we'll show you on this monday, december 11th. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> they made snow angels. >> yay, they look like they had a good time. >> hopefully they won the game after all that. we'll break that all down in sports, but we're going to start with the battle in southern california against the wildfires there. >> breaking overnight, new evacuation orders have been issued. the biggest and most out of control is the thomas fire moving into santa barbara county and has burned 230,000 acres. >> nearly 800 buildings have been destroyed and thousands more are threatened this morning. >> reporter: this fire racing up the southern california c >> look how dangerous it is. >> reporter: those powerful santa ana winds intensifying, whipping the flames over hillsides and towards homes. >> this area was under evacuation two days ago and we lifted those orders because we thought we were in good shape. >> my neighbor across the street pounding on my door at 3:00 in the morning. debbie, get out! pack your stuff, get out! >> reporter: those terrified neighbors scrambling, the flames closing in fast. >> in ten seconds we had the fire close to us from 30 to 60 feet high. >> reporter: but luis decided to stay, grabbing a hodse, doing what he could to keep the fire from spreading. he was able to help save some of his neighbors' homes. now the fight to make sure others in santa barbara county fare but a glimmer of hope for the rest of southern california. crews getting the upper hand on four other fires and one is now completely out. but the devastation left behind is hard to swallow. >> just absolutely traumatic. >> reporter: sharon flores and her daughter ariana in disbelief. only their mailbox left standing. >> i was hopeful, a 50/50 chance. it doesn't seem like it's real. we just spent thanksgiving here. >> reporter: and you can see the flames and smoke where firefighters are still hard at work. there is potential relief in sight because the winds are dying down, but it is dry out here, and there is no rain in the forecast for more than a week. kendis, diane?
