The number of legionnaires has grown. A list of locations has samples that tested positive for the bacteria. Reporter some guest at the op oprey house hotel had no idea legionnaires disease was found in a cooling tower here. So far, no one at the hotel has gotten sick. The Hotel Manager says the cooling tower is being disinfected. We are taking steps to be sure we are safe. Making sure that no one gets sick by this bacteria. The outbreak is growing. 57 people have gotten sick and three have died. Health experts are trying to track down the source. So far, theyve checked 22 buildings and 17 of them have cooling towers. Three of the buildings tested positive for the bacteria. The hotel, concourse plaza shopping krernt center and lincoln hospital. Now you have me a little bit worried. The three people that died were all middle aged and had preexisting health problems. Legionnaires doesnt spread person to person. You can only get it by breathing in bacteria. Whatevers in the atmosphere gets pulled into the cooling tower so theres a lot more dirt and debris in areas that organisms can grow in. Its treatable with antibiotics if caught early. You have to remember that cantaloupes are five times more popular than honey dews and water melons are two times more popular than cantaloupes so you know where honey dew goes on the list. Thats basically because even though this is a good fruit for you and Good Nutrition wise, really good for you, to find a good honey dew before august or after october is as rare as a blue moon. Its very, very hard. Weve all gone to weddings, restaurants and seen the fruit platter there and just look at the honey dew thats on there because of the color and say i dont really want to taste it. Most of the time if you find a ripe honey dew, its one of the Sweetest Things here. Im going to let you, not just because were on television i brought in the best or something, when you find a good honey dew this time of year, theyre absolutely terrific. Theyre the sweetest of all the fruit. Besides water melon, theyre about 90 water. The idea is when you find a good one, this is what we have to look for. The people are going to look at me and people are going to say to me youre chasing people with honey dews any other time of the year. Youll find fair ones and good ones but youll find great ones starting in august right through to october. Thats because they have to have maturity in them. When buying, you want to look for nothing shiny. It has to be the dull color. If the melon is in an outside market, you see it not in a refrigerated super market or something or if you bring the melon home and let it sit on the counter action its going to develop a little stickiness on the outside. If you look at a honey dew, its all melon. That sugar there, theres no place for it to go. It will make the skin on the outside, make it nice and tacky so it will be tacky. Sometimes you wont find it but maturity is the key. When i saw august, september, october, that means that theyve been on the vine longer. Once theyve been on the fine longer they have the sugar in them. Thats the most important thing. Melons get soft and ripe and melons wont be any sweeter unless they were picked when they have maturity. Maturity is the key to everything. They cannot ripen when you have them at your home. If theyre not ready to go, they will get done. They will get softer, develop color on the outside. They will never ever, ever be any sweeter than when theyre picked. This time of year youre going to find them with maturity. Melons are going to eat really well now. Thats the most important thing. The most asked question is that people ask i buy a honey dew and let it sit for a week and it didnt taste right. When you go to the stores, you can smell it, smell a little bit of that. This melon i cut this morning was hard. Theyre out there and available and youre going to see honey dews at a reasonable price. Like i said, if you find a good honey dew, its one of the Sweetest Things youve ever eaten. I feel like i see people in the store pick up the end and smell it and push it and does the stem do anything . Not really. You see these melons are hard. If you want to look at the stem end here. A lot of times you see this scarring you see here at the stem end . That scarring is sugar coming through. When you see that little scarring, dont be afraid. Honey dews have a tendency to have a little scarring on the outside. As long as the scarring could be brown even, as long as the scarring is not soft, when you push in and its ripe, you want to look at the stem end. Thats the most important thing.
