Jay moments ago a metro spokesperson did confirm that there is an extremely small amount of asbestos in the mechanism area that is outside of the cabin of the 1000 series rail cars. There is 280 of those rail cars. Yes, they are still in service. The metro spokesperson insists that this asbestos is in a mechanism that is not accessible for riders.
