President Cyril Ramaphosa says women cannot make meaningful progress as long as they continue to be relegated to “traditional” roles, while men sit on decision-making structures.

Ramaphosa used his weekly newsletter on International Women’s Day to reflect on the Women’s Charter, which was drawn up in 1994.
He says the women of South Africa have played a pivotal role in the country’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We salute the resilience and bravery of women frontline workers, who worked to fight the pandemic as nurses, doctors, emergency personnel, police and soldiers,” he wrote.
