will be seasonable. mostly clear, humidity levels relatively low. 68 degrees in philadelphia. allentown 60, reading 62, cape may 69 and trenton's low down to 65 degrees. so, your weekend kickoff for tomorrow, philadelphia, it will be sunny and it's together to be hot with a high of 90 degrees. dewpoints in the upper 50's to low 60's. so, the humidity levels will still be in check. down the shore put on the sunscreen, will you need it, loads of sunshine with that sea breeze. 83 degrees and the poconos 82, building clouds with a possibility of an isolated thunderstorm from that front up to the north. then tomorrow this is something i do want to draw attention to. if you have respiratory problems, if you have asthma or heart conditions you want to limit your time outdoors. it's an ozone action day. the air at the ground level ozone will be unhealthy so really this is good reason to stay inside if you have some respiratory problems. the five day at 5:00 showing tomorrow it will be hot, 91 degrees. sunday we bum it up to '93. monday the peek of the heat, 94 degrees. officially making this heat wave number four. but it continues tuesday and wednesday, temperatures in the 90's with a chance of some afternoon thunderstorms. i'll let you know if there's any relief late next week coming up in the full accuweather 7-day forecast. some like it happening on "action news" this evening. mail stolen then trashed in montgomery county. the identity theft investigation now under way after thieves target several mailboxes. also, preparing for the pope. the message of faith local church leaders are trying to promote amidst concerns over security and road restrictions. also, a new jersey mother has been arrested for drunk driving. who police say she had inside her car with her that has her facing more charges tonight. >> details. police in montgomery county are trying to track down identity thieves who they say stole mail from mailboxes across a neighborhood. it happened in towamencin township. officials say the thieves targeted nearly a dozen mailboxes on six different blocks in search of checks, bank statements or any other personal information. "action news" reporter vernon odom is live in the neighborhood where the thieves hit with the full story. vernon. >> reporter: sharrie, law enforcement calls it the rawest form of identity theft, perpetrated right at your curbside by thieves who strike under the cover of darkness. towamencin resident bill sykes now approaches his mailbox with greater focus. nine mailboxes in his neighborhood have been the target of thieves this week. stealing mail left out overnight for pickup the next day by the mail bane man but other residents have found the discarded envelopes of their neighbors opened and tossed in curbside trash barrels. the reason, theft of checking account and credit card numbers. >> identity theft and that type of fraud is out of control, so, you know, hopefully we can get ahead of it in this area as quick as possible. so, yeah, we'll have to look into our personal accounts right away. >> i guess i'm concerned that now we've got to check things out, definitely check our credit card account and just creepy i guess that people would go so low. >> reporter: police are on the case but this kind of crime is hard to track down. >> they came through the neighborhood checked mailboxes that people put mail out for delivery and pickup by the postal service the next day. >> reporter: left it out overnight. >> left it out overnight. they're looking for credit card numbers, gift cards, cash, things like that. >> reporter: police are warning the folks to constantly check their accounts. >> we identified nine victims so far but there could be others out there and we ump people to check their bank statements very care fair fully, check your accounts. >> reporter: roll residents david about we ar bowers says h. >> there was a check in there. i didn't write a check for that amount of money. i looked in my checkbook and the check was still in the checkbook. >> reporter: those thieves have submitted a bogus check for some $2,200. the bank did not hold david counting right there pope francis will make his historic visit to philadelphia and church leaders are hoping the true meaning of this trip won't be lost in talks of security restrictions and road closures. catholics across the city have been making their own spiritual preparations for the papal visit. they're focusing on the values that drive their faith. local churches tell "action news" they've been holding festivals, study groups and special speaking events to help get parishioners ready on an intellectual and spiritual level. >> in order for transformation to happen we have to approach the thing with a heart that's ready. and so that's the reason for the preparation. >> leaders from the archdiocese are encouraging every one to treat the event as a pilgrimage even if they're caught on camera celebrating his crime. it happened late fast in month at the entree byob restaurant. surveillance video shows the suspect taking a wallet from inside the victim's purse while his friend was in the restroom. well, does he a second bratter to dance as he hides the wallet as you see right there in his pants. if you have any information you're asked to call philadelphia police. >> authorities are still searching for the second suspect in an early morning robbery along a busy center city street. happened just after 2:00 a.m. along 13th street near the convention center. the victim told police two men walked up behind him and one grabbed his cell phone and ran off. the second suspect allegedly sprayed the victim with mace, knocked him to the ground and tried to choke him. the victim managed to get free and flag down a police officer after his attacker ran off. >> from our new jersey news room now, a 37-year-old mother was arrested for driving drunk and causing a crash, all while her six-year-old child was with her. toms river police say jennifer hyman resisted arrest on tuesday night even trying to kick the officer who was handcuffing her according to them. no one was hurt seriously in the crash. hyman faces charges of driving while intoxicated, resisting arrest and also child neglect. >> from our delaware news room tonight the state's education secretary says he will stepdown later this year. mark murphy has been the target of heavy criticism from delaware's teachers union and lawmakers. many say his school reform efforts have proven to be counterproductive. today governor jack markell announced the resignation which will take effect later this year. markel as nominated steven godowski to take murphy's place. >> fundraisers in central pennsylvania say a former beauty queen's fake cancer scam could cost them big donations. 23-year-old brandy weaver gate is accused of faking cancer for years swindling people out of thousands of dollars. police say she even tricked her own family. now those who held benefits for gates say they're worried people will think twice about donating again. >> people will not be as generous when they to give or they will question before they reach into their pocket. >> gates was arrested after an anonymous tip sparked a police investigation she's facing felony charges of theft by deception. gates is due in court next week. >> the philadelphia police department 19th district is featured in an article in this week's time magazine. captain joseph bologna says he was more than open to the idea. officer sean devlin in the passenger seat and michelle matos in the driver. the captain says he's happy with the way it turned out especially because it lets the public see a different side of policing. >> we have some good hard working police officers, supervisors here doing a lot of good things. most of it behind the scenes and nobody gets to see and i thought this would be a great opportunity to highlight that. >> the captain also adds that he's proud of the way the west philadelphia community has supported his office and helped address crime in the area. >> an article worth checking out. philadelphia tourism officials say center city hotels are on track for record occupancy levels. from january to june of this year, 76.2 percent of center city hotels have been booked. well, that's up 1 percent from the same time frame last year. officials say the biggest growth has been in leisure bookings but group and business bookings are are up as well. of course with more bookings comes higher rates. according to officials the average center city hotel runs $172 a night and that's up 5 percent from last year. >> a weekend bike ride is helping wounded veterans to try to lead a normal life again. this was the first leg of the so-called wounded warriors soldier ride. it took off from south philadelphia this morning. various local vets who have either lost limbs in combat or are recovering from severe emotional injuries are taking part in the 40-mile ride. each participants is provided a bicycle to meet their specific needs. the three day retreat focuses on both directions and you'll probably see delays as well. new traffic pattern by cottman avenue. that's going the cause delays. crash on the roosevelot boulevard northbound at f street -- one nearby in hunting park along sixth street at hunting park avenue. crash on the blue route southbound side by the route one media bypass is off to the side. still heavy delays coming from villanova and the delaware memorial bridge jam continues in both directions because of that construction taking out a lane each way that's going to last pretty much all weekend long but have a good weekend, rick and philadelphia police officer has been taken to the hospital after this accident just several moments ago. this is sixth street and hunting park avenue. according to authorities three vehicles including the police vehicle that we're looking at was involved in this mishap. the officer was taken to temple university hospital for what we're told are nonlife-threatening injuries. the other drivers refused treatment apparently but police are investigating again this traffic accident in hunting park. we'll keep an eye on the situation. as you can tell it's been closed off to traffic. we'll keep an eye on the situation bring you more information as it becomes available to us. >> a different type of crash in oklahoma. police dash cams were rolling as a high speed chase ended with a crash. officers said they were trying to pull the chase suspect over because he wasn't wearing a seat belt. well, instead of stopping, they say the driver took off. he crashed minutes later, then tried to jail. boaters are back on a colorado river contaminated with toxic wastewater. county officials lifted the ban this afternoon allowing kayakers rafters and tubers back on the river. the animus river had been closed for a week while the epa cleaned up the water. the shocking color is on but officials don't know what pollutant might have settled on the river bed. >> all right, time now for sports currently 87 degrees in philadelphia and trenton, allentown 85 in wilmington 84. millville 86 and that sea breeze has knocked the temperature down on the boardwalk in atlantic city down to 78 degrees. satellite6 along with action radar showing that we have loads of sunshine rider now. high pressure really in control. if you look up to the north you can see this ribbon of clouds and some moisture trying to move through new york state. that will really have a tough time dropping to the south thanks to that high pressure. so, tonight mostly clear and still humidity levels will be comfortable, temperatures seasonable, 60 in the cooler suburbs, 68 degrees for center city. then for tomorrow, the heat is on. our afternoon high bumping up to 91 degrees. again, the dewpoints generally in the upper 50's and low 60's, so humidity won't abhuge factor. that cold front again could touch off a thunderstorm in the poconos and then it really just washes out. this high pressure intensifies on sunday so that heat pump will knock temperatures up to 93 degrees and also dewpoints will be in the mid 60's so it gets more muggy and i think the peek of the heat will be on monday. if you're down the shore the ocean temperature 76 degrees, very comfortable. it's going to be a great weekend on the beaches. loads of sunshine on saturday, 83 degrees and sunday will be warmer and a little bit more humid with a high of 85. if you're heading up to the mountains tomorrow afternoon an isolated thunderstorm possible. otherwise partly sunny and warm, 82 degrees. and on sunday it gets a little bit toasty for the poconos with a high of 85 degrees. so, the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, lots of sunshine tomorrow. it will be hot but again, the humidity not a huge factor. 91 degrees on sunday, up to 93 degrees and more humid as well, so if you're head to the eagles game at the linc, stay hydrated, drink lots of. what at the kickoff 90 degrees, by the fourth quarter up to that afternoon high of 93. heading into monday, the peek of the heat 94 degrees. perhaps a few afternoon thunderstorms. this officially makes it heat wave number four with three days in the 90's but that heat wave likely will be extended tuesday steamy with some afternoon thunderstorms as a weak cold front tries to approach, 92 degrees. on wednesday and thursday also a chance of a few thunderstorms with afternoon highs in the low 90's and friday up to 92 degrees. the last heat wave eight days look like this one could be about the same. the hottest day at this point appears to be monday, 94 degrees. so, at least we're looking at temperatures generally in the low 90's, not upper nineties. >> okay we'll take that. >> we have no choice. >> cecily thanks. we'll be right back. >> folks
