I was on 24 hour a day dialysis, a feeding tube, trach. It took me a long time to accept the fact i didnt know what was going on with me until i woke up. I thought it was the next day. And when i looked at my body, i realized i had lost a third of my weight. Reporter he was in a coma for a month. At that point, he weighed only 79 pounds. It was then that doctors diagnosed him with legionnaires disease. Hes one of eight people who contracted the illness in coop city in january. He was doing flooring work across the street from the cooling towers. Today sitting here, seven months after his ordeal, despite the daily struggles he faces, he says he still considers himself one of the lucky ones, especially when he thinks of the south bronx where the death toll from legionnaires disease continues to rise. This is not a joke. You know, it shut my organs down completely, you know. My prayers go out to every one of them. They dont know what theyre in for. In april, he and his attorney filed suit against coops owners claiming they knew about the legionella bacteria, but didnt do what was needed to protect untold numbers of people who could have been exposed. That includes the duty to test, the duty to inspect, to disinfect when needed. This is a travesty for him, whats happened to him, something that could have been avoided. The more recent outbreak brings it to the forefront that there has to be accountability. I believe this, you know. Nothing is impossible. Nothing. And the fact that im sitting here here is a miracle. In the meantime, anticipation in cleveland has been building for weeks and across the country, dozens of media crews are lined up outside this arena, the home of the cavaliers and lebron james. Security is tight. Weve seen bomb sniffing dogs checking trash cans outside. Inside, its a huge venue. The stage is set for tonights prime time debate only on the Fox News Channel. 4,500 people will take part in the audience for that debate, along with the 10 candidates who qualified. We did see one of those candidates. Theyve been going through their walkthroughs throughout the day today. Ben carson came into the facebook lounge. Police say he also brought along a propane lighter as well as propane lighter fluid. They feared he may have been wanting to set off an explosive device, but a gash on the canister meant it wouldnt work. He attacked three people. Police believe the 29yearold was homeless and suffered from significant psychological issues. Dari theres been an arrest in the shooting of two people after a hiphop concert in new jersey that happened earlier on this week. The 27yearold was booked on two counts of attempted homicide as well as weapons charges. Police say that he opened fire outside the pnc Bank Art Center monday night after a big sean and jay cole show. Two men suffered multiple gunshot wounds and are in critical but stable condition. He is being held on 750,000 bail. Mayor de blasio is rolling out a 6 billion plan to tackle the citys growing homeless problem. Antwan a key part is to get help for those mentally ill. Lisa evers is live at city hall with details on this new hi. Reporter hi. Here at city hall this afternoon, the mayor detailed the plan to deal with the mentally ill who are prone to violence. Now instead of a revolving door of hospitals and jails, theyre aiming for a longterm solution. A new quinnipiac poll found that 53 percent of those questioned are seeing more homeless on city streets than in recent years. Reports of random attacks by mentally ill people are more common. The de blasio administrations response is a new program called nyc safe, to protect the public. Nyc safe specifically focuses on people with a Mental Health challenge and a history of violence, a proven mental challenge and a proven history of violence. When those two elements come together, this plan is activated. Reporter the city will target mentally ill people with violent tendencies whether theyre on the street or in private homes. The idea will be to identify them before its too late and an innocent person is hurt. In many of the cases weve all read about, there was always somebody who worried about that person. But didnt have a way to act on it. Reporter the first lady is helping to lead the 22 million effort. This initiative has been constructed to increase Public Safety and provide longterm solutions to folks who struggle reporter the plan calls for police to communicate with the department of health and Mental Hygiene in realtime and train police to recognize the signs. Whats new is were training officers, over 5,000 officers and the in the future well be going with city agencies as a team. Team. Reporter the mayor says if they commit a crime, they will be arrested like anybody else. But the difference here is they will receive Mental Health treatment while in custody. Antwan new york city and the Uniformed Firefighters Association have reached a tentative agreement on a new seven year contract. The financial terms were not announced, but as part of the deal, the city has agreed to restore disability benefits for firefighters who are seriously hurt on the job. Currently only firefighters hired before 2009 qualify for those benefits. Theres part of the agreement that needs to be ratified in albany. Dari preparations for the popes visit to the u. S.
